  • 2026 New Zealand School Scholarships launched in Viet Nam

Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) launched the New Zealand Schools Scholarships (NZSS) 2026 programme, recording the highest level of participation since the programme’s inception in 2019.

A total of 56 New Zealand secondary schools and 55 Vietnamese education agents have participated in NZSS 2026, reflecting strong education provider and market confidence in the programme.

Launched on 5 January, the programme will have applications close on 22 March 2026, with 56 scholarships available across a diverse range of state, private, single-sex and co-educational schools, offering NCEA, Cambridge or IB curricula.

To grow awareness and interest in the scholarships and New Zealand’s school study options, ENZ delivered a series of New Zealand School Scholarships information sessions in collaboration with six education agencies and one partner school in Viet Nam. This was in addition to two public webinars livestreamed on a partner media fanpage.

ENZ also strengthened agent capability through a dedicated six-part webinar series for Vietnamese agents, delivered from 3-18 December 2025. The series featured 36 speakers from New Zealand secondary schools, NZQA and SIEBA, and focused on building agent knowledge of the New Zealand school system, regional school offerings, and NZSS promotion guidelines.

The agent webinar series attracted over 160 registrations, with 60-98 agents attending each session, indicating strong engagement across the market. The sessions were designed to equip agents with practical tools to confidently advise parents and students and to support consistent, accurate promotion of NZSS.

ENZ’s Market Manager – Viet Nam, Van Banh said these activities aim to provide prospective school students and their parents clear, consistent information about the NZSS programme and application process.

“With the programme’s record school participation this year, expanded market outreach, and a strong focus on education agent capability-building, NZSS 2026 is a significant step forward to strengthen awareness of New Zealand’s secondary education offering in Viet Nam and support its long-term, sustainable growth.

“It’s fantastic to see a sustained level of commitment and contribution from education providers for this programme, it really highlights the strategic value of the NZSS as a pathway programme to study in New Zealand and underlines the sector’s continued confidence in Viet Nam’s secondary school market,” Van said.

Collectively, participating New Zealand schools have committed an estimated $441,702 NZD in scholarship investment, with each school offering a scholarship valued at 50 percent of the first-year tuition fee.

Since its first launch in 2019, NZSS has awarded nearly 80 scholarships, enabling Vietnamese students to access high-quality secondary education in New Zealand and progress to positive academic and career outcomes. Alumni achievements continue to reinforce NZSS’ reputation as one of the most established and impactful government-backed secondary school scholarship programmes in Viet Nam.

  • New Zealand showcases skills‑focused education pathways to students in the Philippines

Delivered from 18-25 February across Manila, Pampanga and Davao, the roadshow aligned with ENZ’s Philippines Go-to-Market Plan and responded to strong demand for practical education options linked to employment outcomes.

Activities highlighted the strengths of New Zealand’s private training establishment (PTE) and institute of technology and polytechnic (ITP) subsectors, positioning them as high-quality, workforce aligned pathways for Filipino students.

A total of 12 New Zealand education providers, including six PTEs and six ITPs participated, engaging directly with prospective students, education agents and local stakeholders across three key regional centres. The roadshow featured targeted education agent briefings, networking sessions and student events, enabling providers to showcase programmes designed to meet skills shortages and support career focused study choices.

Engagement was strong throughout the week. Education agent seminars and workshops attracted more than 40 agencies across Manila and Davao, while student facing events drew a combined total of 440 attendees. Interest was particularly high in programmes offering clear links to employment, industry relevance and practical learning.

Alongside student and agent engagement, ENZ advanced broader government-to-government objectives through strategic meetings with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in both Manila and Davao.

These discussions increased awareness of New Zealand’s vocational education system and explored areas for future collaboration between New Zealand and Philippine institutions. Participating providers are now assessing potential partnership opportunities as part of this exploratory phase.

ENZ Market Manager – Philippines and Thailand, Chortip Pramoolpol said the engagement played a key role in positioning New Zealand as a destination of choice for a skills driven education.

“The Philippines is a growing and increasingly sophisticated market,” Chortip said.

“This roadshow raised the visibility of New Zealand’s PTE and ITP offerings and reinforced New Zealand’s reputation as a trusted provider of skills focused education that delivers real outcomes for students.”

The Philippines engagement reflects ENZ’s focus on sustainable growth, diversification and quality outcomes. By highlighting applied education pathways and aligning with workforce priorities, ENZ continues to build momentum in the market while supporting long-term student mobility and institutional connections.

  • Global demand for English language learning: A market still shifting

Globally, more than one million students undertook English language study across the major destinations in 2024, generating around 7.6 million student weeks.

That’s a significant rebound from the pandemic years, but still well below 2019 levels, when the sector reached over 1.3 million students generating more than 10 million student weeks. The expectation was that 2024 would continue the strong momentum seen in 2022 and 2023. Instead, growth slowed.

As Ivana outlined, this wasn’t due to a drop in interest in learning English. Demand remains strong. What’s changed is the environment around it.
Across many of the major destinations, governments introduced tighter visa settings, enrolment caps and more restrictive policies. At the same time, students and families have been dealing with rising costs, weaker currencies and increased uncertainty. The result is a more constrained and more selective market. In 2024, global student numbers declined by around 6 percent and student weeks by 11 percent compared with the previous year.

The presentation also highlighted that the shape of demand is changing.

Adult learners, once a core part of the sector, are declining across many destinations. In their place, younger learners are entering earlier, often for shorter stays. The average age of students’ first study abroad experience has dropped from around 15–16 years pre pandemic to closer to 12–13 today.

At the same time, traditional patterns of mobility are changing. More students are choosing shorter, more flexible experiences. Some are staying closer to home, supported by the growth of in country options and transnational education offers.

There’s also growing competition from newer destinations. Markets such as the Philippines and Dubai are expanding quickly, offering alternatives that can be closer to home or more affordable for students.

Taken together, these shifts point to a sector that is no longer simply rebounding, but actively reshaping. As Ivana noted during the session, the key driver is no longer just student demand, it is the interaction between demand, policy settings and economic conditions.
