  • Update from Immigration New Zealand

    Update for international students: In-study work hours increasing from 3 November 

    From 3 November 2025, eligible international students will be able to work up to 25 hours per week during the semester - an increase from the current 20-hour limit. This change applies to all new student visas granted from that date, even if the application was submitted earlier. 

    If international students hold a student visa with a 20-hour work limit and want to take advantage of the new 25-hour allowance, they will need to apply for a variation of conditions (VOC) or a new student visa and pay the relevant fee 

    They can choose to apply now for the extra five hours or if their visa allows full-time work during summer vacation then they do not require the extra five hours and may choose to wait until later to apply for a variation. Some students will choose not to apply for a variation of conditions at all, and wait until their next student visa application  

    The process for applying for a variation of conditions depends on which system a visa was submitted through i.e. the old system or through enhanced Immigration Online.

    Update for international students: Changing your education provider or lowering your level of study from 3 November 2025 

    If a student visa holder is planning to change education provider or lower their level of study (for example, from a degree to a diploma), they’ll need to apply for a new student visa - not just a variation of conditions. 

    Upcoming changes to student visa work rights: Immigration New Zealand

    This requirement ensures their visa accurately reflects the new study situation and complies with immigration requirements.  

    Before making any changes, students or their representatives should check the INZ website for guidance on how to apply for a new student visa on enhanced Immigration Online and ensure they apply in advance to avoid any disruption to their studies.

    Update for international students: Keep your visa photo filter free 

    We all like to look our best, but to avoid delays or declines, visa application photos must be a true, unedited likeness. That means students must abandon those filters and submit an accurate photo in order to avoid processing delays or declines. 

    Immigration New Zealand uses facial recognition, so filters, AI edits, or beauty enhancements interfere with identity checks. Photos must meet international biometric standards - natural skin tones, clear lighting, and no digital alterations. 

    Edited images including smoothing skin, changing eye size, reshaping facial features, or cropping your head onto a plain background will cause delays in processing and may lead to declined applications.  

    Key tips: 

    • Don’t use selfies - get someone to take your photo or use a professional. 
    • Tell photographers not to apply digital enhancements, like beauty filters or AI adjustments. 
    • Some photo apps or online tools may not be suitable for visa applications.

    Guardian visitor visa applications moving online from 3 November 

    From 3 November 2025, all Guardian Visitor Visa applications should be submitted on Immigration New Zealand’s enhanced Immigration Online system. This update is part of INZ’s broader digital transformation, aimed at improving the visa experience for families supporting international students. 

    While the information required remains the same, the application form may look a little different.  

    The enhanced system offers better application tracking and a more streamlined experience for applicants. Updated guidance and support materials are built into the form. 

    If you have an application in draft or submitted under the old application form, you will still be able to access or submit this application after 3 November 2025. We will notify you when the old application form is due to close.  

    For current visa holders, if your child is applying for a new student visa and you intend to apply for another Guardian Visitor Visa, both applications should be submitted through the enhanced system.  

    This change is particularly relevant for education providers, agents, and advisers supporting families of international students. Please share this update with your networks and encourage early preparation ahead of the transition.

  • From Viet Nam to Aotearoa: 20 bright minds awarded school scholarships

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) proudly celebrated the achievements of 20 outstanding Vietnamese students at the New Zealand School Scholarships (NZSS) 2025 awards ceremony and pre-departure briefing, held on 22 June 2025 in Ho Chi Minh city. 

    The event marked a milestone for these young students and their families, as they prepare to embark on a transformative education journey in New Zealand. It also served as a valuable orientation platform, offering practical insights into studying and living in New Zealand through sharing sessions led by NZSS alumni and their parents. 

    Now in its fifth year, the NZSS programme continues to strengthen its footprint with a record 45 participating New Zealand high schools and 47 fully completed applications resulting in 20 winners this year. 

    Among the New Zealand schools that successfully secured NZSS students, one private and four public schools joined for the first time a testament to the programme’s growing influence and effectiveness in engaging with the education market in Viet Nam. 

    Participation in NZSS plays a vital role in raising New Zealand schools profile in Viet Nam. ENZ rolled out the 2025 NZSS campaign from January to March, with additional amplification in June, generating 48 media clippings with a combined PR value of NZD 131,000 and a social media reach of over 2 million in Viet Nam.  

    Speaking at the ceremony, New Zealand Consul-General and Trade Commissioner in Ho Chi Minh City, Scott James, said: You had many choices for your education, and you chose New Zealand. For that, we are truly grateful.

    Nguyễn Thiện Nhân, one of the 2025 awardees, shared his emotions on receiving the scholarship: 

    Being selected for this scholarship is not only one of the greatest honours of my life, but a moment that reminds me that hard work, belief, and perseverance can lead to something truly life changing. The more I learned about New Zealand its values, its education system, and its people the more I felt a strong connection. I realised: this isn’t just a place to study, it’s a place to grow.” 

    ENZ Regional Director – Asia (excluding China), Ben Burrowes, said he is proud to see the tangible impact of this scholarship.  
     
    Many NZSS alumni have already achieved great success in their study and personal development journeys. Some are now beginning their careers in New Zealand, joining our workforce and contributing meaningfully to our economy and communities,” he said.   

    These achievements reflect both their talent and the opportunity the NZSS programme provides, and we are confident today’s recipients will follow in their footsteps, Ben added. 

    This year’s scholarship ceremony coincided with the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Viet Nam a fitting backdrop to a programme that continues to strengthen people-to-people ties and foster future global citizens.

  • Students flocking to Study in New Zealand website

    SiNZ is now the top-ranking site in Google results for people in the UK, US, India, Thailand and Viet Nam when they search ‘studying in New Zealand’. It also ranks highly for ‘cost of living New Zealand’ and ‘universities in New Zealand’.

    From December 2016 to January 2017, organic (unpaid) traffic to SiNZ increased by 24%, which means that the site is easier to find online. The SiNZ pages driving the most organic traffic include Scholarships, Study options and Work while you study.

    Lucia Alarcon, ENZ’s International Digital Project Manager, said SEO (search engine optimisation) is a long-term strategy that helps make the site increasingly easy to find online.

    "Having a SEO strategy helps to drive the right traffic to studyinnewzealand.govt.nz, growing value and conversion opportunities,” said Lucia.

    As a result of this work, the bounce rate (the percentage of visitors who leave the site after seeing only one page) dropped from 15% to 13% between December 2016 and January this year.

    Organic visits from mobile phones have increased 61% since July last year, corresponding with an impressive 70% increase in referral conversions from mobile phones. The site has also had a 44% increase in organic visits from tablet devices since last July.

    These results demonstrate the importance of the site in raising awareness of the benefits of studying in New Zealand and in increasing referrals to institutions.

    Other work contributing to these results includes better use of insights to create more engaging content, and tighter integration of social media channels with SEO, which ensures a more secure website that meets Google’s mobile-friendly criteria.

  • Added ability for searching New Zealand education organisations

    While there has always been the ability to find education organisations on the site by region and type, users can now also choose to filter organisations by their NZQA assigned provider category.

    Provider categories are either Category 1, 2, 3 or 4 and are reflective of the findings of the institutions most recent External Evaluation and Review.

    The enhancement to the website search function is in response to feedback from the education sector and improves access to information for international students and their agents looking to enrol in courses in New Zealand, as well as students, parents and the public wanting to know more about NZQA-registered tertiary providers.

  • Creating a China-first digital ecosystem

    Western websites and social media platforms have issues with accessibility, performance and loading speed in China, so ENZ has had to create bespoke digital technology to share the New Zealand education story with Chinese students.

    ENZ carried out focus groups with Chinese international students to gather insights while designing the website to ensure it met the needs of a Chinese audience.

    Its new website has a China domain name (.cn), has been search engine-optimised and is tracked with Baidu analytics (China’s equivalent of Google).

    The site has also been integrated with ENZ’s database marketing system, enabling ENZ to follow up leads and capture marketing data. Having a .cn domain name enables ENZ to run a marketing campaign to boost its search rankings in Baidu.

    The site works strategically with ENZ’s account on WeChat, China’s most popular social media app with more than one billion users.

    ENZ has had an account on WeChat since 2014, and now has more than 53,000 followers.

    In October last year, ENZ brought My StudyNZ to WeChat. My StudyNZ provides personalised study matches for international students exploring study in New Zealand.

    Three-quarters of people using My StudyNZ on WeChat browse their study matches for almost two minutes, which is a good level of engagement.

    Students using My StudyNZ in China are more likely to fund their own studies than students globally (76% compared to 33%) and more likely to have tuition budgets of more than $30,000 (30% compared to 15%). Ten percent are interested in studying at a school, compared to 3% of students globally, which illustrates the high value of this market.

    ENZ’s International Social Engagement Specialist, Nicole Baird, said ENZ has a frequent calendar of social media posts to engage with its WeChat audience.

    “We are also increasing our capabilities to segment our WeChat audience to direct content specific to each follower’s needs,” Nicole said.

    ENZ’s Digital Programme Manager, Lucia Alarcon, said ENZ’s bigger and more robust ecosystem offers useful insights to help inform its marketing strategy.

    “We are able to strengthen and increase our data capabilities and gain insights to inform our marketing decisions.”

  • ENZ social platforms gain momentum in China

    ENZ opened its official Weibo (China’s equivalent of Twitter) and Wechat (a quasi-combination of Facebook and WhatsApp) account in August 2014. So far, we have around 60,000 followers on both platforms combined.

    To increase numbers, at the annual China Education Expo in October, ENZ shared QR codes of our social media channels with visitors at the ENZ booths, accumulating 230 followers in two days. A similar approach at the China International Import Expo in November attracted a further 300 new followers.

    ENZ also launched a WeChat mini-programme that helps followers to make use of the My StudyNZ tool to find and match with education providers in New Zealand.

    ENZ’s Regional Director – China & North Asia, Adele Bryant, said these social platforms are a key way to connect with Chinese students. New Zealand Education Minister Chris Hipkins was very supportive of ENZ’s social media efforts during his visit to China in July.

    “Despite his packed schedule, Minister Hipkins filmed a short video promoting New Zealand education to our social media communities, which was shared on the New Zealand Embassy WeChat account and received 750 views and likes.”

    In addition to the social platforms, ENZ has developed a China-based student-facing website which will enable smoother access for Chinese students, parents and agents.

    “The new website means students can find it in the Chinese search engine more easily as it is hosted in Chinese domain,” says Adele.

    “We will launch the new website soon so stay logged on!”

    An estimated 30% to 40% fewer international students are expected on American college campuses in the fall of 2025, compared with trends in the 2024-2025 academic year, according to NAFSA: Association of International Educators. 

  • New Zealand to be Country of Honour at the China Annual Conference and Expo for International Education (CACIE) 2025

    ENZ Chief Executive Amanda Malu was recently in Beijing attending the China Annual Conference and Expo for International Education (CACIE). There, as part of the announcement, Amanda gave a keynote speech at the CACIE Night gala dinner and highlighted the broad and important education links between New Zealand and China. New Zealand was previously Country of Honour at CACIE in 2015.

    CACIE is the largest annual international education event for businesses and students in China. Over 20,000 visitors attended the expo, with an estimated 5,000 people in the audience at the opening plenary.

    There are ample opportunities to showcase New Zealand at 2025 CACIE and leverage our COH status to raise awareness of New Zealand  through a strong in-person presence, New Zealand-focused events, cultural performances and media engagements.

    The ENZ team will work through peak bodies on feedback and input from the sector on the New Zealand presence and events at CACIE.

    Highlights from New Zealand’s presence at this year’s conference

    Amanda met with LIU Limen, President of the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE). The association is the host and organiser of the conference. 

    ENZ partnered with Tourism New Zealand to deliver the New Zealand Study Tours: Engaging in Quality Education and Success Pathways roundtable session which was opened with remarks by H.E. Grahame Morton, New Zealand Ambassador to People’s Republic of China. It was well attended; it became standing room only in the seminar room.

    The New Zealand pavilion comprised of twelve New Zealand institutions. All eight universities, Te Pūkenga New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, ACG schools, Pacific International Hotel Management School, and New Zealand Tertiary College joined ENZ on the pavilion.
