  • INZ replacing physical visa labels with eVisas

    INZ’s Assistant General Manager Peter Elms says while eVisas are currently issued to all visa applicants who use online channels, this is now extended to include paper-based applications.  

    “INZ has been issuing eVisas since 2016, and nearly half of all visas currently issued are label-less. This means education providers should expect to see more eVisas,” says Peter.

    “Successful applicants will receive an approval letter with the visa details via email which they should print and keep with their passport. Other than the letter, education providers and employers can verify visa details via INZ’s VisaView online system.

    “On the rare occasion that an applicant does not have an email address, arrangements can be made to post the decision letter.”

    Peter adds that while there is no need to have a physical visa label in a passport, INZ recognises that some individuals may prefer to have one. A label can be obtained by request by filling in an application form and a fee of $110.

    INZ advises that students using Provider Direct (an on-campus system run between the education provider and INZ) will continue to receive labels. INZ will review this over the next year.

  • SIT students journey to Japan

    The students are Bachelor of Information Technology or Master of Information Technology students at SIT. Thanks to the scholarship, they are participating in an eight-week Cybersecurity and Internet of Things Knowledge Transfer and Cultural Programme at Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST).

    Accompanying the students is Dr John Ayoade, the academic leader of the Master of Information Technology programme at SIT. Having previously worked at Tokyo’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Dr Ayoade took the group to visit NICT to attend presentations and hands-on workshops by its cybersecurity experts and researchers.

    “The PMSA programme will help the students to build connections, networks and friendships, and develop a deeper understanding of the Japanese language and culture,” said Dr Ayoade.

    “They’ll also gain an international perspective that will stand them in good stead for their future careers, and in the short-term, contribute to ideas for their postgraduate and master’s projects at SIT.”

    Staying in Kichijoji, a vibrant suburb in Tokyo, the students have also had some down time to explore Shinjuku, Akihabara, Shibuya, Harajuku and SkyTree and visit the local shops, cafes and restaurants.

    Having just concluded their first week, they are excited and looking forward to learning from the talented professors at NAIST.

  • A new home for international students

    After extensive refurbishment, the Ellen Melville Centre and redesigned Freyberg Place in the heart of the city have re-opened to the public in September 2017.

    The combined facility offers an open air public space for relaxing and enjoying the sunshine, as well as an indoor community centre with an exciting new range of programmes and activities – many of them free of charge.

    The Auckland Agency Group (AAG), a cross-agency collaboration of central and local government agencies set up to improve international student wellbeing in Auckland, welcomes the new space and format. 

    Hayley Shields, ENZ’s Director of Student Experience and Chair of AAG, said the location of the new community centre makes it an ideal spot for international students to meet locals and other students.

    “An estimated 20,000 international students reside in the CBD and want to be part of the local community.

    “The centre will be a great place where international students can converge, meet and make new friends and feel part of the community.”

    Formerly known as Pioneer Women’s and Ellen Melville Hall, the new Ellen Melville Centre has five diverse spaces that can be booked for meetings, private functions, exhibitions, films, concerts and performances.

    Individuals, and arts, cultural and community groups interested in providing programmes at the centre are encouraged to make contact on this link.

  • ENZ calls for funding proposals for New Zealand-China research partnerships

    The New Zealand-China Tripartite Partnership Fund 2023 offers funding of up to NZD 20,000-30,000 for each partnership project, with the call for proposals open until 1 March 2023.

    The fund supports new or existing research partnerships between New Zealand and Chinese universities. There are usually three universities involved – two from China and one from New Zealand. 

    The Tripartite Partnership Fund, administered by ENZ, has a pool of up to NZD 100,000 in 2023 for research partnerships in the arts, humanities, social sciences, sciences and applied sciences. Designed to encourage strategic academic relationships, it supports the creation or development of the partnership rather than funding the research itself. 

    With the global Covid-19 pandemic restricting some international travel, the fund welcomes innovative ideas. Current investments include digital technology services, communications platforms, translation costs and journal access.  

    At the recent New Zealand-China 10th Joint Working Group held on 22 November, senior officials at the meeting noted the value of Tripartite research relationships and the impact of having funding from both governments to establish new partnerships or nurture established research collaboration. Li Qing, Deputy Secretary General China Scholarship Council, remarked on the benefits of both student mobility through scholarships and closer research links such as the Tripartite Partnership Programme. The co-chair of the Joint Working Group, Vice Minister Tian Xuejun, stated in his closing remarks that China and New Zealand should continue to strengthen existing cooperation activities, listing the Tripartite Partnership Programme as one of the initiatives. 

    Lisa Futschek, General Manager International, reinforced ENZ’s commitment to administering the fund.  

    “We remain committed to the Tripartite Partnership Programme and its valuable contribution toward stronger global connections, research links and partnerships – key goals under the revised New Zealand International Education Strategy, launched by Minister Hipkins in August this year. We look forward to many more partnerships under this programme.”  

    Established in 2005, the Tripartite Research Partnership is a valued part of the New Zealand – China bilateral education relationship and we welcome proposals from researchers to join the growing list of funding recipients.

  • Exploring indigenous exchange programmes and internships

    The students, from University of Auckland and AUT, are part of the British Columbia & New Zealand Indigenous Student Mobility Project,a two-year programme that aims to provide reciprocal, short-term learning abroad and professional development and networking opportunities for indigenous students. The students will be joined by five First Nations students from Victoria University (UVic) in Canada, who are also part of the programme.

    Next year the Kiwi students will travel to Vancouver and be hosted by UVic for the 2020 GIC. UVic is a leader in the Canadian Co-Op model, where an internship is a required component of the university degree. 

    “Increasing access to international learning opportunities for all students, and in particular our Māori and Pasifika students, is an important goal for the University of Auckland,” says Brett Berquist, University of Auckland’s Director International.

    “Community and family are key to this strategy, and the chance to share and learn from First Nations students and academics at UVic is a great opportunity for our students.”

    The Student Mobility Project aims to engage indigenous students in immersive experiences that help them to establish and maintain relationships with other indigenous students and communities, industry, academics, and higher education professionals. It intends to provide a forum for indigenous students to present their perspectives and experiences, facilitating an exchange of ideas and networks.

    At the GIC, the students will share their perspectives and experiences on how international experiences benefit indigenous communities, how to best connect indigenous communities internationally, and how work placements and co-operative education have influenced their lives and careers.

    Karima Ramji, UVic’s Manager of International Programmes will also discuss critical success factors in developing indigenous international work-integrated learning exchange programmes.

    The GIC will feature further perspectives on global internships via a panel of University of Auckland Māori and Pasifika awardees of the Prime Minister’s Scholarships funded internships in Asia and Latin America.

  • Events season wraps up in the Philippines

    Ben Burrowes, ENZ’s Regional Communications & Strategic Relations Manager for South East Asia, said the events were a fantastic way to sign off on a successful year in the Philippines.

    “The market has not been without its challenges in 2017 but we’ve made some great progress in shifting perceptions away from a migration focus on New Zealand to promoting our world-class offering for high-value students,” said Ben.

    “Much of that has been achieved through building networks with local and international schools. Our latest series of school roadshows, in which we were joined by a number of New Zealand providers, built some strong partnerships particularly as we look to recruit the new K-12 Filipino graduates into our tertiary system.”

    ENZ also co-funded three successful agent-led fairs with Golden Summit Immigration Consultancy (Cebu), IDP (Manila) and Fortrust Education Services (Manila) with more than 25 providers attending. The feedback from all providers was very positive and the events were well attended – particularly the Fortrust fair, which attracted more than 2,200 visitors.

    Close to 100 local guidance counsellors and career advisors attended a training session hosted by Unitec, which included a soft-sell presentation on New Zealand’s world-class education offering.

    “This growing network of local counsellors and career advisors is proving valuable, as they  have a strong influence on prospective students,” said Ben.  

    “We’ll continue to work with them closely as we focus on recruiting a greater number of Filipino students into our undergraduate programmes.”      

    ENZ also generated some great media coverage, a highlight being an NZ Inc. media roundtable in Cebu which included David Strachan (the New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines), Hernando Banal (New Zealand Trade Commissioner), Steven Dixon (Tourism New Zealand’s Regional Director), Catherine Albiston (Immigration Advisors Authority) and ENZ’s own John Laxon, Regional Director – South, South East Asia & the Middle East.

  • Bringing Sunshine to a Beijing winter

    The series was launched in Beijing on 3 November at a National Symposium on EFL Reading in Schools.

    Some 900 teachers from across China attended the two-day symposium, which included a demonstration English class using the books.

    Judy Stevenson, Educational Manager of Wendy Pye Publishing, and Adele Bryant, ENZ’s Regional Director for China & North Asia also attended, and were pleased by the response to the series.

    “The teachers were very positive about using the books in their classrooms and could see that the emphasis on creative language would be more engaging for their students,” said Judy.

    Professor Wang Qiang, Director of the Centre for Foreign Language Education and Teacher Education at Beijing University endorses Sunshine Books at the China launch.

    “Students are encouraged to use their imaginations and have fun with language in a way which is new for Chinese education.”

    Adele said ENZ had supported Wendy Pye Publishing to pursue these export opportunities through an export growth programme, administered by the Publishers Association of New Zealand. 

    “Breaking into the huge educational publishing market of China is a milestone for a New Zealand publisher and comes after many years of commitment by Dame Wendy Pye and her team to developing the relationship with FLTRP,” said Adele.  

    The collaboration will see the Sunshine readers’ and teachers’ notes marketed to junior high schools throughout China.

     

  • Meet the Dream New scholarship recipients

    ENZ received nearly 300 applications from across 20 EU countries. Candidates were chosen based on their fantastic academic results as well as creative motivational essays or videos.

    The winners begin their New Zealand adventure in February or July 2018, and as official ‘Kiwi Ambassadors’ will keep us updated throughout their time in New Zealand.

     Lisa Futschek, ENZ Regional Director – Americas and Europe said the 10 recipients reflect the growing number of high-quality European students that look to New Zealand for a unique study abroad experience.

    “European students immerse themselves into the Kiwi lifestyle very easily. They value the wide range of programmes our education providers offer and the accessibility of our professors and tutors – in their home countries, this relationship tends to be much more formal,” said Lisa.

    “They are also quite adventurous, and in their free time they will use every opportunity to explore the beautiful New Zealand landscape and engage in outdoor pursuits they have heard so much about.”

    The scholarship was launched in December 2015 by Prime Minister John Key as part of the FTA campaigning in Europe. The scholarship offers EU students one study abroad semester in New Zealand (valued at up to $12,500 NZD), sending students to New Zealand universities and ITPs.
