  • Visa advice for international graduates

Catherine Albiston, Registrar of the IAA, says that any students seeking immigration advice about their options to stay in New Zealand following their studies must use an Immigration Adviser licensed by the IAA, or an exempt person such as a New Zealand lawyer.

“If students need personalised immigration help, it is important they only seek it from people who can legally give it,” says Catherine.

“Holding an immigration adviser licence means the individual has met competency standards and must be professional.”

The IAA’s register of licensed immigration advisers can be found here.

“Visa applicants need to be honest with Immigration New Zealand and declare any help received when completing a visa application form,” says Catherine.

“If applicants are not honest, the visa application may be declined and Immigration New Zealand may refuse future visa applications.”

For more information, visit the IAA’s website or email info@iaa.govt.nz

  • New Zealand China Mayoral Forum

Education New Zealand is helping Local Government New Zealand to organise the NZ-China Mayoral Forum in Wellington at the end of the year.

ENZ’s Regional Project Manager Sarah Gauthier said this year’s forum builds on the success of the first forum held in Xiamen, China, in 2015, which produced tangible outcomes for mayors from both countries.

The 2017 forum theme is ‘Sustainable economies – balancing economic development with the environment’. Discussion topics will focus on tourism, education and primary industries.

There will be a range of mayoral delegations attending the 2017 forum, with a special business forum and session being planned for business delegates on 3 December.

ENZ is assisting with the education sector discussions, which will highlight the value of the education partnership between China and New Zealand.

“We are eager to share how New Zealand exposes its international students to innovative ways of teaching and learning, while equipping them with the skills they need for career-ready and entrepreneurial futures,” said Sarah.

Have something special to showcase at the forum?

She said the forum is a great platform to promote innovative programmes, products and services that showcase New Zealand’s expertise in the education sector. Visit the LGNZ forum website for information about sponsorship opportunities and to download the sponsorship prospectus.

    Business forum and matching meeting

The theme for the business-matching session is ‘Smart business for smart cities’. Meetings will be held on Sunday 3 December. Visit this link to view the forum programme and this link to register for the business-matching meeting sessions.

The forum will be held on 3-4 December 2017 at Te Papa, Wellington. For more information, contact Sarah at sarah.gauthier@enz.govt.nz.

  • Meet Up at NZIEC

Meet Up sessions are informal opportunities to connect with delegates during the networking breaks on particular issues or topics.

How do they work? Simply suggest a topic or topics you’d like to discuss. We’ll collate the responses and coordinate the Meet Up topics and times. It will be over to you to strike up the connections and the conversations.

If you have a burning topic you’d like to talk to others about, let us know. Perhaps it’s homestay management, using technology in back of house operations or you’re in a sole charge position and want to connect with colleagues in a similar situation.

Whatever the topic, just let us know and we’ll do our best to include it.

We’ll publish a list of Meet Up sessions through the Conference App when it is launched next week.

Email your Meet Up topic suggestions to nziec@verve.co.nz

Please note: Registration closes on Friday 11 August. If you have not yet registered for NZIEC, please secure your place as soon as possible by visiting the NZIEC website.

  • eVisas and VisaView coming soon

From 7 December, eVisas (passport-free applications and label-less visas) will be available for many students who apply online, joining the one thousand applicants who are applying for visas electronically every week through Immigration ONLINE.

At the same time, New Zealand education providers will become able to use Immigration New Zealand’s VisaView service to check whether a non-New Zealand student can study with them.

    eVisas

INZ will extend eVisas to the following online applicants:

    • People applying in New Zealand to renew their Work, Visitor and Student visas (except Chinese nationals)*

    • People from visa-waiver countries applying outside New Zealand for a Work, Visitor or Student visa (citizens of visa-waiver countries do not need a visa to travel to New Zealand as a tourist for less than three months).

These applicants will not have to send in their passports to INZ when they submit their applications online. The visa holder will receive their visa approval notification through their Immigration ONLINE account, and may print their visa record from their account. This notification contains visa details, including travel and other visa conditions.

Visa holders are advised to carry their visa approval notification when they travel. Online systems allow airlines to confirm that a person can travel to New Zealand, but the visa approval notification can be used as an additional confirmation if requested.

Further information about eVisas is available at www.immigration.govt.nz/eVisas

    Visa transfer to new passports

Because visa details are linked to passports, people who obtain a new passport after being granted their visa need to transfer their visa details to their new passport. There is potentially a greater risk with eVisas that visa holders may neglect to transfer visa details to their new passports. For explanation of how to transfer visa details, see here

    VisaView

VisaView is an online visa enquiry system that is being extended to education providers from 7 December 2015. It will enable providers to check whether a non-New Zealand citizen can study with them.

VisaView is currently used by employers to check migrants’ eligibility to work in New Zealand.

    What happens next?

We will email education providers when VisaView is launched, with a link inviting them to register for a VisaView account. A detailed user guide will be available.

There will be some opportunities for education providers to attend face to face training sessions in a few centres during December and early February.

    * INZ is liaising with Chinese authorities and plans to implement eVisas for Chinese nationals during 2016.

  • MyStudy NZ WeChat mini programme gets a refresh

MyStudy NZ is our intelligent matching tool which matches prospective students to courses and institutions in New Zealand based on a set of questions and areas of interest. It can be found on www.studyinnewzealand.govt.nz for our western markets.

However, for our China market who predominantly use WeChat, we developed a mini programme for them in November 2018.

The new version of the mini programme continues the original smart matching, but is more user-friendly and personalised, making it easy for students to obtain official information about application.

How is 2.0 better than 1.0? We believe it’s better in eight different ways:

    1. Social sharing enabled – Prospective students who come across their dream school can now share it to a WeChat friend or group chat immediately. The recipient can open the mini programme and view the details of the school as well.
    2. One-click authorisation – Students won’t have to fill in all the details to become a member anymore. With one click, prospective students can authorise their WeChat accounts to become registered MyStudy NZ members.
    3. Clear living costs displayed – Once prospective students get a match, they can expand and view the annual living costs in a pop-up window.
    4. You can see the latest content with added filter – Without registering, students can view the latest OA articles and filter based on views or posting date.
    5. UX (user experience) optimisation – Users can now choose paths when entering the mini programme.
    6. Complete UI (user interface) update – To remain consistent with the refreshed ‘I am New’ brand.
    7. New notifications – Push notifications will be sent to remind students to register, do course matching, bookmark favourite schools and talk to them.
    8. Speed optimisation and no more errors – We have done some coding optimisations and upgraded our server so the mini programme will load faster and users shouldn’t receive any more error messages.

  • Applications are open for the Europe and Latin America Engagement Fund

The aim of this funding is to support engagement activities with education agents from Europe, Brazil and Colombia. New Zealand institutions are welcome to submit proposals and apply for up to $3000 per project. We will fund up to 15 projects that focus on engaging with agents from Europe, Brazil and Colombia.

ENZ’s Market Development Manager – Europe, Adina Stoye, said ENZ has a strong and loyal network of agents in Europe, especially Germany and Italy.

They are keen for support and engagement with New Zealand institutions, and welcome opportunities for events and promotional activities. This initiative is a wonderful opportunity for New Zealand education providers to promote their education offering through building education agent networks.”

Proposed activities should be completed during the second half of 2023 and have firm goals and outcomes in place. Examples of activities are a scholarship campaign, contribution to bringing an agent to New Zealand for a famil, or supporting a trip to attend an event organised by agents.

ENZ’s Director of Engagement – Latin America, Javiera Visedo said education agents in Latin America are keen to learn more about what a New Zealand education has to offer, with students excited at the prospect of studying here. Reconnecting with New Zealand education providers is a top priority for them.”

Applications are open to New Zealand institutions only. This includes New Zealand education providers such as universities, Private Training Establishments (PTEs), English Language Schools (ELS), regional economic development agencies, schools, and peak bodies. • Applications are open until Friday 12 May at 5pm and applicants will be notified of the outcome on Friday 9 June.

  • Teaching the world about New Zealand

To better market New Zealand as a study destination, we’ve added hundreds of high-resolution images, videos, infographics and case studies to the New Zealand Story toolkit.

What is the New Zealand story?

New Zealand Story is an initiative that brings together expertise from the private sector and Government agencies, including NZTE, Tourism New Zealand, Education New Zealand (ENZ) and more. Our purpose is to help define the things that make us unique as a country and give us a framework to share our New Zealand story with the world. Our toolkit is a big part of this. The New Zealand Story business toolkit resources are consistent with and support the resources available to you in ENZ’s Brand Lab.

    How the toolkit can help

When people choose to study overseas, they leave behind their friends, their family and their comfort zone. So when deciding on a place to go, they’ll want somewhere that’s not only tolerant of foreigners, but welcoming and friendly. The toolkit is packed with resources that highlight our open hearts and open minds.

Chances are they’ll also be keen to experience a new culture and way of life. There’s nowhere quite like New Zealand for a unique cultural experience, and again, the toolkit has a huge range of images, videos and case studies that showcase our open spaces and can connect your brand with our country’s great lifestyle and rich culture.

Lastly, it’s important to remember that they’re coming to study. New Zealand is world-class in many areas, including sports, tourism and education. Combine that with our reputation for creativity, innovation and ingenuity and we really are an ideal destination for those looking to kick start their career. Our toolkit features more than just pretty landscapes – it’s also packed with resources that highlight our expertise in these areas.

Craft your own New Zealand story

Stories bring ideas to life in a way that makes them both memorable and shareable. And whether you’re a school, a tertiary institution or another education provider altogether, that’s exactly what you need to stand out from the crowd. The toolkit can help you tell your story in an engaging and compelling way.
