  • BizVenture winners tackle youth mental health with "It's Okay" clothing range

    The innovative business entrepreneurship scheme is a pilot initiative led by Education New Zealand, Young Enterprise Scheme (YES), and Japanese partners to give students in both countries real-life experience in developing business solutions that address one of the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

    Forty students collaborated in a three-day virtual exchange, where they chose a challenge tackling some of Japan’s pressing social issues, before designing and presenting a business plan in a “Dragon’s Den” style pitch to judges.

    The winning New Zealand team - Hamish Robinson (Taradale High School, Napier), Benjamin Young (Tauranga Boys’ College), Daniel Blight (Waimea College, Napier), Kaiah Sherriff (Southland Girls’ High School), and Abirami Kabilan (Pakuranga College, Auckland) - chose to come up with a strategy which would directly enhance the mental wellbeing of Japanese teenagers.

    It is a topic which directly impacts young people in both countries, as UNICEF ranks Japan 37th among 41 OECD countries for the state of children’s mental health, and New Zealand one lower, at 38th place.

    Insights into business and culture “eye-opening”

    To succeed, the students had to gain a thorough insight into Japanese culture, youth behaviour, and business practice. Ahead of their pitches, the teams joined interactive workshops with New Zealand and Japanese guest speakers, cultural mentors, and language coaches.

    Abirami Kabilan describes the exposure to Japanese business and societal culture as “eye-opening”.

    “The UN SDGs are some of the biggest problems facing humanity today, so working on them was a pretty full-on task.”

    “One of the most interesting things about this cross-cultural experience was seeing how the Japanese students approached the same problems. Young people around the world will have such different ways of approaching these problems too. Imagine the ideas we would come up with if we all worked together.”

    The winning team successfully pitched a clothing brand called 大丈夫, which translates in English to “It’s Okay”, to get the conversation about mental health out in the open among Japanese youth, and hopefully gain the support of high-reach Japanese influencers to help push their critical wellbeing message.

    They decided the best way to break into the Japanese market would be with “in your face” messaging using symbols of strength, such as dragons and samurai, to promote their message.

    “This is something that has not been done in Japan before and we’re ecstatic to be winners,” Hamish Robinson says.

    BizVenture promotes global competency

    The BizVenture programme will allow students to understand the Japanese business context and increase their global competency, says Young Enterprise Scheme lead Elizabeth Pittman.

    “New Zealand youth have such a strong interest in sustainability and improving social outcomes within their communities and abroad, and this challenge allows them to explore that interest in a business context.” 

    International education adapts to changing needs of learners

    Education New Zealand is keen to build on the success of this year’s pilot BizVenture programme as international education adapts to meet the changing needs of learners. International research shows that students are increasingly seeking programmes and content that is relevant to real world problems and which will allow them to make a real difference.

    The programme also builds on New Zealand’s diplomatic relationship with Japan while travel for international students remains limited.

    “Over many decades Japan and New Zealand have benefitted from an enduring partnership,” says Hamish Cooper, New Zealand Ambassador to Japan. “Education has played a really important role in fostering people-to-people ties, and supporting the development of what are now, in 2021, very close connections between our two countries.”

    “Before the pandemic, more than 10,000 students from Japan studied in New Zealand every year, making an important economic contribution, but also enriching our schools and communities, and helping New Zealand students become more globally connected.”

  • NZIEC 2016: Celebrating 25 years of coming together

    With a record 650 delegates marking the occasion, including 90 speakers, six plenary and keynote sessions, and 44 breakout sessions, there was a lot going on.

    In her Q&A with conference MC Miriama Kamo, Professor Stephanie Fahey, Lead Partner for Oceania at Ernst & Young, provided a range of insights on the future of the international education industry

    Our conference dinner hit a high point as we celebrated 25 years of networking and collaboration. Cultural icon Elena wowed delegates with her personal story, which spoke to the importance of developing international connections firmly grounded in one’s culture.

    On Day two, Jim Moser, Chief Executive of Clemenger BBDO New Zealand, provided insights into the future of marketing. Dopamine and oxytocin have never been mentioned more at a NZIEC than after his entertaining and insightful address!

    Friday rounded off with David Bell from ASB Bank outlining how their organisation has used technology to continue innovating to stay one step ahead – including the development of the new Clever Kash cashless money box.

    Feedback for the conference has been positive, with 94 per cent of attendees rating the conference good to excellent. Furthermore, some 83 per cent of delegates agreed or strongly agreed that NZIEC added value to their organisation.

    Towards NZIEC 2017

  • New Zealand experience grows global indigenous network

    A special bond forged through a Study Abroad programme, involving Vermont’s Champlain College and Auckland University of Technology (AUT), was marked by the gifting of a unique pare whakairo (carved doorway mantel) to the US College in September.

    Called Te Hononga (The Convergence), the pare whakairo was created by kaiwhakairo (Māori carver) Pahi O’Carroll over four weeks in residence on the Champlain campus. 

    The pare is unlike any other. It is carved from a wood native to the area – black walnut – and evokes values, beliefs and traditions common to both Māori and the indigenous people of Vermont, the Abenaki.

    The relationship between Champlain and AUT dates back five years, when New Zealand Honorary Consul and trustee of Champlain College, Dr George Burrill, first established a study abroad exchange programme between the two institutions. To date, over 100 students have participated.

    One of the highlights of American students’ time at AUT is the Noho Marae programme.

    “Every year students tell us how the Noho Marae programme has profoundly impacted them,” ENZ General Manager – International, Lisa Futschek, says. “It turns them into lifelong advocates for New Zealand, its education system and Māori culture.”

    Run by AUT Senior Lecturer in Māori and Indigenous Development, Jason King, the mini-course includes basic Te Reo Māori, Māori mythology, waiata (songs) and cultural customs. It includes with a noho marae (weekend-long marae experience). 

    King describes the course as “the base of a tree, from which branches and leaves grow”. 

    “The course puts indigenous goggles on students,” he says. “It opens them up to areas of discussion with their own indigenous people.

    “My ultimate aim is to connect us not only globally, but indigenously.”

    Thanks to their connection to Māori via AUT and the Noho Marae programme, Champlain College made a formal connection to their own indigenous people, the Abenaki tribe. A representative from the Abenaki was present at the unveiling of Te Hononga. 

    Many US students choose to keep in touch after they return home through the student-led Whānau Councils. These were first established in 2010 after students from Europe were so moved by their AUT marae experience that they set up their own group to maintain their connection to New Zealand and each other. There are now three Whānau Councils across Europe and the US actively supported by AUT.

    For the European council’s 10-year anniversary, members of group are planning to return to New Zealand – this time with their partners and children.

    “We tell them during the Noho Marae, after studying in New Zealand you are whānau for life,” King says.

  • Making New Zealand’s roads safer for students

    The Visiting Drivers Project is aiming to do just that. The project is a collaboration between the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and its road safety partners, including the Automobile Association (AA), and rental vehicle operators and tourism operators across the country.

    The focus for the project is the Otago, Southland and West Coast regions where visiting drivers make up a large proportion of traffic. On roads in these regions, safety improvements such as centre-line rumble strips, “keep left” arrows, “no-passing” markings and new signage have been installed. Road safety information has also been made more accessible and user-friendly, with resources available in different languages and formats, including interactive videos and apps.

    Over summer, during the regions’ peak visitor season, an education campaign will be run to help visiting drivers understand and prepare for driving in New Zealand.

    Jim Harland, NZTA’s Regional Director, Southern, says the strength of the project has been in the shared objective of ‘host responsibility’ and a partnership approach that ensures visitors are helped at every stage of their journey.

    While the project is largely aimed at tourists, it will benefit all newcomers to New Zealand, including international students.

    “We want all visitors who are driving on our roads, including students, to make good decisions based on correct information about travel times, speeds and conditions,” he said.

    “It’s our responsibility as New Zealanders to help our visitors have a safe and enjoyable time.”

    The Visiting Drivers Project initiatives also include the following, many of which are available in different languages.

    • AA’s online Visiting Driver Training Programme, which includes video footage of New Zealand driving scenarios.
    • Apps with road safety messaging such as CamperMate.
    • Air New Zealand’s 'Driving in New Zealand' in-flight app (available on long-haul flights) and videos on all international flights about driving in New Zealand.
    • A 'Driving in New Zealand' leaflet available from rental vehicle and other tourism operators, and can be downloaded here.
    • Providing road safety information to successful applicants for student visas.
    • Guidelines for accommodation providers to provide practical driving advice to their guests.
    • A Rental Vehicle Operators’ Code of Practice.

  • Universities New Zealand to strengthen ties with India

    Stronger ties between New Zealand and India at the university level are a key outcome of the Prime Minister John Key’s visit to India currently underway.

    Universities New Zealand (UNZ) has made two announcements: development of an engagement strategy to strengthen relationships with India and attract more university students to New Zealand; and a Strategic Education Partnership Agreement with the Maharashtra State Government.

    Professor Harlene Hayne, Chair of Universities New Zealand and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago, says, “Currently, students from India make up five per cent of the 26,000 international students who are studying at a New Zealand university. 

    “We recognise there is significant potential to attract and welcome increasing numbers of university-level students from India.”

    The strategy builds on an increasing university market presence in India, with student visas for first-time university students from India up 18 per cent through to August 2016. Professor Hayne says the UNZ India Strategy, which will be formally launched in early 2017, will see New Zealand’s universities working collectively to promote study in New Zealand, and to further develop and strengthen partnerships between institutions in India and New Zealand.

    UNZ and ENZ are co-sponsoring the strategy. ENZ Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, says, “We are delighted to partner with our universities in India, and applaud their leadership in investing in the long-term future of this hugely important market.”

    The Strategic Education Partnership Agreement with Maharashtra State Government provides a framework to explore academic opportunities between the two countries, added Professor Haynes.

    Maharashtra State Government in Western India is the second most populous state in India with over 112 million inhabitants. Its capital, Mumbai, has a population of approximately 18 million. Maharashtra has 24 universities with a turnout of 160,000 graduates every year, while New Zealand has eight universities and 43,000 graduates each year.

     “This strategic agreement offers us an avenue to build institutional engagement between our universities, through faculty relationships and exchanges, research and innovation collaboration, and information sharing.”

  • Asia comes to Marsden School

    With funding from the Asia New Zealand Foundation, Marsden Head of Humanities, Fiona Crawford, organised a full day of activities for students, with the aim to increase their cultural awareness and educate them on a region with increasing ties to New Zealand.

    "We want our students to thrive and contribute towards putting New Zealand on the map, so it is our responsibility to equip them for their future relationships with Asia," Crawford said.

    The day included a range of activities and sessions that represented 11 Asian countries, starting off with a Tai Chi session in the gym, and ending with an inter-house KPop (Korean Pop) dance competition. In between, students broke into groups to take part in Judo, Kung Fu and Bollywood dance classes, sushi, dumpling and curry making, language learning and haiku writing, as well as origami, henna painting, sari dressing, lantern making, calligraphy, kite making – and much more.

    “The students really enjoyed themselves, but also gained valuable insights into the many Asian cultures on show. Many commented on how fun it was, and hope to do it again next year,” Crawford said.

    Amanda Cundy, a former Marsden student who went on the school’s first exchange to China back in 2010, stopped by Asia Day to share her experience with students. She spoke about the impact that Chinese studies had on her life, and the importance of understanding other cultures in an increasingly globalised world.

  • International students affected by bank changes

    As a result of the Global Tax Information Reporting and Anti Money Laundering campaign, all banks in New Zealand, as well as other financial institutions, are required by law to collect additional information from a foreign tax resident before they can open an account in New Zealand. As part of these changes, banks also require a certified copy of (or, in some cases, the original) the student’s passport (bio-page) and proof of current residential address. Those who apply to open a bank account while outside New Zealand will be required to provide proof of their current overseas residential address, and to present themselves at the bank to activate the account when they arrive in New Zealand.

    The same changes are being implemented in other countries that are part of this global initiative.

    These changes also apply to international students who intend to use INZ’s Funds Transfer Scheme (FTS) to transfer their funds to New Zealand. Note the FTS is only available to international students from certain countries.

    FTS information

    If applying for an account under the FTS in the near future, ANZ, the New Zealand bank that operates the FTS, may contact the student to complete additional forms to ensure they capture the additional information they require. These forms include questions around the student's tax information, and the student themselves will need to complete and sign these forms (not their agent).

    For FTS accounts only, acceptable proof of residential address includes:

    • utility bill (e.g. landline telephone and power only)
    • rates bill (e.g. property tax document)
    • tax certificate
    • insurance policy document

    The document(s) listed above must be less than three months old and must state the student's name and their residential address. Where the student is living with their parents and the document states their parents' name(s), a parent whose name appears on the document must provide a letter stating that the student lives with them.

    Note there may be some delays visa application processing while Immigration New Zealand and ANZ work through these changes.

    Brazil is replacing the Sciences without Borders (CSF) initiative with a new international mobility financing regime, aiming to enhance bilateral relationships with overseas partners. The new fund will be targeted towards postgraduate students and early career researchers looking to develop research abroad. While the CSF was managed at a federal level, the new scheme gives more autonomy to universities, requiring them to form an internationalisation strategy with international partners.

    74% of public value international students when economic worth revealed

    New research has found that people’s attitudes towards international students change when learning of their economic contribution and the jobs they generate. In a recent survey, only 12% of respondents wanted to see more international students in the country, but this doubled to 24% when they learned of the economic gains. Similarly, the 20% who wanted to see less international students in the country dropped to 13% when told of the economic value of international students.

    South Korean teens top in maths and science, but lack interest

    South Korean students are excelling in science and mathematics, but the way the subjects are taught is not kindling interest in the students, a new report reveals. While South Korea placed fifth worldwide in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 science test, and first for maths, they ranked 26th and 28th (out of 35) in terms of interest. Professor Lee Joo-ho of the Korea Development Institute (KDI) says the disparity can be traced to the “learning by rote” method in the nation’s schools.

  • Indian and Kiwi students explore water issues

    The Untouched World Foundation’s (UWF) Waterwise Leadership and Global Citizenship Programme gave students the opportunity to learn about the entirety of the water resource chain - from primary energy players, through to farming, recreation, cultural and conservation interests.

    Taking part were students and teachers from Otago secondary schools, tertiary institutions and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP). Representatives from YESPeace Youth Network in Asia also attended.

    The programme involved a week of activities which included visits to lakes, rivers, vineyards and orchards, discussions with water and land use and tourism and irrigation experts, and interviews with locals.

    “Youth leadership is firstly about agency – understanding the many facets of the issue, developing the transferable skills to collaborate with others, acting responsibly and then finding a clear path to actively and positively model their own views and behaviour. It is vital we all listen and engage with an international perspective on these issues,” says Mark Prain, Executive Director of UWF. 

    Key partners included Otago Regional Council, Otago Community Trust and Contact Energy. Further support was also provided by ENZ, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Ngai Tahu.

    “Otago Polytechnic believes educating youth on key issues facing society, unlocking their unique leadership potential and inspiring them to become active change-makers is vital,” said Marc Doesburg, Otago Polytechnic Director Globalisation.

    Last week’s activities are just part of a range of ongoing initiatives.  An “Acts of Kindness’” Campaign is also being developed and will involve MGIEP and UWF mobilising youth in partner institutions to foster meaningful exchange of ideas, knowledge and action towards the achievement of UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals.

    Organisers are aiming to establish a New Zealand-India youth leadership exchange programme with a focus on fostering youth leadership, which is a key aspect of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Global Action Programme.

  • Registrations open: NZ Vocational Education and Training Research Forum

    The NZ Vocational Education and Training Research Forum (NZVETRF) is a multi-sector opportunity for discussing ‘what works’ in vocational education. In 2020, the forum will be delivered fully online, including international keynotes, and a curated programme of breakout sessions, along with interest based ‘hangouts’ and expert sessions.

    The new partnership with Skills International extends the reach of the forum to an international network, to learn from and contribute to global developments in VET to support the COVID-19 recovery efforts.

    CEO of The Skills Organisation, Garry Fissenden, says vocational education and training will be a critical component of the response to the employment, economic, and social shocks caused by COVID-19 around the world. He says:

    “With New Zealand’s vocational education sector embarking on a major reform, now more than ever is a time to come together to share evidence and capability of how vocational education and training can support skills and productivity, and wider wellbeing.”
