Spotlight on Sri Lanka: A growing market for New Zealand
The international student demand from Sri Lanka is strengthening across universities, private training establishments (PTEs) and institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs).
New Zealand’s growing popularity is also evident in international student enrolment trends: 3,120 Sri Lankan students enrolled for study in New Zealand between January and August 2025, marking an impressive 57 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.
ENZ’s Market Manager – Sri Lanka, Monika Chaudhary said New Zealand’s growing popularity in Sri Lanka as a study destination reflects both rising aspirations among Sri Lankan learners and their strong confidence in New Zealand’s education offering.
“With strong momentum building organically in Sri Lanka, ENZ is supporting this opportunity by investing in its marketing efforts, combining out-of-home advertising, promotions on radio, social media channels and an expanded “New Zealand Taught Me” campaign.
“This campaign showcases authentic stories of Sri Lankan students studying in New Zealand – helping build aspiration and trust in the New Zealand brand,” Monika said.
Watch below ENZ’s recent feature that highlights the journey of Manodya, a Sri Lankan student in New Zealand.
A highlight of ENZ’s promotions in the market is the first ever Study with New Zealand Roadshow to be held in Sri Lanka from 5-8 March, featuring 19 New Zealand education institutions across three subsectors.
The roadshow aims to strengthen institutional partnerships, increase visibility of New Zealand’s education offering in Sri Lankan schools, and provide targeted support for education agents through seminars and capability‑building sessions.
ENZ is also partnering with Thames International to deliver the Colombo and Kandy student fairs on 7-8 March, supported by extensive promotions, including digital promotions through Study with New Zealand channels that will help nurture prospective students and maintain their interest in New Zealand education offerings beyond the events.
This coordinated effort reflects New Zealand’s long-term commitment to Sri Lanka as a market with strong and sustainable growth potential across the entire tertiary sector.

Haere rā: Farewell message from outgoing Chief Executive Amanda Malu
Tēnā koutou katoa,
As I close out my time as Chief Executive of Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao, I leave with confidence in the future of the international education sector for New Zealand.
Over the past year the sector has continued with steady and balanced growth, contributing more than $4.52 billion annually to the economy and enjoying enduring public support for international students.
Our most recent New Zealand International Student Experience Survey also showed strong support from international students, with 87 percent of those surveyed rating their New Zealand experience positively. That’s an excellent result and something to celebrate.
Last year, the Government launched the International Education Going for Growth Plan, and I am really pleased that this work is tracking well. ENZ has been focusing its promotional efforts on markets with the highest potential for growth while continuing to maintain New Zealand’s strong presence and reputation for high-quality education in other markets. This work continues as ENZ enters its next planning cycle.
While Chief Executive, I feel extremely privileged to have joined three Prime Minister-led delegations, championing New Zealand’s unique education offering in Grow markets including China, India and Viet Nam. Another highlight was travelling to Beijing last year for the China Annual Conference and Expo for International Education (CACIE), at which New Zealand had the distinction of being the Country of Honour.
I have deeply valued being part of the ENZ team and my overall reflection is one of immense gratitude. It has been an absolute career highlight for me and an incredible experience made possible by the great people of this organisation.
I would like to end by acknowledging and thanking everyone in the sector who works so hard to grow international education and its value to New Zealand.
I know 2026 will be another exciting year and I wish you success ahead.
Hei te tau tītoki,
Amanda Malu

2026 New Zealand School Scholarships launched in Viet Nam
Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) launched the New Zealand Schools Scholarships (NZSS) 2026 programme, recording the highest level of participation since the programme’s inception in 2019.
A total of 56 New Zealand secondary schools and 55 Vietnamese education agents have participated in NZSS 2026, reflecting strong education provider and market confidence in the programme.
Launched on 5 January, the programme will have applications close on 22 March 2026, with 56 scholarships available across a diverse range of state, private, single-sex and co-educational schools, offering NCEA, Cambridge or IB curricula.
To grow awareness and interest in the scholarships and New Zealand’s school study options, ENZ delivered a series of New Zealand School Scholarships information sessions in collaboration with six education agencies and one partner school in Viet Nam. This was in addition to two public webinars livestreamed on a partner media fanpage.
ENZ also strengthened agent capability through a dedicated six-part webinar series for Vietnamese agents, delivered from 3-18 December 2025. The series featured 36 speakers from New Zealand secondary schools, NZQA and SIEBA, and focused on building agent knowledge of the New Zealand school system, regional school offerings, and NZSS promotion guidelines.
The agent webinar series attracted over 160 registrations, with 60-98 agents attending each session, indicating strong engagement across the market. The sessions were designed to equip agents with practical tools to confidently advise parents and students and to support consistent, accurate promotion of NZSS.
ENZ’s Market Manager – Viet Nam, Van Banh said these activities aim to provide prospective school students and their parents clear, consistent information about the NZSS programme and application process.
“With the programme’s record school participation this year, expanded market outreach, and a strong focus on education agent capability-building, NZSS 2026 is a significant step forward to strengthen awareness of New Zealand’s secondary education offering in Viet Nam and support its long-term, sustainable growth.
“It’s fantastic to see a sustained level of commitment and contribution from education providers for this programme, it really highlights the strategic value of the NZSS as a pathway programme to study in New Zealand and underlines the sector’s continued confidence in Viet Nam’s secondary school market,” Van said.

Collectively, participating New Zealand schools have committed an estimated $441,702 NZD in scholarship investment, with each school offering a scholarship valued at 50 percent of the first-year tuition fee.
Since its first launch in 2019, NZSS has awarded nearly 80 scholarships, enabling Vietnamese students to access high-quality secondary education in New Zealand and progress to positive academic and career outcomes. Alumni achievements continue to reinforce NZSS’ reputation as one of the most established and impactful government-backed secondary school scholarship programmes in Viet Nam.

ENZ boosts education agent capability through successful workshops in Viet Nam
Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) delivered two education agent capability workshops in Viet Nam in partnership with education providers.
The workshops, held in Ha Noi on 21 January and Ho Chi Minh City on 23 January were delivered in partnership with Lincoln University, Massey University, Pacific International Hotel Management School (PIHMS), eight LightPath New Zealand Schools, and Navitas (University of Canterbury International College and University of Waikato College).
The invitation-only workshops were offered to 40 key education agents recommended by New Zealand education providers and those actively engaged with ENZ’s activities.
The events were opened by the New Zealand Ambassador to Viet Nam, Caroline Beresford in Ha Noi, and New Zealand Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, Scott James, in Ho Chi Minh City. ENZ’s Regional Director – Asia (excluding China), Ben Burrowes, attended both events virtually.
In addition to institutional updates, the workshops featured external speakers who shared insights on New Zealand’s workforce landscape and digital marketing trends for education.
ENZ’s Market Manager – Viet Nam, Van Banh said the workshops reinforced ENZ’s focus on strengthening education agent capability and supporting the sustainable growth of New Zealand’s international education sector.
“It was valuable to hear from agents that the demand for study in New Zealand remains moderate to strong, with master’s, undergraduate and school programmes identified as top priorities, and business, health and medicine, and education emerging as the most in-demand fields.
“Agents also highlighted the need for more scholarships, clearer job pathways, and continued marketing support, while rating ENZ’s in-market support positively.
“These are all good insights to have for Viet Nam – it helps us better target and promote New Zealand’s education offering to prospective students,” Van said.
ENZ also incorporated interactive activities such as social media challenges and team-based minigames into the workshop programme that helped drive further engagement with the programme and encouraged agents to visit education provider booths.

From the Chief Executive: Momentum building for a strong 2026
Kia ora koutou,
It’s a pleasure to be back as Acting Chief Executive at Education New Zealand to build on the leadership of Amanda Malu.
Delivering on the Government’s International Education Going for Growth Plan is our key focus in 2026. Internally, our annual market planning process is underway. This work helps us decide where to focus our efforts – ensuring we are doing the right thing in the right places at the right time.
An essential part of the market planning is to incorporate insights from the sector and Government agencies. Our sincere appreciation for the insights we have received so far.
The team is getting ready to lead the first ever Sri Lanka Roadshow featuring 19 New Zealand education institutions from 5 to 8 March that aims to strengthen the awareness of the New Zealand education brand and promote our undergraduate offering in the country. You can read more about our integrated promotional campaign in Sri Lanka in this edition of E-News.
Applications remain open for the 2026 funding round of the New Zealand-China Tripartite Partnership Fund, ENZ’s long-standing initiative supporting partnerships between New Zealand and Chinese universities. This year’s round encourages proposals that highlight pathways for student mobility and transnational education alongside research collaboration.
This month, as many of our partners and communities usher in the Lunar New Year, I want to extend warm wishes for a prosperous and energising Year of the Horse. This is an important time across several of our key markets, and a reminder of the strong cultural and people-to-people connections that underpin international education.
Thank you for your continued support and collaboration as we continue to deliver on our shared ambitions for international education in 2026.
Okea ururoatia
Keep striving forward.
Ngā mihi nui,
Linda Sissons
