New Year brings new resources for international students
The ENZ team has been undertaking thorough research to address the big question on every international student’s mind: how much does it really cost to study and live in New Zealand?
After talking to students and seeking feedback about their experiences, ENZ has compiled a Cost of Living page.
This will be a centralised source of information for students that addresses the subject with clarity and transparency, setting realistic expectations on what they will need to budget for.
The page covers different budgets for a range of study options, noting the varying tuition fees depending on type of course (English language courses through to postgraduate) location and length of study.
Along with links to sites with further information on immigration and accommodation, the page also acknowledges that a typical student lifestyle goes beyond the bare necessities, and outlines everyday expenses in order to help students gain a comprehensive picture.
Of course, the cost of living is just one area of interest of prospective students – ENZ has also created a “Quick Facts” page where students can find 10 key reasons why New Zealand is the ultimate study destination.

Japan and New Zealand celebrate long education partnership
To acknowledge the 25th anniversary of the first school visits by four Japanese schools, ENZ partnered with Air New Zealand and Tourism New Zealand to host a reception in January, thanking the schools for their continued support of New Zealand. The event received positive media interest in Japan and resulted in almost 30 articles.
The event was opened by a powerful kapa haka performance by local group Nga Hau E Wha to showcase Māori language and culture.

Misa Pitt, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, said Māori language and culture has been a popular subject for school trips to New Zealand.The event was opened by a powerful kapa haka performance by local group Nga Hau E Wha to showcase Māori language and culture.
“I learned that Yokohama Senior High School has its own kapa haka group,” she said.
After the performance, Misa officially welcomed the guests before Stephen Payton, New Zealand Ambassador to Japan, and awarded the school representatives a certificate of appreciation, signed by ENZ CE Grant McPherson. They also received plaques and airline tickets from Clovis Peryer, General Manager of Air New Zealand Japan.
Both Ambassador Payton and Clovis emphasised that New Zealand is a safe and welcoming environment for international students, with Misa adding that support starts from a government level.
“I explained our code of practice for the care of international students, assuring them that New Zealand has a robust support system for the well-being of students,” said Misa.
Ambassador Payton also noted that both the upcoming Rugby World Cup and 2020 Tokyo Olympics are opportunities to further promote an education exchange between the two countries.
“We look forward to continue working closely with the awarded schools to promote New Zealand as a study destination,” said Misa.

Swedish students experience New Zealand at ACG
ACG has partnered with a number of private Swedish high schools as part of a sister-school project, which saw a group of Swedish students and teachers land in Auckland in mid-February for a New Zealand study experience.
The Swedish students are from the Swedish IT High Schools in Helsingborg, Gotheborg and Uppsala. During their three weeks in Auckland, the students have divided their time between ACG Senior College and ACG Yoobee School of Design – exploring practical study and pathway opportunities.
As well as experiencing the daily life of an Auckland student, the Swedes have also enjoyed a variety of activities, including day trips to Waiheke Island and Tiri Tiri Matangi Island.
Evelina Friman, from Gothenburg has enjoyed her experience, and said she would definitely recommend New Zealand to other students.
“The city, diversity and people are amazing. The teachers and the schools that we attended were great as well. The locals are very friendly and make you feel like part of the community.”
“I enjoyed ACG Yoobee School of Design the most – to have the opportunity to film in such beautiful nature is a blessing.”
Each year through a programme called Atlas, the Swedish government provides funding to high schools looking to establish international links with schools from around the world.
ACG’s Director of Marketing, International, Kim Harase, half Swedish herself, was quick to respond.
“For ACG, this is a great opportunity to develop an exchange with like-minded students and teachers from a country that shares many values with New Zealand, including a love of nature, respect for individuality and a commitment to interaction with the world,” said Kim.
Last year, ACG invited a group of Swedish teachers to Auckland and together developed the project to send the first Swedish students to ACG. Further visits from Swedish teachers and principals in 2016 saw interest grow in New Zealand as a study destination.
Olga Elli, ENZ’s Education Marketing Manager – Europe, said teachers and students in Sweden know New Zealand for its quality education system and lifestyle balance.
“Many Europeans view New Zealand as a place to learn both in and out of the classroom. The ‘adventure’ of study in New Zealand is what drives many Scandinavians to come here,” said Olga.
The students will head back to Sweden at the end of this week, but ACG is already planning to reunite them with their new Kiwi friends.
“The long-term plan is for New Zealand students and teachers to go to Sweden as part of a genuine two-way exchange,” said Kim.
“We are delighted with the experience and look forward to further expand the collaboration.”

ACG opens new International Welcome Centre
The centre opened at ACG’s Pathway Campus on Queen Street just two months ago and has already attracted lots of interest.
ACG Director of Marketing, International, Kim Harase, said the centre is open to anyone interested in exploring study opportunities at ACG.
“One family arrived in the country from Malaysia last week and came straight from the airport to talk to us about the right educational pathway for their son,” said Kim.
“We were there to provide personalised information to the family, organise campus tours of ACG vocational colleges, and enrol the young man into his chosen hospitality management course.”
The centre is open every day, and is manned by staff who speak multiple languages.
Kim said education is one of the largest investments and toughest decisions a parent will make, and they need to trust their chosen provider.
“We have a friendly and knowledgeable team to talk to each visitor about their background and goals and can help tailor an educational pathway that matches their needs and expectations,” said Kim.
“We want to provide the best possible experience to our customers – especially when their decision involves sending their child to New Zealand.”

NZQA consults on publishing statutory action
This is a move towards greater transparency and accountability.
Publishing this information would provide domestic and international students and the wider public with more complete and accurate information on any regulatory decisions made by NZQA in relation to the activities of a non-university tertiary education organisation or a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016 (the Code).
Feedback from stakeholders will be analysed before NZQA provides a summary of findings and relevant decisions in June 2017.

New Zealand universities launch foundation programme with Malaysian college
Students enrolled in the new FCertNZ Foundation Programme will first undergo a one-year foundation course at KYSIC’s KYS Business School (KYSB) in Melaka before progressing to a three-year (or more) undergraduate degree in New Zealand. The foundation programme offers a variety of courses in humanities, commerce, sciences, engineering and health sciences.
The programme builds on an agreement signed in 2015 between KYSIC and the University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington and the University of Waikato.
Datuk Kamaruddin, Chief Executive of KYSB and alumnus of Victoria University of Wellington, said the programme aims to create better educational opportunities for Malaysian students.
“KYS has always been at the forefront of quality education in Malaysia and the FCertNZ Foundation Programme kick-starts another chapter in our international education strategy.
“Through this new partnership with the universities in New Zealand, we hope that our students will continue to be exposed to high-quality education and gain valuable international experiences that can eventually help them meet the demands of both the local and global economy’s needs,” he said.
John Laxon, ENZ’s Regional Director for South, South East Asia & the Middle East, said the new foundation programme will provide a seamless pathway for Malaysian students to further their studies in New Zealand.

Dr Jason Fox is a self-described “modern day wizard-rogue,” author and leadership adviser, who uses his expertise in motivation design to show leaders how to unlock new ideas and move beyond the status-quo in order to remain relevant.
At NZIEC, Jason will discuss how to ‘Lead an International Education Quest’.
“I'm very much looking forward to joining you at NZIEC this August,” says Jason.
“Nearly everything in the international education industry is changing, and faster than ever before. To build for the future, we need something different. It’s time to lead a quest.”
Sam Mackay, ENZ Strategic Projects Manager says Jason is sure to stimulate some interesting thoughts and discussions over the course of the conference, and will be delivering this year’s opening keynote as well as the closing address.
“This means Jason will be engaging with delegates over the course of the conference, and will be on hand to draw everything together after two days of discussions and debate,” says Sam.
“You won’t want to book an early flight!”
We’ll have more keynote and plenary speaker announcements to make before registrations open in May. NZIEC 2017 will be held at SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland on 22 and 23 August.

Crowdsource your NZIEC 2017 experience
Alongside the usual presentations, workshops and panel discussions, we’re introducing crowdsource cafés.
Crowdsource cafés are designed to harness the collective intelligence of the group. Rather than listening to ‘a sage on the stage’, these interactive sessions will see you working with others to brainstorm and problem solve.
“Crowdsource cafés are a neat way to explore the breadth and depth of experience and insights from professionals across our industry,” says Sam Mackay, ENZ Strategic Projects Manager.
“You’ll connect with other delegates, share challenges, learn what others are doing, and come away with new ideas and inspiration you can implement.”
There’s a crowdsource café for school delegates to share international marketing tips, and another for all delegates to explore emerging trends and developments.
“To make the most of these sessions, come prepared to share your insights, tips and best practice with fellow participants,” says Sam.
"We’ll also be announcing three new session formats in the lead-up to August. Stay tuned!"

ENZ engages with Vietnamese media

Alumni are the strongest way to promote a study destination in an authentic and believable way.
The event was hosted by ENZ Viet Nam and included a 90-minute Q&A with New Zealand Ambassador to Viet Nam, Wendy Matthews, and two New Zealand alumni.
The panellists answered questions from the media who sought to understand the New Zealand education system and its advantages over other popular markets such as the US, Singapore and Japan.
Tam Le, ENZ Marketing & Strategic Relations Manager, said the many questions reflected Viet Nam’s growing interest in New Zealand as a study destination.
“There’s typically been low awareness of New Zealand and its educational offering in Viet Nam, but with an increasing demand for international education, more and more people are looking beyond the traditional markets such as the US, UK, Australia and Singapore.
“Workshops are an engaging way to create awareness of the quality of New Zealand education, especially the world rankings of its ‘public’ institutions – because in Viet Nam, ‘public’ schools are associated with low quality.”
The event generated strong interest from media in Viet Nam’s capital, resulting in coverage in VietNamNet, VNExpress, Dantri and Zing, a top online magazine for Vietnamese teenagers and young adults, which created a “10 reasons to study in New Zealand” video.
The New Zealand Embassy also livestreamed the event on its Facebook page, with more than 15,000 views.

ENZ’s Viet Nam team is already busy building on relationships from the workshop. Two days after the event, Tam partnered with a local academic influencer to host a livestream interview. The video has had more than 11,000 views, and explored New Zealand’s teaching and research methodology, friendly and open-minded learning environment and support systems for international students.

Kiwi spotlight at NAFSA opening plenary
The Opening Plenary is the largest event on the NAFSA programme. Due to the size of the audience, and the seniority of delegates (half of NAFSA attendees are senior/executive-level professionals), it was an unparalleled opportunity to profile New Zealand as an innovative and creative education destination.
ENZ’s sponsorship provided New Zealand with a four-minute speaking slot, the opportunity to show a short video and to provide a giveaway on each of the conference centre seats.
Demonstrating New Zealand’s vibrant cultural diversity was Elena, a classical violinist who performed powerful pieces of music to welcome conference delegates as they entered the hall. Woven through the music was audio of kapa haka and a voiceover telling the story of Elena’s Māori and European cultural and creative heritage. Playing simultaneously was an animation of three graphics by Wellington design duo Fay & Walter illustrating Elena’s journey.
Weta Workshop’s Sir Richard Taylor then took to the stage to emphasise New Zealand’s unique strengths as a study destination to the global audience.
“I was delighted to speak on behalf of New Zealand’s unique educational institutions,” said Sir Richard.
“I spoke of New Zealand’s position in the Asia-Pacific region, the strength of our universities and institutes of technology and polytechnics, and how receiving a New Zealand education helps foster the skills students need to compete in a global market place.
“New Zealand relies on being an open and international country, we thrive on diversity and welcome international students to New Zealand as an opportunity to cross pollinate ideas. We see the benefits of such an approach at Weta Workshop where multiple teams, made up of people from around the world, collaborate every day.”
