  • NZ Education Fair in Bangkok sets record for provider attendance

    ‘Tis the Season for international education events in Thailand and the increasing numbers of providers and agents is testament to the popularity of New Zealand as a study destination amongst Thai students. The series of events held from 30 August to 2 September included an agent seminar, the Bangkok Education Fair and then mini fairs held in Chiang Mai and Chonburi. 

    The agent seminar was attended by 108 education agents from 79 companies, including a significant number of new agents. Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao’s (ENZ) Thailand Team delivered a presentation that covered insights into New Zealand’s brand health as a study destination and the current landscape of the Thai student market. Updates were well received, with feedback indicating that the majority of attendees were either satisfied or extremely satisfied with the content and the networking opportunities provided. This positive response underscores the value of agent engagement in Thailand.

    The Bangkok Education Fair, held on 31 August, saw the largest number of education providers in attendance in ENZ’s history. ENZ’s Market Manager for Thailand, Chortip Pramoolpol said that there were 79 representatives from 60 institutions, including all eight New Zealand universities, 44 schools, vocational institutions, private training establishments, and English language providers. 

    “The fair attracted 1,460 visitors, offering students and parents an excellent opportunity to connect directly with education providers.  

    Prospective students and their families engaged in one-on-one discussions about New Zealand’s academic programs, student life, and pathways to success. The event garnered positive feedback, with 84% of surveyed sector representatives reporting satisfaction or extreme satisfaction with the fair,” said Chortip.

    At the opening ceremony, New Zealand Ambassador Jonathan Kings presented the Alumni Hall of Fame Awards. These annual awards honour alumni who have achieved notable professional success, gained significant social recognition, and positively contributed to promoting New Zealand as a premier study destination.

    ENZ also organised a special seminar featuring three distinguished guests. Purachai Piumsomboon, the former Interior Minister of Thailand, spoke about his experience sending all three of his children to study in New Zealand from primary school through university. Additionally, Peterpan and Lilly Nichapalak, two influential figures with nearly one million followers, shared their personal stories about how studying at New Zealand high schools positively transformed their lives. 

    In the lead-up to the Bangkok fair, ENZ organised a series of events aimed at expanding outreach to Thai students. From August 27 to 29, ENZ conducted a school roadshow across six schools in Chonburi, delivering information sessions about studying in New Zealand. A notable highlight of the roadshow was a simulated classroom experience hosted by a New Zealand school, allowing Thai students to get a taste of the New Zealand education system firsthand.

    Following the main fair, a mini fair was held on 1 September in Chiang Mai and Chonburi offering another chance for prospective students and parents to interact with New Zealand education providers. The event series concluded with a final visit to two more schools on September 2, also in Chonburi and Chiang Mai. These additional events emphasised ENZ’s commitment to engaging with students beyond the main fair, fostering strong ties with schools, agents, and prospective students in the surrounding Bangkok region. 

     

  • From the CE: Ki te Ao - To the World

    Tēnā koutou katoa 

    This will be my last column as Acting Chief Executive, as later this month I will be handing over to Amanda Malu, ENZ’s incoming Chief Executive. 

    It has been a privilege to lead ENZ since November 2023.  Over the past eleven months I have had the pleasure of connecting with the sector and New Zealand Inc colleagues to advance New Zealand’s international education offerings to the world. I have also deeply valued being part of the ENZ team – I have been awed by the commitment everyone has to international education.

    It has been inspiring to be part of New Zealand Inc’s commitment to double the value of our exports in the next decade.  We are working alongside our major export agencies, and collectively working to find solutions.   

    The Government has also signalled increased focus on Southeast Asia as a key market for New Zealand.  Recently I was pleased to join our Minister, Hon Penny Simmonds, when she held bilateral meetings with senior delegations from the Philippines and Viet Nam.

    Some of the highlights during my time at the helm have included interacting with scholars at the first ever Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Conference in May, attending the New Zealand – China Education Forum with China’s Minister of Education His Excellency Dr Huai Jinpeng in June, and receiving the President of India, Honorable Smt. Droupadi Murmu, at our New Zealand International Education Conference (NZIEC) KI TUA in August. It has been wonderful to witness first-hand the transformative power of international education.

    I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone in the sector who work so hard to grow international education and its value to New Zealand. As I return to the Board, I am very much looking forward to seeing the sector continue to flourish.

  • Supporting PTEs to grow internationally

    The recent 2024 ITENZ Conference in September provided the ideal platform for Sharon-May McCrostie, Acting General Manager of Sector Engagement for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) to highlight some of ENZ’s work to support Private Training Establishments (PTEs) 

    Strengthening New Zealand’s reputation as a preferred destination for international students studying with PTEs by taking a collaborative approach with the subsector has been key, said Sharon-May. 

    This includes how ENZ works with PTEs to develop the subsector by organising roadshows, in-market education fairs, events and webinars. We also have a strong pipeline of activity ahead, working with PTEs through strategic marketing, partnerships, capability building, with a focus on delivering high-quality educational experiences,” added Sharon-May.

    During her presentation, Sharon-May highlighted four key points:

    • Expanding recruitment efforts in key markets such as India, China, Viet Nam, Latin America, and the Philippines, will be incredibly important in the diversification of the international student base. This will also be vital in achieving the New Zealand government’s goal to double export earnings from international education to $4.4 billion by 2027 and meeting the student enrolment target of 85,000 by 2024/25 (up from 69,000). 
    • ENZ conducts targeted marketing campaigns that aim to boost visibility and awareness of a New Zealand education. Providers can leverage ENZ marketing support in their international journey through tools like BrandLab for developing promotional materials and AgentLab for connecting with education agents. 
    • ENZ provides valuable market insights through IntelliLab, offering data on trends, student preferences, and enrolment statistics to help providers make informed decisions. 
    • Lastly, to improve the student experience, ENZ provides resources such as NauMai NZ and conducts an annual Student Experience Survey, giving providers insights into how they can better meet the needs of international students. 

    Sharon-May ended by confirming ENZ’s commitment to the subsector. 

    “We are committed to providing ongoing support for PTE providers through research, resource and capability building.  We look forward to continuing our efforts in supporting the growth of this very important part of New Zealand’s international education eco-system,” said Sharon-May. 

  • ENZ Indonesia launches Kiwi Challenge 2024

    On 21 September 2024, the Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ai (ENZ) team in Indonesia proudly launched the fifth KIWI Challenge, continuing ENZ’s collaboration with New Zealand universities. Each year, the competition is co-hosted by ENZ and one New Zealand university with the University of Otago invited to participate in 2024.   

    This year, university students will participate alongside high school students for the first time. Their challenge is to propose solutions that support youth-led Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). 

    The in-person and online launch event featured a virtual keynote speech by Associate Professor Conor O’Kane, Head of the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship programme at Otago Business School. In-person attendees included Associate Professor Leah Watkins, Director of Masters’ Programmes; Regional Manager Sarah Ewing; and Otago Master of Entrepreneurship alumna Fasya Amasani, who delivered insightful sessions about the university. ENZ’s Market Manager, Naluri Bella Wati, also provided an overview of the competition regulations. 

    The event attracted approximately 100 attendees, all eager to engage with this inspiring challenge. ICAN Education, one of Otago and ENZ's agent partners, served as the on-ground organiser.  

    Students have until 31 October 2024 to register and send in their video submissions. Following this, the top five teams from both high school and university categories will be selected to pitch their entrepreneurial ideas in the finals, scheduled for 7 December 2024.

  • A flurry of international education events in Europe

    September is often a busy time in the world of international education in Europe. To make the most of the time when students are gathering information to support their study-abroad decision-making, the Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) European-based team were making their presence felt at various events to support the school and tertiary subsectors grow their European connections and relationships. 

    This year’s 34th European Association for International Education Conference (EAIE) was held in Toulouse, France and saw a record number of 7,300 delegates from all around the world attend. The New Zealand pavilion had a strong presence with seven of our universities joining the ENZ booth.

    ENZ’s Associate Director of Engagement in Europe, Olga Elli, said that these conferences are a fantastic opportunity to showcase New Zealand’s expertise and offerings on a global stage.  

    “These conferences are a place where relationships are started and nurtured. They result in meaningful partnerships, exchanges and projects for the New Zealand international higher education sector. 

    “They are also an opportunity to showcase the manaakitanga that New Zealand is famous for. We hosted a get-together at the New Zealand pavilion providing New Zealand wine and French cheese, the perfect match to share with our trusted partners in Europe.,” said Olga.

    While in France, Olga also attended the student recruitment fair, Elevate, in Paris. This was organised by Study Experience, a Paris-based agency. With nearly 800 French students studying across all sectors in 2023, France is the second largest European country sending students to New Zealand. This trend looks set to continue with plenty of interest in the New Zealand stand at the fair, particularly for students looking for full-degree study programmes

    After Germany, Italy represents the second largest source of high school students from Europe and in 2023, New Zealand welcomed 227 Italian high school students to our shores. Growing this market and supporting agents to promote New Zealand is therefore a priority for ENZ.  

    To support this growth, several New Zealand high school representatives and Italian agents were given the opportunity to meet at the New Zealand Embassy in Rome in September. This was a chance to come together, connect and identify opportunities to work together going forward.

    The event was initiated by Terry Kraettli, Director International of Epsom Grammar School, with support from ENZ and the New Zealand Ambassador to Italy, Jackie Frizelle.

  • From the CE: New beginnings

    Tēnā koutou katoa 

    This is my first column as Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao’s new Chief Executive.  

    To take up the role is an honour and a privilege. ENZ first came into existence while I was working at the Tertiary Education Commission, and I knew at the time that it was a special agency with huge potential. 

    My first three weeks in the job have been busy and productive. I have enjoyed getting around meeting our staff, our New Zealand Inc and sector partners, with more introductory engagements in the diary in the weeks ahead.  

    It is immediately clear that while the recovery is happening, and that students are returning, there is much to do, and no shortage of opportunity.  

    Later this month I’ll be heading to Beijing to attend the China Annual Conference and Expo for International Education (CACIE). New Zealand and China share a long and important relationship, and China remains our largest trading partner. I am looking forward to meeting with our education stakeholders during this visit, as well as meeting our team in market. 

    Lastly, I want to acknowledge Dr Linda Sissons and her incredible contribution as Acting Chief Executive over the past eleven months. I’ve really valued her wise counsel and am pleased I will be able to continue to draw on her deep knowledge and experience in her capacity as a member of the ENZ Board.

  • NZ forges fruitful partnership with Paraná state, Brazil’s education powerhouse

    Following a visit to New Zealand universities in September by a delegation of authorities from Paraná state, Brazil, the Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence organised a reciprocal trip for a group of New Zealand educational representatives to go to Curitiba, Paraná’s capital city. The purpose of the visit was for the New Zealand delegation to get a closer look at the research structure of this southern Brazilian state and discuss future pathways for collaboration between Brazilian and New Zealand students and researchers.  

    The public higher education system of Paraná is made up of seven state universities and three federal institutions spread across several cities, with in-person and distance learning. They are quality research and teaching institutions, with substantial scientific production capacity and academic prestige. Paraná state has a population of roughly 11 million people. 

     

    New Zealand delegation meets with representatives of the State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Higher Education of Paraná and deans of state universities.

     

    During the meetings in the capital of Paraná, held in mid-October, there were several discussions with deans and vice-deans of state universities, representatives of the State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Higher Education and the Araucária Foundation, a state-funded institution that focuses on promoting high-level scientific research.

    The meetings were attended by Secretary Aldo Nelson Bona and his team; market development manager of Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) in Brazil, Bruna de Natale; Nicole Freeman, from the Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence; as well as representatives from 3 of the 8 New Zealand universities: Frank Bloomfield, from The University of Auckland, Leonel Alvarado, from Massey University and Jannik Haas, from the University of Canterbury. 

    Frank Bloomfield is deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation at the University of Auckland. During the visit he highlighted the importance of collaborating internationally with other universities to undertake research and how one cannot conduct research in your own country alone. 

    "I’ve had the pleasure of leading two delegations to Brazil this year. Firstly, in April for the Faubai conference, when we also had the opportunity to talk to some professors from leading Brazilian universities. And now this visit.  

    Despite our differing geographic and population sizes, the research priorities of our countries are very similar. We have heard from our colleagues here in Brazil that we have similar priorities but also similar problems,” said Frank.  

    An example of this is in agriculture and how we need to think about using new techniques and new technologies such as genomics to improve our productivity in agriculture. This also applies to a whole host of different areas in which our priorities are similar including freshwater and culture, engineering, and chemical sciences, for example,” added Frank.”  

  • Annual survey shows continuing strong support for international students in New Zealand

    More than three quarters of 1,100 New Zealanders in the annual 2024 survey conducted by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) believe the country should host the same or more international students in New Zealand.

    This was the key finding of research, completed in October, to measure New Zealanders’ views on the contribution and challenges of international students studying in New Zealand.

    For the first time this year, the annual survey asked respondents if they wanted to see more or fewer international students in the country. Forty-one (41) percent of those surveyed said they would like to see more, with another 36 percent supporting the same number of students. Only 11 percent indicated they would like to see fewer international students arrive. 

    Positive perceptions of international students also continued to track strongly with 72 percent saying the students benefit New Zealand. This followed similar levels of support of 75 percent in 2023 and 73 percent in 2022.

    Commenting on the findings, ENZ’s Chief Executive, Amanda Malu, said the results reinforced the growing support and understanding of the contribution of international students to local communities and the country.

    “Since 2018 we have seen increasing support for the contribution international students make in key areas,” said Ms Malu.

    “Today 82 percent of New Zealanders agree that international students contribute to our cultural diversity, with 79 percent feeling they help local students learn about other cultures and ways of life, as well as contributing to local businesses during their studies.”

    “This level of support is enormously pleasing. It tells us we can continue to steadily grow the number of international students in New Zealand and that they will continue to receive a warm welcome in our communities.”

  • New Zealand-China Early Childhood Education Symposium to be hosted in New Zealand for the first time

    The fifth annual New Zealand-China Early Childhood Education Symposium – themed around digital transformation in early childhood education is set to take place at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) in Christchurch on 3 December.  

    This is the first time that the symposium will be hosted in New Zealand.  

    A 31-strong delegation from China across 21 universities, schools, kindergartens and government agencies will attend the event 

    Co-organised by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), the China Center for International People-to-People Exchange (CCIPE) of the China Ministry of Education and UC, the symposium will see at least 25 presenters and 80 attendees from New Zealand and China present on a range of topics related to digital transformation in early childhood education. Audiences in New Zealand and China will also attend the symposium virtually. 

    Broad topics this year include emerging opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in teachers’ work in early childhood education, the use of digital technologies for early childhood education assessment, and digital transformation for communication and collaboration with families. 

    The event aims to foster academic exchanges and cooperation in early childhood education between New Zealand and China 

    In June, during the visit by Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Education Minister Huai Jinpeng to New Zealand, UC signed a partnership agreement with the CCIPE at the New Zealand-China High-level Education Forum in Auckland. UC is also a current New Zealand-China Tripartite Partnership Programme recipient with two Chinese partners, Shanghai Normal University and Qufu Normal University, around early childhood education.  

    ENZ Acting General Manager International Ben Burrowes said the symposium highlights the long and fruitful bilateral engagement between New Zealand and China across a number of education areas.  

    “I am delighted to have New Zealand host the event for the first time. We have seen the symposium grow and go from strength to strength over the last five years and nurture relationships between our early childhood education providers 

    “I look forward to hearing from presenters across the education landscape in both our countries sharing insights on digital transformation in early childhood education,” Burrowes said. 

    The University of Canterbury is honored to be the first tertiary institution in New Zealand to host the symposium, says Professor Joce Nuttall, Executive Dean of UC’s Faculty of Education Te Kaupeka Ako 

    “As a university committed to future-focused education and the creation of meaningful local and global impact, the symposium is an invaluable opportunity for UC to engage in discussions with peers across New Zealand and China on the future of early childhood education between our two countries.”  

    Since 2020, the New Zealand-China Education Symposium has explored a rich range of themes and inspirational presentations on early childhood education, including exploring best practice for developing high-quality early childhood education teachers, and sustainable development in early childhood education and care.

  • Prime Minister’s Scholarship group round opening soon for applications

    New Zealand organisations and institutions will soon be able to apply for this year’s group round of Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America.

    This award is administered by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), enabling New Zealanders to experience international education and continue to build and maintain key trade relationships between New Zealand and key Asian and Latin American regions.

    Acting Group General Manager, International Marketing, Brand & Scholarships, Sahinde Pala, said the group programme is flexible, and applicants are encouraged to think creatively about their learning programmes.

    “We invite organisations and institutions to design a learning experience that can give learners the chance to follow their passion, develop connections, and make an impact in our global and local communities” she said.

    Successful past applications have included semester exchanges, language immersion, indigenous-to-indigenous exchange programmes, internships, and research projects.

    Applications can be made by any education provider (including universities, institutions, wānanga, iwi, hapū, whānau, institutes of technology and polytechnics, and private training establishments). 

    About the scholarship

    All citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand over the age of 18 can apply for the scholarship. Recipients do not need to be in tertiary education, as the programme aims to make international educational opportunities accessible to all New Zealanders.

    The scholarships cover tuition fees for offshore institutions, and a contribution towards internship fees, flights, living, accommodation, and visas.

    Since the programme’s beginning in 2013, at least 3810 scholarships have been granted to New Zealanders.
