  • Kiwi educational publishers promote NZ at Frankfurt fair

    Running over five days in early October, the Frankfurt Book Fair saw publishers, agents and authors from all over the world converge to deal in rights and talk books, with many opportunities to forge new publishing relationships. 

    This year, nine publishers from commercial and educational areas of New Zealand publishing shared the collective stand under the PANZ (Publishers Association of New Zealand) banner, with ENZ proudly sponsoring Dame Wendy Pye, Sunshine Publishing; Tracy Strudley, Global Education Systems Ltd; and Nicola Smith, Essential Resources. 

    New Zealand publishers have steadily cemented a firm and respected place at the fair, riding high on the back of being Guest of Honour in 2012. 

    PANZ President and Publisher at Oratia Media, Peter Dowling said the support from Creative New Zealand and Education New Zealand has helped them to promote New Zealand literature and educational publishing internationally.

    “With help from these two agencies, we’ve worked hard to expand New Zealand’s global presence over the last year, adding two new book fairs to our roster alongside Frankfurt — the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in March, and the Guadalajara International Book Fair in November.”

    For many educational publishers, these fairs are key platforms to launch globally. To help educational publishers prepare for these opportunities PANZ, supported by ENZ, will host a free networking lunch and workshop in Auckland focussing on export rights. This will be a valuable opportunity for educational publishers interested in extending their international reach, and is open to non-PANZ Members.

  • Update: Developing Viet Nam for the New Zealand school sector

    John Laxon, ENZ Regional Director - South, South East Asia & the Middle East, would like to thank the 87 schools that participated in the webinar (a recording is available on IntelliLab here) and the 56 schools that have expressed interest in participating in a sector-wide initiative for Viet Nam.

    “We’re excited by the overwhelming interest from New Zealand schools in a co-ordinated market development plan for Viet Nam and look forward to partnering with them to grow the numbers of Vietnamese school students in New Zealand.”

    ENZ is now working with SIEBA on how New Zealand schools can be involved in the strategy or broader market development initiatives. This process will include capturing the wide variety of secondary schools including state, integrated and independent schools along with a mix of single sex and co-ed schools.

    Richard Kyle, ENZ Business Development Manager, says the aim is to ensure representation from as many regions as possible to showcase both the variety of the school sector and New Zealand communities.

    “It is challenging but we want to get it right, as selected schools will have priority at the ENZ fairs in Viet Nam in March,” said Richard.

    ENZ hopes to inform all schools of their involvement in the strategy or broader market development initiatives by the week beginning 18 November.

  • Immigration New Zealand update

    Pathway visa pilot extension

    With a significant amount of change happening during the second half of this year, INZ has not been able to sufficiently advance the development of the pathway student visa policy.

    As a result, the existing pathway student visa pilot will be extended to 30 April 2019. This extension will come into effect on 26 November 2018, along with a number of other scheduled immigration changes.

    Celia says this means all current pilot participants will be able to continue offering pathway student visas, and pathway student visa applications will continue to be accepted up until 30 April 2019.

    “We have taken on board the feedback we have received during the consultation with the education sector. We will continue to work on reviewing the pathway student visa into 2019 and we are extending the pilot to allow for this. The education peak sector bodies will be informed and involved throughout this process” says Celia.

    As part of the extension, INZ will also make the following improvements on 26 November 2018:

    • A dedicated online pathway student visa application form, including the ability to enter up to three programmes of study and education providers
    • One eVisa approval letter that includes the details of each programme of study (including the start and end dates)
    • Enhanced guidelines on the INZ website for pathway student visa applicants
    • Enhanced guidelines and training for Immigration New Zealand staff processing pathway student visas.  

    Please note: no new providers will be added in for this extension. Entry criteria for providers will be part of the work being done early next year.

    Post-study work visa changes come into effect

    In August 2018, the Government announced changes to the post-study work visa policy to ensure that post-study pathways for international students are fit for purpose. These changes come into effect on 26 November 2018.

    Transitional provisions will be introduced to ensure students who were studying or had applied for a student visa as at 8 August 2018 will not be affected by the changes.

  • ENZ launches China Savvy

    Developed by ENZ’s in-market China team in collaboration with New Zealand providers, China Savvy aims to equip New Zealand education providers with insights into Chinese students, best practice for the China market, and practical advice on how to succeed in education business in China.

    China Savvy is open to all New Zealand providers via the Skills Lab and includes videos with animated learning and links to various reports and online resources. 

    Specific lessons include Chinese education customer motivations, presenting to Chinese audiences, planning business trips to China, navigating Chinese meal and gift culture and making the best use of Chinese social media (namely, WeChat) – giving users a rich picture so they can approach the China market with confidence. 

    ENZ International Market Manager for China, Ross Fisher, anticipates China Savvy will be most suitable for the school sector but says there are plenty of transferable insights for other sectors too.

    “We’ve tried to create a ‘blended’ learning experience for international education professionals starting out in China, as well those informed practitioners already operating in the market who are looking for some additional insights into best practice, product development, marketing and the mind of the Chinese education customer.”

  • Sino-New Zealand vocational teacher training in China

    As part of its Model Programme work plan for 2018-2019, a Sino-New Zealand Vocational Education Model Programme Teacher Training Base was established last week in Qingdao Technical College (QTC), one of the key Chinese institution partners for New Zealand ITPs.

    Attendees at the launch included programme partners David Christiansen, Acting CEO of Wintec, and Liu Yufeng, Director from CIVTE, and Liu Baoming, Deputy Director General of CIVTE (Central Institute of Vocational and Technical Education).

    Adele Bryant, ENZ’s Regional Director – China & North Asia said while Chinese TVET teachers have previously travelled to New Zealand to learn from ITPs about curriculum development, teaching and learning approaches, the base offers another avenue – bringing learning to Chinese teachers who cannot travel to New Zealand.

    “The training has been well-received by Chinese teachers who have taken what they learned in New Zealand and put it into effect in classrooms in China. New Zealand institutions have also benefited from the development of new relationships that have formed over the years as more Chinese colleges have entered the programme,” said Adele.

    New Zealand and China have collaborated on vocational education since 2013 when the two countries signed the Strategic Education Partnership Arrangement to encourage joint projects and enhance policy and research dialogue in the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector.  

    The Chinese government is due to release its National Implementation Plan for Vocational Education Reform soon and is expected to continue to give high priority and significant investment to the upgrading of its vocational workforce. 

    According to the Chinese Ministry of Education, in 2017 there were 1,388 higher vocational education institutions and 8,181 secondary vocational colleges in China.

  • Mortal Engines offers ENZ opportunity to showcase education strengths in creative arts to prospective students

    The New Zealand premiere of Mortal Engines took place in Auckland last night and the film is released to New Zealand audiences from today.

    ENZ and the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) have partnered with Universal Pictures, MRC and Hungry City Limited on the film as part of the New Zealand Screen Production Grant 5% uplift.

    ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson says this partnership is a great opportunity to build awareness of New Zealand’s world-leading education system – particularly in the creative industries.

    Mortal Engines marks a real shift in the New Zealand story we want to tell the world,” Mr McPherson says.

    “This film was made in New Zealand not because of the beauty of our landscapes but because of the depth of talent and level of technical sophistication available here.

    “The partnership allows us to showcase New Zealand’s education strengths in the creative arts. It supports our brand positioning of New Zealand as a modern, dynamic and innovative country with a lot to offer in the highly competitive international education market.”

    The last few years have already seen growing numbers of international students studying creative arts in New Zealand – 5,139 in 2017, up 24% on 2012.

    Principal photography took place in Wellington in early 2017, and involved more than 1000 New Zealanders including crew, cast and craftspeople. The film was shot at Stone Street and Avalon Studios and at a few small local exterior locations. Post production was completed by Park Road Post Production with visual effects work realised by Academy-Award winning company Weta Digital.

    Crew members included recent graduates (including several former international students): an assistant props designer who studied Industrial Design at Victoria University of Wellington, an apprentice editor who studied at South Seas Film School in Auckland, a film editor with a Bachelor of Digital Design from Auckland University of Technology, and a visual special effects capture booth photographer who studied animation at Yoobee School.

    Grant says the partnership has provided an opportunity for ENZ to tell graduates’ stories to other prospective international students through an integrated promotional campaign, including PR, digital marketing and social media activity across our channels which have more than one million followers.

    The campaign will begin in January 2019. There will be a Mortal Engines page on the Study in New Zealand website which will encourage prospective students to sign up to ENZ’s database. A series of emails will follow to this qualified audience providing information about a variety of design disciplines and courses related to filmmaking.

    “Our goal is to generate awareness of New Zealand’s specialised courses and hands-on learning style in the creative industries through sharing videos and profiles celebrating our graduates who worked on the film,” says Grant.

    “We look forward to getting the marketing campaign underway next month, and attracting more high-quality, creative international students to study in our institutions.”

  • Calling all China research specialists

    Since its inception in 2005, the Tripartite Fund has supported the development of strategic research relationships between New Zealand and China. 

    Universities are invited to submit proposals for the latest round, with up to $30,000 available per application to support quality, high-level research and collaboration. The fund seeks to initiate new tripartite partnerships and facilitate the development of existing partnerships between a New Zealand university and two Chinese partner universities.  

    Eligible Tripartite Fund subjects can be drawn from the arts, humanities, social sciences, sciences and applied sciences including agriculture, food safety, conservation, forestry, advanced materials engineering and environmental science. 

    The Tripartite Fund has enabled many high-achieving New Zealand academics to develop relationships with Chinese research partners.

    Since 2009, Auckland University of Technology (AUT) has worked on tripartite collaborative projects with Shanghai Jiao-Tong University (SJTU) and Xinjiang University in China.

    Nikola Kasabov, AUT Professor of Computer Science and Director KEDRI, said that the ‘three brothers’ partners have exchanged multiple visits of both staff members and students.

    “The outcomes have been outstanding, including a large number of joint papers published in international journals and conferences, joint methods and software development in computational intelligence and applications in health, environment protection, and predicting hazardous events.”

    Professor Kasabov was also appointed as Advisory Professor to SJTU, meeting with PhD students and staff on an annual basis.

    “The collaboration helps staff and students to work together on new frontiers of information and computer sciences and technologies along with important applications for both countries.”

    The deadline for applications is 1 March 2019, with a project start date of 1 May 2019, and end 30 April 2020.

  • Introducing International Education Sector Future Directions

    “The challenge sector representatives are seeking to address is to identify a series of priorities and actions in international education that can be worked on collaboratively,” said ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson.

    The programme is complementary to the recently launched cross-government International Education Strategy for New Zealand, which was co-developed by ENZ and the Ministry of Education. 

    “Priorities identified through the workshops include more collaboration, facilitating student pathways, joint activation of new markets offshore and prioritising the student when it comes to decision making,” said Grant.   

    The work was initially proposed at September’s International Education Peak Body Forum, attended by representatives of Universities New Zealand, ITP International, Quality Tertiary Institutions, Independent Tertiary Education NZ (ITENZ), English NZ, Schools International Education Business Association of NZ (SIEBA) and Independent Schools NZ.

    Five sub-sector workshops were held in October and November, run by an independent facilitator, with a range of representatives attending each. Areas of common interest were fed into a pan-sector workshop at the end of November. The Peak Body Forum will govern the process from this point.

    “This piece of work is a long-term project – and we plan to keep the sector as updated as possible throughout the process to ensure everyone has the chance to contribute,” said Grant.

  • Indian and Kiwi students explore water issues

    The Untouched World Foundation’s (UWF) Waterwise Leadership and Global Citizenship Programme gave students the opportunity to learn about the entirety of the water resource chain - from primary energy players, through to farming, recreation, cultural and conservation interests.

    Taking part were students and teachers from Otago secondary schools, tertiary institutions and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP). Representatives from YESPeace Youth Network in Asia also attended.

    The programme involved a week of activities which included visits to lakes, rivers, vineyards and orchards, discussions with water and land use and tourism and irrigation experts, and interviews with locals.

    “Youth leadership is firstly about agency – understanding the many facets of the issue, developing the transferable skills to collaborate with others, acting responsibly and then finding a clear path to actively and positively model their own views and behaviour. It is vital we all listen and engage with an international perspective on these issues,” says Mark Prain, Executive Director of UWF. 

    Key partners included Otago Regional Council, Otago Community Trust and Contact Energy. Further support was also provided by ENZ, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Ngai Tahu.

    “Otago Polytechnic believes educating youth on key issues facing society, unlocking their unique leadership potential and inspiring them to become active change-makers is vital,” said Marc Doesburg, Otago Polytechnic Director Globalisation.

    Last week’s activities are just part of a range of ongoing initiatives.  An “Acts of Kindness’” Campaign is also being developed and will involve MGIEP and UWF mobilising youth in partner institutions to foster meaningful exchange of ideas, knowledge and action towards the achievement of UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals.

    Organisers are aiming to establish a New Zealand-India youth leadership exchange programme with a focus on fostering youth leadership, which is a key aspect of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Global Action Programme.
