  • Introducing Misako Pitt, Tokyo

    We are delighted to announce that we have recruited Misako (Misa) Pitt to step into the role for a 13 month assignment.  Misa joined the team at the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo on 3 August.

    Misa was born in Los Angeles, USA and grew up in Australia and Japan.  She graduated with a BA in economics from Stanford University and went on to complete a Masters at Columbia University.  Misa is a Certified Public Accountant and has worked in a range of finance roles with US corporates.  Her most recent role was Executive Director of the Australian and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ANZCCJ) where she was accountable for the operation of all organisational activities of the ANZCCJ, including event management, public and media relations, programme initiatives, membership recruitment and financial and staff management.

    As the co-Chair of the Stanford University OVAL (Outreach Volunteer Alumni Link) in Japan, Misa has been passionate about promoting international education to the Japanese educational community.  Misa also has a passion for film and worked on promoting an American/Japanese medical documentary called ‘The Power of Two’, an official selection at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2011.

    Both Fiona and Misa will be at NZIEC 2015 in Hamilton this month.  Please take the opportunity to introduce yourself to the ENZ Tokyo team! 

  • From the CE: Memorable trip highlights value of international education

    This was the first mission led by the Prime Minister since our borders closed in 2020, and it combined education, tourism, New Zealand businesses and government agencies. It sent a clear message that New Zealand is open for business and ready to reconnect with the world.

    A couple of excellent things happened in Singapore from an education perspective, the first at Gardens by the Bay, which is a nature park of more than 100 hectares, visited by around 14 million people every year.  

    At a ceremony to mark the unveiling of a bespoke Māori carving, the Chief Executive of Gardens by the Bay, Felix Loh, spoke about his education experience in New Zealand 30 years ago. He said that studying for a Bachelor of Horticulture at Massey University had a huge impact on his life and career, not only because of what he learnt from his studies, but also because of the care and support he received here. It was a great endorsement of the best that an education in New Zealand can offer and highlighted to everyone who heard him that international education brings long-term value.

    We had a similar experience the following day, at the signing of an MOU between the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and FoodBowl, a New Zealand food innovation network based in Auckland. The senior signing official for SIT was their President, Professor Chua Kee Chaing, who was a student in New Zealand 40 years ago. Again, we saw the warmth and long-term relationships that are generated by international education.  

    The Japan part of our trip featured several events with a specific focus on international education, including signing an agreement with Japan Women’s University, relaunching Game on English for female rugby players, and an event at the Cookie Time store in Tokyo with an opportunity to meet previous participants in the working holiday scheme, including former students. You can read more about these events in a separate article in this issue of E-News. 

    It was great to meet people who feel such a strong connection to New Zealand, even after many years have passed. We often refer to the social, cultural and economic benefits of international education – what we experienced on this trip brought those words to life and marked another significant step on our path to rebuild New Zealand’s international education sector.

  • ENZ Agent Seminars in China make a strong impact for rebuilding connections

    China is the largest source of international students for New Zealand with agents being the leading channel for student recruitment in this market. Building strong connections between providers and agents in China is critical to recovering student mobility, improving awareness of New Zealand as a study destination and strengthening New Zealand's market position. ENZ's Agent Seminars in China are a well-recognised and impactful way of building relationships with a range of key agents.

    In addition, Agent Seminars also help to keep agents informed with the latest official information and is an important tool that Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) and other NZ Inc agencies use to share such information. According to recent Immigration New Zealand (INZ) data, agents in China have a high approval rate for student visa processing.   

    Currently, ENZ runs its Agent Seminar series twice a year in this region and this latest series of events held in Chengdu, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Beijing were supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and INZ. INZ’s China-based representatives gave in-person presentations, an initiative which was well received with 88% of agents reporting its inclusion as “very or extremely important to their attendance in a post-event survey.

    To leverage the visibility of New Zealand education providers in the China market, ENZ facilitated media interviews and social media recordings for participants at the Shanghai and Chendgu Seminars. New Zealand providers and ENZ representatives in Chengdu conducted interviews with 13 journalists, the highest response rate for media attending Agent Seminars to date. As a result, three million views were achieved from 58 stories published by 27 local media outlets, with New Zealand university representatives quoted in a media story and an exclusive interview and story for Te Pūkenga on the uniqueness of New Zealand's vocational education in a separate article.

    In Shanghai, the ENZ Shanghai team delivered a China marketing insights session for sector representatives. The presentation titled “Unlocking China’s Education Market: Insights and tools for successcovered:  

    • The key drivers of the consumer 

    • China’s media/digital/social media landscape​ 

    • The big four – WeChat, Little Red Book, Douyin and Bilibili (case studies included) 

    • ENZ’s China local marketing plan​.

    ENZ collaborated with Shinyway, the largest agent in the eastern region of China to produce short videos for the agency to promote online. The online promotion aimed to leverage brand awareness of a New Zealand education showcasing New Zealand providers attending the Shanghai eventA big kudos goes to the 18 brave New Zealand representatives who accepted the invitation to participate in the filming. Education Counsellor and Regional Director Greater China, Michael Zhang, was also interviewed to present the advantages of a New Zealand education and our institutions across all sectors. 

    Shinyway has published all the videos on their consumer-facing social media platforms, including WeChat, Little Red Book, and Weibo. The collaboration enhances New Zealand providers’ market exposure by leveraging Shinyway's influence across their digital platforms and reaching prospective audiences in China elevating our brand profile within a highly targeted audience group.

    87.5% of New Zealand education providers also said that attendance at the seminars was either very valuable or valuable for their organisation.”

  • Virtual events around the world

    Viet Nam: Career fair at Nguyen Sieu School (NSS)

    Representatives from eight New Zealand providers attended a career fair at Hanoi’s Nguyen Sieu School (NSS) last month.

    With no cases of community-transmitted COVID-19 for the past six weeks, Viet Nam has started to return to normal life. Schools have reopened just ahead of the end of the academic year.

    Usually, the NSS Career Fair only allows in-person representatives from foreign institutions. However, thanks to ENZ’s strong relationship with the school, our institutions were represented by proxy – either an education agent or alumnus. A representative from the institution was also permitted to join via video link.

    As a result, New Zealand’s presence was well ahead of our competitors like Canada (with two institutions), the UK (also two), or Australia (three).

    ENZ Viet Nam Market Manager Van Banh says this is a great example of how key in-market relationships will be critical as international education looks to conduct usual activity online.

    “This year’s NSS Career Fair was an exciting example of how we can incorporate digital technology into our in-person events,” she says.

    North America: NAFSA eShowcase

    For the first time ever, the world’s biggest B2B international education conference was held entirely online.

    More than 9,000 international educators from over 100 countries were expected to attend the conference in St. Louis, Missouri over 25-29 May before COVID-19 forced organisers to take it to the digital world. In the end, over 2,000 attended the eShowcase.

    Participants were able to visit ENZ’s virtual booth and engage either through chat or live video conversations at designated times.

    New Zealand universities and ITPs had dedicated times to host a ‘Virtual Showcase’, which is a mechanism by which NAFSA exhibitors presented, met or collaborated with attendees via a dedicated Zoom session.

    “The process of moving the largest in-person B2B international education conference in the world online has been a big learning curve, not only for ENZ and the individual booths and attendees, but for NAFSA themselves,” ENZ Director of Engagement – North America, DuBois Jennings, says.

    “With no live, conference-wide chatroom or method to see a list of conference participants it felt isolating at time on the booth, which is very different from the normal, in-person NAFSA conference. However, it has been a valuable learning experience as the international education industry looks for new ways to connect virtually.”

    China: China Education Expo (CEE)

    In late May, representatives from ENZ, all eight of New Zealand’s universities and the NZIST were offered a unique opportunity to engage directly with students from China and their parents.

    The annual China Education Expo (CEE) is one of the biggest events in the Chinese international education calendar. But ENZ Market Development Manager, Jane Liu, says this year’s engagement through the virtual platform is greater than they would usually expect.

    “Although ENZ has worked with the CEE for years, this is the first time we’ve been collaborated with them online. We can see this being useful to New Zealand institutions even after COVID-19.”

    Each university provided a one-hour presentation sharing their programmes and how they can work with interested students once COVID-19 precautions have been lifted. The NZIST representative also gave a detailed introduction to the reforms the ITP sector has recently gone through.

    The webinars have garnered a combined total of 1000 views, and have been recorded and hosted on WeChat so that students and parents can watch them at their leisure.

  • Investment in growing academic mobility with South America

    ENZ invites proposals for new research

    ENZ and Brazil’s São Paulo Research Foundation (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo – FAPESP) are jointly funding new research projects to encourage academic cooperation and mobility between our countries.

    Each is contributing $100,000 to enable eight or more established academic researchers across all fields, to conduct research in the other’s country. The first year of the funding agreement will act as a pilot.

    FAPESP is a public foundation with a mission to support research projects in higher education and research institutions, in all fields of knowledge. 

    As part of the agreement with FAPESP, successful applicants from New Zealand will develop their projects in cooperation with researchers in Brazil. The researchers will then travel to Brazil to undertake the research with their partners. Brazilian researchers will be funded to come across to New Zealand in turn. 

    ENZ General Manager International, Lisa Futschek, says the funding collaboration will create opportunities for New Zealand researchers that did not exist before.

    “South America is a key market for Education New Zealand – particularly in relation to outbound academic mobility. This new funding collaboration showcases ENZ's commitment to creating new pathways for New Zealand institutions with South America."

    This announcement builds on years of relationship-building, and an agreement with Universities New Zealand (UNZ) in November 2016 to enhance cooperation, enable academic mobility and encourage the exchange of knowledge between participating higher education institutions.

    ENZ Senior Market Development Manager – Brazil, Ana Azevedo, says: “The professors and researchers that will be involved in these research projects will have the opportunity to play a vital part in driving this relationship forward. They will be ambassadors for their university and New Zealand.”

    Universities explore deepening 'south-to-south' connection with delegation

    This October, senior academics and researchers from all eight New Zealand universities took part in a 10-day visit to Colombia and Brazil. The delegates explored options to collaborate in new areas such as pharmaceutical sciences and build on previous historical collaboration in areas such as agri-business.

    In Colombia, the delegation were part of the official New Zealand presence at Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE-CAEI). 

    “At CAIE-CAEI, members of the delegation spoke on a panel to highlight areas of ‘south to south’ academic collaboration between Latin American and New Zealand universities,” says ENZ Regional Director – Americas and Europe, Amy Rutherford.

    In Brazil, the delegation met with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (“Fiocruz”), the most prominent health-focused science and technology institute in Latin America.

    They also visited the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and São Paulo State University (UNESP). At UNESP, the programme included meetings with Brazilian academics from universities across the country, including the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), the Federal University of Parana (UFPR), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and the University of São Paulo (USP).

    In both Colombia and Brazil, the delegations participated in ‘Innovation and Education in New Zealand’ seminars for students, where they met with undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in studying in New Zealand. These seminars were co-hosted by members of the Universities New Zealand (UNZ) Latin America Elite Agent programme.

    “I was pleased to see the high calibre of the New Zealand, Colombian and Brazilian academics and researchers who came together during the 10-day programme," Rutherford says. "The future of New Zealand-Colombia and New Zealand-Brazil academic and research collaboration looks bright!”

  • World-class fusion cuisine and culinary skills at Viet Nam gala dinner

    The three teams, each consisting of two Vietnamese and two New Zealand students, showcased their culinary skills on stage in front of 170 guests, including New Zealand Minister of Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, Steven Joyce.

    The event was the outcome of two months’ hard work for the three teams, who initially worked together online to develop their menus under the guidance of culinary mentor and 2013 MasterChef New Zealand finalist, Vanessa Baxter. The teams met face-to-face in Ho Chi Minh City on 3 June, and then spent the following three days visiting Vietnamese markets to collect their fresh local produce before finalising their menus at the Caravalle Hotel kitchen.

    At the gala dinner, the guests were treated to a selection of dishes from the students’ three-course fusion menus. Meanwhile, the three official judges – Haike Manning, New Zealand Ambassador to Viet Nam; Le Xuan Tam, Executive Chef, Caravelle Hotel and Brendon Partridge, Executive Chef, JW Marriott Hanoi – sampled all of the student’s dishes throughout the evening.

    Decision making was tough and competition was high. Team 1 narrowly missed coming first, and Team 2 won the guest vote.

    Minister Joyce announced Team 3 as the overall winner. Their braised lamb shanks with pickled cabbage, potato rosti and reduced jus proved most popular. This team included Jamin Gibson (Auckland University of Technology), Emma Waser (Otago Polytechnic), Phan Văn Lâm (Viet Giao Tourism School), and Nguyễn Ngọc Quân (VATEL International Business School Hotel & Tourism Management).

    “It is so amazing that we won the competition,” said Emma Waser. “We gelled so well as a team throughout the whole competition but we worked especially well together on the night.

    “We had to delve into each other’s cultures and traditions to come up with our fusion menu. I have learned how important it is to mix it up – to use different flavours and borrow from other traditions and cuisines. 

    “It has been amazing to come to Viet Nam and see what else is out there in the world – to find out more about different cultures, different people and different food.”

    Said Jamin: “I have really enjoyed the food, the friendliness of the people and their hospitality. I definitely want to return to Viet Nam with my wife.”

    Nguyễn Ngọc Quân enjoyed learning how to cook lamb the Kiwi way. “I learned to cook lamb the way that is more traditional in New Zealand. Typically the Vietnamese dislike the smell of lamb but our slow cook method and flavours in the lamb shank proved really popular.

    “I admired my New Zealand team mates’ techniques and knowledge as well as their ability to think innovatively and creatively,” he said.

    The gala dinner was the result of the New Zealand – Viet Nam Culinary Collaboration, an initiative that came out of the New Zealand – Viet Nam Strategic Plan on Education signed in November 2015. The plan is designed to deepen the level of engagement between the two countries and enrich students’ learning.

    “The New Zealand – Viet Nam Culinary Collaboration is yet another example of the growing education relationship between our two countries,” said ENZ Chief Executive, Grant McPherson.

    “While it has been fantastic to see the outstanding teamwork between the students, the gala dinner was also an opportunity to showcase New Zealand institutions’ vocational expertise and our education system’s world-renowned practical application of skills which prepare students for the working world.”

    Grant emphasised that everyone involved in the collaboration was a winner.

    ‘Nau mai’ is a te reo Māori phrase of invitation and welcome and NauMai NZ is the NZ government's official student experience platform, designed to support international students living and studying in Aotearoa New Zealand 

    NauMai NZ is written in plain English and provides practical, trusted, peer-reviewed content, designed to support and improve students’ living and study experiences. This includes information and resources to support students before arriving in Aotearoa (including useful tips on moving to New Zealand and what they need to bring), though to information to help them navigate daily life once here, including on:    

    • Making friends and building social connections  
    • Exploring and experiencing Aotearoa – the culture and the country 
    • Getting advice to improve wellbeing, study and living experiences
    • Managing money, finding accommodation, and understanding healthcare in New Zealand 
    • Balancing work and study and understanding workplace culture, and much more.

    ENZ has also developed the NauMai NZ WeChat Mini Programme. This is a companion platform to the English platform, to better support Chinese students who prefer the WeChat ecosystem. Information from the English platform is available in Chinese on the mini programme, as well as specific features that provide peer-to-peer support, such as video sharing, livestreams, forum functionality and student stories.

  • Introducing Joyce Hu in Taiwan

    What is your role at ENZ in Taiwan?

    I joined ENZ in October 2015 as Education Marketing Manager in Taipei, replacing Jamie Chien. I divide my time between ENZ (30 percent) and MFAT at the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office (70 percent), where I provide executive and administrative support to the Director.  At ENZ, I report to Regional Director – Greater China Alexandra Grace.

    What are your priorities in this role?

    My priorities are to:

    • Raise the profile of New Zealand education to agents

    • Support New Zealand education providers doing business in Taiwan, by introducing them to local stakeholders

    • Organise and run ENZ’s marketing and promotional activities on behalf of ENZ

    What’s your connection to New Zealand?

    I have participated in an MFAT management course in Wellington, and also escorted a Taiwan television crew to New Zealand to shoot a feature programme on New Zealand business and society.

    I have a lot of experience in running events, managing official visits and dealing with requests for consular assistance from New Zealanders in Taiwan.

    I am passionate about New Zealand as a lovely place to live, to work, and to study, and I enjoy telling the New Zealand education story in Taiwan.

  • Successful agent engagement and student recruitment drive in Malaysia

    The events aimed to gauge student interest in studying in New Zealand and deepen collaboration with education agents and schools.  

    To kick off the series, in early March, ENZ and representatives from New Zealand universities co-hosted a morning tea information session and focus group for Malaysian education agents in Kuala Lumpur.  

    The session promoted the ENZ resources available to support agents, and representatives from University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, Massey University, University of Otago, and University of Waikato led a discussion exploring key messages that resonate with Malaysian students and parents, understanding the factors influencing destination choice and brainstorming strategies to strengthen New Zealand’s brand visibility.  

    The event brought together 11 agencies from across Kuala Lumpur.   

    Co-funded agent activity 

    ENZ supported three key education agencies from across Malaysia to undertake co-funded student recruitment activity.  

    In Selangor, AECC Global Malaysia and ENZ hosted a mini-booth fair at HELP International School – giving students the opportunity to interact directly with representatives from Auckland University of Technology, the University of Auckland, the University of Canterbury, University of Otago, and the University of Waikato.

    Over to Shah Alam, SELSET Education partnered with INTEC College to host an information session showcasing eight of New Zealand’s tertiary institutions 

    INTEC College students heard from the Auckland University of Technology, the University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, University of Otago, University of Waikato, Southern Institute of Technology, Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and pathway provider, University of Canterbury International College 

    Around 100 students were in attendance, and the session was followed by an opportunity for students to chat further with the study providers on show.

    To close out the co-funded activity, ENZ made its first official visit to East Malaysia since before the pandemic. 

    ENZ and JM Education partnered to lead a series of school visits in late April Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.  

    Around 400 students attended information sessions across three schools. The events were led by the University of Auckland and University of Otago at Kota Kinabalu High School, Sekolah Menengah Sains Sabah, and Maktab Nasional.

    ENZ Market Manager for Indonesia and Malaysia, Naluri Bella, said that partnering with agents for co-funding targeted activities helps enhance both agents and students’ awareness and understanding of New Zealand’s unique education offering.  

    “These collaborations not only build trust and commitment among agents but also positions New Zealand as a competitive and credible choice for Malaysian students,” she said.
