  • Wellington honours international student success

    The annual event, hosted by economic development agency WellingtonNZ, recognises the contributions international students make to the region through their academic, creative, sporting, community and online pursuits.

    The awards also celebrate local students who support their international peers, international graduates and locals who give international students opportunities in the workplace.

    Wellington mayor Andy Foster presented awards to 18 international students and graduates from tertiary institutions and high schools in the region.

    Victoria University of Wellington doctoral student Thoa Thi Thu Hoang, from Vietnam, won an academic excellence award for her dissertation, which produced a method for prioritising buildings in the city for seismic retrofit and analysed the residential red zone programme in Christchurch.

    Ehsan Hazaveh of Iran took out a creativity award for his doctoral research at Victoria University of Wellington on using photography to tell the stories of refugees in Wellington. One of Ehsan’s solo exhibitions was opened by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery, while another was part of the World Refugee Day Festival.

    Malaysian student Nurul Izzati – who plays basketball, netball, frisbee, futsal, athletics and korfball – took out a sports award. She has represented Victoria University of Wellington in ultimate frisbee and korfball and won gold in the 100 metres and 4 x 100 metres relay events in a Malaysian sports tournament, where she was named sportswoman of the year.

    Wellington Girls’ College student Jasmine Yip, from Hong Kong, was recognised for her contribution to the community as an international student representative, Student Volunteer Army ambassador, charity volunteer and climate change activist.

    Giam Li Heng Ronel was recognised for completing his university entrance programme with UP Education online from Singapore due to border restrictions and mentoring other students along the way.

    The event at The Opera House in Wellington on 9 November 2021 also drew a virtual audience of more than 200 others from 37 cities in 13 countries around the world.

  • Rebuilding New Zealand education’s visibility in China

    Last month, Lillian spent three weeks in New Zealand in what was her first visit to the country as part of her role at Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao.

    The two-pronged purpose of her trip was to provide refreshed marketing insights to education providers in New Zealand and hear from providers on their expectations and the challenges they face when marketing their offering in China.

    Here are Lillian’s takeaways from her visits and interactions in New Zealand –

    Need for storytelling that better highlights New Zealand education’s points of difference

    1. Engaging with education providers and visiting campuses highlighted to me several points of difference for New Zealand education, particularly how it is innovative, how it develops work-ready graduates, as well as how international students are welcomed and valued in New Zealand. Seeing these points of difference in real time made me realise how underrated the New Zealand education story is overseas, and the need to tell that story better. We need to focus on telling a New Zealand education story that is authentic and has concrete examples. A more visual storytelling format would be ideal to deliver the story.
      • Tip: Demonstrate the teaching and student engagement practices your institution delivers using visuals (images or videos).
      • Example: Take photos/videos in the lab, with robotics machines, with the 3D printer, the hands-on experience and student engagement (student hub), self-learning and learning from their peers.

    Visit to Middleton Grange Intermediate School to understand the differences between New Zealand and Chinese classrooms

    Demonstrate outcomes of education programmes via successful alumni stories to promote offering

    1. Chinese parents and students are very outcome driven. Institution or programme rankings remain the key consideration, but other indicators and outcomes are becoming increasingly important, including employability, international recognition, and a life-changing experience.

    Demonstrating the outcome of an education programme by leveraging successful student or alumni stories and testimonials can be a critical in activating ‘word-of-mouth’ promotion that influences the decision-making of prospective students and parents.

    • Tip: Highlight successes or outcomes for students through stories. Degree + good experience = happy alumni story. Parents and students want to know if a qualification from a New Zealand institution will be recognised in China, the world or if it could be a pathway to further study.
    • Example: A Chinese student studied a business degree with a New Zealand tertiary provider and then landed a job at a Fortune 500 company or became an industry leader. Or if a Chinese student studied virtual art in a New Zealand PTE, got a job in Weta Digital, which has worked on recent Chinese blockbuster films. We have seen Chinese media are very interested in interviewing and profiling such students in their publications.

    Consider digital content in local language for marketing impact

    1. Research indicates that more Chinese students do their own research online and make their own decisions when choosing an overseas study destination and institution. So having a digital presence on China’s digital platforms is critical. Digital content in local languages also goes a long way in building brand awareness. If resources allow, exploring multiple channels and interacting with your audience in local languages will help you to gain a major advantage in optimising brand awareness and driving results in student recruitment.
      • Tip: Host Chinese language and China specific channels such as an official WeChat account. We understand it isn’t easy to set one up. If you are unable to set up a WeChat account for any reason or don’t have Chinese-speaking staff, having a Chinese language website is the next best option. Having crucial information online in Chinese helps promote the institution as trustworthy. Parents and students will use the Chinese language website to confirm information, even if they rely heavily on agents or school counsellors.
      • Example: ENZ has been working to optimise our digital presence in China, including with our Chinese language website: studywithnewzealand.cn. We recently revamped the storefront of SWNZ.cn to bolster its localisation, ensuring that from a Chinese user point of view, we can keep them interested and engaged in considering a New Zealand education provider. To ensure our digital presence continues to be fit for purpose, we undertake regular work to update and troubleshoot our platform and content.

  • Mayoral events provide vibrant welcomes to students in their regions

    Last month we shared some of the wonderful images that New Zealand schools, universities, PTEs, Te Pūkenga and English Language Schools shared with ENZ as they welcomed their new students for 2024. This month we are sharing details and images from the Mayoral welcomes that some of our regions have held for their visiting international students. 

    Thank you for adding to our diversity and vibrancy! 

    More than 40 international students were greeted by Whanganui District Council Mayor, Andrew Tripe, at a special Mayoral welcome to the community on Monday 8 April. 

    Speaking to the students from countries including Brazil, South Korea, Japan, Germany, China, India Indonesia, Thailand, and Viet Nam, the Mayor thanked them for choosing Whanganui and adding to the “diversity and vibrancy of our community”. 

    The students attending had enrolled in both secondary schools and tertiary institutions in the district such as Whanganui High School, UCOL Whanganui and the New Zealand International Commercial Pilot Academy. 

    Formal greeting over, the Mayor was rushed by students seeking a special ‘selfie moment’ to share with families and social media.

    Similar levels of excitement were seen in Hamilton where the Mayor of Hamilton, Paula Southgate and local performance groups welcomed approximately 250 new international students to the Waikato region. The welcome event was held at the Pā, University of Waikato and is the first welcome since the Covid-19 pandemic put these events on hold.

    Faymie Li, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao’s Senior Advisor Student Experience said, “I was deeply honoured to witness this significant event and see how we demonstrate manaakitanga to our international students.  

    The diverse cultures we embrace in Aotearoa is truly something to cherish and celebrate. It was wonderful to see so many school students attending the ceremony, offering them a unique student experience they don't typically encounter.” 

    Jiabao Zhao (Boa), a former international student who completed a Bachelor of Management Studies with First Class Honours at the University of Waikato, shared a message of encouragement with the students. Boa’s advice for new students was: to study hard but also “talk to and meet students from outside your country. It’s easy to remain in your comfort zone but that is not the point of studying abroad. Network and build your presence”.

    She also reminded students to take care of both their physical and mental health. There will be challenges but also great opportunities, and her own study and career journey is testament to that. She now works as an International Sales Operation Executive at Prolife Foods Ltd in Hamilton.

    A handful of the 250 students who travelled to the Pā at the University of Waikato, for the international student welcome.

    Also in March, nearly 100 international students received a fine welcome centered on the theme of connection, by Timaru District Mayor, Nigel Bowen. The Timaru District will be home to students from Japan, China, Germany, Thailand, South Korean, Hong Kong, Macau, Fiji, Philippines, Brazil and Poland, and more over the course of this year.     United Kingdom

    UK: student visas down as dependent applications plummet

    The UK Home Office has published data showing a large decline in student dependent applications since new legislation was introduced at the beginning of this year, as well as a fall in student visa applications. 

    Australia

    The Australian government has announced a legislative package with a series of new measures for the country’s international education sector. The measures include a cap on new international student enrolments, a prohibition on education providers holding ownership positions in education agencies, a ban on agent commissions for onshore student transfers, and more stringent oversight of education providers and agents alike.  

    India

    Record immigration is colliding with housing crises across the world

    India Times is reporting that countries like Canada and Australia are reevaluating their immigration policies to address the pressures on housing affordability and sustain economic growth. 

    United States 

    Agents worried over high US visa rejections for African students

    International education actors in Africa are uniting with their US partners and activists to call on the study destination’s government to ‘rethink’ visa policies for African students.

    India has overtaken China as the second-most represented country in the Times Higher Education Asia University rankings 2024, with 91 universities compared with the neighbouring nation’s 86 institutions. 

  • Immigration New Zealand update

    India delegation 

    Alison McDonald, Head of Immigration, joined ENZ Chief Executive Amanda Malu as part of the Prime Minister’s official delegation to India. Celia Coombes, Director Visa at Immigration New Zealand, responsible for the student visa product, joined Amanda and Ben Burrowes in India afterwards where they supported the New Zealand delegation at the Asia Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) and met with the New Zealand Education Representatives in India (NZERI), a group of Indian education agents. 

    “Immigration New Zealand found the trip very valuable and insightful,” says Celia. 

    “Now we are working on how we can continue to support the growth of the education sector, particularly in India which is such an important market for New Zealand, and what needs to be done to support more applications being approved.” 

    New local points of contact in India and China 

    Immigration New Zealand has new Engagement Advisors appointed in New Delhi and Beijing. They will be a local point of contact and working to improve communication within both the education and tourism industry. 

    Visa processing 

    INZ is in a strong position for processing student visas, following initiatives put in place to make our processing more efficient. At the end of March 2025, international student visas were being decided in 10 days (two weeks) on average.  

    On average Te Pūkenga (New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology) applications are being processed within 2.5 weeks, 2 weeks for University applications, 3 weeks for Private Training Establishment applications and 1.5 weeks for school applications.  

    INZ have already decided more than 20,500 student visa applications so far this year, and approved around 18,000 student visa applications (from 1 Jan – 31 March 2025).

  • Hearing students’ voices

    This year five alumni will be joining 20 international students to share their experiences with each other, ENZ and NZ Inc. Participants will be selected from nominations submitted by institutions, and ENZ will send out the nomination criteria and submission form at the end of August.

    Student Voice will provide students and alumni with a platform from which they can share their ideas and air their concerns and an opportunity to take part in the development of an alumni strategy. It is hoped that participation in the event will inspire students to establish their own forums within their student communities.

    The objectives of the event from an ENZ perspective are: to gain a student perspective on the alumni strategy ideas; facilitate communication between the students and NZ Inc agencies; and facilitate connection between alumni and industry, and current international students.

    The outcomes from the Student Voice event will be shared with industry at the New Zealand International Education Conference (NZIEC) at the Student Voice 2013 panel session. Three students and one alumnus will be selected at Student Voice to participate in the conference panel. 

  • Student Voice 2013 a ‘great opportunity’

    Twenty five current and former international students gathered to share their education experiences and to network with other international students.

    Activities kicked off with a scavenger hunt where the teams were given a list of clues and tasks to complete at different locations around the city. The scavenger hunt included a creative photo competition to create content for our social media channels. Photos from the scavenger hunt can be found on our Facebook page.

    During day two of Student Voice, workshops were held to learn more about the pathways students took to study in New Zealand, their education experiences, and their views on what can be done to improve the student experience.

    Participants also fed back on the new, New Zealand Education Story brand, creating their own execution of the brand posters.

    ENZ selected three current international students and one alumnus from the Student Voice group to make up the panel members for the Student Voice 2013 session at the New Zealand International Education Conference. The panel members will share their education pathway experiences and the findings from Student Voice 2013. 

    We are very excited to have such outstanding representatives of New Zealand education joining us.  

  • Auckland Agency Group progresses student well-being initiatives

    AAG Chair Isabel Evans, Director of the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Auckland, says more than 60 per cent of international students currently study in Auckland.

    “The AAG group was established to build cross-agency government leadership in the Auckland region,” she says.

    “We also wanted to ensure that agencies on the ground in Auckland are collaborating effectively.”

    Education members of the AAG include the MOE, Education New Zealand (ENZ), New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and Tertiary Education Commission. Other government agencies include New Zealand Police, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), Immigration New Zealand, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Ministry of Social Development and Office of Ethnic Communities, Waitemata and Auckland District Health Boards and the Human Rights Commission. Auckland economic growth agency ATEED also plays an important role.

    Ms Evans said the AAG was involved in stakeholder engagement in August which contributed to a draft International Student Wellbeing Strategy.

    “From this engagement, we identified a number of action areas. Since then, group members have been working on ways to improve the overall international student experience in Auckland, with the potential to roll these out nationally if successful.”

    Below are some of the initiatives underway.

    • ATEED and NZ Police are working on a refresh of a safety video for international students. While it will be filmed in Auckland, its messaging will apply to students nationally, and should be available from early 2017.
    • ATEED is developing an International Student Experience programme in partnership with ENZ and industry partners.
    • Several agencies are looking at ways to improve the information available to international students and their families. Students are seeking more information on such topics as the true cost of living, insurance and what it covers, employment rights, health services and New Zealand culture.
    • Agencies are also looking at ways to provide more volunteer and internship opportunities for international students. ATEED and MBIE will also launch phase two of their job-ready graduate programme working with ICT grads specifically.
    • Several agencies are looking at ways to better support international parents, particularly those accompanying children who are studying at primary school here. These parents can be isolated and lonely. This support can also extend to the homestay parents who host international students.

    “These initiatives are a start, and the AAG members are enthusiastically collaborating to make sure that opportunities to enhance the international student experience are progressed,” says Ms Evans.

    She says the AAG’s work is aimed to enhance the service that international students receive from their education provider, rather than replacing it.
