  • ENZ strengthens role in Indonesia

    Desiree Lee has been appointed as ENZ Market Manager responsible for Indonesia, in addition to Malaysia and the Philippines. 

    Naluri Bella Watti has been appointed to the position of ENZ Programme Manager, Indonesia, and will begin with ENZ in the Jakarta office from Monday 17 June. Naluri will be responsible for developing and delivering ENZ’s in-market activities, having formerly worked in a marketing strategy role for British Council Indonesia.

    ENZ’s Regional Manager East Asia, Ben Burrowes, said these appointments align with ENZ’s strategic direction to bolster in-market representation for ENZ’s priority markets, with at least two representatives now covering the South East Asian markets.

    “Indonesia remains an important market for ENZ with a wide range of business opportunities across the country. We’re very pleased to now have additional senior resourcing and with a busy activity calendar ahead, we look forward to working alongside our institution partners to deliver the right results.”

    The annual ENZ Fair is the next large event on ENZ’s Indonesia activity calendar and will be held in Jakarta on Sunday 28 July. An agent seminar will also be held the following day on Monday 29 July.

  • ITENZ International Education Forum 18 May

    As part of Education New Zealand’s Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) objective to give attendees a better understanding of ENZ’s direction of travel for the coming year, Geoff Bilbrough, General Manager Marketing and Communications presented at the forum. He gave a high-level view of ENZ’s marketing plans for the coming year including marketing and branding insights from recent research. ENZ’s Global Citizens Manager, Tyler Te Kiri, delivered a presentation on the Prime Minister’s Scholarship to Asia and Latin America scheme, what opportunities are available to the PTE sector and how PTE students can take part. The forum also included a speed meeting session with Auckland based ENZRA agents.  

    ENZ’s General Manager of Sector Engagement, Wendy Kerr said that it was important that we support the sector in a way that grows inbound students’ mobility for Aotearoa New Zealand in the next 12 months. 

    “Initiatives like the ITENZ International Forum encourage a collective approach to promote New Zealand education internationally. Since borders reopened in August 2022, all sub sectors have experienced a return of student visa holders. We look forward to working closely with the sub sectors to continue this upward trajectory,” added Wendy.  

     

  • March update from Immigration New Zealand 

    Update on Student visa processing*   

    Since New Zealand’s international borders reopened in August 2022, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has received 29,228 student visa applications from international students outside of New Zealand. We have completed 24,549 of these applications.

    Impact of Cyclone Gabrielle on international students 

    We are aware that some education providers' campuses have been damaged by Cyclone Gabrielle and have been forced to close temporarily. 

    This affects students’ immigration status because their current student visa requires them to attend the place of study specified on the visa which may not be currently possible. We understand that this is a difficult time, and we would like to help. An information sheet has been developed for affected international students and can be found here. 

    Approval in Principle timeframe 

    We have shortened the standard length of time we allow most offshore students to provide a tuition fee receipt (or other financial evidence) from ten to five working days to encourage students to complete the final steps of their student visa application quickly. We understand that some students may not be able to provide evidence in the timeframe they are given due to their individual circumstances. Extensions to this timeframe are available – the student or agent just needs to upload a brief letter explaining how much longer they will require and why. 

    Tuition fees 

    We would like to remind you that changes to the requirements for tuition fee payment evidence for students were introduced last year as part of the Immigration Rebalance.  

    Students need to pay tuition fees for the first year, or first programme of study (whichever is the shorter), and they will have to prove personal/maintenance funds for the same period. We do not accept payment of tuition fees by instalment; the only exception is for some aviation students. 

    Agent declaration 

    If you are providing advice or assistance with a student visa application - DECLARE yourself in the application. Education agents outside New Zealand are permitted to give immigration advice on student visas but must declare themselves in the application. We are seeing increasing numbers of agents not declaring themselves and these applications may take longer to process as a result.  

    INZ is intending to resume reporting on agent visa approval rates later this year, probably in September/October. If you are not declaring your involvement in an application, this will have an impact on your publicly available performance information. Education providers in New Zealand will be encouraged to check the agent performance report.

  • Exploring indigenous exchange programmes and internships

    The students, from University of Auckland and AUT, are part of the British Columbia & New Zealand Indigenous Student Mobility Project,a two-year programme that aims to provide reciprocal, short-term learning abroad and professional development and networking opportunities for indigenous students. The students will be joined by five First Nations students from Victoria University (UVic) in Canada, who are also part of the programme.

    Next year the Kiwi students will travel to Vancouver and be hosted by UVic for the 2020 GIC. UVic is a leader in the Canadian Co-Op model, where an internship is a required component of the university degree. 

    “Increasing access to international learning opportunities for all students, and in particular our Māori and Pasifika students, is an important goal for the University of Auckland,” says Brett Berquist, University of Auckland’s Director International.

    “Community and family are key to this strategy, and the chance to share and learn from First Nations students and academics at UVic is a great opportunity for our students.”

    The Student Mobility Project aims to engage indigenous students in immersive experiences that help them to establish and maintain relationships with other indigenous students and communities, industry, academics, and higher education professionals. It intends to provide a forum for indigenous students to present their perspectives and experiences, facilitating an exchange of ideas and networks.

    At the GIC, the students will share their perspectives and experiences on how international experiences benefit indigenous communities, how to best connect indigenous communities internationally, and how work placements and co-operative education have influenced their lives and careers.

    Karima Ramji, UVic’s Manager of International Programmes will also discuss critical success factors in developing indigenous international work-integrated learning exchange programmes.

    The GIC will feature further perspectives on global internships via a panel of University of Auckland Māori and Pasifika awardees of the Prime Minister’s Scholarships funded internships in Asia and Latin America.

    • Lian-Hong Brebner (New Zealand) – Diversity Manager at Auckland University of Technology, Lian-Hong will outline strategies for promoting cultural intelligence within institutions and the wider international education sector.
    • Dr Paula Durance (Australia) – Consultant to international education providers, Paula is a respected international education professional. She will be exploring strategies for developing professionalism in international education.

    There will also be a range of breakout sessions and workshops from practitioners, policy advisors and educators, including updates on work and study opportunities, tailored mental health practice, strategies for enabling social connections and overcoming communication obstacles and accommodation insights in relation to Code compliance.

  • New Zealand tertiary institutions make strong connections in Indonesia

    A series of education promotion engagements in Indonesia kicked off with a co-funded activity alongside local education agency ICAN Education that ran from 13 to 18 February.

    The schedule was packed with student outreach, school visits and a New Zealand Application Day in both Jakarta and Surabaya.

    All eight New Zealand universities, the Southern Institute of Technology, UC International College, Waikato College, UP Education and Le Cordon Bleu were involved in the roadshow.

    Jakarta

    The team began with visits to two international schools in the Greater Jakarta Area — BINUS School Serpong and Gandhi Memorial Intercontinental School. These sessions gave students a chance to learn about New Zealand’s tertiary education system.

    On 15 February, the New Zealand Application Day in Jakarta drew a crowd of around 435 students and parents. The event created a space for prospective students to speak with universities about undergraduate study options, application processes and life in New Zealand.

    Crowds gathered around university booths, eager to learn more and take their first steps towards studying abroad.

    Surabaya

    In Surabaya, the New Zealand Application Day took place on 16 February, the event attracted 183 attendees.

    The next day, institutions visited students at Cita Hati West and Cita Hati East schools. Engagement focused on introducing year 10 to 12 students to the New Zealand education system, helping them visualise study pathways and what student life in New Zealand looks like.

    Connecting with education agents across Indonesia

    Alongside student-focused activities, ENZ organised a series of agent networking events across Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Denpasar. These sessions formed part of the Study with New Zealand roadshow, which ran from 21 to 28 February and created space for deeper engagement between New Zealand providers and Indonesian education agents.

    Each event aimed to strengthen relationships, share updates, highlight New Zealand’s unique offerings, and help raise visibility for New Zealand education among prospective students.

    A range of education providers participated in the networking event, including University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, Lincoln University, Massey University, University of Otago, University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington, and UP Education.

    Education agents play a matching game with New Zealand tertiary providers and the regions where they are based at a networking dinner in Jakarta.

    ENZ Market Manager for Indonesia, Naluri Bella, presented the latest market promotional resources available to agents, followed by interactive quiz games hosted by New Zealand providers. These sessions were attended by around 30 agencies and gave agents the tools and confidence to market New Zealand as a study destination.

    Naluri said that there is an appetite in the region for high-quality international education experiences.

    “New Zealand is increasingly seen as a destination that offers both academic excellence and a welcoming, supportive environment,” she said.

    “Our institutions were able to showcase not only their study options, but the unique values and lifestyle that set New Zealand apart,” Naluri added.

     

  • NZ strengthens education ties in North America

    The visit was an opportunity to form relationships with international ministerial counterparts and key stakeholders, lead and participate in policy dialogue, and promote understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand’s education system and reforms.

    Minister Tinetti began her action-packed week of engagements in Ottawa, Canada where she hosted a round table lunch on international indigenous education at the New Zealand Official Residence. This was attended by Patty Hadju, Minister of Indigenous Services and representatives from Indigenous Services Canada, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, the Canadian Ministry of Education, the Canadian Bureau of International Education, and Global Affairs Canada.

    In between formal engagements, Minister Tinetti took time to visit York Street Public School where, as a former teacher and Principal, she enjoyed connecting with local students and teachers.

    Following a busy few days in Canada, Minister Tinetti and her delegation moved on to Washington D.C for the International Summit on the Teaching Profession (ISTP). The ITSP conference brings together 22 countries to discuss how to strengthen the teaching profession and ensure all students have access to quality education.

    ENZ’s Director of Engagement, Americas, Middle East and Europe, Dubois Jennings said Minister Tinetti made it clear that New Zealand valued the potential opportunities for mutually beneficial collaboration, and her interest in developing these relationships.

    “Minister Tinetti used her time at ISTP to make important connections with other countries, several senior US education officials and experts in specific areas of interest for New Zealand. Those interests include national policies around compulsory education, teacher training, professional development, higher education and vocational training” he said.

    Whilst in Washington D.C, Minister Tinetti also met with China Vice Minister of Education, Chen Jie. This bilateral meeting between New Zealand and China adds to the list of engagements at the Ministerial and Officials level over the past few months adding value to the strong education relationship between our two countries.

    Later in the week Minister Tinetti attended the ANZAC Dawn Service where she had the opportunity to meet with Australia's Minister for Education Jason Clare.

  • English New Zealand and Universities New Zealand sign MOU

    The MOU was signed on 19 June between Universities New Zealand, the peak body representing all New Zealand universities, and English New Zealand, which represents 22 private and state-owned English language schools (all Category 1) in 12 destinations around New Zealand.

    As part of the MOU, each of New Zealand’s eight universities will accept the Accredited Pathways Assessment ofan individual English New Zealand member as evidence of meeting their English language proficiency requirements.

    The Accredited Pathways Assessment for English New Zealand members will be in addition to the quality assurance requirements that all member schools must meet, over and above NZQA requirements. Member schools with accredited assessments will show the Accredited Pathways Assessment quality mark in addition to the English New Zealand membership logo.

    With approximately 20,000 students per year from over 75 countries studying at English New Zealand member schools, the memorandum will encourage a diverse range of students to consider a quality pathway to higher education in New Zealand, adding to the sector’s diversity and sustainability. 

    English New Zealand Chairman, Wayne Dyer, said English New Zealand and Universities New Zealand have been working together for some time to encourage and enable pathways to tertiary study in New Zealand.

    “This agreement is a significant step forward and combines rigorous quality assurance with pragmatism for the benefit of individual students and for New Zealand’s international education sector as a whole,” Dyer said.

    Universities New Zealand Chief Executive Chris Whelan agreed the university sector benefited enormously from these sorts of partnerships.

    “But we enter them only when absolutely certain that they meet the rigorous quality standards expected of New Zealand university education and qualifications,” Whelan said.

    “The fact that we have signed this MOU is a vote of confidence in the high quality of English New Zealand’s accredited providers.”

    ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson said the agreement was a great example of the ongoing collaboration between the university and English language sectors.

    “The MOU will go a long way to enabling the long-term growth of the international education sector.

    “This is in perfect alignment with the New Zealand International Education Strategy, with its focus on the sector’s sustainable growth,” McPherson said.
