  • Immigration New Zealand email error

    Due to an administrative error, some partners and dependents of international students with work rights may have received an email from INZ on 23 December 2020 that incorrectly stated their visas may have been eligible for a six month extension. Student visas have not been extended.

    Those who received the email incorrectly will need to apply for a further visa or arrange to depart New Zealand before their current visa expires. Further information on applying for visas is available on the Immigration New Zealand website or an immigration professional can help.

    We acknowledge this is a stressful process for students and their families.

  • ENZ confirms 2021 Recognised Agencies

    Education agents play a crucial role in New Zealand's international education ecosystem, including supporting students and their families during COVID-19.

    ENZ’s recognised agent (ENZRA) programme aims to increase engagement with quality education agencies that have demonstrated a long-term commitment to promoting New Zealand as an international study destination.

    More than ever, ENZ Recognised Agencies contribute to a unique and high-quality student experience and to the positioning, market share and overall achievement of New Zealand within the international education sector.

    To acknowledge the impacts of COVID-19 on agents and their inability to place students with education providers in New Zealand, all current Recognised Agencies were provided an opportunity to extend their time in the programme subject to meeting conduct requirements.

    The new list of ENZ Recognised Agencies is now available to view online on our StudywithNewZealand website. For queries regarding education agents, please email: agenthelp@enz.govt.nz.

    The next round of applications to the programme will open in early 2022.

  • MIQ costs changing for temporary visa holders

    Our managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities are an essential part of our COVID-19 defence system.  The fees charged to people who stay in MIQ are designed to strike a balance between the benefits to both the New Zealand public of having such a robust system, and those who leave and enter the country.

    Currently, temporary entry visa class holders are liable to pay $3,100 for 14 days in managed isolation. 

    From 12:01am on 25 March 2021, anyone entering New Zealand on a temporary visa is now liable to pay the MIQ fee of: 

    • $5,520 (including GST) for the first or only person in the room;
    • $2,990 for an additional adult in the same room;
    • $1,610 for an additional child (aged 3-17 years) in the same room.

    Charges for some stays in managed isolation were introduced in August 2020, as it was not financially sustainable for the Government to continue to fund all the costs of MIQ. The fees were set at two levels: one for returning New Zealanders and one for some temporary visa holders.

    These new charges will help ensure the ongoing financial sustainability of MIQ, which is now expected to remain in place for at least the rest of 2021. However, as time has passed, Cabinet has decided that more people entering the country should contribute to the costs of their MIQ stay.

    The fee level temporary visa holders pay is closer to the actual cost of MIQ, although the Government is still subsidising some of the cost.

    The new fees are the same as those charged to critical workers entering the country under a border exception. Critical healthcare workers entering under a border exception will continue to be charged the current standard fee of $3,100 to ensure the healthcare workforce can be quickly scaled up in case of a resurgence of COVID-19.

    MBIE can grant a full or partial waiver of managed isolation fees in cases of financial hardship or other special circumstances, or arrange a deferment of payment, for temporary entry visa class holders.

  • ENZ launches new tool to help students with visa application process

    Developed as a resource for both students and education agents, the video guides students through the steps of applying for a visa to study in Aotearoa, New Zealand. The video, now available in English, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Thai, offers students helpful tips to increase their chances of a successful visa application outcome. 

    As we near the October and March period when Immigration New Zealand (INZ) receives its highest volume of visa applications it is important that students not only apply early for their visa but also complete their application properly to ensure it is processed as quickly as possible. INZ recommends that students apply at least three months before their intended travel date to give them the best chance of having their application decided in time.  

    The visa videos are free to download from Brand Lab and can be used across the marketing channels of individual education providers. The English language version of the video is also publicly available on YouTube and on the Study with New Zealand website. 

  • New Zealand Passenger Arrival Cards to be phased out

    Customs New Zealand | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa has announced that Passenger Arrival Cards will be phased out, to be replaced by New Zealand Traveller Declaration | Whakapuakanga Tangata Haere ki Aotearoa cards by early 2024. There will be a transition period between 1 December 2023 and 31 March 2024, during which both Passenger Arrival Cards and New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) cards will be accepted. However, after 31 March 2024, only NZTD cards will be in circulation. These will be available through the NZTD mobile app or website. Paper forms will continue to be available for travellers who cannot complete the form online and will be accepted as a paper-based version of the digital NZTD at the air border. Passengers travelling by sea are not currently required to complete a digital declaration.

  • Masterclass opportunity in Japan

    Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education will be hosting a virtual study abroad event on 23 of September, connecting secondary school students in Tokyo and beyond with tertiary institutions from Australia and New Zealand.

    This half-day event will feature lectures in an interactive format so providers can engage with Japanese students. Selected tertiary institutions will also have an opportunity to work with the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education to produce additional content introducing their institutions and programmes to prospective international students. 

    Recordings will be made for the virtual study abroad event and will be shared on the Tokyo English Channel website which will launch in June 2021.

    “This is a great opportunity for Education New Zealand and New Zealand tertiary providers to work with the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education to co-develop educational materials for the Japanese secondary school students. The content produced for the event will also be shared at future promotional events hosted by Education New Zealand and the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo.” ENZ Director of Education – Japan, Misa Kitaoka, says.

    Director at the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education, Yuki Sato, looks forward to receiving proposals from the New Zealand providers.

    “We are excited to work with New Zealand tertiary institutions to showcase the virtual study abroad event offering Tokyo secondary school students an opportunity to connect with the world and enhance their communication skills in English. Students can expect of learn new ways of thinking from the lecturers and interact with other participants from around the world, including New Zealand.”   

    Education New Zealand signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education in 2017 to promote education exchange and cooperation between Tokyo and New Zealand. Since then, a range of projects have been initiated between the two parties including the co-development of online education material for intermediate English learners through the Tokyo Global Studio.

  • ENZ partners with ISANA to support sector capability

    Under the initiative, ISANA NZ will develop a suite of resources including guidelines, templates and frameworks to help support international education practitioners across the school and tertiary sectors.

    The resources will cover areas such as student support, student experience, critical incident management, intercultural competence, and professional leadership. They will be developed in concert with practitioners.

    ENZ Director Industry Laura Simpson says the initiative has been developed with recovery of the sector in mind.

    “This initiative focuses on the longer-term development of the international education sector’s capability. The resources are being developed to provide additional support for practitioners who support students and will help support the sector’s recovery. The initiative has been designed to support Goal 1 of the New Zealand International Education Strategy, 2018-2030, to ensure an excellent education and student experience.”

    ISANA NZ Executive Director Chris Beard says the work will identify and make available online a range of versatile resources that reflect good practice across the sector.

    “The materials will provide practical guidance, frameworks and models to help practitioners facilitate positive student experiences in areas such as intercultural engagement, social integration, mental health and student wellbeing. We are looking forward to developing the resources in partnership with experienced practitioners and subject-specific experts to ensure they are accessible, relevant and useful.”

    The resources will be developed over the next year in partnership with practitioners and stakeholders from across the sector. They will progressively be made available to the sector on ISANA’s website and ENZ’s Skills Lab.

  • Strong interest in NZ from Filipino students at the Te Pūkenga Agent Workshop and NZ Study Workshop 2023

    55 education agents representing 27 agencies from across the Philippines attended the one-day workshop on 27 October. The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for the four Te Pūkenga representatives, including Bipul Das, Kerry Clarke, Prashanth Nallur Puttaswamy and Richard Cao, to share their most recent updates and developments, including information on Te Pūkenga’s vocational education offerings. 

    ENZ’s Market Manager – Philippines & Thailand, Chortip Pramoolpol, supplied an update on ENZ’s activities and showcased the array of tools and resources available to empower education agents in promoting New Zealand as a study destination. Joining the workshop remotely were key figures from Immigration New Zealand. Celia Coombes, Manager of International Education, Dolores Hyde, Senior Advisor for International Education, and Philippa Lee, Immigration Officer, Visa Operations, delivered a comprehensive briefing on student visa applications and post-study work rights.     Bipul Das from Te Pūkenga’s International Team said that it was incredibly valuable to be able to meet face to face with education agents and prospective students in the Philippines. 

    “It was wonderful to see the education agencies are excited to promote New Zealand as the preferred study destination for vocational education and we are grateful for the support from ENZ, our Education Agents and INZ on the work being done in the Philippines market. We will continue to focus on growing our international student population from the Philippines, " said Bipul. 

    Following on from the workshop, ENZ and Te Pūkenga welcomed over 170 visitors to the NZ Study Expo 2023. The event provided a unique platform for attendees to explore the breadth of opportunities in New Zealand including specific courses, scholarships, and post-study opportunities and discuss these personally with the NZ representatives on-hand.

    New Zealand Ambassador His Excellency Peter Kell presided the event and shared his remarks, encouraging Filipinos and their families, to choose New Zealand as a destination to continue their education journey.  

    Ambassador Kell told the audience “This event is more than just a fair; it is a bridge that connects aspirations with opportunities. It is a platform for our Filipino students to explore and embrace new horizons, to acquire skills and knowledge that will empower you to become leaders in your chosen fields.  

    “New Zealand’s education system is often highly regarded and ranked in the world for preparing students for the future. Our education providers often have strong connections to industry and the business community. This facilitates internships, work placements, and real-world experiences for students, preparing them for the workforce,’ he added.  

    ENZ Market Manager – Philippines & Thailand, Chortip Pramoolpol, was excited to have had the opportunity to speak face to face with interested students and their families following the pandemic.  

    “There is certainly a lot to be said for being able to explain in-person to prospective students and their families, why they must consider New Zealand as a destination for future study and we were so pleased to see such genuine interest.  

    These events generated dozens of leads which has helped drive a significant increase in in visits and enquiries from Filipino students to the Study with New Zealand website,” added Chortip.

  • Bringing Us Together – TVET in the Asia-Pacific

    The Global COVID pandemic has put skills issues and innovation on the center stage, as governments, industries, and educators alike work to upskill and reskill workforces disrupted by the pandemic and ensure strong working futures. 

    The APAC TVET Forum will bring together the necessary key groups for effective TVET: Governments, Industries, and Educators.  The Forum will offer Government to Government (G2G), Business to Business (B2B), and System-to-System content streams, then  “bring us together” for a cross-system conversation across the APAC region.   
     
    The Forum will be free to register, and held over two Fridays (5 November and Friday 12 November, 2021) across the following local times:

    • Bangkok, Thailand 09.30-14.00
    • Beijing, China 10.30-15.00
    • AEDT 13.30-18.00
    • Samoa 14.30-19.00
    • New Zealand 15.30-19.30

    We will hear from senior government officials, major companies, international agencies and organisations, and TVET sector leaders from around the APAC region. 

    The New Zealand partners include New Zealand government’s international education agency, its largest private sector vocational education consultancy, and New Zealand’s new national institution for Vocational Education and Training.

  • Fifty years celebrated with Chile

    Cultural performances, together with a series of panel discussions on government initiatives, research connections, educational exchanges, and the experience of Chileans in New Zealand showcased the variety and depth of the relationships that have been developed over the past 50 years. 

    Speakers included both Ambassadors, as well as academics from all New Zealand’s universities, alongside alumni and government specialists. A number of distinguished guests were part of the large audience that attended throughout the day at Parliament Buildings in Wellington and online.
