  • Introducing Joyce Hu in Taiwan

    What is your role at ENZ in Taiwan?

    I joined ENZ in October 2015 as Education Marketing Manager in Taipei, replacing Jamie Chien. I divide my time between ENZ (30 percent) and MFAT at the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office (70 percent), where I provide executive and administrative support to the Director.  At ENZ, I report to Regional Director – Greater China Alexandra Grace.

    What are your priorities in this role?

    My priorities are to:

    • Raise the profile of New Zealand education to agents

    • Support New Zealand education providers doing business in Taiwan, by introducing them to local stakeholders

    • Organise and run ENZ’s marketing and promotional activities on behalf of ENZ

    What’s your connection to New Zealand?

    I have participated in an MFAT management course in Wellington, and also escorted a Taiwan television crew to New Zealand to shoot a feature programme on New Zealand business and society.

    I have a lot of experience in running events, managing official visits and dealing with requests for consular assistance from New Zealanders in Taiwan.

    I am passionate about New Zealand as a lovely place to live, to work, and to study, and I enjoy telling the New Zealand education story in Taiwan.

  • Chinese and Kiwi students come together for Youth Summit

    This was the third summit of its kind and included student delegates from around New Zealand and the cities of Qingdao, Wuhan, Baoding, Chengdu and Zhuhai in China.

    The summit had student delegates taking part in workshops and working on projects about global citizenship, social responsibility and leadership while in residence at St Andrew’s College in Christchurch. The Chinese delegation then visited Queenstown and Dunedin while hosted by Taieri College, showcasing our southern cities over four days.

    Student delegates experienced a formal official opening ceremony, and the signing of the first education memorandum of understanding between Christchurch Educated and the Qingdao Municipal Education Bureau. Two VIP delegations from Qingdao also attended the opening ceremony and visited education providers in Christchurch.

    Summit founder and president of the Institute of Global Engagement New Zealand, Jan Fitz-Gerald, said she was delighted to bring the summit to Christchurch for its second time in New Zealand.

    “The summit’s goal is to empower the next generation of global citizens and leaders to work and live within a culturally diverse environment. This year, we featured some insightful sessions on cultural diversity, preparing to face the issues of the future as global citizens and leaders, and understanding China,” Jan said.

    For Hayley O’Connell of Taieri College, the youth summit was a life-changing experience. 

    “The bond and connections that I have formed with people from around [China] have been amazing, and there were so many life-long messages that I was able to take away from this summit. Anyone who is interested in helping to lead the global changes of the future – this summit is for you,” Hayley said.

    The summit was sponsored by ENZ, the Institute of Global Engagement New Zealand, Christchurch Educated and the New Zealand China Council, with support from St Andrew’s College and Taieri College.

    The 2020 summit to be held in China is expected to attract a large delegation with 2019 delegates already signing up.

  • The new Study with New Zealand study matching tool is now live

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) has launched this revamped study matching tool on the SwNZ website to replace the previous MyStudyNZ tool. It is a useful tool for Aotearoa New Zealand's education providers to be able to promote their courses to students online.

    Geoff Bilbrough, ENZ’s General Manager of Marketing said that with the launch of the new StudywithNewZealand website, it was important to continue with the study matching tool as feedback from the sector had indicated it was a valuable tool for providers to connect with potential students and make them aware of the courses they offered.

    "The sector told us that the previous matching tool, MyStudyNZ, had been positively received and tended to generate leads that were more engaged.

    “We believe this new tool will continue to provide significant benefits to education providers and prospective students as it guides international students to study options that match their personal interests and past qualifications.

    “To get the most out of the new tool, it is important that education providers’ profiles and course listings on the SwNZ site are up to date and accurate. This will help present your institution and your courses to the right students”, he added.

    While ENZ does carry out a major data upgrade for all institutions twice a year (via our partner IDP), now is a good time to check your information is displaying accurately on our Study with New Zealand website.  Education providers will have recently received an email with information on how to do this. It is a very straightforward process, and ENZ encourages providers to check their profiles and ensure that the name of your institution or school is correct and that your profile makes the most of all the features the system offers. Make sure your keywords are relevant and your profile includes full descriptions and photos to help you stand out to potential students.

    Tertiary providers are being asked to check course study mode, start dates, costs, venue, and the duration as this information is used in the new study matching tool and the SwNZ search tool.   • Immigration physician panel update

    The agreement will improve the quality of health examinations visa applicants receive from doctors and radiologists undertaking immigration health examinations. Implementation of the aligned network will take place in three phases and is expected to be fully completed by mid 2014. 

    Removals and additions to INZ’s panel physician list in this phase of alignment will become effective on 30 June 2013. Panel physicians being removed from INZ’s list have been informed not to accept appointments after 29 June 2013.

    Applicants who have had a medical and/or chest X-ray certificate completed by a panel physician being removed from INZ’s panel will still be able to submit these certificates with their visa application if they have been completed prior to 30 June 2013.

    The aligned network will be jointly managed and co-ordinated by INZ and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

    The benefits of alignment include:

    • improved customer service;

    • targeted communication, administration, performance management and training for a single panel physician network, and related cost savings;  

    • enhanced integrity through robust auditing and analysis;

    • expansion of tuberculosis screening and treatment networks; and

    • progression of the immigration Five Country Conference objectives including: the promotion of health protection and efficiency through effective shared management and quality assurance, and promoting best practice, partnership and shared investment.

    A key consideration in developing this agreement is that the panel physician network remains responsive to the needs of INZ and DIAC visa applicants.  INZ and DIAC are working closely together to develop and implement a joint management framework.

    The INZ panel physician list is on the INZ website.  If applicants are unsure whether their medical certificates have been completed by a panel physician they should refer to the INZ website, or contact their nearest INZ office for further advice.

  • Advertising opportunity for Japan’s New Zealand Study Guidebook

    The publication is the only one of its kind supported by the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ). KBUNSHA distributes 20,000 copies to Japanese schools, universities and education organisations as well as education fairs and seminars.    

    ENZ’s Business Development Manager – Japan, Tomomi Kontani said that there is increased demand for information on New Zealand’s education offering.  

    “We are continuing to see significant interest in New Zealand as an education destination from students and their parents, schools, and education agents here in Japan.  

    The KBUNSHA New Zealand Study Guidebook is a trusted publication in Japan and advertising here is a great opportunity for education providers and regions to promote New Zealand education to the Japanese public. Destination marketing plays a key role in student attraction for a market like Japan with a tourism focus and we hope regions can also participate in this special opportunity to introduce their regions and activities”, said Tomomi. 

    This guidebook was distributed at the annual student fair and education stakeholder events hosted by ENZ Japan in 2023 which attracted over 1,000 people. The New Zealand Study Guidebook will remain the main information source referred to and distributed at upcoming education events in Japan.  ENZ encourages NZ providers attending the New Zealand Fair in Tokyo October 2024 to consider advertising in the Study Guidebook to reach your target audience in Japan. 

    Advertisement rates for individual providers range from approx. NZD 2,500 to NZD 6,020 for guidebook and/or website listings. With the “Premier Plan” and “Advertorial Plan”, the school logo will be listed on the new scholarship campaign page built by KBUNSHA. Individual providers can download the proposal here. Advertising copy can be provided in English.

  • Export Education Levy projects from 2016/17

    The annual report covers the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017, and can be found on the Education Counts and ENZ website.

    The levy is paid by education providers who enrol fee-paying international students in New Zealand. 

    “In 2003, the Government introduced the Export Education Levy to fund a wide range of development and risk management initiatives for the export education sector. This includes funding the Code of Practice which oversees the wellbeing of our international students while they are studying in New Zealand, as well as marketing, development, quality assurance and research for the sector,” says Belinda Himiona, Group Manager International Education, Ministry of Education.

    Activities funded by the levy in 2016/17 include:

    Support for promotional activities in ENZ’s priority markets included digital marketing via the Study in New Zealand website, social media campaigns, fairs and events held overseas. It also supported in-bound agent visits and international media familiarisation visits to New Zealand.

    Funding also went into expanding the scope of growth activities, and number of regions participating in ENZ’s Regional Partnership Programme, which works with international education providers, local government, regional economic development agencies and communities to encourage regional growth in international education.

    Funding was also allocated to administering and monitoring the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.  To support the implementation of the new Code of Practice, guidelines and other resources were developed and published on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority’s website. A letter of expectations was sent to all signatories advising them of the new Code of Practice and highlighting their responsibilities

  • Tokyo Board of Education seeks NZ education providers for Masterclass promotional opportunity

    The Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education (BoE) is one of Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao’s (ENZ) education cooperation arrangement partners in Japan. The BoE is currently looking for 1-2 New Zealand education providers to provide online classes for their Virtual Study Abroad session, part of the Tokyo English Channel.  

    These classes are designed to provide Tokyo secondary school students with the opportunity to connect with education providers from around the world, including New Zealand. During these sessions, students are exposed to new ways of thinking from lecturers while interacting and enhancing their communication skills in English with other international participants. The deadline to submit an expression of interest (EOI) is Tuesday 29 May COB NZT. 

    ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager, Misa Kitaoka, said that this opportunity gives New Zealand providers a chance to promote themselves to a wide audience that includes high school students in Japan learning English as a second language as well as a larger audience of English-speaking students from Australia, Canada, Egypt, Finland, France, Indonesia, Jordan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, UAE, and Viet Nam.  

    This is a great opportunity for Education New Zealand and New Zealand providers to work with the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education to co-develop educational materials for a significant number of Japanese secondary school students. In 2023, the BoE Virtual Study Abroad pages received 840,000 views.  

    Lecture videos will include promotional materials from your institution and will be publicly accessible on the BoE website after the Virtual Study Abroad Session,” said Misa.

    The online lectures will contain

    1. Two pre-class videos: Introduction of the lecture theme and discussion topics of approximately 5 minutes each. The pre-recorded videos will be streamed on the Virtual Study Abroad website for students to watch before participating in the actual lecture.  

    2. Actual lecture: Delivered online via Zoom or other video conference system on 14 October or 4 November 2024. The lecture contains:

    1. two-minute school promotion (pre-recorded video)
    2. Lecture Part One. Presentation from the lecturer (10 minutes)
    3. 20 minutes of group discussion
    4. A 10-minute presentation by students 
    5. Lecture Part Two. Presentation from the lecturer (10 minutes)
    6. 20 minutes of group discussion
    7. A 10-minute presentation by students
    8. A five-minute wrap up

    Selection Criteria includes: 

    1. Lecture Theme: Is the lecture theme relevant to New Zealand or the New Zealand-Japan relationship?
    2. Abstract: Does the abstract clearly show New Zealand’s capability or strengths in the selected topic?
    3. Audience: Is the lecture abstract engaging and interesting for the target audience of high school students? 

    The timeline for the EOI process is as follows:

    • 31 May: ENZ submits the New Zealand finalists to Tokyo BoE 
    • 28 June: NZ finalists confirm the lecture title and abstract with Tokyo BoE  
    • 30 August: NZ finalists work with Tokyo BoE nominated vendor to record pre-lectures 
    • 30 August: NZ finalists provide school/institution promotion video* to Tokyo BoE 

    *School/institution promotion video doesn’t have to be recorded for this purpose. The school/institution can provide their existing videos e.g. already on YouTube, etc.  

    14 October or 4 November: Participate in online event

  • November update from Immigration New Zealand

    Update on Student Visa processing*  

    Since New Zealand’s international borders reopened in August 2022, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has received 12,259 student visa applications from international students outside New Zealand. We have decided 7,731 of these applications, with more than half of our decisions made in under four weeks and almost all decisions (95%) made within eight weeks.   

    *Figures current as at 10pm on 19 November 2022.  

    Help us process student visa applications quickly 

    There are common mistakes which can slow down student visa processing. Please make sure applicants supply all required documents when they submit their online visa applications. Checklists on the INZ website the INZ website can help students gather all the information they need for their application.  

    All documents should be: 

    • clear scans (not blurry or missing text) 
    • uploaded separately and under the correct category.  

    Also, a reminder that overseas applicants do not need to use the Approval in Principle process. Their applications are processed faster if they pay their tuition fees upfront and include the provider’s receipt with their applications.   

    Contacting us  

    Our immigration officers are processing visa applications as quickly as possible. Students and their representatives should only contact individual immigration officers when their application is being assessed and pending a decision.  

    For any questions not about a specific in progress application, there are other ways to find the information you are looking for. Check the INZ website first as it has a lot of useful information, including the student checklists. Education providers and licensed immigration advisors can also contact INZ through their established email channels.  

    Pathway visas  

    An increasing number of people are incorrectly applying for Pathway Student Visas, which can cause processing delays.  

    A Pathway Student Visa is for international students who want to study up to three consecutive programmes of study with pathway visa approved education providers on a single visa, or they wish to study a multi-year programme with a pathway visa approved education provider.  

    Students should only apply for a Pathway Visa if they: 

    • have a letter of support from a Pathway education provider (or joint letter if their study is with more than one provider) stating they support the student’s pathway application  
    • have an offer of place for each programme of study, and 
    • can demonstrate they have sufficient and readily available maintenance funds for their first year on the intended pathway and that they can fund any further years of study as per their intended study path; and 
    • have paid (or have sufficient funds to pay) for a minimum of the first year or first programme tuition fees, whichever is applicable. 

    Applicants should only answer ‘Yes’ to the online student visa application form question “Are you applying for a Pathway Student Visa?” if they meet the criteria for a Pathway Student Visa. If they are unsure whether a course meets these requirements, they should talk to their education provider(s).

    If students apply for a Pathway Student Visa incorrectly, their applications will take longer to process as there will be additional tasks for the immigration officer assessing their application.

    If family members (such as  parents)  intend to visit New Zealand briefly to help a student settle into their life and study here, they may need to apply for an NZeTA (if from a visa waiver country) or a General Visitor Visa (if they are from a visa required country).

    Currently there is high demand for General Visitor Visas to travel to New Zealand. If a General Visitor Visa is needed for travel in early 2023, we encourage people to apply for this as soon as possible. Applicants should state in the “Purpose of visit” section of their application that they wish to travel with the student to New Zealand and include the name of the student.

  • Digital skills and global citizenship at #NZAsiaTech Code Camp

    A team of six students from Te Kura Māori o Porirua, a predominantly te reo Māori medium school in Porirua, interacted with school students in Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Viet Nam, Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia.   

    The overall theme was tourism, seen through the lens of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) - a theme that is highly relevant for the Asia-Pacific region. Students were given the task of profiling their home country’s SDG initiatives, with a focus on sustainable tourism.   

    Team Enterprise 12 from Viet Nam work on building website project during #NZAsiaTech Code Camp 

    The North Asia Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence partnered with educational coding programme Code Avengers and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao to deliver the event. 

    “With New Zealand’s borders having been closed for more than two years, it’s crucial that the next generation of students still have opportunities to build cultural competencies and make connections across the globe,” says Education New Zealand’s Regional Director for Asia, Ben Burrowes.   

    “The #NZAsiaTech Code Camp was an opportunity for Kiwi students to re-establish connections with students in other countries, while gaining critical digital skills to prepare them for the future. 

    “It also also gave a taste of New Zealand’s education offering to prospective international students from the Asia region, who might consider enrolling in high school or tertiary study in New Zealand in the future.”  

    Code Camps can help to generate subsequent visits by interested students to New Zealand. For example, the Code Camp held at Waseda Jitsugyo School in 2021 and at Waseda University Junior and Senior High School in 2022 has led to Waseda’s group students’ programme sending around 50 students from three schools to New Zealand for three weeks in March 2023.  Code Camp served as a great opportunity for students and teachers from Waseda University affiliated schools to experience our world-class digital education first-hand. 

    Honam Jeon, the Education Manager at Gangwon International Education Institute said the programme helped increase awareness of New Zealand: 

    “South Korea is very interested in international engagement and exchange programmes for school students. The #NZAsiaTech Code Camp was a perfect example we want to continue to join. Thanks so much again to ENZ for organising the well-structured programme.”    

    The online programme included team building exercises, English learning, HTML coding lessons, and the creation of a website by student teams, to demonstrate their understanding of the importance of sustainable tourism.   

    “As our students look to enter an increasingly globalised word, developing cultural connections and transferable skills is so important,” says Te Kura Māori o Porirua school principal, Whāea Evelyn Wharehinga.  

    “The Code Camp has been an exciting growth experience for our students, who have extended their digital literacy skills while having the chance to connect with students of different ethnicities and cultures across the Asia-Pacific region.”   

    Team Indonesia

    Team Indonesia was the winning team after presenting their newly developed website on Sustainable Tourism to a virtual panel of judges. 

    The students presented their sustainable tourism-themed websites to a panel of expert judges at the awards ceremony on 2 July 2022, with students from Indonesia winning the top prize.  

    Steve Budd of Code Avengers, a global edtech company based in New Zealand, said it was a great programme to participate in.  

    “It was a privilege to gift all participants a one-year free subscription to the Code Avengers site as part of our mission to build lasting digital capabilities for educators and young people, and bridge the digital divide,” says Budd.
