  • From the CE: Going for growth

    Kia ora koutou 

    The month of February has seen several important announcements. 

    Firstly, we received confirmation that the Minister of Education, Hon Erica Stanford, now has responsibility for international education and Education New Zealand.  

    Minister Stanford is also Minister of Immigration and the Lead Coordination Minister for the Government’s Response to the Royal Commission’s Report into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions.  We are looking forward to working closely with our new Minister to advance her priorities for ENZ and international education. 

    The Government also announced its economic growth plan, Going for Growth: Unlocking New Zealand’s potential. International education is a key plank in the Government’s economic growth agenda and it is one of New Zealand’s major export revenue generating sectors – one that generates jobs, supports the labour market, attracts and retains global talent, and enhances New Zealand’s international relationships. As a sector, international education contributed $3.34 billion in value to the New Zealand economy to the year ending June 2024. 

    Continuing that theme, economic growth is the focus of the Prime Minister’s visit to Viet Nam this week. Our brand health research has identified Viet Nam as the fastest growing market for awareness of New Zealand as an education destination. International education is a central feature of the mission, which has strong provider representation. I’m looking forward to participating and will be sharing some insights in my next column. 

    This month we were delighted to welcome Dr Ron Xavier as ENZ’s new Regional Director Greater China and Counsellor Education. Ron joins us from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment where he was the Science and Innovation Counsellor. Ron has worked in China for over six years and has previously been involved in prime ministerial visits and Chinese ministerial visits to New Zealand. I had the pleasure of meeting Ron when I was in China late last year and know he will be a great addition to our team in Beijing.

  • Thailand retention campaign launches to encourage long-term study in New Zealand

    ENZ Thailand has launched a retention campaign to encourage students from Thailand who have previously studied here to return to New Zealand for further study. 

    Students who choose to continue their education in New Zealand will be eligible for an air fare scholarship (valued up to NZD $3,000), making it easier for them to travel and transition into long-term study. At least 25 New Zealand education providers have volunteered to subsidise the award.

    The campaign has already generated strong interest. It was launched at the New Zealand Summer Pre-Departure Orientation on 1 March in Bangkok with over 240 students and parents in attendance.

    The scheme will work with students or education agents providing proof of previous study. Once the students are in New Zealand, they can rebate the air fare through coordination with their agents.

  • PM’s mission to Viet Nam marks significant progress in international education

    Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s recent trade mission to Viet Nam saw significant education outcomes delivered, including boosting the number of available Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship awards, increasing the number of the New Zealand Schools Scholarships (NZSS) to 45 places and introducing 14 New Zealand Universities Awards (NZUA) for the first time, as well as the announcements of several new partnerships between Vietnam and New Zealand education providers.  

    Education New Zealand Chief Executive, Amanda Malu, joined five providers for the education component of the trade mission - The University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, Media Design School, Pacific International Hotel Management School, and Neurofrog (edtech company). 

    The New Zealand-Vietnam EduConnect at Foreign Trade University was a significant education event in Hanoi, where Amanda joined Prime Minister Luxon in witnessing the signing of cooperation arrangements between education institutions in New Zealand and Viet Nam.  

    The EduConnect event also recognised the contribution of alumni to the friendship between our countries, with the launch of the inaugural New Zealand Alumni Network in Viet Nam. 

    ENZ Regional Director, Ben Burrowes said it was a wonderful opportunity to underscore the importance of people-to-people links in strengthening bilateral relations 

    “This comes at an auspicious time, as New Zealand and Viet Nam celebrate the 50th anniversary of our longstanding partnership,” he added.

    AUT Vice-Chancellor Prof. Damon Salesa, Chair of Universities New Zealand's International Committee, represented Universities New Zealand to sign the Collaboration Arrangement with the Department of International Cooperation of the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training.  

    The arrangement provides additional support to Project 89 scholars who wish to study in New Zealand. Project 89 is one of Viet Nam’s key initiatives to support its education sector, allowing local lecturers to pursue PhD study and postgraduate study overseas on fully-funded scholarships. 

    Following the success of education engagements during this trade mission, Amanda Malu, said New Zealand sees significant potential in strengthening education partnerships with Viet Nam.  

    “New Zealand will continue to expand the range of initiatives in Viet Nam across all levels of education, from schools to postgraduate study, to make it easier for Vietnamese students to engage in knowledge exchange, innovate and realise their dreams of studying abroad,” 
     
    “With Vietnam’s ambitious education and technology goals for 2045, our nation is well-positioned to support this journey,” she added.  

  • New Zealand tertiary institutions make strong connections in Indonesia

    A series of education promotion engagements in Indonesia kicked off with a co-funded activity alongside local education agency ICAN Education that ran from 13 to 18 February.

    The schedule was packed with student outreach, school visits and a New Zealand Application Day in both Jakarta and Surabaya.

    All eight New Zealand universities, the Southern Institute of Technology, UC International College, Waikato College, UP Education and Le Cordon Bleu were involved in the roadshow.

    Jakarta

    The team began with visits to two international schools in the Greater Jakarta Area — BINUS School Serpong and Gandhi Memorial Intercontinental School. These sessions gave students a chance to learn about New Zealand’s tertiary education system.

    On 15 February, the New Zealand Application Day in Jakarta drew a crowd of around 435 students and parents. The event created a space for prospective students to speak with universities about undergraduate study options, application processes and life in New Zealand.

    Crowds gathered around university booths, eager to learn more and take their first steps towards studying abroad.

    Surabaya

    In Surabaya, the New Zealand Application Day took place on 16 February, the event attracted 183 attendees.

    The next day, institutions visited students at Cita Hati West and Cita Hati East schools. Engagement focused on introducing year 10 to 12 students to the New Zealand education system, helping them visualise study pathways and what student life in New Zealand looks like.

    Connecting with education agents across Indonesia

    Alongside student-focused activities, ENZ organised a series of agent networking events across Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Denpasar. These sessions formed part of the Study with New Zealand roadshow, which ran from 21 to 28 February and created space for deeper engagement between New Zealand providers and Indonesian education agents.

    Each event aimed to strengthen relationships, share updates, highlight New Zealand’s unique offerings, and help raise visibility for New Zealand education among prospective students.

    A range of education providers participated in the networking event, including University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, Lincoln University, Massey University, University of Otago, University of Waikato, Victoria University of Wellington, and UP Education.

    ENZ Market Manager for Indonesia, Naluri Bella, presented the latest market promotional resources available to agents, followed by interactive quiz games hosted by New Zealand providers. These sessions were attended by around 30 agencies and gave agents the tools and confidence to market New Zealand as a study destination.

    Naluri said that there is an appetite in the region for high-quality international education experiences.

    “New Zealand is increasingly seen as a destination that offers both academic excellence and a welcoming, supportive environment,” she said.

    “Our institutions were able to showcase not only their study options, but the unique values and lifestyle that set New Zealand apart,” Naluri added.

     

  • Growing visibility of New Zealand education in Latin America

    From 12 -21 March, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) held its first in-market, in-person roadshow in Latin America since before the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of 18 New Zealand education providers took part in the activities held in Colombia (Bogotá), Brazil (São Paulo), and Chile (Santiago), which brought together 143 representatives from 97 education agencies.

    Representatives from institutions across New Zealand’s education sector (universities, English language schools, PTEs, and secondary schools) had the opportunity to network with agents and recruit students directly, strengthening connections with strategic partners and raising the profile of New Zealand in Colombia, Brazil, and Chile.

    ENZ’s Director of Engagement for Latin America, Javiera Visedo, and Brazil Market Development Manager, Bruna de Natale, led the activities in all three countries. They provided full support to the New Zealand delegation, offering strategic information to maximise the professionals' time with Latin American partners, as well as sharing insights about the New Zealand institutions with local agents.

    Through institutional presentations, one-on-one meetings with agents from the three countries, and collaborative discussion panels, where all shared best practices and ideas for continuing partnerships and New Zealand institutions were able to advance their business relationships with local partners.

    This was also the perfect opportunity to launch the Spanish and Portuguese versions of ENZ’s Learn New Everyday marketing campaign, that was well received by agents as it provided them new assets and videos to use in local languages.

    During the South America Roadshow, some New Zealand institutions also took part in parallel events in Bogotá and Santiago, organised by ENZ in collaboration with local partners. This included a student fair and a dedicated session with private and International Baccalaureate schools, reflecting the growing interest from students and families in pursuing undergraduate studies in New Zealand.

    Director of Engagement Latin America, Javiera Visedo, said engagement between New Zealand institutions and the Latin America market advanced significantly during the roadshow. 

    “There is no substitute for the connections and momentum we build when we meet face-to-face, and the trusted relationships we build,” she said.

    “Engagements like these are key to ensuring the sustainable growth of students from Chile, Colombia, and Brazil to New Zealand,” Javiera added.

    Feedback from education sector participants was positive. Director of Mount Maunganui Language Centre, Geoff Butler, said he wouldn’t hesitate to get involved in these events again. 

    “Post-pandemic, we were keen to have official events to reconnect with these markets - the events didn’t disappoint,” he said.

    “There were excellent opportunities throughout each event day to engage with agents not only at our desks, but informally too,” Geoff added.

  • Positive outcomes for education from PM’s trade mission to India

    Prime Minister Rt Hon Christopher Luxon led a high-level visit to India from 16–20 March, accompanied by one of the largest New Zealand delegations to date. The delegation included representatives from the business, community, media, and government sectors, along with a cultural delegation, Te Kapa Haka o Te Whānau-a-Apanui.

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) Chief Executive Amanda Malu joined the trade mission as part of the education component of the delegation – alongside University of Auckland Vice Chancellor, Dawn Freshwater; Vice Chancellor, University of Waikato, Neil Quigley; Te Pūkenga/NZIST Chief Executive, Gus Gilmore and Whitecliffe College Executive Chairman, Feroz Ali.

    The mission saw a number of key education initiatives announced that aim to strengthen New Zealand’s education ties with India, including the signing of the refreshed bilateral Education Cooperation Arrangement (ECA).

    These initiatives mark a significant step forward in deepening New Zealand’s collaboration with India around joint research, student exchanges, academic innovation and fostering long-term institutional partnerships.

    The original ECA was signed in 2010 with the objective of strengthening bilateral cooperation between New Zealand and India and fostering collaboration and the exchange of information on individual education systems.

    The ECA refresh builds on this foundation and aims to foster further cooperation in education specifically through information exchange, collaboration between institutions, and sharing best practices in curriculum development, digital transformation, and sustainability.

    A key education engagement during the mission was the ‘Shared Visions and Connected Futures’ event on 18 March, co-hosted by ENZ and New Zealand Centre partner IIT Delhi. Key education and government stakeholders were brought together to celebrate education, innovation, and the strong ties between New Zealand and India.

    Six new memoranda of understanding (MOU) were signed on the day, with an additional four signed across other events and cities. The New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) scholarships were officially launched by Prime Minister Luxon and ENZ Chief Executive Amanda Malu - this is a joint initiative between ENZ and all eight New Zealand universities offering a total of 29 scholarships valued at NZ $260,000.

    An exclusive virtual internship programme was also launched – this initiative will provide opportunities for 30 IITD students to intern virtually with New Zealand organisations. The event also witnessed the announcement of the inaugural New Zealand Centre Innovation Fellowship which aims to enhance collaboration between New Zealand and India in innovation and entrepreneurship by providing a two-week immersive experience in India's innovation ecosystem.

    To round off a packed programme, the Prime Minister hosted a "Fireside Chat” with celebrity alumni from University of Auckland and the University of Waikato, where they showcased their experiences studying and living in New Zealand.

    ENZ Chief Executive Amanda Malu said the event was a testament to the strength of New Zealand’s educational relationship with India. 

    “India and New Zealand share a longstanding education relationship. Our collaborations bring enduring benefits to both nations. We look forward to continuing to work together to innovate, grow our skills and co-create education solutions for our future,” she said.

  • Successful agent engagement and student recruitment drive in Malaysia

    The events aimed to gauge student interest in studying in New Zealand and deepen collaboration with education agents and schools.  

    To kick off the series, in early March, ENZ and representatives from New Zealand universities co-hosted a morning tea information session and focus group for Malaysian education agents in Kuala Lumpur.  

    The session promoted the ENZ resources available to support agents, and representatives from University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, Massey University, University of Otago, and University of Waikato led a discussion exploring key messages that resonate with Malaysian students and parents, understanding the factors influencing destination choice and brainstorming strategies to strengthen New Zealand’s brand visibility.  

    The event brought together 11 agencies from across Kuala Lumpur.   

    Co-funded agent activity 

    ENZ supported three key education agencies from across Malaysia to undertake co-funded student recruitment activity.  

    In Selangor, AECC Global Malaysia and ENZ hosted a mini-booth fair at HELP International School – giving students the opportunity to interact directly with representatives from Auckland University of Technology, the University of Auckland, the University of Canterbury, University of Otago, and the University of Waikato.

    Over to Shah Alam, SELSET Education partnered with INTEC College to host an information session showcasing eight of New Zealand’s tertiary institutions 

    INTEC College students heard from the Auckland University of Technology, the University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, University of Otago, University of Waikato, Southern Institute of Technology, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and pathway provider, University of Canterbury International College 

    Around 100 students were in attendance, and the session was followed by an opportunity for students to chat further with the study providers on show.

    To close out the co-funded activity, ENZ made its first official visit to East Malaysia since before the pandemic. 

    ENZ and JM Education partnered to lead a series of school visits in late April Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.  

    Around 400 students attended information sessions across three schools. The events were led by the University of Auckland and University of Otago at Kota Kinabalu High School, Sekolah Menengah Sains Sabah, and Maktab Nasional.

    ENZ Market Manager for Indonesia and Malaysia, Naluri Bella, said that partnering with agents for co-funding targeted activities helps enhance both agents and students’ awareness and understanding of New Zealand’s unique education offering.  

    “These collaborations not only build trust and commitment among agents but also positions New Zealand as a competitive and credible choice for Malaysian students,” she said.  

     

  • Announcing the recipients of the Welcome to New Zealand Scholarships

    The initiative was warmly received across Germany, Italy, and France, where it was promoted with the goal of encouraging students to experience the world-class education and unforgettable lifestyle that New Zealand has to offer.

    As part of the campaign, we offered four scholarships, each valued at 5,000 EUR to go toward tuition fees at New Zealand secondary schools or tertiary institutions. These scholarships were designed to support talented and passionate students on their journey to study abroad.  

    A key highlight of the campaign was our collaboration with Air New Zealand, who will generously sponsor return flights for the scholarship recipients. Their support played a pivotal role in making the dream of studying in New Zealand even more accessible for the winners.

    The scholarship attracted over 200 applications – with a majority coming from Germany, followed by Italy and France.  

    During the campaign period, there were 19,965 total views on the Welcome to New Zealand Scholarship page on the Study with New Zealand website.  

    The campaign generated 172 lead enquiries to New Zealand providers (118 enquiries from Germany, 47 enquiries from France and 7 from Italy). These enquiries are sent straight on to the education providers so they can directly engage with the prospective student on their study interests.   

    Meet the recipients 

    Germany 

    The scholarship winner from Germany is 16-year-old Manuel Fink, from Unterhaching (near Munich) 

    Manuel will be heading to Te Puke High School, where he’ll immerse himself in both the academic and cultural experience of studying in New Zealand.  

    A passionate advocate for New Zealand and its education system already, Manuel has his sights set on becoming a pilot — ideally flying for Air New Zealand one day! 

    Our tertiary scholarship recipient from Germany is currently finalising their enrolment, and we look forward to announcing their name once the process is complete. 

    Italy 

    Our Italian scholarship recipient is 16-year-old Lea Sagliaschi from Milan. Lea will be attending Selwyn College and is full of excitement for what she describes as a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in Aotearoa New Zealand. 

    Unfortunately, no recipient could be selected from France this year due to a lack of eligible applications — however, the ENZ Europe team remains committed to engaging with prospective students in the French market and looks forward to stronger participation in future campaigns. 

    ENZ Associate Director of Engagement Europe, Olga Elli, said the campaign raised great awareness of New Zealand’s education system in European priority markets and opened the door to new experiences and opportunities for winners. 

    “We look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to share the unique value of a New Zealand education with European students and partners,” she said.

    ENZ underwent an organisational change process early in the new year, with the creation of the International & Sector Engagement team, which has a stronger focus on international services, with the aim of ensuring a seamless flow of market and sector intelligence to support sustainable growth in New Zealand’s international education sector.

    We have held online sessions with deep dives into enrolment information, brand health and student experience to help you understand the work that ENZ does to assist your planning. We have more data and insights sessions planned in the year ahead and the survey is your opportunity to signal what else we can do to support your work.

  • From the CE: Purpose, Place and Partnership

    Kia ora koutou,  

    I am pleased to report that the cross-agency work to develop an International Education Growth Plan for the Prime Minister and Ministers is progressing well. 

    In recent weeks, Education New Zealand has held a series of engagements with different parts of the international education sector to validate assumptions on supply and focus markets, and to better understand current system capacity and which interventions will enable quality, sustainable growth. This work continues at pace. 

    Last week, we were delighted to welcome to our Wellington office a visiting delegation of senior school leaders from the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education - East Asia Global Education Institute. At the mihi whakatau, I explained the Māori phrase Nau mai and the New Zealand way of showing hospitality and care (Manaakitanga) to visitors. 

    The visit was a valuable opportunity to reinforce New Zealand and its education institutions as trusted partners for South Korea. I am certain their stay, which included visits to New Zealand schools and vocational training institutes, will contribute to raising awareness of the New Zealand education system in their hometowns and strengthen ties with education providers here.   

    Later this month I will be travelling abroad for NAFSA, the world’s largest international education conference, which will be taking place in San Diego, California. The theme this year is Purpose, Place and Partnership, and it is one that resonates in a time of global uncertainty. I am looking forward to engaging with our sector partners and team in market, as well as showcasing New Zealand’s unique education offering to the world
