  • Advertising opportunity in Japan

    ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, Misa Kitaoka, said the annual guidebook is the only Japanese publication officially supported by the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo and ENZ.

    “With the Rugby World Cup held in Japan for the first time this year, New Zealand will have an increased presence and visibility in the public,” said Misa.

    “This guidebook is a great opportunity for regional bodies and individual providers to promote their offering. Furthermore, because destination marketing is a key part of education promotion in Japan, KBunsha is offering a separate advertising rate for regional groups.”

    To advertise, bookings must be made by 22 March 2019.

  • Kiwi publisher partners with US

    The partnership will see the development of a new Global Ed series, JillE Literacy, a reading package containing more than 320 books, written by international education consultant and author, Jill Eggleton.

    The series will support HMH’s new reading programme, Into Reading, and will be available for classroom use from June 2019.

    Jill Eggleton, and Global Ed Director Tracy Strudley, have been working with HMH for 12 months and are delighted with the new partnership.

    “Their access into classrooms in the US is second-to-none. Our goal is to teach reading and HMH can sell these books across US, Canada, South America and the Middle East,” said Tracy.

    “The partnership was made possible thanks in part to ENZ’s funding to the Publishers Association New Zealand, which allowed us to travel into the market twice. Without that support, this deal would have taken significantly longer to conclude.”

    As part of the partnership, Jill will travel to the US twice a year to train teachers on how to teach reading. Global Ed has worked with New Zealand-based company Essential Resources to build supporting teacher material for JillE Literacy.

    “We need more engaged students. Therefore, we need books that excite them – books that spark emotion, imagination, critical thinking, curiosity and creativity,” said Jill.

    ENZ Industry Development Manager Annabel Robertson says the partnership shows that education technology (EdTech) has great potential to internationalise New Zealand.

    “Global Ed’s new partnership is sharing New Zealand teaching styles and providing teachers around the world with literacy tools to help students. This is great international publicity for our education system.”

  • Malaysian students mean business

    The students attended the camp over two weekends, learning about KYS’ study pathways in New Zealand through the Foundation (Accounting and Science) and Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting programmes offered at the KYS campus in Melaka. 

    KYS Business School’s strengths are in its accounting programmes as its founder, Tan Sri Halim Saad, studied Accounting at Victoria University of Wellington in the 1970s.  

    KYS Chief Executive, Datuk Kamaruddin Bin Awang, and CEO & Academic Director, Mr Noor Zaidi Bin Mohd Noor, attended the camps and shared their experiences studying in New Zealand.  

    Desiree Lee, ENZ’s Market Manager, Malaysia & Philippines also joined the events and provided small Kiwi gifts to the students. 

    “The students came from across the country and were delighted with their eye-opening weekend at KYS. There was interest in the FCertNZ from parents too, given the traditional preference for STEM subjects from Malaysian parents. 

    “The event also featured an alumni panel where graduates spoke fondly of their time in New Zealand, particularly the welcoming nature of Kiwis and Muslim-friendly environment – such as the ease of getting halal food. 

    In the Foundation in Accounting programme, students complete their first two years of study locally in Malaysia before continuing study in New Zealand to qualify as chartered accountants or work towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting.  

    Since 2015, a total of 530 Malaysian students from KYS’ Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting programme have attended university in New Zealand.  

    The FCertNZ is another of KYS’ foundation programme for entry into all science degrees at New Zealand universities. This one-year Foundation in Science study programme enables students to enter into science degree at any our eight New Zealand universities. 

    KYS Business School is currently joining ENZ for other activities in East Malaysia from 8-16 March, including a commercial fair and schools roadshow.

  • Consultation on proposed changes to vocational education in New Zealand underway

    A key aim is to create a more sustainable future for the Institute of Technology and Polytechnic (ITP) sector.

    The proposed reform would bring together New Zealand’s ITPs to create one new Institute of Skills and Technology, which would continue to be state-owned and funded.

    ENZ’s Chief Executive Grant McPherson encourages those in the international education sector to have their say.

    “Every year more than 18,000 international students choose to study at New Zealand Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) due to the quality of educational experience and career development opportunities they provide.

    “Throughout 2019, we will continue to support ITPs in market, providing global marketing campaigns, events, agent training, market intelligence, agent and media familiarisation tours, lead referrals from the www.studyinnewzealand.govt.nz website, and other resources. At a regional level, we will continue to support ITPs via ENZ’s Regional Partnership Programme.

    “New Zealand’s ITPs remain open for business and continue to welcome international students,” he says.

  • ENZ farewells Charles Finny

    Charles was appointed in 2011 when ENZ was first established and has led the organisation through a period of extraordinary change and growth. 

    Under Charles watch, ENZ reached the international education sector’s then target of $5 billion value seven years early. He chaired ENZ through three ministers, three Prime Ministers, two governments, and three Secretaries of Education. He approved 28 Quarterly Reports and seven Annual Reports, appeared at five Select Committee hearings and governed with 14 Board members. 

    Charles has led both ENZ and the wider community through a considerable change in attitude and understanding of the broader value of international education, said ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson, who added that he had met with Charles pretty much every week for 7 years.” 

    For many leaders the aim is to leave an organisation in better shape than when they arrived. I'd say, Job very well done.”  

    Charles was presented with a Māripi, a traditional, elaborately carved Māori cutting instrument made of wood, as an acknowledgement of ENZrespect, appreciation and gratitude.   

    Steve Maharey took up the role of ENZ Chair on 1 March. His appointment is for three years. 

  • New Zealand tops English-speaking countries in Educating for the Future ranking

    Index cover2There were just 1.6 points between top-ranked Finland (80.9), second place-getter Switzerland (80.3) and New Zealand on 79.3 points.

    The overall ranking was a small drop for New Zealand, which ranked first out of 35 economies in the first EIU report which came out in September 2017. However, the 2018 ranking involves 50 economies and additional indicators on which countries were evaluated.

    "This is a very good result for New Zealand," said ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson.

    "New Zealand retains its position as the number one English-speaking country in the ranking as well as its top ranking in the Asia-Pacific region.

    "Along with Finland, New Zealand is the only country that has been in the top 3 two years in a row."

    The index evaluates the way that countries approach future-focused education to encompass problem-based learning, innovative teaching methods and broader themes of global citizenship.

    It has a focus on young people aged 15 to 24 in 50 economies, and measures three pillars of education systems – policy approaches, teaching conditions and broader gauges of societal freedom and openness – as a means of preparing young people to meet the challenges of work and society in future.

  • Statement from Grant McPherson, ENZ Chief Executive

    New Zealand authorities and emergency services are working together to respond to the terrorist incident in Christchurch yesterday.

    Education New Zealand is working with providers and students to ensure they have the support and information they need.

    ENZ endorses this statement from New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on the event:

    Our thoughts and our prayers are with those who have been impacted today. Christchurch was their home. For many, this may not have been the place they were born, in fact for many, New Zealand was their choice. 

    The place they actively came to, and committed to. The place they were raising their families. Where they were parts of communities that they loved and who loved them in return. It was a place that many came to for its safety. A place where they were free to practice their culture and their religion. 

    For those of you who are watching at home tonight, and questioning how this could have happened here. 

    We, New Zealand, we were not a target because we are a safe harbour for those who hate. 

    We were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone racism, because we are an enclave for extremism. 

    We were chosen for the very fact that we are none of those things. 

    Because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion. A home for those who share our values. Refuge for those who needs it. And those values will not and cannot be shaken by this attack.

    We are a proud nation of more than 200 ethnicities, 160 languages. And amongst that diversity we share common values. And the one that we place the currency on right now is our compassion and support for the community of those directly affected by this tragedy.

  • Letter from the Acting CE: After Christchurch

    As Grant McPherson said last week, the tragedy in Christchurch was an assault on the values that New Zealanders hold dear – values of international friendship, tolerance, care and a global outlook. These values are at the core of international education and they are more important now than ever. 

    While our country grieves, we have been heartened by the compassion we’ve seen across New Zealand – Campus Watch initiatives, vigils, social media engagement and practical help with transport and food, much of it led by students 

    We are heartened that the outpouring of support and concern from New Zealanders over the last 12 days has been so visible internationally. 

    At ENZ, we are continuing our close contact with education providersinternational teams and government partners, as well as monitoring and evaluating the latest intelligence and media coverage. We will continue to respond to industry and market needs for information, reassurance and practical support including messages to current and prospective students and families. 

    Over the next few weeks, we will be incorporating messages of care and support into all our activities and approaches. 

    ENZ is committed to promoting New Zealand internationally as an inclusive and welcoming study destination, where manaakitanga is shown to all students who join us here.

  • University of Auckland tops Impact Rankings 2019

    The University of Auckland (UoA) is ranked 1st overall based on its performance on four of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)partnership for the goalsgood health and wellbeinggender equality; and sustainable cities and communities.  

    Initiatives include a staff cycling scheme, changes in printing access to reduce paper waste, recycling workshops and clothing swaps. 

    Two other New Zealand universities also placed well: AUT at 16th and Massey at 38th. More than 500 universities around the world submitted data for the report. 

    This is the first time THE has published its Impact Rankings. While most university rankings use indicators of research and teaching excellence, the Impact Rankings aim to recognise universities for their social and economic impact. 

    UoA Vice-Chancellor Professor Stuart McCutcheon is delighted that UoA’s work has been acknowledged internationally and demonstrates how relevant universities are.  

    “Universities have an important role to play in generating the knowledge and capacity necessary to achieve the SDG objectives. Correspondingly, they are valuable to universities because they enable us to frame our research, teaching, operations, capacity building, networks and partnerships in a way that enables the contributions we make to be universally recognised and understood.” 

    Massey University Vice-Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas says, “The University of Auckland is to be congratulated for an outstanding performance as number one in the world. I believe that reflects well on the entire nation. 

    “This exercise is valuable to universities. It makes us pause and take stock of what we do, align with collaborative global goals and examine our contributions against these goals in a way that can be globally benchmarked.” 

    ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson said the results reflected well on New Zealand. 

    “Their contributions on these issues are a testament to their global outlook, and reinforce New Zealand’s reputation as an advanced, progressive and innovative society. It is also what makes New Zealand an attractive study destination to many students from around the world each year.”
