  • IEGF success key to Chile market

    Vital English’s success in Chile started in mid-2012 when ENZ staff introduced Vital English to STEP, an institute associated with the University of Santo Tomas that regularly tenders for Chilean Government bids in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

    Through this introduction, Vital English was able to identify an opportunity for developing an ESOL product based on an existing Vital English course that would be suitable for upskilling Chilean primary and secondary school teachers.

    Just a few months later, Vital English and STEP were involved in a Chilean Government pilot involving 380 teachers. The pilot saw teachers improve their Test of English for International Communication scores by one or more levels on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in three months.

    Given that success, the Chilean Government sought to extend the pilot to a 12 month course in 2013 involving 4000 teachers.

    Vital English was under pressure to rapidly develop new content to meet the needs of this bid and attend a number of meetings with Chilean Government officials. While both STEP and Vital English could recognise the scope of the opportunity, neither party had sufficient resources available to meet these requirements within the required timeframe.

    “Fortunately, the IEGF was announced”, says Adrian. “Winning an IEGF has provided enough of a financial boost to allow Vital English to develop the required content and get to market quickly to maximise the opportunity.

    “The result of being able to respond quickly to the requirements of the Chilean Government has, without question, strengthened our position there and accelerated our ability to grow the market. It has led to Vital English being invited to participate in a further bid for providing ESL to 1000 secondary school students.

    “Vital English is now participating in three different Chilean Government bids worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. More importantly, the lessons learned from the partnerships formed, have opened the door to a new business model that Vital English is well positioned to maximise.”

  • NZQA brochures now in Spanish and Japanese

    The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has developed a suite of language translations to promote NCEA study in New Zealand. Alongside the English language version, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai and German translations are available. The translations feature NCEA student success stories and the future study plans of these students.

  • Govt announcements welcomed

    The new initiatives included allowing more English language students studying at high-quality providers to work part-time, providing full-time work rights during all scheduled holidays to international students who take a course of one academic year or more, and giving unlimited work rights to international PhD and Masters by research students. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will also no longer grant visas to students seeking to enrol at the few providers in Category 4, the lowest status granted by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

    Education New Zealand (ENZ) has shared this news with agents and overseas media, with the announcements receiving good coverage via Facebook page postings, media coverage and via informing and engaging agents.

    Grant McPherson, ENZ Chief Executive, said last week: “Changes to government policy settings and regulations are incredibly important in supporting your efforts to grow international student numbers – we’ve heard that through the industry survey, the roadshow meetings and the feedback ENZ staff have taken on board at many meetings around the country.

    “These announcements are great news for our international competitiveness, but they’re not the end of the story. We will continue to work closely with agencies on initiatives to help grow our industry and we encourage you to stay in touch with us about the opportunities you see to further remove barriers to growth.”

  • New China Team Members

    171013 felixFelix Ye, formerly Director of International Students at Auckland Grammar School, has just begun work as our Education Manager based at the New Zealand Consulate-General in Guangzhou.  “Felix is perfect for this role”, says Alex.  “Having spent the past 11 years in a variety of international education positions in both public and private institutions, Felix comes to us with strong and proven credentials and networks.”  Additionally, “Felix originally came to New Zealand as an international student, and has a valuable innate understanding of the kinds of drivers and factors that go into the decision to go overseas to study,” says Alex.  “Felix understands ‘Why New Zealand?’ – and can clearly articulate this to prospective students”. 

    “I am very excited, both personally and professionally, to have this opportunity to work for ENZ in China and to grow our links with the South”, says Felix.  “Guangzhou is my hometown, and there is a lot of potential for New Zealand here.  Guangdong is already the number 1 source province for Chinese students in New Zealand, and with an ENZ presence now here – we are well-placed to develop the education relationship even further”.

    Sam Mackay, another familiar face to many, will soon be joining the China Team, based with Alex, Li Zhi, and Rosemary An at the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing.

    “Sam will be joining us as Senior Education Manager from the end of November, with responsibility for the government-to-government/policy side of the bilateral education relationship; as well as on growing education business”, says Alex. 

    Sam has a long history in international education, both at the government and institution level.  Sam has previously worked on the China relationship at our Ministry of Education; and has studied Mandarin in Beijing, where he also worked at the New Zealand Centre at Peking University.  “Sam comes to us with a robust international education and policy skillset and a solid understanding of both New Zealand and China”.

  • Merry Christmas from ENZ

    2013 had its usual mix of challenges and successes, but as an industry we’ve still got plenty of reasons to be optimistic. Trends such as the projected growth in international education worldwide, the rapidly increasing demand for international education among the growing middle class in Asia and the relatively untapped opportunities for New Zealand education programmes to be delivered offshore (not to mention the possibilities for significant growth in student recruitment) all bode well for a brighter future.

    The launch of the New Zealand Education Story and its associated customisable marketing assets allow us all to tell a shared story as one. This, combined with the new website studyinnewzealand.com, will boost our marketing efforts enormously, helping to drive more inquiries through to your institutions.

    I trust the products and services that Education New Zealand (ENZ) developed and delivered in 2013 to support your growth are useful and making a difference. There are more industry support products and services to come in 2014, and these will be delivered alongside the most important collaborative project we’ve initiated this year: the Strategic Roadmaps programme.

    The New Zealand International Education Conference held in November was one of the highlights for me this year. As well as enjoying the chance to meet and talk with many of you, I also got a real sense of the collaboration that’s going on in our industry.

  • Growth Fund applications open

    The IEGF aims to support innovative projects that go beyond ‘business as usual’ – for instance this funding can help accelerate your market expansion plans, develop offshore partnerships or build a new product or channel to market. 

    There has been some fine-tuning of criteria and the selection process, based on feedback from earlier rounds. ENZ Business Development Manager, Adele Bryant, says the new form is designed to guide applicants easily through the process, and in particular help you explain how a project will meet key selection criteria -- including level of innovation, expected commercial return, scalability, value for money and extent of collaboration both on and offshore. 

    Success so far

    Since the fund was piloted in April 2013, 41 projects and 31 institutions and education exporters have received ‘matched project funding’ of between $10,000 and $50,000.  

    Some good results have been achieved already from projects funded in that first April 2013 round.   Wellington-based company Software Education has launched five new courses in Singapore and signed six new partnerships with US organisations, while Kiwa Digital, of Auckland, has used its funding to close international contracts valued at $386,000.

    Victoria University of Wellington used IEGF funding to develop a niche marketing campaign for its high value, postgraduate law programme in Germany and Southeast Asia. The university says without IEGF funding it would have taken longer for the university to gain the market penetration it wanted in Singapore, Thailand and Germany.  The results are an 18% increase in offers of places over 2013 and new relationships with institutions that will help feed the student pipeline into the future.

    Online Education, a start-up company based in Hamilton has developed Code Avengers to teach computer programming.  The product can be used in classroom settings around the world as well as in the potentially huge US home school market.  While still in the development phase the company has used its IEGF funds to “accelerate the speed of many tasks from promotion to IP protection to product development”.  While revenue is small it is growing quickly with an 800% increase over the last year, of which some 80% comes from export sales. The company is now having the product translated into Spanish and Dutch and is in negotiation with overseas distributors as it moves quickly to capitalise on its improved international profile. 

  • APEC card: streamline your travel

    The APEC Business Travel Card provides holders with streamlined access to 20 participating Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies. This includes many important student recruitment markets, such as China, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Philippines and Vietnam. 

    As a cardholder, you will enjoy: 

    • express immigration clearance through special APEC lanes on arrival and departure

    • no requirement to apply for visas or entry permits

    • multiple entry to participating countries for a stay of at least 59 days on each visit. 

    The card is valid for three years and is based on a unique electronic pre-clearance system. The card is used in conjunction with your passport, so you need to apply for a new card when you receive a new passport.

  • Beyond the Summit: the world visits New Zealand education

    The Summit is co-hosted by New Zealand, the OECD and Education International. It draws together representatives of the highest achieving and fastest improving education systems in the world, as measured by the OECD through the Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA) survey. Invited attendees include Ministers of Education, teacher leaders, and heads of national teachers’ unions.  

    The theme for the 2014 Summit is ‘Excellence, Equity and Inclusiveness – High quality teaching for all’.

    On either side of the Summit, the delegations have opportunity for bilateral meetings with government leaders and officials in Wellington and also for visits to peak bodies and education providers. These include a chance to see how education is delivered on an urban marae in Auckland, and how Christchurch schools and early childhood education centres are responding to the post-quake challenge.

    Government officials across various agencies are working together to support the visits by the international delegations, which include education leaders from Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, Poland, Singapore, the Netherlands, UK, USA, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Sweden. There are also invited observers coming from Niue, Samoa, Tokelau, Tonga, Vanuatu, Cook Islands and Solomon Islands.

  • New Zealand universities feature in Chinese TV series

    All About Going Abroad is a television series that introduces overseas university education to its international audience. The series covers aspects of student and academic life, including learning facilities, social and sporting activities, key programmes and city life. Four to five episodes will be produced as a result of the crew’s visit to New Zealand. 

    The opportunity was facilitated by Education New Zealand’s China team and offered to all New Zealand universities, with the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington deciding to get involved. 

    Alex Grace, ENZ’s Regional Director for Greater China, says the series is a great way to raise New Zealand’s profile with a large audience.

    “China is New Zealand’s leading source country for international students but, despite this, New Zealand is still quite poorly understood as an education destination. We’re delighted our institutions were able to take up this opportunity to introduce themselves and their offering in much greater depth.”

    International Channel Shanghai has a global audience of 9 million. The New Zealand-focused series is due to be broadcast in October.
