  • From forums to fashion shows – building the Viet Nam relationship

    With the dust now settled on the ministerial visit, we can look back at three productive days of strategic dialogue with a fashion focus. ENZ’s General Manager, International, Peter Bull, took the opportunity to accompany the Minister on the visit.

    “Viet Nam has proved to be a vibrant partner. The visit really re-affirmed the opportunities that exist for New Zealand institutions and for both our governments, to work even more closely together for mutual benefit and to grow the market in both directions,” said Peter.

    While the Minister’s presence at the fashion show grabbed headlines, it was the concept of the fashion collaboration that demonstrated true flair and innovation. Ten teams of one Vietnamese and one New Zealand student collaborated online for three months to design fusion concepts. The teams from Otago Polytechnic, Massey University, Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, AUT University, Ho Chi Minh City School of Architecture, and Ha Noi University of Industrial Arts only came together a few days ahead of the fashion show to finalise their designs.

    Minister Joyce was the guest of honour at the fashion show which did a great job of showcasing New Zealand’s creative education sector, and highlighting the growing ties between institutions in both countries. The Minister fronted a pre-show press conference alongside New Zealand officials and institutions, attracting substantial coverage on some of Viet Nam’s most popular media channels.

    Enjoying the two-hour show, the Minister tweeted:  “Excellent fashion, ex. Promotion 4 NZ in Vietnam. Congrats students @AUTuni @OtagoPolytec @MasseyUni @WhitecliffeArt”

    Nicola Luey from AUT University and Chu Khanh Vy from Hanoi’s University of Industrial Fine Arts won first prize worth NZ$2,000.

    Minister Joyce’s wider education programme sought to strengthen the New Zealand-Viet Nam relationship and profile New Zealand’s education offering. In meetings with the Vietnamese government including with his counterpart, Minister Luan, and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, it was clear that education is viewed as a key pillar of the collegial relationship between our two countries. The significant role of Zealand institutions in growing ties and realising opportunities was also very apparent.

    The visit included the signing of the renewed New Zealand-Viet Nam Education Cooperation Arrangement and a ceremony celebrating the graduation of students from the Bachelor of Computing and Information Sciences programme jointly delivered by AUT University and the University of Science, Viet Nam National University, Ho Chi Minh City.

    The visit coincided with the celebration of 40 years of friendship and diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and New Zealand, providing an opportunity to showcase our commitment to the relationship as well as our education expertise.

  • Hamilton accelerates industry growth

    Feedback both on- and off-line was positive, with 94 percent of attendees rating the conference good to excellent. Of those, 52 percent rated the conference very good and one in five rated it excellent. And 83 percent of delegates agreed or strongly agreed that NZIEC 2015 added value to their organisation.

  • The New Zealand China Sister Schools Fund is open!

    The next round of the fund is now open. Applications must be in by midnight on 12 October 2015.

    The fund is open to all New Zealand schools that are Code of Practice signatories.* Grants of approximately $2,500 per school will be awarded to successful schools to establish new sister school relationships, or to strengthen existing relationships, with a focus on sister cities/provinces.

    All applications must be emailed to ebd@enz.govt.nz

    Those eligible are New Zealand;

    • Primary schools

    • Intermediate schools

    • Secondary schools

    • Composite schools

    • School clusters

    Schools must be signatories to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.

  • Telling the story in Thailand

    Sixteen journalists from local print, TV, radio and online outlets heard from New Zealand’s Ambassador to Thailand, His Excellency Reuben Levermore, who underscored the long-standing relationships between the two countries, in education, trade and other areas. “Nearly 4,000 Thais study each year in New Zealand, benefiting from the high-quality education and great lifestyle provided for international students.”

    The Ambassador also emphasised that New Zealand communities are diverse, welcoming and tolerant, and that, as a young country, New Zealand is renowned for its creativity and innovation.  “We are world class in many areas, including sport, tourism and education,” said the Ambassador.

    ENZ’s Marketing and Strategic Relations Manager in Thailand, Chortip Pramoolpol, highlighted New Zealand’s strengths in niche courses such as agribusiness; food and textiles; hospitality; early childhood studies; film, animation, visual effects and gaming; cybersecurity; and sports management.

    “These are examples of newer disciplines which are less established in other parts of the world but represent emerging job markets with good career prospects,” said Chortip

    Other benefits of choosing New Zealand as an education destination promoted at the event included domestic fees for doctoral students, and the ability for these students to work full-time while studying and then gain open post-study work visas.

    The media conference was also designed to promote the New Zealand Education Fair which was held over the weekend in Bangkok, by leveraging experiences of alumni and those connected to study experiences in New Zealand.

    The panel included a celebrity host who was a New Zealand alumnus; a parent whose son is currently studying an undergraduate degree in New Zealand; and another alumnus who is now working in a multinational oil and gas company as a Country IT Manager.

  • ENZ Board members honoured

    In its third year, the Women of Influence Programme is designed to identify, recognise and celebrate the 100 most influential women shaping New Zealand across 10 categories: Arts and Culture, Board and Management, Business Enterprise, Community and Not for Profit, Diversity, Global, Innovation, Public Policy and Rural.

    Victoria won the Arts and Culture award for her role in injecting new life in to Bats Theatre and for her part in influencing, as Chief Executive of screen production company the Gibson Group, displays and exhibitions at a range of museums and public venues around the world. Eleven women were nominated for this award.

    Frances won the Innovation award for being at the forefront of change in education, and for her vision and passion for learning, particularly in the areas of science, technology and discovery. You will all be familiar with Frances’ cutting edge learning facility, The Mind Lab by Unitec. Eight women were nominated in this category.

    That we have leaders and influencers of such calibre on our board is something to be celebrated. The breadth and depth of experience Frances and Victoria bring to our organisation is invaluable, and the contribution they make to our international education industry is enormously beneficial.

  • How big are our product and service exports?

    As part of the valuation process, a short survey will be sent to relevant members of New Zealand’s international education industry this week.

    The survey aims to understand more about the companies and organisations that gain export revenues from providing education products and services offshore, including the type of activities they engage in and the associated revenues. Revenue figures will remain confidential to the researchers and will be aggregated so that it will not be possible to associate any particular entity with the published data.

    The survey will enable ENZ to update our 2012 estimate of the value of education exports at $104 million. We encourage industry who receive the survey email to take part in this important data gathering exercise so that the value of your business is accurately reflected.

    Exports include the offshore delivery of qualifications, consulting, publishing, education technology and industry training. Exporters of education services comprise education organisations and companies, as well as an increasing number of companies whose primary business is not education, but which undertake training overseas.

  • ENZ Emirates Airline promotion launches in Saudi Arabia

    This promotion builds on a successful #YourSummerinNZ competition, which concluded on 5 June with the award of six prizes to study in New Zealand. The winners receive full scholarships to study English language at one of the six sponsoring New Zealand English language schools for up to six weeks, including return flights to New Zealand and accommodation.

    The Emirates Airline promotional discount offer is on flights to New Zealand, booked from 1 June until 31 August, departing from Riyadh, Jeddah, Medinah, and Dammam. To redeem the offer, students need to use an infographic posted on ENZ’s Arabic Twitter page – @nzeducationsa.

    “We are delighted to partner with Emirates Airline in promoting New Zealand as the premium destination for English-language students,” says John Laxon, ENZ’s Middle East Regional Director.

    “Saudi students can now fly direct from Dubai to New Zealand via Emirates, and enter New Zealand visa-free when studying for up to 12 weeks.”

    The flight promotion, and competition, are targeted to students looking at summer abroad study, given the longer summer holiday period in 2016.

    New Zealand Ambassador, Hamish MacMaster, announced the Saudi #YourSummerinNZ scholarship winners: Abdullah Al Fifi (New Zealand Language Centres), Thamer Albugmi (Worldwide School of English), Ali Al Shahrani (Academic Colleges Group), Mohammed AlQabbaa (Southern Lakes English Language College), Majed Alzahrani (Languages International), and Fahad Alfifi (The Campbell Institute).

    “The #YourSummerinNZ competition was a great success,” says Ambassador MacMaster.

    “More than 3,000 entrants promoted New Zealand on ENZ’s dedicated Arabic-language Twitter channel – @nzeducationsa. ENZ now has more than 38,000 followers on its Twitter page, where students can find out how great it is to study in New Zealand.”

  • A new group of US Kiwi Ambassadors

    Welcome Kiwi Ambassadors!

    It was so difficult that ENZ decided the group of runners-up would be offered the chance to be ‘Honorary’ Kiwi Ambassadors. This meant they could still share their semester experience in New Zealand through the Study in New Zealand Instagram.

    The #StudyinNZ page will therefore shortly welcome the next round of Kiwi Ambassadors, the 13 award recipients, and a further group of 29 Honorary Kiwi Ambassadors when they arrive in New Zealand in July.

    The Instagram page has quickly become a hit with the US students and has already attracted almost 15,000 followers. Certainly, as you can see if you view the page, the current Kiwi Ambassadors have had no trouble finding picturesque opportunities during their semester in New Zealand! Images of nature, food, sunsets and wildlife predominate.

    ENZ’s staff in the US, Amy Rutherford and Alanna Dick, have found the #StudyinNZ Instagram page a powerful tool in promoting New Zealand as an education destination.

    “When I suggest students and study abroad advisors follow Study In New Zealand on Instagram, the conversation about studying abroad in New Zealand continues long after the study fair or campus visit is over,” says Alanna.

    “It’s one thing me telling students what it’s like studying in New Zealand, it’s another when the students can see it in real time for themselves!”

    More about the Awards

    Education New Zealand partnered with the eight New Zealand universities and six institutes of technology and polytechnics to offer these awards as part of their support of the Institute of International Education’s Generation Study Abroad initiative, and its aim of doubling the number of US students who study abroad.

    For Semester Two this year, ENZ awarded four US students the $2,000 Generation Study Abroad Travel Award to cover their airfare. The students are attending the University of Auckland, the University of Otago, and EcoQuest, a Private Training Establishment.

    The universities awarded nine US students New Zealand Universities Excellence Awards (NZUEAs) which cover $500 of tuition fees and other associated costs. The students come from universities all over the US, from University of Florida to California Polytechnic State University.

     

  • Japanese Game On English Rugby clinic a big success

    The rugby clinic was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in partnership with ENZ as an offshore programme of GOE Rugby.

    GOE Rugby was launched by Prime Ministers Shinzō Abe and John Key in July 2014 in response to the Japanese government’s goal to improve the English language skills, and boost the sporting capacity of Japan’s young people, in preparation for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympics.     Two coaches were selected from GOE’s partner rugby unions to lead the clinic: John Haggart, International High Performance Manager, Canterbury Rugby Football Union; and Clayton McMillan, Head Coach, Bay of Plenty Rugby Football Union.

    The two coaches jointly led the Tokyo programme. This included a rugby clinic at Aoyama Elementary School, a press conference, and a reception hosted by New Zealand Ambassador Mark Sinclair and held at the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo. Among the 150 guests were Panasonic head coach Robbie Deans, Japanese rugby legend Demi Sakata, sports-related government officials including former Vice Minister Shinichi Yamanaka, and business leaders including Adidas Japan president Paul Hardisty.

    John Haggart and Clayton McMillan then travelled to Sapporo and Fukuoka respectively to lead the rugby clinic, supported by the host city and rugby club. More than 100 pupils attended the clinic in Fukuoka and 234 pupils in Sapporo.  

    “The feedback was very positive and it was a great occasion for ENZ to showcase the GOE programme on the ground for students to consider New Zealand as a study destination,” said Misa Pitt, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager in Japan.

    ENZ has plans for other GOE initiatives for later in the year.

    “We are picking up great momentum for GOE activities here in Japan,” said Misa. “We will have more updates to share in the coming months.”
