Meet the Team: Lisa Futschek
Hi Lisa. Could you please outline your own role and the role of the International team?
ENZ’s International Team delivers on the strategies our organisation sets to best position New Zealand as an education partner in our key offshore markets. It’s a two-way flow with our skilled offshore teams not only delivering a vast array of in-market initiatives, but also providing crucial market intel contributing to the setting of our core strategies and objectives.
We ask a lot of our teams. Not only do they bring crucial language skills and a deep understanding of the cultural context, but they are also marketers, event organisers, Government-to-Government experts, relationship managers, skilled communicators and more. They need to be as comfortable talking with a Minister as they are with a student seeking an education in New Zealand.
My role is to set the direction, to coach, mentor, energise, and to ensure that the output of our team plays its part in realising the overall vision of our organisation.
How is the COVID-19 pandemic impacting your team’s work?
The impacts of COVID-19 on the International Team’s work have been wide-ranging.
The first order of things related to the closed borders and the need to cancel, postpone or re-imagine the large number of in-market events that had been planned.
At the same time, there was a square focus for both ENZ’s off- and onshore teams to support the experience of those international students who remained in New Zealand or had been unable to get here. This included everything from their access to online learning, accommodation needs, physical and emotional wellbeing, support through hardship, visa queries and connection to repatriation flights.
Throughout all of this, the offshore teams have been heavily engaged in communicating with a full range of stakeholders – students, parents, agents, industry partners, NZ Inc partners and governements – to keep them abreast of developments and to assist in responding to their wide-ranging information needs.
Can you tell me a bit about your own professional background?
I’ve always been interested in international relations. I spent 18 years as a career diplomat with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), living and working in Chile, Germany and New York City.
Through those 18 years at MFAT, I gained an understanding of New Zealand’s place in the world. There is no doubt that we punch above our weight. Positioning our nation globally through diplomacy is highly rewarding but it is also a long game.
What I have found particularly satisfying since joining Education New Zealand in 2013 is the short gap between effort and result. We get to see very quickly the impact of our work on thousands upon thousands of people whose lives have been transformed by a New Zealand education. I’m proud to be able to play a part in that.
People might think that diplomacy is something which happens exclusively at embassies and at a Government level. But in fact, education diplomacy is part of our organisaton’s DNA. And through our alumni we have created an enormous international network of ambassadors for both a New Zealand education as well as everything else our country has to offer.
What do you do in your spare time? Can you tell us about the choir you sing in?
Yes! I’ve been in a local choir called the Doubtful Sounds since 2014. It’s wonderful. It’s complete “me time”. It’s away from work, it’s away from the family, it’s an escape from the normal preoccupations of life. I find it completely joyful.
I love making music with other people. We’re not too serious; it’s not an auditioned choir and reading music is not a pre-requisite. I love the fact there’s a whole range of people involved. Our choir master Bryan Crump (of RNZ fame) is a brilliant musician and arranger of music, and is very active in getting us in public. We sing at weddings, flash mobs in the street, the Fringe Festival, slots on RNZ. We sang last year in the Wright’s Hill gun implacement and at this year’s Newtown Fair.

A model for teaching innovation in higher education worldwide?
China is stepping up its drive to lure overseas talent to become an innovation economy. An example of this is Shanghai-based DeTao Masters Academy (DTMA), which recruits 500 experts (‘Masters’) from universities and industry around the globe to regularly visit China and share their knowledge and skills with Chinese students and professionals.

Children must be ready for jobs ‘that do not yet exist’
Many children will end up working in jobs that do not yet exist, said Minister-in-charge of Singapore's Smart Nation initiative Vivian Balakrishnan. “We need to go beyond just the formal school curriculum”, he said, adding that the ABCs needed in school must be advanced: A for aesthetics (technology), B for building (applying) technology, and C for communication, to bridge the gap between user and technologist.

Junior high students rip elementary English as ‘useless’
In a new survey, 82.6 percent of sixth-grade students believe an English education is useful, but that figure plunged to 53.9 percent after they entered junior high. Researcher Yumiko Fukumoto said the loss of interest is lack of confidence in ability: “In junior high schools, children don’t spend much time on speaking or writing and the program is mostly based on translating and memorizing.”

Why it is important for India’s education system to embrace disruption
Business, economy, politics and society are part of the same ecosystem. Educators therefore, have a duty to offer knowledge for enhancing skillsets and expertise that will help students face up to the challenges of the coming years. In this context, the higher education segment has a crucial role to play, but lack of qualified faculty, discipline, experiential learning and industry relevance is hindering students.
UNITED KINGDOM
Scrap fees for international students and use foreign aid budget to bring them to UK
The number of EU students applying to UK universities has fallen by 7 per cent since the Brexit vote. A professor of Economics at the University of Buckingham said the higher tuition fees is “extortionate” and should be scrapped altogether to encourage applicants. Instead, he said the Government should take money from the Department for International Development to recruit candidates and enable student mobility. Any leftover funding should be available to promote research collaborations anywhere in the world, he added.

Making New Zealand’s roads safer for students
The Visiting Drivers Project is aiming to do just that. The project is a collaboration between the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and its road safety partners, including the Automobile Association (AA), and rental vehicle operators and tourism operators across the country.
The focus for the project is the Otago, Southland and West Coast regions where visiting drivers make up a large proportion of traffic. On roads in these regions, safety improvements such as centre-line rumble strips, “keep left” arrows, “no-passing” markings and new signage have been installed. Road safety information has also been made more accessible and user-friendly, with resources available in different languages and formats, including interactive videos and apps.
Over summer, during the regions’ peak visitor season, an education campaign will be run to help visiting drivers understand and prepare for driving in New Zealand.
Jim Harland, NZTA’s Regional Director, Southern, says the strength of the project has been in the shared objective of ‘host responsibility’ and a partnership approach that ensures visitors are helped at every stage of their journey.
While the project is largely aimed at tourists, it will benefit all newcomers to New Zealand, including international students.
“We want all visitors who are driving on our roads, including students, to make good decisions based on correct information about travel times, speeds and conditions,” he said.
“It’s our responsibility as New Zealanders to help our visitors have a safe and enjoyable time.”
The Visiting Drivers Project initiatives also include the following, many of which are available in different languages.
- AA’s online Visiting Driver Training Programme, which includes video footage of New Zealand driving scenarios.
- Apps with road safety messaging such as CamperMate.
- Air New Zealand’s 'Driving in New Zealand' in-flight app (available on long-haul flights) and videos on all international flights about driving in New Zealand.
- A 'Driving in New Zealand' leaflet available from rental vehicle and other tourism operators, and can be downloaded here.
- Providing road safety information to successful applicants for student visas.
- Guidelines for accommodation providers to provide practical driving advice to their guests.
- A Rental Vehicle Operators’ Code of Practice.

New Zealand's growing presence in US study abroad
The Forum on Education Abroad
Held in Seattle, Washington, this year’s conference was an opportunity for New Zealand providers to meet with existing and potential partners in the US, and to participate in professional development sessions on standards in study abroad. The University of Auckland exhibited, and the University of Otago co-presented a session. Representatives from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, University of Canterbury and Victoria University of Wellington also attended as did ENZ’s US Director of Education, Amy Rutherford, and ENZ’s US Field Director, Alanna Dick.
The conference capped off at a luncheon plenary where Shanna Law, a former study abroad student, gave a talk about her year at the University of Otago. Shanna won the ‘Award for Academic Achievement Abroad’ for her research project on geology in Central Otago, which she presented to 1,000 conference attendees.The Forum on Education Abroad is accepting nominations for next year’s Award for Academic Achievement Abroad. The deadline is 30 August 2017. The next conference will be in March 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Institute of International Education Best Practices conference
Alanna Dick also represented ENZ at the Institute of International Education (IIE) Best Practices Conference, in Florida, in March. The event showcased the 2017 winners of the IIE Heiskell awards, which acknowledge international partnerships, internationalising campuses and study abroad.
Monash University and Macquarie University were the only non-US award recipients to present their programmes. Awardees were given 15-minute speaking slots at the event, while their institutions were recognised through IIE press releases, a cash prize and an awards ceremony.
As the awards are a great way to showcase the innovative practices on campuses, Alanna hopes to see New Zealand institutions involved in future.
“New Zealand institutions have several innovative initiatives that could fit the Heiskell award categories, including the unique ways they run international partnerships with US institutions to meet the needs of students.
“The awards are self-nominated, and it’s never too early to be thinking about next year’s award selection,” Alanna said.
IIE Heiskell Award applications are due in October 2017. Winners are notified in December, giving ample time to prepare for the conference in March.
Get involved with the IIE
IIE aims to double the number of US students studying abroad by 2020. New Zealand institutions can partner with the IIE by becoming a participating university in the Platform for Education in Emergencies Response programme or hosting a professor or researcher from the Scholarship Rescue Fund.

Universities New Zealand to strengthen ties with India
Stronger ties between New Zealand and India at the university level are a key outcome of the Prime Minister John Key’s visit to India currently underway.
Universities New Zealand (UNZ) has made two announcements: development of an engagement strategy to strengthen relationships with India and attract more university students to New Zealand; and a Strategic Education Partnership Agreement with the Maharashtra State Government.

Professor Harlene Hayne, Chair of Universities New Zealand and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago, says, “Currently, students from India make up five per cent of the 26,000 international students who are studying at a New Zealand university.
“We recognise there is significant potential to attract and welcome increasing numbers of university-level students from India.”
The strategy builds on an increasing university market presence in India, with student visas for first-time university students from India up 18 per cent through to August 2016. Professor Hayne says the UNZ India Strategy, which will be formally launched in early 2017, will see New Zealand’s universities working collectively to promote study in New Zealand, and to further develop and strengthen partnerships between institutions in India and New Zealand.
UNZ and ENZ are co-sponsoring the strategy. ENZ Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, says, “We are delighted to partner with our universities in India, and applaud their leadership in investing in the long-term future of this hugely important market.”
The Strategic Education Partnership Agreement with Maharashtra State Government provides a framework to explore academic opportunities between the two countries, added Professor Haynes.
Maharashtra State Government in Western India is the second most populous state in India with over 112 million inhabitants. Its capital, Mumbai, has a population of approximately 18 million. Maharashtra has 24 universities with a turnout of 160,000 graduates every year, while New Zealand has eight universities and 43,000 graduates each year.
“This strategic agreement offers us an avenue to build institutional engagement between our universities, through faculty relationships and exchanges, research and innovation collaboration, and information sharing.”

Asia comes to Marsden School
With funding from the Asia New Zealand Foundation, Marsden Head of Humanities, Fiona Crawford, organised a full day of activities for students, with the aim to increase their cultural awareness and educate them on a region with increasing ties to New Zealand.
"We want our students to thrive and contribute towards putting New Zealand on the map, so it is our responsibility to equip them for their future relationships with Asia," Crawford said.

The day included a range of activities and sessions that represented 11 Asian countries, starting off with a Tai Chi session in the gym, and ending with an inter-house KPop (Korean Pop) dance competition. In between, students broke into groups to take part in Judo, Kung Fu and Bollywood dance classes, sushi, dumpling and curry making, language learning and haiku writing, as well as origami, henna painting, sari dressing, lantern making, calligraphy, kite making – and much more.
“The students really enjoyed themselves, but also gained valuable insights into the many Asian cultures on show. Many commented on how fun it was, and hope to do it again next year,” Crawford said.
Amanda Cundy, a former Marsden student who went on the school’s first exchange to China back in 2010, stopped by Asia Day to share her experience with students. She spoke about the impact that Chinese studies had on her life, and the importance of understanding other cultures in an increasingly globalised world.

Japanese agriculture students visit Southland
The students, known as Chikujyo (“ari-girls” in Japanese)came from agricultural high schools across Japan to spend 12 days in Southland at Southland Girls' High School, which offered ESOL classes and technical training in farming. Alongside this, the students visited Fonterra Edendale, Blue River Dairy, Southern Dairy Hub research farm and other dairy farms with women in leadership roles. The Southern Institute of Technology also assisted with some activities.
Misa Kitaoka, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan said the programme generated significant media coverage in Japan and is a great example of industry and institutions collaborating to deliver a programme that highlights New Zealand’s unique education offerings and expertise.
“Students were impressed by the efficiency and productivity of agriculture practices in New Zealand, and the support for women in farming. They left feeling that farming in New Zealand allows a good work life balance,” said Misa.
“I am so inspired by the girls who are using what they learned in New Zealand to promote a new image of working in agriculture that’s more accessible for new entrants, especially females.”
The programme was developed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ New Entrant’s and Women’s Division, in consultation with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Primary Industries and ENZ. It was administered by the Japan Agricultural Exchange Council and was funded by the Japan Racing Association.

Bringing Sunshine to a Beijing winter
The series was launched in Beijing on 3 November at a National Symposium on EFL Reading in Schools.
Some 900 teachers from across China attended the two-day symposium, which included a demonstration English class using the books.
Judy Stevenson, Educational Manager of Wendy Pye Publishing, and Adele Bryant, ENZ’s Regional Director for China & North Asia also attended, and were pleased by the response to the series.
“The teachers were very positive about using the books in their classrooms and could see that the emphasis on creative language would be more engaging for their students,” said Judy.

“Students are encouraged to use their imaginations and have fun with language in a way which is new for Chinese education.”
Adele said ENZ had supported Wendy Pye Publishing to pursue these export opportunities through an export growth programme, administered by the Publishers Association of New Zealand.
“Breaking into the huge educational publishing market of China is a milestone for a New Zealand publisher and comes after many years of commitment by Dame Wendy Pye and her team to developing the relationship with FLTRP,” said Adele.
The collaboration will see the Sunshine readers’ and teachers’ notes marketed to junior high schools throughout China.
