NZ Education Fair in Bangkok sets record for provider attendance
‘Tis the Season for international education events in Thailand and the increasing numbers of providers and agents is testament to the popularity of New Zealand as a study destination amongst Thai students. The series of events held from 30 August to 2 September included an agent seminar, the Bangkok Education Fair and then mini fairs held in Chiang Mai and Chonburi.
The agent seminar was attended by 108 education agents from 79 companies, including a significant number of new agents. Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao’s (ENZ) Thailand Team delivered a presentation that covered insights into New Zealand’s brand health as a study destination and the current landscape of the Thai student market. Updates were well received, with feedback indicating that the majority of attendees were either satisfied or extremely satisfied with the content and the networking opportunities provided. This positive response underscores the value of agent engagement in Thailand.

The Bangkok Education Fair, held on 31 August, saw the largest number of education providers in attendance in ENZ’s history. ENZ’s Market Manager for Thailand, Chortip Pramoolpol said that there were 79 representatives from 60 institutions, including all eight New Zealand universities, 44 schools, vocational institutions, private training establishments, and English language providers.
“The fair attracted 1,460 visitors, offering students and parents an excellent opportunity to connect directly with education providers.
“Prospective students and their families engaged in one-on-one discussions about New Zealand’s academic programs, student life, and pathways to success. The event garnered positive feedback, with 84% of surveyed sector representatives reporting satisfaction or extreme satisfaction with the fair,” said Chortip.

At the opening ceremony, New Zealand Ambassador Jonathan Kings presented the Alumni Hall of Fame Awards. These annual awards honour alumni who have achieved notable professional success, gained significant social recognition, and positively contributed to promoting New Zealand as a premier study destination.

ENZ also organised a special seminar featuring three distinguished guests. Purachai Piumsomboon, the former Interior Minister of Thailand, spoke about his experience sending all three of his children to study in New Zealand from primary school through university. Additionally, Peterpan and Lilly Nichapalak, two influential figures with nearly one million followers, shared their personal stories about how studying at New Zealand high schools positively transformed their lives.
In the lead-up to the Bangkok fair, ENZ organised a series of events aimed at expanding outreach to Thai students. From August 27 to 29, ENZ conducted a school roadshow across six schools in Chonburi, delivering information sessions about studying in New Zealand. A notable highlight of the roadshow was a simulated classroom experience hosted by a New Zealand school, allowing Thai students to get a taste of the New Zealand education system firsthand.

Following the main fair, a mini fair was held on 1 September in Chiang Mai and Chonburi offering another chance for prospective students and parents to interact with New Zealand education providers. The event series concluded with a final visit to two more schools on September 2, also in Chonburi and Chiang Mai. These additional events emphasised ENZ’s commitment to engaging with students beyond the main fair, fostering strong ties with schools, agents, and prospective students in the surrounding Bangkok region.

Events season wraps up in the Philippines
Ben Burrowes, ENZ’s Regional Communications & Strategic Relations Manager for South East Asia, said the events were a fantastic way to sign off on a successful year in the Philippines.
“The market has not been without its challenges in 2017 but we’ve made some great progress in shifting perceptions away from a migration focus on New Zealand to promoting our world-class offering for high-value students,” said Ben.
“Much of that has been achieved through building networks with local and international schools. Our latest series of school roadshows, in which we were joined by a number of New Zealand providers, built some strong partnerships particularly as we look to recruit the new K-12 Filipino graduates into our tertiary system.”
ENZ also co-funded three successful agent-led fairs with Golden Summit Immigration Consultancy (Cebu), IDP (Manila) and Fortrust Education Services (Manila) with more than 25 providers attending. The feedback from all providers was very positive and the events were well attended – particularly the Fortrust fair, which attracted more than 2,200 visitors.

Close to 100 local guidance counsellors and career advisors attended a training session hosted by Unitec, which included a soft-sell presentation on New Zealand’s world-class education offering.
“This growing network of local counsellors and career advisors is proving valuable, as they have a strong influence on prospective students,” said Ben.
“We’ll continue to work with them closely as we focus on recruiting a greater number of Filipino students into our undergraduate programmes.”
ENZ also generated some great media coverage, a highlight being an NZ Inc. media roundtable in Cebu which included David Strachan (the New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines), Hernando Banal (New Zealand Trade Commissioner), Steven Dixon (Tourism New Zealand’s Regional Director), Catherine Albiston (Immigration Advisors Authority) and ENZ’s own John Laxon, Regional Director – South, South East Asia & the Middle East.

Bringing Sunshine to a Beijing winter
The series was launched in Beijing on 3 November at a National Symposium on EFL Reading in Schools.
Some 900 teachers from across China attended the two-day symposium, which included a demonstration English class using the books.
Judy Stevenson, Educational Manager of Wendy Pye Publishing, and Adele Bryant, ENZ’s Regional Director for China & North Asia also attended, and were pleased by the response to the series.
“The teachers were very positive about using the books in their classrooms and could see that the emphasis on creative language would be more engaging for their students,” said Judy.

Adele said ENZ had supported Wendy Pye Publishing to pursue these export opportunities through an export growth programme, administered by the Publishers Association of New Zealand.
“Breaking into the huge educational publishing market of China is a milestone for a New Zealand publisher and comes after many years of commitment by Dame Wendy Pye and her team to developing the relationship with FLTRP,” said Adele.
The collaboration will see the Sunshine readers’ and teachers’ notes marketed to junior high schools throughout China.

Meet the Dream New scholarship recipients
ENZ received nearly 300 applications from across 20 EU countries. Candidates were chosen based on their fantastic academic results as well as creative motivational essays or videos.
The winners begin their New Zealand adventure in February or July 2018, and as official ‘Kiwi Ambassadors’ will keep us updated throughout their time in New Zealand.
Lisa Futschek, ENZ Regional Director – Americas and Europe said the 10 recipients reflect the growing number of high-quality European students that look to New Zealand for a unique study abroad experience.
“European students immerse themselves into the Kiwi lifestyle very easily. They value the wide range of programmes our education providers offer and the accessibility of our professors and tutors – in their home countries, this relationship tends to be much more formal,” said Lisa.
“They are also quite adventurous, and in their free time they will use every opportunity to explore the beautiful New Zealand landscape and engage in outdoor pursuits they have heard so much about.”
The scholarship was launched in December 2015 by Prime Minister John Key as part of the FTA campaigning in Europe. The scholarship offers EU students one study abroad semester in New Zealand (valued at up to $12,500 NZD), sending students to New Zealand universities and ITPs.

Keynote speakers inspire at NZIEC
That was the theme of the 27th New Zealand International Education Conference, held in Wellington on 9-10 August.
Three keynote speakers gave inspirational addresses to packed audiences at Te Papa.
Making a global impact
Yoseph Ayele, chief executive of the Edmund Hillary Foundation, kickstarted the conference by exploring how to make a global impact from New Zealand.

He gave four practical tips for bringing global citizenship into international education:
1. Create experiences, rather than content.
2. Learn to learn. Create an environment where everyone in your organisation is able to see themselves from other people’s perspectives.
3. Teach your values. Rather than focusing on practical skills, teach students key values such as manaakitanga or innovation.
4. Invest in diversity. Think about attracting students who may not be able to afford to study here, but who would greatly benefit from a New Zealand education and would want to give back.
Understanding online behaviour
Dr Shanton Chang, from the University of Melbourne, shared his knowledge of the online behaviour of students moving between countries.

His insights included:
- Providing the right information at the right time to students is crucial.
- Digital literacy is patchy and often limited to Google searches – even for ‘digital natives’. Don’t assume students will find the information you put online.
- The layout and visual cues of websites often vary between cultures. Even downloading lecture notes can be a struggle for international students. If you want them to use your website, show them how.
- Most of us have 7-10 websites we visit frequently. International students may continue to visit their favourite sites from home more than any other sites, particularly if they’re feeling isolated.
“Put it online and they will come? That is nonsense,” says Dr Chung. “We need to unpack that myth and engage properly.”
Developing partnerships
Anna Curzon, chief partner officer at cloud accounting software company Xero, gave advice on developing partnerships to become more globally successful.

She challenged the audience to ask themselves five important questions:
- What is your purpose?
- What are you awesome at?
- What are the experiences in your value chain that will achieve your purpose?
- Do you need to build, buy or partner?
- If you need to partner, do you have the right people and culture to grow the relationship?
In his address to the conference, Education Minister Hon Chris Hipkins described global citizens as people who can “study, work and live across cultural and national boundaries”.
For those of us educating the next generation of global citizens, the three areas covered by the key speakers are important elements to consider as we continue to connect New Zealand to the world.

Education features at Mayoral Forum
Held at Te Papa in Wellington, the forum comprised business seminars, “matching” sessions and presentations from notable authorities including Sir Richard Taylor – all interwoven with banquets, cultural performances and a welcoming powhiri.
Ten Mayors and Vice Mayors from China and 38 New Zealand Mayors attended.
Charles Finny, Chair of the ENZ Board and moderator of the Education Exchanges, said the forum was a great way to put key insights in front of New Zealand regions seeking partnerships with China.
“This forum is now a well-established part of our New Zealand – Chinese partnership and provides a useful platform for regions to advance their education objectives in China,” he said.
“Chinese Mayors hold overall responsibility for education in their regions, so the forum was an opportunity to connect them with New Zealand regions, and to show them the strength and consistency across New Zealand’s education system.”
Education featured on both days of the forum. This included an ENZ-led breakout session for some 50 delegates, during which panellists Jason Cushen (University of Otago), Michael O’Shaughnessy (Massey University), Jan Fitz-Gerald (Institute of Global Engagement) and Dan Milward (Gamefroot) spoke about innovation in New Zealand education before an engaging Q&A session with the audience.
In addition, a number of New Zealand and Chinese Mayors and Vice Mayors engaged in formal exchanges, with New Zealand Mayors presenting on education partnerships, sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurialism in their respective regions.
Ross Fisher, ENZ’s International Market Manager – China, said the variety of presentations was impressive.
“The presentations provided a fascinating cross-section of the specific initiatives New Zealand regions were championing to prove New Zealand’s standing as a high-quality education provider,” he said.
“Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese stood out for her particularly insightful articulation of how her region offers ‘holistic education’ opportunities that fuse sustainability with innovation, science and technology, and investment.”
In turn, Chinese Mayoral representatives presented on their cities’ respective education priorities.
- Chen Zhiying, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, highlighted his city’s interest in student exchange, sister-school relationships and vocational education.
- Gao Zimin, Vice Mayor of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, spoke to the city’s priorities for cooperation in higher education, bio and marine science, sister schools, vocational education and opportunities focused specifically on urban development.
- Pei Weidong, Mayor of the Municipal Government of Liaoyang City, emphasised Liaoyang’s interest in vocational education, adding that a specific area of interest is modern agricultural education cooperation.
After a busy two days of bilateral exchanges, a closing banquet at Shed 6 on the Wellington waterfront showcased the capital city.
The forum was organised by Local Government New Zealand in collaboration with the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

March update from Immigration New Zealand
Update on Student visa processing*
Since New Zealand’s international borders reopened in August 2022, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has received 29,228 student visa applications from international students outside of New Zealand. We have completed 24,549 of these applications.

Impact of Cyclone Gabrielle on international students
We are aware that some education providers' campuses have been damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle and have been forced to close temporarily.
This affects students’ immigration status because their current student visa requires them to attend the place of study specified on the visa which may not be currently possible. We understand that this is a difficult time, and we would like to help. An information sheet has been developed for affected international students and can be found here.
Approval in Principle timeframe
We have shortened the standard length of time we allow most offshore students to provide a tuition fee receipt (or other financial evidence) from ten to five working days to encourage students to complete the final steps of their student visa application quickly. We understand that some students may not be able to provide evidence in the timeframe they are given due to their individual circumstances. Extensions to this timeframe are available – the student or agent just needs to upload a brief letter explaining how much longer they will require and why.
Tuition fees
We would like to remind you that changes to the requirements for tuition fee payment evidence for students were introduced last year as part of the Immigration Rebalance.
Students need to pay tuition fees for the first year, or first programme of study (whichever is the shorter), and they will have to prove personal/maintenance funds for the same period. We do not accept payment of tuition fees by instalment; the only exception is for some aviation students.
Agent declaration
If you are providing advice or assistance with a student visa application - DECLARE yourself in the application. Education agents outside New Zealand are permitted to give immigration advice on student visas but must declare themselves in the application. We are seeing increasing numbers of agents not declaring themselves and these applications may take longer to process as a result.
INZ is intending to resume reporting on agent visa approval rates later this year, probably in September/October. If you are not declaring your involvement in an application, this will have an impact on your publicly available performance information. Education providers in New Zealand will be encouraged to check the agent performance report.
