  • Focus on Viet Nam visa processing

    Since April, Mumbai has processed 129 student visa applications from Viet Nam. The approval rate is 72%, which is in line with the approval rates recorded when processing was done in Ho Chi Minh City.  

    INZ Sector Relationship Manager (Education), Celia Coombes, said that some education providers have expressed concern that INZ processes have changed since Mumbai began processing. 

    “We would like to take the opportunity to advise that this is not the case. 

    The Mumbai office is doing some further work on understanding how particular sub-sectors interact with the Vietnamese market so staff can have the most up-to-date information. 

    “An INZ staff member will also accompany ENZ’s Agent Manager, Dan Smidt, to Viet Nam early next month so that both agencies can connect directly with education agents in market and nurture those key relationships.  

    Celia said that if providers or students have any questions about visa decisions or processes relating to any of the three student visa processing offices (Beijing, Mumbai, or Palmerston North), please contact that office directly to discuss.  

    She said that declines could be the result of incorrect documentation, or the agent not responding to a request for further information. The relevant processing office was best placed to provide clarity, she said

  • Māori perspective in internationalisation

    Having seen how international education creates long-term relationships and influences worldviews, in 2018, the University of Otago has established Tūrangawaewae Pōkai Whenua.This is an indigenous exchange programme connecting Māori with indigenous communities in Australia, Canada and the US.

    Jason Cushen, Director International at the University of Otago, said the programme uses a network of partner universities to connect Māori students with other indigenous communities.

    “International education is a lifechanging experience for students but for indigenous students in particular it can be a unique opportunity to connect with indigenous peers around the world, to share experiences and customs, and discuss the role cultural identity plays in education.

    Jason and Tuari Potiki, Director of the Office of Maori Development, will present at NZIEC outlining how the programme will operate, and its place within broader mobility and diversity initiatives at the University of Otago.

    A similar programme is being developed in Auckland, thanks to a partnership between Study Auckland and the hapū of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. Together, they have created the Rukuhia Leadership Programme, a cultural immersion experience designed especially for international students.

    Students spend a day on a marae participating in workshops that focus on leadership, values, the connection of people, place and environment, and they learn about the work Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei does in the community. They experience a pōwhiri, meet iwi leaders, and learn te reo Māori greetings and pronunciation, waiata and haka.

    Henry Matthews, Head of International Education at Study Auckland says the pilot programme emphasises the appeal of a uniquely New Zealand study experience.

    “The leaders of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei incorporate their values of Manaakitanga, Kaitiakitanga, Whanaunagatanga and Tino Rangatiratanga into the programme, which provides students with a powerful sense of belonging, connection and empowerment.

    “It is an unforgettable international student experience, and something that can be easily replicated across other parts of New Zealand.”

  • Indian students look to Kiwi universities

    The third round of the New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) was announced earlier this month at a student and media event, with John Laxon, ENZ Regional Director for SSEA and actress Kriti Sanon, ENZ’s Brand Ambassador for India, on hand to present.

    This round of NZEA is the biggest yet, with 34 scholarships together valued at $215,000 NZD. The scholarships are jointly funded by ENZ and all eight New Zealand universities, offering deserving Indian students partial scholarships to study at New Zealand universities.

    On the back of the awards, ENZ also partnered with Universities New Zealand to launch the New Zealand Master’s campaign in India, promoting industry-linked 18-month taught Master’s qualifications for Indian students, with flexible options to suit a student’s career trajectory.

    A dedicated microsite to help students explore options is now live.

    ENZ’s Country Manager for India, Jugnu Roy, says both initiatives show there’s a growing interest among Indian students for tertiary qualifications in New Zealand universities.

    “In particular, they are drawn to the flexible nature of the way New Zealand courses are structured and the fact that all our universities rank in top 3% of the world globally (QS world rankings).

    “That they can access these ‘Future-proof’ programmes that help prepare students to enter the global marketplace is what makes us stand out as a study destination compared to other countries.

    “Both of our announcements were well received by students and media – ENZ’s scholarship team saw a surge of high quality applications coming in for the 2018/19 round of NZEA.”

    To amplify both announcements, ENZ and some New Zealand universities are organising a Counsellor Training Webinar later in the month to equip agents to help promote these initiatives to prospective students.

  • Alumni embrace tikanga Māori in Vermont

    The North American Whānau Council – East Coast is one of three Whānau Councils worldwide (the other two being Europe and the USA’s West Coast) and is made up of AUT alumni who attended the Noho Marae weekend at AUT’s Ngā Wai o Horotiu marae.

    There, students learned what it means to be whānau and experienced a range of Māori cultural activities including sleeping on the marae and learning waiata and the haka.

    Originally a student-driven initiative in Europe, the Whānau Councils are now supported formally by AUT and Jason King, AUT’s Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Development. Jason and his wife Andrea make an annual trip to each of the Whānau Councils’ AGMs.

    Lewis Gibson, ENZ Field Director, North America, attended this year’s events with students from Champlain College (currently hosting its first Māori student on campus) and the University of Vermont (UVM) where AUT has exchange programmes.

    “The Whānau Councils act as local communities for alumni to maintain their connections to each other, New Zealand and Māori culture.

    “They’ve also been instrumental in helping US universities connect with their own tangata whenua; the Chief of the Nulhegan Abenaki tribe, Don Stevens, attended Whānau Council events this month to show support. For these students, it was the first time many had had any interaction with the Abenaki.”

    Lewis said the experience these students had at AUT’s Noho Marae has profoundly impacted them, turning them into lifelong advocates for New Zealand, its education system and Māori culture.

    “By embracing an indigenous culture on the other side of the world these students have found a home away from home and a whānau they belong to.”

    This sense of belonging has remained long after those students left New Zealand. Today, a large number of alumni from both UVM and Champlain College have become teachers, sharing Māori culture in their own classrooms with their students.

    “By incorporating lessons and culture from New Zealand, these alumni are exposing US students to the benefits of a New Zealand education, as well as actively sharing their positive New Zealand education experiences with their peers in the wider community.

    “This encourages more US students to participate in study abroad opportunities in New Zealand, and further entrenches the kiwi connections in Vermont,” Lewis said.

  • US delegation delighted by New Zealand biculturalism

    Although many of the study abroad advisors were already working with New Zealand partners and sending students to New Zealand, they hadn’t experienced the country themselves.

    Prior to the visit, participants listed Māori culture and heritage as one of their top three focuses for the visit to New Zealand institutions.

    In Dunedin, the delegation was welcomed onto the Otago Polytechnic campus with a powhiri. In return, the delegation sang “Te Aroha” – after having practised it on the bus ride from their hotel.

    The group said this moment, and similar experiences on other New Zealand campuses, was what provided them with a better understanding of New Zealand and the international student experience – even more so than the brochures they received from institutions.

    “I was surprised and very impressed to see how Māori culture is so integrated and celebrated around the country. This is unique and a stark contrast to the experience of indigenous cultures in other countries,” said one delegate.

    Alanna Dick, ENZ Field Director – North America, said the advisors left with a better understanding of New Zealand, and a drive to help more US students experience it too.

    “It was clear to me the visit was a success when one study abroad advisor told me that now they understand the main points of difference between New Zealand and Australia! They now tell their students they would have a unique study experience in New Zealand, especially if they take a course to learn more about the indigenous culture like Kapa Haka or introduction to te Reo Māori.”

    The US delegation offered suggestions for New Zealand institutions to consider when hosting international guests:

    • Explain how Māori culture is embedded into curriculum
    • Invite Kiwi students to sit on a student panel or lead campus tours
    • More conversations over kai with faculty, staff and students and less PowerPoint presentations
    • Consider having faculty give a short presentation about their area of research or courses they teach.

    The US delegation also attended NZIEC to present a session on US engagement. They shared interesting initiatives and partnership models from their campuses, highlighted the importance of curriculum integration between US and overseas institutions, and shared best practices for outreach to students from diverse or underrepresented backgrounds.

  • Student visa processing update

    INZ’s Head of Operations in Mumbai, Marcelle Foley said it is typical at this time of year for INZ to receive a high volume of applications, especially offshore. Marcelle says that applications that are submitted online, with all the required documentation will be prioritised.  

    “To ensure ample time for processing, students should apply at least eight weeks prior to the date of their intended travel to New Zealand. This allows INZ to appropriately assess the student’s application and to make any necessary verification steps to finalise the visa in time for the date of travel to New Zealand,” says Marcelle.

    To enable the smooth processing of their application, students are encouraged to:

    • Apply using the Immigration ONLINE submission platform. This is INZ’s preferred submission channel and the most efficient.
    • Provide all the required documentation when submitting an application. Often, delays in processing occur when Immigration Officers do not have enough information at hand to make a decision on an application.
    • Contact INZ only when required. There is no need to check in with INZ on the processing of an application unless the situation is urgent. As soon as an application is finalised or INZ needs further information, they will make contact with you.

  • Engaging with Italian students and agents

    Italy is New Zealand’s third-largest source of school students in Europe, the sixth-largest European market across all sectors, and our 25th largest market globally. The number of international students coming to New Zealand from Italy has grown steadily in recent years to 617 in 2017.  

    In October, the ENZ team attended bustling student fairs in Rome and Milan, targeting students looking for study abroad opportunities at tertiary level.  

    ENZ’s Market Development Manager Europe, Olga Elli, said it was a great opportunity to talk to students one-on-one – particularly at tertiary level, there is much interest in postgraduate study programmes  

    “Italian students are really attracted to the idea of New Zealand but their knowledge of our education offering is still fairly low,” said Olga.  

    “Talking to hundreds of students and making presentations at each fair provided an opportunity to promote New Zealand education. There is also a growing focus on vocational training and pathways to employment – which fits well with our current ‘future-proof’ messaging.” 

    Over half of Italian students coming to New Zealand choose to study in Auckland, but education agents who attended an ENZ workshop in Milan were keen to hear more about opportunities in other areas of New Zealand. 

    “Italian agents are very engaged and several of the workshop attendees had recently been on a familiarisation visit to New Zealand, visiting Northland, Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch.   

    We are working with regional development agencies to run a series of webinars for agents in Europe to boost their knowledge, so they have the tools to advise their clients about what New Zealand can offer international students.” 

    New Zealand’s profile as an education destination for Italian high school students was boosted this year by ENZ’s Follow the Kiwi scholarship campaign which ran in France, Germany and ItalyItaly led the way in generating digital engagement, with the highest number of visits to the scholarship application page, and a strong showing in completed applications and requests for further information. 

    Building on this engagement, Olga paid a surprise visit to the school of Italian Follow the Kiwi scholar Gaia Leidi, from Busto Arsizio, near Milan, who will use the NZ$15,000 award to study at Kerikeri High School from January to September next year. 

    “Our visit to Gaia’s school generated lots of media attention. She’s a huge rugby fan and was blown away to be invited to the All Blacks vs. Italy game in Rome later this month!  

    “ENZ intends to build on the success of this years campaign and will run it again next year – watch this space!”

    “Think of your SiNZ profile as the digital shop front that links to your own website. For many schools, and especially smaller providers, this profile is a key way that a prospective student can find you through ENZ’s marketing efforts.

    “We want to make your profile as good as we can. Over the next few months, ENZ will be undertaking a scan of all profiles and where needed we’ll refresh a profile so it’s ready for the new year.

    “We’ll start by looking to see where a profile hasn’t been updated for quite a while or where key information isn’t included. We’ll then refresh profiles with information from your own website and check in with you to ensure you are on board. We’ll also check that we have the correct administrator details so that you can update it in the future.”
