    A new format  

    We’re delivering NZIEC 2022 in a virtual format so we can reach as many international education practitioners as possible during this critical time for the industry’s rebuild. The virtual format means we have eliminated participation costs and the prospect of Covid blues for all. Join from the comfort of your favourite workstation! And while it means we won’t be able to connect in-person, we are offering a range of new ways to network and connect during conference – stay tuned for further information following registration!  

    The virtual format means we can offer a wider range of keynote speakers than in our usual two-day in-person format. We hope you’ll enjoy insights from our bumper line-up of ten keynote speakers from a range of industries and perspectives. That’s right, ten!  

    We’re also able to offer content in a more flexible manner. We’ll be delivering content in bite-sized chunks each morning and afternoon during the week (except for Friday afternoon). Don’t worry if you can’t attend a session – all sessions will be recorded and available to view later if you have registered.  

    A varied programme  

    NZIEC 2022’s theme is Towards Recovery: Reflect, Reconnect and Renew. We will be exploring this theme across the conference week; we’ll start by Reflecting on the shared experience we’ve had these past two years, before we focus on Reconnecting New Zealand and then turn to Renewal of our industry for the future.  

    The full programme will launch shortly, but here’s a taste of what we have in store:  

    • On Monday morning, join international students and practitioners as we Reflect on our collective experiences over the past two years. Hear from 2021 New Zealander of the Year, Dr Siouxsie Wiles, about her experiences through the pandemic and her advice for the future. Gain insights from our first-ever international student-led panel as they discuss their experiences during the pandemic – and their hopes and expectations for the future. And join our Board Chair, Steve Maharey, as he provides an update on ENZ’s vision and direction.  

     

    • On Monday afternoon, learn how providers across Aotearoa worked through the pandemic to enhance international student wellbeing – and what lessons this experience provides for our current offering. Pick and choose from a cornucopia of sessions that explore New Zealand’s commitment to manaakitanga, including advice from the New Zealand International Students’ Association.  

     

    • Tuesday sees us shift focus to Reconnect. Join us in the morning for an address from the Minister of Education, Hon Chris Hipkins, when he’ll provide an update on the Government’s strategy for international education. You will have an opportunity to ask questions. After the Minister’s address, get up to speed with updates from a range of New Zealand government agencies.  

     

    • On Tuesday afternoon, we continue our Reconnect focus with a keynote address from New Zealand’s leading trade negotiator, Vangelis Vitalis. He’ll speak about New Zealand’s Trade Recovery Strategy and the role of international education within that. Then take a trip ‘Around the World’ with international market insights from ENZ’s global network and sessions led by industry representatives.  

     

    • On Wednesday morning, the centrepiece of our conference week, we explore how international education relates to Te Ao Māori. Gain perspectives on traditional Māori knowledge and wisdom from our keynote speaker, Sharlene Maoate-Davis, as she explores Te Māramatanga o te Maramataka – or renewed Rongoā perspectives from traditional Māori knowledge and wisdom. Then learn how Te Tiriti is being implemented in practice across the international education sector.  

     

    • On Wednesday afternoon, we turn our attention to global citizenship. A range of industry-led sessions examine the concept and its application. Then be inspired by the journey of Abbas Nazari, who fled Afghanistan as a refugee and found himself aboard the Tampa, before gaining a new home in Aotearoa and eventually travelling to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship. Abbas’ story is a powerful tale of the importance of education – and humanity.  

     

    • And as we aim to shrug off mid-week blues, don’t miss the opportunity to find your Inner Superhero! Tapahia Heke and Pita Mei are a Superhero Dream Team who will amaze with their abilities to read – and draw – the Inner Superhero in any of us. Tune into this session if you want your superhero abilities unleashed.  

     

    • Thursday sees us in search of Renewal with the morning devoted to exploring innovation and diversification in international education. Join us in the morning as we explore the do’s and don’ts of innovation within the international education sector. Melissa Clark-Reynolds, our Renew Keynote speaker will talk about the innovation game and how to beat your organisation’s immune system.  

     

    • On Thursday afternoon, we’ll discuss the challenges and opportunities regarding sustainability and international education. Several industry practitioners will outline the approaches they have embraced to address the sustainability imperative. And René de Monchy will provide insights from the tourism industry that speaks to the challenge of rebuilding while keeping sustainability concerns front of mind.  
       
    • Finally, we ease into Friday morning with a late start and an early finish to wrap up our conference week. Grab a cuppa to join a Kōrero Kawhe with some inspiring New Zealand alumni and hear how they are making their way in the world and improving the lives of their communities. Then join clinical psychologist Nigel Latta as he shares the bare essentials for the rebuild job ahead. Finally, don’t miss our conference wrap, including an announcement as to how we’ll be celebrating 30 years of NZIEC in 2023!

  • Get tips and tools at ENZ’s Seminar Series

    The seminars are being held in mid-March in six locations around the country. The morning and afternoon seminars are self-contained so you can opt to attend one or both. And, you can eat your lunch while watching the launch of the New Zealand School Story!

    Each seminar will be limited to 40 participants so be quick off the mark to register.

    Seminar 1 (9.30am- 11.30am): Personas: Understanding your Audience

    Knowing how your audience think and behave is the most important step in connecting with them. In this session ENZ’s General Manager of Marketing and Channel development, Paul Irwin, and International Brand Manager, Kaylee Butters, will share the New Zealand International Student Personas, which were developed as part of a global research project. We'll introduce you to tools you can use to improve your student recruitment and student experience.

    Lunchtime session

    Launching the New Zealand School Story (12noon – 1.00pm)

    In this lunchtime session we will launch the New Zealand School Story. We'll take you on the journey from the planning through to the development of the final suite of resources – all of which will be available on The Brand Lab. We’ll also suggest ideas as to how you can use this story in your own international marketing activity.

    Bring your own lunch – coffee and tea will be provided.

     

    Seminar 2 (1.30pm- 4.30pm):  Creating Effective Digital Marketing Programmes

    Led by the ENZ digital marketing team, this interactive session will focus on the basics of digital marketing. We'll show you how to develop an effective programme from strategy to set-up, through to launch, evaluation and optimisation. We'll help you to decide where to focus your efforts, using case studies from ENZ's own marketing activity.

  • India webinars for providers and agents

    The industry webinar for New Zealand education providers will offer market updates and insights while exploring innovative ways of engaging with the Indian market. ENZ’s India team, along with local industry experts, will also familiarise New Zealand institutions with why collaborations and partnerships are crucial for success in India.

    The agent webinar will aim to improve the profile, and agent understanding, of the benefits of a New Zealand education. It will provide updates on areas of interest and key initiatives such as New Zealand school products, employment and career pathways and undergraduate university degrees.

    ENZ’s India country manager, Jugnu Roy, said: “We see the agent webinar as a useful way for us to engage with student agent representatives and to empower them with the right knowledge and information to promote New Zealand.”

  • Register for ENZ’s market intelligence webinars for South Korea and Japan

    An ENZ market intelligence webinar for Korea has been organised and registration is now open. It will offer local market updates and insights and share Immigration New Zealand updates.

    Registration is also open for an ENZ market intelligence webinar focusing on the Japanese market. This will include local market updates and insights, 2020 dates and regional engagements and NZQA Amendments to the Code of Practice.

    ENZ’s Director Asia, John Laxon, said the industry webinars will be a great opportunity for New Zealand education providers to receive local in-market intelligence from ENZ staff.

    “This will ensure in-market recruitment efforts are well targeted. Our 2019 webinar series is providing market insights and updates from around the Asia region, taking into account strong industry interest in the 2018 series.”

  • Advertising opportunity for NZ education providers and regional groups in Japan

    The publication is the only one of its kind supported by the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo and Education New Zealand. KBUNSHA distributes 20,000 copies to Japanese schools, universities and education organisations as well as education fairs and seminars.    

    ENZ’s Business Development Manager – Japan, Tomomi Kontani says “New Zealand’s border is now fully open to students from Japan, and interests from students and their parents, schools, and education agents are shifting back from other options.  

    “This is a great opportunity for New Zealand education providers and regional groups to join forces with us to promote New Zealand education to the Japanese public. ENZ Japan is planning to host and participate in various students/business-to-business stakeholder focus events in 2023, and this guidebook will be the main information source we refer to and distribute at these events. Destination marketing plays a key role in student attraction for a market like Japan with a tourism focus and we hope regions can also participate in this special opportunity to introduce their regions and activities.”

    NZIEC 2019 centres on the theme of ‘Navigating our changing world’.  As our education system is reshaped over the coming decade, as international competition continues to intensify, and learner behaviour and technology rapidly evolves, how can we create a distinctive, competitive and valuable education proposition?

    We’ll explore some ideas with our keynote speakers Dr Lisa ColemanGuy Ryan and Chris Gallavin.

    LisaDr Lisa Coleman

    Dr Lisa Coleman is New York University’s Senior Vice President for Global Inclusion and Strategic Innovation, and Chief Diversity Officer, working to promote and build inclusion, diversity and equity initiatives. She previously held a similar role at Harvard University.

    Dr Coleman has spent more than 20 years exploring global inclusion, diversity, innovation and technology. She sits on many national and international boards and is the recipient of numerous awards, recognitions, and honours for excellence in teaching and leadership.

    Dr Coleman is known to be a dynamic speaker and we look forward to hearing her challenge our thinking on everything from unconscious bias to the benefits of workforce diversity.

    Guy is an Edmund Hillary Fellow, was awarded Young New Zealander of the Year in 2015, was a finalist for Most Inspiring Person in the NZ Innovator Awards and has served on boards and strategic groups for business and government. Guy has spoken internationally and at home to more than 25,000 people, including TEDx and World Forums.

    As the founder and CEO of Inspiring Stories, Guy h​as built an impressive track record of programmes and partnerships, supporting more than 7,000 young New Zealanders to build their entrepreneurship and leadership capability.

    Chris GChris Gallavin

    Professor Chris Gallavin is Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Massey University. Before joining Massey, Chris was Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Canterbury.

    As an internationally recognised thought leader on tertiary education, Chris has a Master’s in tertiary management and governance from Melbourne University and has published in the area of university reform.

    In 2018, Chris became an Eisenhower Fellow for New Zealand. His project, ‘The Global University 2.0’ looked at reshaping tertiary education to solve the problems of humanity.

  • ENZ-Enroller partnership looks to maintain capability of schools to host international students

    ENZ is subsidising the cost of Enroller’s digital platform for schools for the remainder of 2021 and 2022. The funding will start with secondary schools.

    “ENZ is aware that international student departments at schools are busier than ever, managing the increased pastoral care needs of students still in New Zealand,” ENZ General Manager – Partnerships & Marketing, Paul Irwin, says.

    A report released by Edified in March showed that international recruitment and marketing in schools is in a state of flux. Due to a lack of travel, schools are relying more than ever on digital marketing – however, support and guidance is needed to support international departments to make the transition to digital.

    “Our aim is to support more schools to continue digital marketing, managing enquiries and applications quickly and easily. This partnership will also help ensure that the schools sector is prepared for when international students return to New Zealand,” Irwin says.

    ENZ and New Zealand company Enroller have worked together before on a research project that was completed in 2019.

    That research indicated Enroller was incredibly useful to both schools and agents. 90 per cent of schools who participated said it was a more efficient way of processing student enrolments, saving them between two and three hours’ of work per student enrolment. Of the education agencies surveyed nearly 70 per cent said that Enroller made it easier to submit and manage applications to NZ schools.

    The next step of that research project will continue with the 2021 partnership.

    “We’re excited to be able to offer additional support to schools and continue the work that ENZ and Enroller began in 2018.” CEO and co-founder of Enroller, Michael Barry, says.

    “The NZ school sector is hurting – It has been a long and uncertain 12 months for many. The extension of this research project will enable multi-tasking international departments, and their education agency partners, the additional digital capability and resource that they need to manage the rebuild of their international student roll, cost-effectively.”

    Representatives from ENZ and Enroller are looking forward to sharing more on the partnership at Enroller’s upcoming virtual roadshow for current Enroller clients. The webinars will take place at 2:00pm on 25 May and 11:30am on 26 May.

    The partnership will see AFS deliver breakout sessions throughout conference as well as two pre-conference workshops exploring the conference theme of Inspiring Global Citizens.

    AFS is a leading global organisation promoting international study, with education and volunteer programmes across 98 countries empowering people of all ages and backgrounds with intercultural knowledge, skills and understanding.

    Grant McPherson, ENZ Chief Executive, said the partnership reflects New Zealand’s vibrant international education ecosystem.

    Pre-conference workshop 1: Global competence in international education: What is it? Why does it matter? How can I foster it?

    This workshop explores the concept of global competence, why it is of growing importance and why your organisation should be engaging with it.

    You will have a chance to participate in experiential activities that enhance intercultural skills. We will discuss strategies for implementing these activities in different settings and identify ways to turn brief experiences into long-lasting learning for your audience.

    Pre-conference workshop 2: High-tech solutions for global competence programmes

    Research shows that merely coming into contact with cultural differences doesn’t develop global competence in students. However, students do develop these skills when taught within a developmental, experiential and holistic framework.

    This workshop offers three frameworks that can provide a foundation for your curriculum to build global competence in both inbound and outbound students.
