  • ISANA NZ workshops to support International Student Wellbeing

    ISANA NZ is offering a range of professional development and community engagement workshops that are aligned to deliver on the goals of the International Student Wellbeing Strategy.

    The workshops are being offered in Auckland, Palmerston North, Tauranga, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch and Dunedin.

    The workshop topics are focused on helping education providers and local community groups to engage better with international students in order to enhance international student wellbeing.

    Topics for this year’s workshops include:

    • Enhancing international student engagement with local communities
    • Resources for pastoral care
    • Building cultural intelligence and skills 
    • Mental health
    • Ensuring everyday wellbeing
    • Tools to support students through cultural and academic transitions

    Each set of workshops will also include updates from government agencies, including MBIE (Immigration NZ) and NZQA.

  • Explore women’s leadership journeys at NZIEC

    In a Q&A format, the lunchtime session will see panellists sharing lessons on what they have learned during their career pathways to senior leadership positions, including the challenges they have faced and the opportunities they have created and seized. They will also aim to impart strategies for other women to follow in their steps.

    The panel is supported by the Global Leadership League (GLL), an organisation focussed on advancing women’s leadership skills, knowledge and connection in international education.

    Dawn Hewitt, Director, Global Groups (Australasia) for the GLL, says that regardless of their professional positions and experience, women in the industry have lots to offer.

    “The GLL is underpinned by the notion that when women support each other, incredible things happen. Whatever your goal, the GLL is focused on helping everyone rise to their potential.”

    One of the panellists, Ainslie Moore, Deputy Director Operations at the University of Auckland, says one the topics they’ll discuss is the importance of supportive networks.

    “Every major decision on ‘where to next’ in my career was informed by the support of a network of strong women in international education.

    “One of the ambitions of the GLL is to give the next generation of women in international education access to a network of peers and senior women; not just for career progression, but also for sharing knowledge to bring more balance to work and life.”

    Panel chair and ENZ’s Regional Director for Europe and the Americas, Lisa Futschek, says that in addition to engaging with the panellists, attendees will have the opportunity to connect with fellow delegates before and after the lunch.  

    “We hope attendees will leave inspired and equipped with a range of strategies and approaches to support women leaders in our industry – now and in the future,” says Lisa.

    Attendance at this panel is not restricted to women. Indeed, men are encouraged to attend to hear more about the experiences of women within our industry and learn approaches and strategies that can support women leaders.

  • Join us for the Latin America Study with New Zealand Virtual Fair 

    “The fair will be a great opportunity for providers to connect with prospective students in the Latin American market, using an interactive digital platform,” says Javiera Visedo, Director of Engagement Latin America for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ).   

    “ENZ is seeking expressions of interest in the fair, which we are hosting in collaboration with FPP. If you are interested in participating, please fill out the Expression of Interest form by 9 December 2022.”   

    Invitations to register will follow in the new year.

    Key areas of focus for ENZ in Latin America include Brazil, Colombia and Chile, and we have staff based in São Paulo and Santiago.  

    Close to 6,000 international students came to New Zealand from Latin America in 2019, and Brazil is our eighth largest market. Since the pandemic there has been intense activity from our competitors with many of them establishing in-country representatives, which demonstrates the importance of this region in international student recruitment.  

    Beyond student recruitment, ENZ also values the government and education connections with the region. 

    ENZ recently hosted a series of Latin America Masterclasses, which saw participants from around Latin America tuning in to watch live lectures delivered by New Zealand academics.  

    In June this year, Education Minister Chris Hipkins created great buzz with his visit to Brazil and Chile, part of his first international trip since the beginning of the pandemic.   

    Group recipients of the Prime Ministers’ Scholarships for Latin America have recently started making their way to Brazil, Colombia and Chile to participate in short study exchanges. These include several Māori led groups, supporting connections with indigenous nations in the region.    

    In September, ENZ attended the FPP Virtual Fair in Colombia. The fair had more than 800 visitors, with over 100 visiting the ENZ booth. There was strong interest in tertiary programmes and language studies. The virtual fair was a great opportunity to promote New Zealand as a study destination within the Latin American market.  

    A group of 100 high school students from Paraná State in southern Brazil had a three-month study experience this year with schools in Auckland, Rotorua, Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North, Wellington, Canterbury and Invercargill.

    Brazil 

    In 2019, there were 3,324 Brazilian students studying in New Zealand. Being from non-English speaking countries, the majority of Latin American students will start their education experience in New Zealand studying English. Scholarships offered by the local state governments have also contributed to the presence of Brazilian students in New Zealand and in 2022, 100 students from the state of Parana in Brazil travelled to New Zealand on a 3-month exchange. The students were placed at high schools across the country and gave positive feedback about their time here.  

    Colombia 

    Colombia is New Zealand’s second largest market in Latin America, second only to Brazil. In 2019, there were 1,360 Colombian students studying in New Zealand. 

    In 2023, 22 students from Bogotá, Colombia, will travel to New Zealand to study during terms one and two. Most of the students will be based at schools across the North Island, with one group heading down to Nelson.  

    On 23 November 2022, ENZ launched the I AM NEW campaign in Spanish at an event in Bogotá, to promote a New Zealand education.  

    Chile 

    The recent CAPE LatAm ‘Celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations with Chile’ event, hosted at Parliament, was a great example of the rich history of connections between New Zealand and Chile.  

    Chile is New Zealand’s third largest market in Latin America. In 2019, there were 1,193 Chilean students studying in New Zealand. The majority of Chilean students come to New Zealand to study English Language, but enrolment in schools has also been consistent, with 17% of students studying at New Zealand schools in 2019. 

    Flights 

    Latam will be resuming their daily flights to Sydney via Auckland from mid-December and Qantas is flying three times per week from Santiago direct to Sydney. Although the cost of flights is high, in line with worldwide trends, the resumption of regular flights demonstrates the high demand for the Latin America to Oceania route.

  • Bringing Us Together – TVET in the Asia-Pacific

    The Global COVID pandemic has put skills issues and innovation on the center stage, as governments, industries, and educators alike work to upskill and reskill workforces disrupted by the pandemic and ensure strong working futures. 

    The APAC TVET Forum will bring together the necessary key groups for effective TVET: Governments, Industries, and Educators.  The Forum will offer Government to Government (G2G), Business to Business (B2B), and System-to-System content streams, then  “bring us together” for a cross-system conversation across the APAC region.   
     
    The Forum will be free to register, and held over two Fridays (5 November and Friday 12 November, 2021) across the following local times:

    • Bangkok, Thailand 09.30-14.00
    • Beijing, China 10.30-15.00
    • AEDT 13.30-18.00
    • Samoa 14.30-19.00
    • New Zealand 15.30-19.30

    We will hear from senior government officials, major companies, international agencies and organisations, and TVET sector leaders from around the APAC region. 

    The New Zealand partners include New Zealand government’s international education agency, its largest private sector vocational education consultancy, and New Zealand’s new national institution for Vocational Education and Training.

  • Join ENZ’s virtual Latin America regional update

    The session – set to take place on Wednesday 5 April at 9 am NZT – is an opportunity for those who are both new to the sector, or wanting to re-establish links in the region, to hear updates from our LatAm team.  

    As the New Zealand international education sector rebuilds, Latin America provides New Zealand institutions with an opportunity for diversification. New Zealand has well-established links in the region, with many strong connections in the fields of education, academic research, government, business, and agriculture.  

    Following the re-opening of borders in 2022, New Zealand has recently welcomed high school student groups on exchange from Brazil and Colombia. In turn, New Zealand students have travelled to Latin America as part of the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Latin America, participating in study tours and exchanges in Chile, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico.

  • NAFSA CEO to deliver opening plenary at NZIEC KI TUA 2024

    NZIEC KI TUA 2024 is set to welcome rich, global, and indigenous perspectives on international education with the announcement of its opening plenary and keynote speakers over two days of the conference. 

    NAFSA CEO and Executive Director of NAFSA Association of International Educations, Dr Fanta Aw, will deliver the opening plenary at NZIEC KI TUA 2024 inTe Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington from 6 – 8 August.

    NAFSA Association of International Educators (NAFSA) CEO and Executive Director, Dr Fanta Aw will deliver the opening plenary. Experienced leader in business, community development, governance and technology, Elle Archer (Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāti Maru – Hauraki Whānui katoa, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Porou, Ngāpuhi, Ngāi Tūhoe) will deliver a keynote address on day two of the conference.  

    Dr Aw will speak about the role international education can play in a time of global challenge and the global dimensions of our international education sector. Since 1996, Dr Aw has been a dedicated member and leader at NAFSA, which is the largest association serving international educators worldwide.  

    From 2013 to 2016, she served as NAFSA’s President and Board Chair. Dr. Aw is a recognised and highly respected figure in the fields of international education and higher education administration. Originally from Mali, West Africa, Dr. Aw has resided in both East and West Africa, as well as the United States, fostering a broad and diverse cultural perspective. Her passion for global experiences has led her to explore nearly 60 countries. Dr. Aw is a frequent keynote speaker, sharing her expertise on various topics including international educational exchanges, diversity and inclusion in higher education, and U.S. immigration.  

    Keynote speaker Elle Archer’s address will draw on her experiences from a number of global initiatives across engagement, cultivating curiosity, intergenerational fairness, and learning futures. Her address will take the audience on a journey from our own backyard to global kaupapa and focus on activating our connection to the world. This also fits into a portfolio of mahi that she has been involved in: Futures Now - Activating Societal Shift, Embracing Kotahitanga.

    Archer is an experienced speaker, facilitator, innovator and strategist, empowering people to achieve outcomes for the betterment of purpose. She holds roles as Heamana Whakahaere Executive Chair, Chair, Managing Director, Board Trustee and Kaiarahi for a wide range of organisations nationally and globally. She has been involved in iwi, business, industry, government, and community development for 27 years, with a background in science, geospatial technology, education, infrastructure, economic development, and emergency management. She won the ‘High-Tech Inspiring individual for 2024’ award at the NZ Hi-Tech awards.

    Tracy Evans Scholarship

    Awarded annually to an individual working in New Zealand's School sector (secondary or intermediate) in the field of international education.

  • Register now for the Climate Action Network for International Educators (CANIE) Summit 2020

    It will take place entirely online on 21 May, with two separate sessions to suit attendees in different time zones. There will also be a discussion forum open for people to share their ideas.

    The programme’s sessions will feature presentations by international education practitioners from across the globe on topics like digital recruitment, flight guilt, and building sustainability into your institution’s business strategy.

    Co-founders of CANIE and summit organisers, Pii-Tuulia Nikula and Ailsa Lamont, say they were pleased to receive many high-quality presentation proposals on many of the sector’s hot sustainability issues.

    “A topic like digital recruitment is really big,” Nikula says. “It’s something a lot of people have been exploring, but now with all the restrictions due to COVID-19, it’s become a lot more important.”

    Nikula and Lamont say the CANIE organisation came together organically. Their membership is made up of practitioners who work in different areas of international education, but who all see the need for the sector to reduce its impact on the planet.

    “We hope this event sparks a larger conversation around sustainability,” Lamont says.

    CANIE was first launched at the 2019 New Zealand International Education Conference. Membership of CANIE is free of charge, as is registration for this year’s summit.
