  • Clarifying visa process for students sees launch of video guide

    ENZ General Manager Marketing and Communications Geoff Bilbrough said the video would support those considering study in New Zealand. 

    “As we get closer to the end of the year and the peak period for student visa applications it was important to get this information out early and help the students considering New Zealand understand what is involved in the application process.”

    The video outlines what applicants can do to make sure their application is able to be processed as quickly as possible. These include: 

    • checking the student visa information sheet on the INZ website to make sure a good quality application is submitted that includes all the evidence and supporting documents needed to process the application

    • demonstrating that applicants can comfortably afford to study in New Zealand. New Zealand has a thorough funds assessment and INZ looks for genuine sources of funds that are credible and can be verified. If INZ cannot verify funds or is not satisfied that any verification would be genuine, then the application will be declined.  


    It aims to make sure the students understand the requirements before applying.

    INZ receives the highest volumes of student visa applications between October and March. Applications generally take longer to be decided during this peak period, so it is important that anyone who is wanting to come to New Zealand to study next year applies early. 

    “If you want to study in New Zealand next year, INZ recommend applying three months before you intend to travel. This gives you the best chance of having your application decided in time,” Bilbrough said. 

    The video is available on Study with New Zealand the official Government website giving information for students considering studying in New Zealand. ENZ will also be promoting the video on social media in all key markets and making it available to education agents.

  • ENZ staffing changes in Washington, D.C

    On Friday 27 September Amy Rutherford, our Regional Director – Americas, the Middle East, and Europe and Counsellor (Education), will be finishing after eleven and a half years at ENZ. 

    Amy started at ENZ in 2013 as an International Market Manager for China. She has been in Washington, D.C. since 2018, having been in Los Angeles prior to that as ENZ’s Director of Education, North America. Prior to working for ENZ, Amy studied in the United States as an undergraduate student and worked for the University of Otago in the North American and European markets, as well as the New Zealand Resident Director for a US study abroad provider, the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA).

    “As a colleague of Amy’s in the International team, I’ve greatly appreciated Amy’s knowledge and expertise and I know she has built of wide network of trusted colleagues across New Zealand’s international education sector,” Acting General Manager Ben Burrowes said.

    Ben added, “on behalf of ENZ, it is my privilege to congratulate Amy on an outstanding tenure at our organisation and we wish her well for the next step in her professional career”. 

    ENZ’s Regional Director - Americas, Middle East and Europe, Amy Rutherford (centre) will be finishing with ENZ on Friday 27 September. Associate Director of Engagement – North America, Natalie Lulia (left), will be acting in the role from Monday 30 November.

    We are delighted that Natalie Lulia, currently Associate Director of Engagement – North America, will step into the role of Acting Regional Director - Americas, Middle East and Europe on Monday 30 September. 

    "Natalie has been a fantastic addition to ENZ and steps into the role at a particularly important time as we implement our 2024 – 2027 business strategy,” Mr Burrowes said. 

    Natalie first joined ENZ in October 2023. Prior to ENZ, she was Director – Māori for the Centres of Asia-Pacific Excellence (CAPE) and Strategic Advisor, International Indigenous Development at Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato - University of Waikato. There, she led a team passionate about Māori business capability, Global Citizenship Education and raising awareness to establish meaningful relationships in the Asia-Pacific, particularly with indigenous communities. 

  • ENZ seeks Expressions of Interest to grow the Thai schools’ sector

    In 2023, enrolments from Thailand were the fifth largest for New Zealand’s schools with most enrolments coming from students living in Bangkok. Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) is now looking to grow this market by collaborating with New Zealand schools and regional Thai education agents to build partnerships with schools in cities outside the capital city (referred to as ‘second tier’ cities).

    The initiative, called the Thailand Second Tier City Promotion is planned to run in 2025-2026. ENZ is currently seeking feedback from New Zealand schools to measure interest in participating in the promotion and is running a survey until Tuesday 30 October 2024 for interested schools. 

    Collaborative school clusters are invited to participate in the initiative which will form sister school partnerships with regional Thai schools. Each cluster should consist of at least three schools.

    Through these partnerships, a wide range of study options for Thai students and schools will be available. This may include short-term 4-week school immersion programmes, 1 to 2 terms or full year study programmes, teacher trainings, virtual interaction, online curriculum-based collaborative projects etc. 

    ENZ’s Acting General Manager - International, Mr Ben Burrowes, said that over the years New Zealand has built a very strong reputation as a high-quality education destination particularly amongst students from Bangkok. He says that this helped the market rebound significantly post-Covid. 

    “With the international education market in Bangkok now highly saturated, ENZ sees this promotion as a good opportunity to help schools reach an untapped market in regions across Thailand. 

    “Through working with high performing regional education agencies and in collaboration with New Zealand schools, our initiative aims to support the development of sister school partnerships in each province,” said Ben.  

    “This is a strategic move to raise the profile of New Zealand’s school sector and grow interests from a new pool of prospective students and their parents,” added Ben.

  • EOIs sought for 2025 PTE and ITP Roadshow in the Philippines

    As part of Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao’s (ENZ) ongoing efforts to expand the Philippines market for Private Training Establishments (PTE) and Te Pūkenga (Business Divisions – ITP) sub-sectors, ENZ will be leading a roadshow from 1–10 May 2025. This roadshow will include an agent seminar and three student fairs with three days allocated to each location in Manila, Bacolod and Cebu.  

    The roadshow’s objectives are to increase awareness of New Zealand’s education offerings, particularly in the PTE and ITP sub-sectors, and to support the growth of inbound student mobility. Additionally, the roadshow seeks to strengthen existing relationships between agents and institutions. 

    The agent seminar will bring together PTE and ITP representatives and education agents while the student fairs will offer prospective students and their families an opportunity to meet with sector representatives and gather detailed information about studying in New Zealand.  

    In addition to the fairs and seminar, the programme will feature a school roadshow and a counsellors' dinner. The school roadshow will provide information sessions for secondary school students while the counsellors’ dinner will be an opportunity for participants to meet with school counsellors.

  • ENZ showcases New Zealand’s commitment to sustainability in education and UN SDGs in India

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) hosted a vibrant Sustainability Carnival on 14 November at the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi to round off ENZ’s #SustainableTomorrow campaign that was designed to highlight New Zealand’s commitment to SDGs and sustainability in education.

    The event showcased New Zealand university course offerings and officially launched ENZ’s Sustainability Guide, a comprehensive resource profiling course offerings in sustainability at New Zealand universities and the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST).

    The event saw over 150 attendees, including representatives from five New Zealand universities, three Indian universities, and students, parents, and teachers from New Delhi’s international schools. The Sustainable Tomorrow campaign was launched as a comprehensive digital and social campaign to spotlight sustainability within the educational landscape. Through diverse activities, and partnerships, the campaign highlighted New Zealand's commitment to embedding sustainable practices in education. It reached 82,266 accounts via the New Zealand in India Instagram page, engaged 2,935 accounts and saw 165 profile visitors.

    As part of the campaign, ENZ launched a digital poster design competition for Indian high school students. Centred around the Innovating for a Sustainable Future theme, the competition aimed to raise awareness of key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 7 (Affordable and clean energy), Goal 9 (Industry, innovation, and infrastructure), Goal 12 (Responsible consumption and production), and Goal 13 (Climate action). The winning posters were unveiled and recognised at the Sustainability Carnival, which also featured a series of other exciting activities, including street plays performed by students on the importance of sustainability, as well as a croquet match with the New Zealand High Commissioner to India Patrick Rata.

    ENZ’s Director of Engagement, India and East Asia, Jugnu Roy, said the campaign did well to spotlight New Zealand’s strong credentials in sustainability stewardship to secondary school students, teachers and parents in India.

    “The campaign was a fantastic opportunity to highlight New Zealand universities’ sustainability leadership, particularly their top global ranking for sustainability stewardship in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024.

    “The launch of the ENZ Sustainability Guide that promoted course offerings related to UN SDGs at New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga really drove home the message about New Zealand’s commitment to a sustainable future that’s visible through our wide range of sustainability-focused education offerings,” Jugnu said.

    Asia 

    While financially strained institutions in the U.S and UK reassess their models, Asia’s universities are reshaping global higher education, leveraging innovation and collaboration to address economic challenges. The shifting dynamics carry profound implications for how knowledge is produced, shared, and valued, raising the question of how it will ultimately redefine higher education worldwide.  

    Australia 

    The Department of Education in Australia has released six new guides and an overall framework to support innovative practice in international student engagement, covering areas such as mental wellbeing, community engagement, developing innovative programmes and supporting with accommodation. 

    Mexico 

    Study travel agents in Mexico are expecting a diversification of outbound trends in the year, while it is hoped that business to the traditional top destination of Canada will settle after a challenging year of policy changes and visa issues, according to delegates at the recent ST Alphe Secondary Focus Mexico City event. 

    New Zealand 

    News Editor of StudyTravel Network, Matthew Knott, shares comments from Executive Directors of English New Zealand and SIEBA, Kim Renner and John van der Zwan, along with Keri Ramirez, Managing Direcotr of Studymove on New Zealand’s international education recovery.     Sri Lanka 

    Perth-based Curtin University has officially launched a new branch campus in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo. After establishing similar facilities in Singapore, Malaysia, the UAE, and Mauritius, Curtin University Colombo is the institution’s fifth global campus.   

  • New Zealand universities continue to top world sustainability rankings

    The 2025 QS World University Rankings: Sustainability were released yesterday, highlighting that New Zealand’s universities continue to lead the way when it comes to environmental, social and governance sustainability. The rankings by QS Quacquarelli Symonds are in their third year and measure an institution’s ability to tackle the world’s greatest sustainability challenges.  

    New Zealand came out top country overall based on the average score of our universities for Environmental Impact and Governance, in addition to the Equality and Environmental Education lenses (among countries with at least eight universities ranked). This is good news for universities as they look to attract students to their campuses especially as QS Destination: Australia and New Zealand report 2024, found that 63% of students interested in studying in New Zealand say environmental sustainability was very or extremely important. 

    Ben Sowter, QS Vice President, said: “New Zealand’s higher education sector has long been a world leader in sustainability and this year’s results show yet again that the country punches above its weight, surpassing many of its international competitors. 

    “However, this year’s results also show that universities in other countries are improving their sustainability efforts, with New Zealand’s institutions advised to enhance their offers in areas of governance, employability and outcomes and health and wellbeing.” 

    The 2025 rankings showcase over 1,740 universities from 107 countries and territories. This reflects significant growth from last year’s rankings which included 1,397 institutions across 95 locations and more than 1,000 institutions since the inaugural rankings in 2022.  

    Jessica Turner, CEO of QS said that “The QS Sustainability Rankings provide a critical benchmarking tool for universities to evaluate their progress across areas such as knowledge exchange, equality, environmental impact, and governance. As more institutions engage with this framework, the increasing competitiveness of the ranking reflects the growing commitment globally to advancing sustainability in higher education.”

  • Update from Immigration New Zealand

    Visa processing update

    • From 01 January to 31 March 2025, student visas have been processed in 12 days (two and a half weeks) on average, compared to 24 days (five weeks) for the same period in 2024.

    • Currently, international student visas are being decided in 10 days (two weeks) on average. 

    • The tertiary sector’s mid-year intake is almost upon us, and students need to apply for their visas now.

    • Latest visa processing times can be found on the INZ website: Student visa wait times | Immigration New Zealand.

    Reminders from Immigration New Zealand

    The conditions of a student visa state that the visa holder must attend the programme of study at all times, at the place of study endorsed on the visa (unless there are genuine reasons for absences), and that they must make satisfactory progress in the programme of study.

    Immigration New Zealand (INZ) receive a number of applications from students in New Zealand, who have poor attendance and/or progress, without any explanation of why.

    If students do have poor attendance or progress, it is recommended that an explanation for this is provided up front with the application to avoid the need for INZ to request further information. This will prevent any delays in processing.

    If you are refunding an international student’s fees, then the ToE form should be filled out, regardless of whether or not the student’s visa has been sighted by the provider.

    China’s Ministry of Education has approved a slew of new transnational educational partnerships, as the country aims to grow its TNE enrolments from 800,000 to eight million. 

    Global 

    Students around the world are more confident about career prospects but are increasingly concerned about a range of other issues, including student diversity and their quality of life, according to the latest Global Student Satisfaction (GSS) Report 2025. 

    United Kingdom 

    According to a new report from the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for International Students, International students contribute more than £41.9 billion annually to the UK economy, with their impact felt in local communities. 

    Australia 

    The Australian Centre for Student Equity and Success (ACSES) has released a new report calling for a complete shift in how Australia’s higher education system addresses equity and access issues. 

    United States of America  

    An estimated 30% to 40% fewer international students are expected on American college campuses in the fall of 2025, compared with trends in the 2024-2025 academic year, according to NAFSA: Association of International Educators. 

  • Building on momentum from 2025 for steady growth in 2026

    Kia ora koutou, 

    As 2025 draws to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve achieved together, and to thank you for the incredible support you’ve shown to grow international education in New Zealand. 

    This year has been one of big wins: 

    • New Zealand now has 83,535 international students enrolled between January and August, a 14% increase on last year, already surpassing 2024’s total. 

    • Education-related travel exports hit $4.52 billion, making international education among New Zealand’s top 10 exports. 

    • 87% of international students rated their experience in the country positively, with 77% of New Zealanders agreeing that international education benefits the country. 

    These results are a testament to the strength of our partnerships and the commitment of everyone in this sector. Thank you for working with us on our Go-to-Market Plans, we are excited to keep building on this momentum in 2026 as we deliver on the International Education Going for Growth Plan. 

    And it’s not just our sector shining, New Zealand continues to stand out globally on several counts, which make us even more appealing as a high-quality study destination 

    We are globally ranked: 

    • fifth for overall higher education quality (QS World University Rankings 2026) 

    • second on the Sustainable Trade Index 

    • third-most peaceful country in the world (Global Peace Index 2025) 

    • first for work-life balance (Global Life Work Balance Index 2025) 

    • tenth for overall prosperity and wellbeing (Legatum Prosperity Index 2025). 

    Finally, I want to acknowledge Amanda’s outstanding leadership as ENZ Chief Executive. Amanda has strengthened relationships across government and the sector, represented New Zealand internationally, and delivered an organisational reset that sets ENZ up for the future.  

    We’re immensely grateful for her contribution and wish her every success in her next role. 

    The ENZ Board has started recruiting for a new Chief Executive, and we’re working closely with Amanda and the leadership team to ensure a smooth transition. In the meantime, business continues as usual, and our team remains focused on achieving the growth goals we have set for international education.
