  • Driving student interest in Indonesia through strategic co-funded initiatives

    ENZ and SUN Education delivered a jam-packed programme of student recruitment events in Surabaya and Jakarta in late May to drive student interest and connect New Zealand providers with potential partners for academic collaboration. 

    Surabaya 

    The activity began with an introductory meeting between Universitas Airlangga’s International Office and visiting New Zealand providers to explore opportunities for academic collaboration between our two countries.  

    The meeting was attended by representatives from the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, the New Zealand Honorary Consulate in Surabaya and SUN Education.  

    Discussions centred on potential areas of partnership, including articulation pathways, staff exchanges, guest lectures, and joint research initiatives. 

    The following day, providers met with prospective students at the Study in New Zealand Exhibition in Surabaya 

    The exhibition featured the University of Auckland, Auckland University of Technology, University of Waikato, UP Education, University of Otago, Le Cordon Bleu, the Southern Institute of Technology and Lincoln University. 

    The event attracted around 200 students and their parents.

    Jakarta

    Over to Jakarta, ENZ organised an exhibition featuring a strong line-up of New Zealand institutions, comprised of all eight of New Zealand’s universities alongside the Southern Institute of Technology, Le Cordon Bleu, University of Canterbury International College and UP Education.  

    The fair attracted approximately 250 students and parents, all eager to explore the diverse study options and world-class education opportunities that New Zealand has to offer. 

    To close off a busy student recruitment period, a mini exhibition was hosted at Universitas Indonesia, the top-ranked university in Indonesia 

    The exhibition was specifically for LPDP Affirmative Scholars and students interested in postgraduate-level study.  

    As part of the event, ENZ Market Manager, Naluri Bella, delivered a ‘Study in New Zealand session, which attracted around 100 enthusiastic attendees.  

    The session provided insights into New Zealand’s high-quality education system and scholarship opportunities, helping to raise awareness and inspire future postgraduate study pathways.    

    ENZ’s Regional Director (Asia) Ben Burrowes said the activities were designed enhance agents and students' awareness of New Zealand’s world-class education offering.  

    “These collaborations help position New Zealand as a competitive and credible choice for Indonesian students,” he added. 

  • International student enrolments continue upward surge

    “Enrolments are steadily rising to pre-pandemic levels, with 2024 enrolments (83,425) now at 72 percent of 2019 totals (115,705).  

    “New Zealand reaps a broad range of economic, social and cultural benefits from having international students in our midst. International education boosts our economy, creates business opportunities, fuels innovation, and delivers essential cross-cultural skills for a more connected world.  

    “This sustained growth highlights the international education sector’s progress towards achieving the Government’s Going for Growth Plan goal of doubling the export revenue from international education by 2034.  

    “Universities and government-funded private training establishments (PTEs) are close to matching 2019 enrolment numbers. We are seeing enrolments grow across universities, schools, Te Pūkenga/NZIST, government-funded PTEs, and English language schools subsectors. In 2024, the strongest year-on-year growth was seen at government-funded PTEs (+59%) along with primary (+53%) and intermediate (+32%) schools.  

    “Universities saw 33,485 total enrolments, schools had 18,350 enrolments, while Te Pūkenga/NZIST and government-funded PTEs each had 10,270 and 10,185 enrolments, respectively.  

    “More international students are now enrolled for master’s study programmes in New Zealand. Between 2023 and 2024, there has been a 68% increase in master’s enrolments, with 14,695 international students in 2024, up from 8,740 in 2023. This is an 85% increase compared to 2019 when we had 7,945 enrolments for master’s study.  

    “The overall rise in enrolments at the national level is underscored by a diversity of regions leading strong growth from 2023, including Waikato (+50%), Hawke’s Bay (+44%), West Coast (+185%) and Gisborne (+156%). The Waikato region is notable in that it has seen significant growth across multiple subsectors: universities, Te Pūkenga/NZIST, government-funded PTEs and schools.  

    “China and India remain the top two source markets for international student enrolments with 34% and 14% enrolments respectively, followed by Japan (9%), South Korea (4%), Thailand (3%), United States of America (3%), Germany (3%), the Philippines (3%) and Sri Lanka (3%),” Malu says.

    Government-funded PTEs are PTEs that receive government student funding for learners who are defined as domestic students under the Education and Training Act 2020 (note that PhD and exchange students are defined as domestic students under the Act).

  • Government announces International Education Going for Growth Plan

    Created to inspire and connect, this dynamic video showcases the full experience of studying and living in Aotearoa New Zealand as an international student.

    The Plan outlines an objective to double the international education sector’s economic contribution by 2034. This target has been set at $7.2 billion. 

    In the short term, the Plan will have Education New Zealand (ENZ) focus its promotional efforts on markets with the highest potential for growth while continuing to maintain New Zealand’s strong presence and reputation for high-quality education in other markets. 

    ENZ Chief Executive Amanda Malu says New Zealand reaps a broad range of economic, social and cultural benefits from having international students in our classrooms and communities.

    “A New Zealand education experience transforms lives, creating lifelong connections between students and Aotearoa. International education fuels innovation, boosts our economy, creates business opportunities, and delivers essential cross-cultural skills for a more connected world. The International Education Going for Growth Plan brings to life a vision to grow New Zealand as the destination of choice for international students,” Ms Malu said.

    The plan to grow the international student sector has three objectives:

    1. raise awareness of New Zealand as a study destination from 40% in 2024, to 42% in 2027 and 44% by 2034.

    2. grow student enrolments from 83,400 in 2024 to 105,000 in 2027 and 119,000 by 2034.

    3. increase the proportion of prospective students rating NZ among their top three choices of study destination from 18% in 2024 to 20% in 2027 and 22% in 2034.

    In November 2025, in-study work rights will increase from 20 to 25 hours per week for eligible student visa holders and in-study work rights will be extended to all tertiary students in approved exchange or Study Abroad programmes, including programmes one-semester long.

    The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) will progress work on medium-term immigration actions under the Plan - design of a new short duration visa for some sub-degree qualifications not eligible for post-study work rights and ways to make it easier for students to apply for multi-year visas. MBIE will seek input and views from key stakeholders to inform the development of this work.

  • Student visas moving to enhanced Immigration Online

    From 18 August 2025, all international student visa applications will move to Immigration New Zealand’s enhanced Immigration Online system. For education agents submitting applications on behalf of international students around this timeframe, here are important updates on how applications will be managed during this transition –  

    • All applications submitted on or before 17 August will be processed under the old system 

    • Draft applications that have not been submitted by 17 August have until 17 September to be completed and submitted. 

    • International students should still aim to apply 3 months ahead of their intended travel date regardless of the change in Immigration New Zealand’s application forms. This will help to avoid delays that may impact students’ ability to begin study.

    Important to note: Immigration New Zealand will do its best to answer submitted questions but may not be able to respond to all of them. Questions that will be resolved by viewing/using the new Student Visa application form on 18 August will not be answered. 

  • Student works on display

    Titled ‘Creative & Technical: Thai students & New Zealand’, the exhibition was curated by ENZ and showcases New Zealand’s study options in creative and technical disciplines through 18 pieces of student work.

    The exhibition, which was opened by the Rt Hon Prime Minister John Key as part of a programme of activities to further strengthen New Zealand’s relationship with Thailand, runs at the Thai Creative Design Centre (TCDC) on the sixth floor of Emporium mall until 25 November.

    Mr Izak Human, Regional Director Southeast Asia, says:  “Many of the works display aspects of both Thai and New Zealand culture and, reading the exhibition testimonials, it is clear that coming to New Zealand has had a significant impact on these students.”

    Each year, around 3,000 Thai students study in New Zealand in primary, secondary and tertiary education. The exhibition includes works from students studying at a range of levels in New Zealand from universities to institutes of technology and polytechnics, and private training establishments.

    Its opening was attended by distinguished guests, New Zealand educated alumni, representatives of New Zealand institutions and Thai media.

  • NZ education front page in India

    The story, an interview with Education New Zealand’s South Asia Regional Director, Ziena Jalil, was the result of a nationwide awareness-raising mission currently running in India. This includes joint media briefings with ENZ and Immigration New Zealand, and Indian news and education journalists visiting New Zealand. 

    The media work promotes New Zealand as a study destination and education business partner to influential Indian media that are widely followed by prospective Indian students and their parents. 

    Early results are pleasing, with extensive coverage highlighting the benefits of study in New Zealand. The media work has included regular feeding of stories, and two joint media briefings with Immigration New Zealand in New Delhi and Mumbai. More briefings are planned, covering the country from Chandigarh to Kochi.

    The combined approach with INZ has been a particularly successful feature of the mission, Ziena says. It is the first time the two agencies have fronted media together, and the effectiveness of the collaboration suggests it may be useful in other target markets. 

    “The media are also very interested to find out more about immigration related issues so it is great to have Nathanael Mackay, INZ Area Manager, to answer questions about visa processing times and work rights associated with student visas,” she says.

    “More than 11,000 students from India are currently studying in New Zealand, making India one of the fastest growing student markets for New Zealand. Our media work is a great way to raise awareness of the growing Indian presence in New Zealand as well as the business and education partnerships which are underway and in the pipeline.”

    February has been a busy month for Indian media in New Zealand too, with two specialist Indian education writers visiting.  

    Malini Sen, the editor of the Education Times (part of The Times of India), spent five days in early February meeting Indian students in New Zealand and touring universities, institutes of technology and polytechnics throughout the country. One student she talked to was Kevin D’Souza, a former advertising executive from Mumbai. Kevin enrolled in the MBA programme at the Auckland University of Technology after deciding he wanted to "skill up" while "spending more time with my family and enjoying the slower pace of life in New Zealand".  

    On 24 February the editor of Education Plus (the education supplement of The Hindu) arrives for a week’s visit. The Hindu is considered the most influential paper in India, with particularly strong coverage in south India. Archana Subramanium’s focus will be on the niche courses New Zealand has to offer, such as marine biology and geology. 

    Having journalists on the ground can provide surprising insight. A chat with border security staff at Auckland airport revealed a need for arriving students to have more information about the presence of Indian speciality food stores here, saving a lot of food confiscation in customs. Malini Sen promised to confirm to her Education Times readers that Indian foods are widely available in the multi-cultural country that is New Zealand. 

  • International Student Barometer results

    What can we do differently to meet and exceed students’ expectations?

    The 2014 English Language Sector (ELS) and Private Training Establishment (PTE) International Student Barometer (ISB) surveys were commissioned by Education New Zealand to investigate the decision-making, expectations, perceptions and experiences of over 2,000 international students enrolled with New Zealand providers. 

    The ISB surveys also incorporate a global benchmark to provide an indication of how New Zealand compares to other countries offering English language learning and niche education such as that offered by PTEs.

    Overall, students rate their study experience in New Zealand highly – above the global benchmark for both sectors. Students’ inclination to recommend their institution is above the global average 2012 for the ELS, but slightly below the global average for the PTE sector.

    Interactive seminars for PTE and ELS providers were held last week as an opportunity for providers to delve a little deeper into the findings and examine best practice activity.

    Participants in both seminars were in agreement that the setting and meeting of expectations, and opportunities to meet and interact with New Zealanders were priorities going forward.  

    Other areas identified by participants for consideration included:
    • The need to address the sense of isolation from school and community that some students feel by facilitating involvement in community, cultural and groups and sports clubs.

    • Providing timely and accurate information to the student before they arrive in New Zealand, on the programme of study and on the New Zealand lifestyle and Kiwi culture.

    • With social networking sites ranking low in importance as an influencer for choice of institution should organisations rethink their marketing activities?

    • The provision of tailored pathways advice for students progressing to further study or into employment.

  • New General Manager for ENZ

    Paul will shape and develop ENZ’s international marketing strategies and New Zealand education’s global brand, and oversee our channels to international markets, helping to realise ENZ’s business plan and strategy.

    An experienced General Manager, Paul joins ENZ from advertising agency FCB Wellington, where he has led the Wellington office for the past three years. He has more than 15 years’ experience in marketing strategy, digital marketing, international marketing and team management.

    Some of Paul’s recent award-winning campaigns at FCB include Inland Revenue’s Overseas Based Borrowers student loans campaign and the Electricity Authority’s What’s My Number campaign. He worked with the Ministry of Education to launch the inaugural Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards, and with the Open Polytechnic on their ‘Learning for an Open World’ brand repositioning campaign. Prior to these New Zealand-based roles, Paul worked for the Economist in London and then Asia, setting up the marketing department in Singapore and growing revenue from their publishing products. 

    ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson says Paul will work closely with ENZ’s international team and the industry in New Zealand to continue growing awareness of, and preference for, a New Zealand education in our target markets.

    “With the latest student visa dashboard showing first-time student visas are up 11% to date, Paul joins us at a time of continuing strong growth in international education.

    “His long-standing marketing experience will build on this momentum, taking our Think New education brand from strength to strength.”
