  • From the Chief Executive: Shared ambition for the future of New Zealand international education

    It was a pleasure to come together in Wellington this month when ENZ convened the Peak Body Forum, particularly with the Minister of Education, Hon Erica Stanford, joining us for an open and constructive discussion on the future of international education in New Zealand.

    The Forum reinforced the strong momentum behind the International Education Going for Growth Plan. The Minister spoke about her ambition for the sector and her determination to unlock opportunities that will enable international education to achieve its full potential.

    At the Forum, the Minister announced changes to post‑study work visa settings to support delivery of the Growth Plan. By supporting international graduates with valuable skills while maintaining high education quality, the changes make New Zealand more competitive internationally and reinforce our reputation as a destination of choice.

    The Peak Body Forum continues to be a powerful example of what we can achieve together. Government agencies and peak bodies at the table, working collectively for the long-term success of New Zealand international education.

    It was also a pleasure to attend ICEF ANZA in Wellington this month and connect with education agents and providers from New Zealand, Australia and around the world. I was proud to see New Zealand providers so strongly represented and to welcome our international agent partners. Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington and the Wellington City Council were magnificent hosts. Hon Erica Stanford made an inspiring address to welcome the delegates.

    I want to sincerely thank sector stakeholders across the motu and around the world for the work you are doing every day to boost and grow New Zealand education’s profile internationally.

  • PIF Recipient: Virtual Medical Coaching

    In the United States alone, approximately 800 women die each year during pregnancy and within 42 days after delivery. More than 60% of those deaths are believed to be preventable. In developing countries, the rate of pregnancy-related deaths is up to 300 times higher. 

    An important part of the solution is education. Globally, midwives are in high demand, with the UK’s NHS increasing their places for student midwives by 3000, starting this year. Australia is also planning to increase numbers, while in New Zealand, a funding boost will increase the number of Māori and Pacific students training in midwifery. 

    While the demand for midwifery training is growing, education offerings haven’t kept up. Childbirth is deeply personal, and feedback from mothers – validated by hospital staff – is that they do not wish to have extra staff or students in the room for training. With no effective opportunities for face-to-face learning, there is a global need for a realistic and scalable childbirth simulation. 

    That’s where Virtual Medical Coaching’s vision comes in, supported as a recipient of the International Education Product Innovation Fund. Virtual reality (VR) software will provide a safe and controlled environment for students to see and assist in childbirth simulations, both with and without complications and in a range of different scenarios. As the student improves, the simulations they encounter increase in difficulty. A machine-learning algorithm enables fast and accurate feedback to both the learner and any tutors. 

    The simulation will be interactive and responsive, meaning that any action taken by a student creates a life-like consequence and reaction. The outcome is that learners are taught to effectively make decisions and problem solve. 

    Existing options for midwifery training include a physical mannequin simulator, but this can be prohibitively expensive, out of reach of many training providers, and doesn’t offer students maximum learning hours. In addition, existing options don’t include the ability to witness mechanisms like rotations/restitutions or the ability to have back and forth conversations. By contrast, the VR simulation will be available to students wherever they are, and whenever they need to practice. The nature of the VR experience means that modern learning styles, such as asynchronous and remote learning, are well catered for. 

    With support from the International Education Product Innovation Fund, Virtual Medical Coaching’s childbirth simulation is on track to become fully released by the end of 2024. A beta-version is already used by some educators globally. The Product Innovation Fund is a New Zealand Government-funded initiative to reimagine what a New Zealand education can look like and mean for global learners.  

    Managed by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), New Zealand’s government agency for international education, the fund is supporting a range of pilot projects from existing and emerging New Zealand education providers. Together, the projects rethink how an education experience from New Zealand can be delivered, and create impact, for global learners. 

    For Virtual Medical Coaching, it’s about finding a better solution to a serious issue. Like many other innovative Kiwi education technology companies, Virtual Medical Coaching is designing technology that will create positive impact around the world. It’s already successfully developed an x-ray simulation for healthcare professionals which has won multiple national and international awards. Now, with the support of ENZ through the International Education Product Innovation Fund, Virtual Medical Coaching is set to respond to a clear need for better midwifery training options and develop another cutting-edge learning product for both New Zealand and offshore markets.

  • Huge response to Indonesia promotion

    Prime Minister John Key and Education New Zealand Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, recently visited Indonesia. One of the highlights of the trip was a Jawa Pos event in Surabaya involving 2,500 students and 500 teachers to promote a competition to win a trip to New Zealand.   
     
    Jawa Pos is the largest newspaper group in Indonesia with over 500,000 copies circulated daily. Zetizen is Jawa Pos’ new news portal targeted at young people aged between 12-23 years old.

    Jawa Pos wanted to generate a buzz around the launch of their new platform. After consulting with NZ Inc. in Indonesia it was decided that a competition to win a trip to New Zealand would be the perfect hook to grab young people’s attention.

    The tagline of the competition is: be a good Zetizen and go to New Zealand. Young people are being tasked with taking a positive action in their community and writing a short essay about why they should be chosen to come to New Zealand.

    Jawa Pos has been profiling New Zealand and New Zealand educational institutions since the competition launched in May. The newspaper group will fly 34 young Indonesians to New Zealand in November for the trip of a lifetime – all captured and documented by a group of journalists who will be accompanying them.

    Education New Zealand, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade are putting together a fantastic programme. The group will visit schools and tertiary institutions in Auckland, Rotorua and Wellington. They will also get the chance to sample the wonderful tourist activities and fantastic food New Zealand has to offer.

    This competition is giving New Zealand fantastic profile and reaching a very targeted age group. These young people may very well go on to study in New Zealand.

  • NZIEC 2016: Celebrating 25 years of coming together

    With a record 650 delegates marking the occasion, including 90 speakers, six plenary and keynote sessions, and 44 breakout sessions, there was a lot going on.

    Dr Adam Fraser kicked things off with an inspiring keynote address on The Third Space. It’s an ideal technique to better manage your time in the fast moving international education industry.     In her Q&A with conference MC Miriama Kamo, Professor Stephanie Fahey, Lead Partner for Oceania at Ernst & Young, provided a range of insights on the future of the international education industry

    Our conference dinner hit a high point as we celebrated 25 years of networking and collaboration. Cultural icon Elena wowed delegates with her personal story, which spoke to the importance of developing international connections firmly grounded in one’s culture.

    On Day two, Jim Moser, Chief Executive of Clemenger BBDO New Zealand, provided insights into the future of marketing. Dopamine and oxytocin have never been mentioned more at a NZIEC than after his entertaining and insightful address!

    Friday rounded off with David Bell from ASB Bank outlining how their organisation has used technology to continue innovating to stay one step ahead – including the development of the new Clever Kash cashless money box.

    Feedback for the conference has been positive, with 94 per cent of attendees rating the conference good to excellent. Furthermore, some 83 per cent of delegates agreed or strongly agreed that NZIEC added value to their organisation.

    Towards NZIEC 2017

    NZIEC 2017 will be held on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 August 2017 at the Sky City Convention Centre in Auckland.  We’re already getting to work on designing the experience for NZIEC 2017, so please contact Sam Mackay if you have any suggestions.   • Kiwi students attend Tokyo Experience School

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) supports a range of international exchange programmes that, as well as attracting international students to New Zealand, also provide New Zealand students with the opportunity to have their own international education experiences overseas. These offer unique cross-cultural learning opportunities that develop our global citizens, serve to plant the seed for future overseas education experiences in our learners, while also promoting New Zealand’s education system on a global level.  

    One such programme is that organised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education (Tokyo MBoE), an Education Cooperation Partner of ENZ since 2017. The programme fosters education exchanges between New Zealand and Tokyo and each year, the Tokyo MBoE invites students to attend the Tokyo Experience School through an application process, promoted to secondary schools by ENZ. In 2023, Rangiora High School was selected by the Tokyo MBoE to send four students and one chaperone to Tokyo, joining other students from around the world for ten days in December.  

    Lachlan Palmer, SeungWoo Jeong, Ariana Ferguson and Oliver Burns are all studying Japanese at Rangiora High School, and were the fortunate students selected to attend on behalf of their school. The four students were accompanied by their school’s Teacher in Charge of Japanese, Jessica Bradley. 

    The experience proved to be a true immersion in Japanese culture and student life for the Rangiora High School Year 11-13 students with the students staying with local host families, travelling to school in rush hour, attending class and joining club activities such as chalk art, judo classes, and rugby training. The experience also gave students the opportunity to take part in several traditional experiences such as getting dressed in a kimono and attending Sado (tea ceremony). 

    All four students said that this Japanese exchange trip was one of the most interesting and valuable experiences they had every done and couldn’t wait to go back. 

    Lachlan said “The real highlight of this trip was with my host family and my time at school there. Seeing the differences and similarities between Japan and New Zealand in person allowed me to enjoy and learn about Japan in a way like no other and gave me the chance to share my own culture from New Zealand. It is safe to say I will be returning as soon as I can”.  

    One of Ariana’s favourite moments of the whole experience was trying on the kimono. She said "it was amazing to experience what it was like to wear, walk and feel in a Kimono and it is something I will never forget. I also loved meeting students in my class and not only learning about their likes/dislikes but sharing mine too and a New Zealand culture with them. They were so kind and welcoming, and I honestly can't wait to go back!”

    SeungWoo enjoyed experiencing in person the culture that he has been learning so much about at school. He said “my host brother and I went to several famous places in Japan such as Tokyo Tower, Skytree, Akihabara, Shinjuku, and Shibuya. However, I believe that the highlight of the trip was being able to experience the Japanese food my host family made for us, and the amazing experiences my host brother and I have experienced such as karaoke.’ 

    Lastly, Oliver noted how interesting it was attending a Japanese school and some of the differences. He said “there was a lot of school spirit, much more so than my home high school, and I loved how much the student body supported each other. My favourite parts of school were the friends I made in class (and the bento lunches!). 

    ENZ will continue working with Tokyo MBoE on cross cultural education opportunities. If Tokyo MBoE continue the Tokyo Experience School, ENZ will share the EOI with New Zealand schools when it is available, usually around September. 

  • India to feature as Country of Honour at NZIEC KI TUA

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) has joined with the High Commission of India in Wellington to bring to life this partnership, which celebrates the growing education connections between Aotearoa New Zealand and India.   

    The announcement comes close on the heels of significant bilateral engagements between New Zealand and India over the last year 

    Watch this message from the High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, Her Excellency, Neeta Bhushan, on India featuring as Country of Honour at NZIEC KI TUA 2024.

    The Country of Honour designation at NZIEC KI TUA celebrates New Zealand’s international education connections with partner countries and reflects one of the conference’s key valueshononga (connections). 

    ENZ’s Acting Chief Executive, Dr Linda Sissons, said ENZ is delighted to headline India at NZIEC KI TUA and build on the strong foundation of international education connections with partners in the country. 

    Students from India are the second-largest group studying with New Zealand. We are enriched by the skills and research know-how that Indian students bring to our country. New Zealand has a number of valuable institutional and government-level partnerships that make for a strong, bilateral education relationship with India 

    We look forward to showcasing and celebrating these connections at NZIEC KI TUA 2024.” 

    ENZ’s Regional Director Asia (excluding China), Ben Burrowes, said having India feature as Country of Honour is a valuable opportunity for the international education sector to contribute to the conference programme with sessions that surface insights and learnings focused on India. 

    New Zealand and India have such a broad education relationship, from student recruitment and student experience to partnerships on an institutional and governmental level. There’s much to surface and share by way of insights to continue forging our strong education ties. 

    “We look forward to collaborating with our sector colleagues to deliver a conference programme that showcases these connections and explores new partnerships moving forward.”

    Brazil unveils new HE internationalisation scheme

    Brazil is replacing the Sciences without Borders (CSF) initiative with a new international mobility financing regime, aiming to enhance bilateral relationships with overseas partners. The new fund will be targeted towards postgraduate students and early career researchers looking to develop research abroad. While the CSF was managed at a federal level, the new scheme gives more autonomy to universities, requiring them to form an internationalisation strategy with international partners.

    74% of public value international students when economic worth revealed

    New research has found that people’s attitudes towards international students change when learning of their economic contribution and the jobs they generate. In a recent survey, only 12% of respondents wanted to see more international students in the country, but this doubled to 24% when they learned of the economic gains. Similarly, the 20% who wanted to see less international students in the country dropped to 13% when told of the economic value of international students.

    French tech: A hot spot for entrepreneurs, 15 years in the making

Students from France’s world-leading business schools are now choosing tech over other job options, with one third of French students stating they would like to either found or join a start-up.     South Korean teens top in maths and science, but lack interest

    South Korean students are excelling in science and mathematics, but the way the subjects are taught is not kindling interest in the students, a new report reveals. While South Korea placed fifth worldwide in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2015 science test, and first for maths, they ranked 26th and 28th (out of 35) in terms of interest. Professor Lee Joo-ho of the Korea Development Institute (KDI) says the disparity can be traced to the “learning by rote” method in the nation’s schools.

  • Making New Zealand’s roads safer for students

    The Visiting Drivers Project is aiming to do just that. The project is a collaboration between the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and its road safety partners, including the Automobile Association (AA), and rental vehicle operators and tourism operators across the country.

    The focus for the project is the Otago, Southland and West Coast regions where visiting drivers make up a large proportion of traffic. On roads in these regions, safety improvements such as centre-line rumble strips, “keep left” arrows, “no-passing” markings and new signage have been installed. Road safety information has also been made more accessible and user-friendly, with resources available in different languages and formats, including interactive videos and apps.

    Over summer, during the regions’ peak visitor season, an education campaign will be run to help visiting drivers understand and prepare for driving in New Zealand.

    Jim Harland, NZTA’s Regional Director, Southern, says the strength of the project has been in the shared objective of ‘host responsibility’ and a partnership approach that ensures visitors are helped at every stage of their journey.

    While the project is largely aimed at tourists, it will benefit all newcomers to New Zealand, including international students.

    “We want all visitors who are driving on our roads, including students, to make good decisions based on correct information about travel times, speeds and conditions,” he said.

    “It’s our responsibility as New Zealanders to help our visitors have a safe and enjoyable time.”

    The Visiting Drivers Project initiatives also include the following, many of which are available in different languages.

    • AA’s online Visiting Driver Training Programme, which includes video footage of New Zealand driving scenarios.
    • Apps with road safety messaging such as CamperMate.
    • Air New Zealand’s 'Driving in New Zealand' in-flight app (available on long-haul flights) and videos on all international flights about driving in New Zealand.
    • A 'Driving in New Zealand' leaflet available from rental vehicle and other tourism operators, and can be downloaded here.
    • Providing road safety information to successful applicants for student visas.
    • Guidelines for accommodation providers to provide practical driving advice to their guests.
    • A Rental Vehicle Operators’ Code of Practice.

  • Universities New Zealand to strengthen ties with India

    Stronger ties between New Zealand and India at the university level are a key outcome of the Prime Minister John Key’s visit to India currently underway.

    Universities New Zealand (UNZ) has made two announcements: development of an engagement strategy to strengthen relationships with India and attract more university students to New Zealand; and a Strategic Education Partnership Agreement with the Maharashtra State Government.

    Professor Harlene Hayne, Chair of Universities New Zealand and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago, says, “Currently, students from India make up five per cent of the 26,000 international students who are studying at a New Zealand university. 

    “We recognise there is significant potential to attract and welcome increasing numbers of university-level students from India.”

    The strategy builds on an increasing university market presence in India, with student visas for first-time university students from India up 18 per cent through to August 2016. Professor Hayne says the UNZ India Strategy, which will be formally launched in early 2017, will see New Zealand’s universities working collectively to promote study in New Zealand, and to further develop and strengthen partnerships between institutions in India and New Zealand.

    UNZ and ENZ are co-sponsoring the strategy. ENZ Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, says, “We are delighted to partner with our universities in India, and applaud their leadership in investing in the long-term future of this hugely important market.”

    The Strategic Education Partnership Agreement with Maharashtra State Government provides a framework to explore academic opportunities between the two countries, added Professor Haynes.

    Maharashtra State Government in Western India is the second most populous state in India with over 112 million inhabitants. Its capital, Mumbai, has a population of approximately 18 million. Maharashtra has 24 universities with a turnout of 160,000 graduates every year, while New Zealand has eight universities and 43,000 graduates each year.

     “This strategic agreement offers us an avenue to build institutional engagement between our universities, through faculty relationships and exchanges, research and innovation collaboration, and information sharing.”

  • International students affected by bank changes

    As a result of the Global Tax Information Reporting and Anti Money Laundering campaign, all banks in New Zealand, as well as other financial institutions, are required by law to collect additional information from a foreign tax resident before they can open an account in New Zealand. As part of these changes, banks also require a certified copy of (or, in some cases, the original) the student’s passport (bio-page) and proof of current residential address. Those who apply to open a bank account while outside New Zealand will be required to provide proof of their current overseas residential address, and to present themselves at the bank to activate the account when they arrive in New Zealand.

    The same changes are being implemented in other countries that are part of this global initiative.

    These changes also apply to international students who intend to use INZ’s Funds Transfer Scheme (FTS) to transfer their funds to New Zealand. Note the FTS is only available to international students from certain countries.

    FTS information

    If applying for an account under the FTS in the near future, ANZ, the New Zealand bank that operates the FTS, may contact the student to complete additional forms to ensure they capture the additional information they require. These forms include questions around the student's tax information, and the student themselves will need to complete and sign these forms (not their agent).

    For FTS accounts only, acceptable proof of residential address includes:

    • utility bill (e.g. landline telephone and power only)
    • rates bill (e.g. property tax document)
    • tax certificate
    • insurance policy document

    The document(s) listed above must be less than three months old and must state the student's name and their residential address. Where the student is living with their parents and the document states their parents' name(s), a parent whose name appears on the document must provide a letter stating that the student lives with them.

    Note there may be some delays visa application processing while Immigration New Zealand and ANZ work through these changes.
