  • NZQA update for Thai students

    The Council of University Presidents Thailand has agreed to support continuation of the NCEA Level 2 - Matthayom 6 qualifications recognition arrangement, whereby Thai universities will continue to use the equivalence criteria to make their admission decisions.

    This arrangement provides two options for students to meet requirements for NCEA Level 2 - Matthayom 6 equivalency. Students who meet either of these options are eligible to apply for study at a Thai university under the Thai University Central Admission System.

    The criteria for these options can be found on the NZQA website, which should be used to advise students on their programme planning and subject choices.

  • Bringing ideas to life in China

    Ideas to Life took place at the University of Auckland Innovation Institute in Hangzhou – an area known as the Silicon Valley of China for its reputation as a leading innovation and technology hub.

    The conference showcased the University of Auckland’s work in several areas relevant to the Chinese market. These included digital health, high value nutrition, light metals research, advanced materials and manufacturing, and clinical trials and drug development particularly in oncology. 

    Leading education experts from China and New Zealand also attended an education industry-specific session at the conference. Organised by the University of Auckland English Language Academy, the presentations provided an overview of international education in New Zealand, updates on programmes including customised services for groups of students, and shared expertise in academic learning and research.

    Julie Haskell, Director at the English Language Academy, said the session provided an opportunity for collaboration, networking, and knowledge sharing between academics, agencies and university officials from both countries.

    “The education day provided an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the Institute and the opportunities offered by the English Language Academy.

    “We look forward to hosting future events at the Innovation Institute in Hangzhou.”

  • Japan and New Zealand celebrate education milestone

    Last week, ENZ hosted a reception in Tokyo to celebrate the 20th and 30th anniversaries of three Japanese schools’ first New Zealand visits and to thank them for their continued support of New Zealand.

    Over the last three decades, the three Japanese schools – Josogakuin Junior High School, Hikarigaokajoshi High School, Tokorozawa Kita High School – have sent more than 4,000 students to New Zealand for academic study and school excursion programmes.

    Misa Kitaoka, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, said the schools shared some fantastic feedback about New Zealand as a study destination.

    “The principal of Tokorozawa High School said the importance that New Zealand education places on acquiring future skills and global competency was one of the reasons why it resonated with him as a destination for his school’s study abroad programme,” said Misa.

    “His school has also had annual visits to the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University, which he felt was an excellent opportunity for Japanese students to experience New Zealand’s tertiary-level programme.”

    The reception opened with a powerful kapa haka performance by local group Nga Hau E Wha, showcasing Māori language and culture.

    The New Zealand Ambassador to Japan, Stephen Payton, presented the schools with certificates of appreciation, signed by ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson.

    Air New Zealand was also on hand for the celebration, gifting plaques and airline tickets to New Zealand for teachers at the schools.

    Misa said in the lead up to the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, hosted by Japan, the Japanese government is accelerating its plans for internationalisation.

    “I see a growing opportunity for ENZ to promote the quality of New Zealand’s universities, especially the direct pathway to the Bachelor’s degree programme available for Japanese high school students.”

  • Innovative new search tool on SiNZ

    Following feedback from New Zealand institutions, ENZ sought to offer better tools to institutions to tell their story on the site, with better search capabilities to help students find study options faster and more intuitively.

    More than one million potential students visited SiNZ in 2017, with the website referring nearly 200,000 of them to New Zealand institutions.

    Lucia Alarcon, ENZ’s International Digital Programme Manager, said by giving students a faster, more intuitive way to find study options, the innovative new search tool makes it easier for institutions to recruit high-quality international students. 

    “As well as providing better search listings for students, the new functionality offers institutions more advanced ways of telling their story such as improved photo galleries and separate profiles for their departments,” said Lucia. 

    “We now offer a powerful and comprehensive search tool to help students find the course or institutions they’re looking for, as well as offering industry more advanced features to promote their education institutions.”

    The key new features include:

    • A one-stop-shop profile for institutions to showcase their proposition, courses, scholarships and other key information
    • More visual content, with a better display of features and photos
    • Showcasing each campus separately, with words and photos
    • Separate profiles for each institution department
    • More contact details for each campus and department
    • Better search listings – listed alphabetically with filters to refine searches.

  • China's priorities for education reform

    Key work for 2018 includes:

    • Releasing comprehensive gaokao reform plans for Beijing, Tianjin, Shandong and Hainan, with guidance on gaokao testing subjects for various majors offered at undergraduate level in Chinese universities. For example, by 2020, Beijing will be using a new gaokao system. Students will be tested on the compulsory subjects of Chinese, maths and foreign languages, with students then free to choose three additional subjects from political sciences, history, geography, physics, chemistry and biology.
    • Writing the draft of early childhood education law, conducting research announcing the Opinion on ECE Deep Reform and Development to improve the wages and supply of ECE teachers, and urge local government to provide funds to the ECE sector
    • Developing a five-year plan on textbook developments for primary and middle school students.

    Adele Bryant, ENZ’s Regional Director North Asia, said while these plans are only for students in China, New Zealand providers that host Chinese students should still be aware of them.

    “China is moving ahead with its education reform in response to concerns of parents and students around the gaokao and about quality in the early childhood sector. 

    “New Zealand education providers and exporters should be aware of the developments in such a key market and whether it creates opportunities for direct entry of students, teacher training or provision in the early childhood sector and in education publishing,” she said.

  • Kiwi coaches train Tokyo students

    The GOE Rugby Demo Day was held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Oizumi High School. It was hosted by ENZ in partnership with Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education and Street Rugby Alliance, a foundation led by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, dedicated to the development of rugby in conjunction with Japan’s hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 2019.

    Two coaches from the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union came to Tokyo to lead the rugby training: Mike Rogers, CEO of Bay of Plenty Rugby Union and Wayne Brill, International Programme Manager and Campaign Manager for the Bay of Plenty Steamers. Together, they led the enthusiastic high school players in an intensive rugby training session on the field. 

    The coaches also participated in a series of media interviews including a local TV station and called on government agencies such as Japan Rugby Football Union and the Sports Agency.   

    Misa Kitaoka, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, said the event was a huge success, and contributed enormously to New Zealand-Japan education relations.

    “Demo Day provided an excellent opportunity for our government partners to see the actual delivery of the programme and see the quality of New Zealand’s education and sports offerings,” said Misa.

    “I can definitely see the heightened interest in rugby in Japan, and it was great timing for ENZ to promote the GOE programme together with Bay of Plenty Rugby Union, an experienced rugby provider that also works closely with Education Tauranga.” 

    “Students were so enthusiastic that we finished the programme by high-fiving each other and saying ‘kia ora’!” 

    GOE Rugby was launched in 2014 in response to the Japanese government’s goal to improve the English language skills and sporting capacity of Japan’s young people, in preparation for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympics.

    ENZ looks forward to promoting New Zealand’s sports and English learning package in Japan by leveraging New Zealand’s strong country branding via the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

  • SIEBA connects schools and agents

    The SIEBA forum sought to meet the growing demand to place international students around New Zealand by enabling introductions between Auckland-based education agents and New Zealand schools outside of Auckland.

    Richard Kyle, ENZ Business Development Manager, said the event was a huge success with the buzz of new relationships being formed throughout the morning.

    “Representatives from schools, regional bodies and agencies had the chance to meet and learn about each other’s work and objectives.

    “We congratulate SIEBA on its continued focus to add value and growth to the school sector.”   

    SIEBA has received positive feedback from agents, who were pleased to grow their understanding of different schools and different regions, and how they might better match students to both.

    SIEBA member schools in attendance were equally pleased and welcomed the opportunity to meet more New Zealand-based agents.

    “As a new Director, I found this event invaluable for making contact with fellow Directors and a wide variety of local agents,” said James Elder, Thames High School.

    “Once again, the SIEBA team are leading from the front and it was a wonderful initiative to be able to connect with agents and other school representatives,” said Megan McKenzie, Southland Girls’ High School.

  • NZTC brings ECE teaching to Malaysia

    NZTC’s three-year Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) degree has been approved for delivery in Malaysia through Kolej Dika – a respected specialist early childhood teacher education provider.

    NZTC Chief Executive Selena Fox said this makes NZTC the first New Zealand tertiary education provider to have a degree accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education.

    “This achievement is of international importance for New Zealand and Malaysia, celebrating innovation, shared commitment to excellence and creating opportunity for a specialised degree in Malaysia for teachers of young children,” said Ms Fox.

    NZTC is New Zealand’s largest provider of early childhood teacher education.

    Malaysian diploma students can now upgrade to NZTC’s internationally recognised and accredited degree to teach, educate and care for children and families.

    “NZTC has been working on establishing educational relationships in Malaysia for a number of years and it will be exciting to see these relationships grow to a new level in the years ahead,” said Fox.

    The Bachelor of Education (ECE) is also the first New Zealand qualification to be approved for National Higher Education Fund loans for Malaysian students.
