  • 2026 sector survey coming soon

The annual sector survey is an important way for ENZ to hear from New Zealand international education providers about how we’re doing, which services you value, and where you’d like to see more support.

Last year, your feedback highlighted the value of our offshore events and connections, as well as our insights work. You told us you wanted more transparency and more opportunities to provide feedback through our business planning.

We have worked hard to respond. This has included providing peak bodies with opportunities to check in during the planning process and asking for input on how ENZ's activities can best support the sector.

Your feedback remains critical in helping us improve how we support New Zealand’s international education sector – from our marketing and brand work to our insights and data offerings, to our offshore events and connections.

A survey link will be sent to providers in the coming weeks. Thank you in advance for taking part – we look forward to hearing your views.

  • Malaysian roadshow highlights universities and pathways in New Zealand

The week-long programme showcased New Zealand’s diverse education offerings while enabling meaningful connections between institutions, prospective students, school counsellors, and key government stakeholders.

Spanning three key Malaysian cities – Johor Bahru, Penang and Kuala Lumpur – the roadshow featured a range of targeted activities, from school visits and counsellor networking to an education expo and student-facing events. These activities highlighted New Zealand’s commitment to building long-term education partnerships in Malaysia, supporting student recruitment, and raising awareness of New Zealand as a high-quality and welcoming study destination.

Delivered in partnership with leading agents IDP Malaysia and SUN Education Malaysia, the roadshow brought together eight New Zealand universities and four pathway providers.

A strong focus was placed on school engagement and outreach. Across Johor Bahru and Penang, New Zealand institutions participated in a series of mini school fairs at leading international schools, giving students direct access to information on study options and pathways.

Alongside this, engagement with school counsellors helped strengthen relationships and expand awareness among key influencers. Sessions in Penang and Kuala Lumpur brought together counsellors from international and Chinese Independent Schools for presentations, informal Q&A discussions, and a networking brunch attended by partners such as Pearson and Cambridge. New Zealand High Commissioner His Excellency Mike Walsh joined the brunch, emphasising strong government support for education connections.

In Kuala Lumpur, student recruitment activity culminated in the Study with New Zealand Expo, which attracted around 163 students and parents. The event featured presentations from New Zealand education providers, one-on-one consultations, an academic masterclass from the University of Otago, and alumni sharing sessions – offering students a comprehensive view of studying in New Zealand.

The programme also included participation in the ANZAC Day Dawn Service, which was an opportunity for New Zealand providers to connect around shared values and strengthen community ties.

In Kuala Lumpur, a working meeting was held with MARA (Malaysia’s government scholarship body) to talk about support for MARA-sponsored students. New Zealand institutions shared examples of academic and pastoral care. The meeting was followed by a call to the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, meeting with Prof Dr Zainal Amin Ayub (Deputy Director General of Higher Education Academic & Research), focused on strengthening academic collaboration, expanding research opportunities and exploring potential scholarship opportunities for Malaysian academics and staff.

Ben Burrowes, ENZ Regional Director Asia (excluding China), said the roadshow reinforced the value of in-market engagement.

“Connecting directly with students, counsellors and government partners in Malaysia allows us to showcase the breadth of New Zealand’s education offering while strengthening the relationships that support long-term student pathways.”

Overall, the roadshow demonstrated the strong and growing interest in New Zealand education across the region. By bringing institutions directly to students and stakeholders, it reinforced New Zealand’s reputation for quality education, supportive learning environments, and global opportunities.

Through continued collaboration with partners in Malaysia, ENZ remains committed to strengthening education ties and supporting future student pathways to New Zealand.

  • Introducing Adrian Hirst, ENZ’s new Regional Director – India and South Asia

Can you tell us about your professional background including your current role at ENZ and the work you did prior to joining ENZ?

Growing up in the United Kingdom (Yorkshire stock) I graduated with a Law degree and combined Music major.

After a short time working in London’s financial district, I moved to New Zealand and built my career to date across strategy, analytics, marketing and business development within the telecommunications (before Telecom became Spark) and fast-moving consumer goods industries.

Prior to ENZ, I held several senior positions within Lion New Zealand, building some well-recognised beverage brands and was responsible for the growth agenda of numerous international partnerships. In addition to their high investment developing their people, the significant benefit during this time was my exposure to world class approaches in business strategy, brand marketing and innovation.

What are your thoughts on your time with ENZ so far?

There’s a real energy within ENZ and a strong appetite to seize the growth opportunity for New Zealand’s international education profile and reputation. Through my involvement in the Government’s International Education Going for Growth Plan and shaping key priorities, I’ve had the chance to work closely with the sector and see our shared ambition firsthand.

What stands out is the depth of expertise and belief within ENZ, alongside growing alignment with partners and the momentum from education agents and counsellors across all markets. As we strengthen teams and embed a more integrated approach, I’m certain that we’ll continue to deliver measurable results with greater pace, focus and confidence.

What opportunities and challenges do you see for our sector in India and South Asia?

We have a clear aspiration to accelerate growth and better convert the demand from this region through a more focused approach to activity and placement. We need to build true brand reputation and preference, and the value of a New Zealand education must be recognised beyond those current periods when our competitor destinations are less attractive.

With a strong education offering and clear value proposition, we are well placed to attract high-quality students. Additionally, with ENZ’s new global brand platform, greater brand cohesion and stronger collaboration across NZ Inc agencies is key to maximising our impact.

Outside of work, what do you like to do?

I’ve had a musical upbringing through classical and jazz and still play while now also supporting behind the scenes. I find it hard to pass the piano at home without sitting down – a habit I’m pleased my two daughters have adopted. I’m also an explorer and active relaxer so I enjoy throwing on the trainers and getting out into new areas or planning the next big adventure.

With Adrian moving to New Delhi, India, ENZ is pleased to confirm that Ben Burrowes will take on the role of Regional Director – North and Southeast Asia from early June. Ben will remain based in Singapore.
