  • Get involved in upcoming Greater China initiatives

    China Annual Conference for International Education (CACIE)

    The annual CACIE conference will be held as a hybrid in-person/virtual event from 21-23 October in Beijing, directly before the China Education Expo.

    Organised by the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), CACIE provides opportunities for international education providers, agents and other professionals to network and explore ideas and issues within the sector. This year’s theme is New Opportunities and Prospects for Building an Open and High-Quality Education System.

    ENZ encourages New Zealand providers to submit proposals. Please visit the CACIE website and consider submitting a proposal.

    Proposals should focus on one of the four forums: Higher Education, Vocational Education, Basic Education, Thematic Education.

    Submissions must include: speaker photo, bio, and abstract (about 200 words). Email your submission to Zhang Zhaotian at zhangzhaotian@ceaie.edu.cn.

    Deadline for submitting proposals is 31 July. Spots are limited.

    China Education Expo (CEE)

    ENZ is currently planning a New Zealand national pavilion at the hybrid event from 23-24 October, which is expecting over 20,000 visitors.

    ENZ will send more information to New Zealand education providers to register to exhibit on the New Zealand national pavilion. 

  • Announcing closing plenary speaker for NZIEC KI TUA 2024

    Drawing on his experience leading health care organisations and the health system in Aotearoa New Zealand, including during periods of significant change and uncertainty, Sir Ashley’s closing plenary session will focus on how to lead effectively now and in the future. He will talk to NZIEC KI TUA delegates about leading through change and uncertainty.   

    “We live in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world, which needs leaders to be agile and adaptable who can lead using different approaches than what we have used in the past. I am looking forward to speaking at NZIEC KI TUA on how we can lead in a world of rapid change and complexity, Sir Ashley said. 
     

    Lead with Stories workshop by Jehan Casinader  

    Award-winning journalist and speaker, Jehan Casinader, will run a workshop, Lead with Stories at NZIEC KI TUA on 7 August. Casinader has spent 15 years telling compelling stories that resonate with people from all walks of life. He has a thorough understanding of New Zealand’s international education sector – and a degree in public policy.  

    Casinader says storytelling makes global influence possible 

    As New Zealand revives its international education sector, leaders and organisations will work harder than ever to engage the hearts and minds of students and partners around the world.  

    However, in an increasingly noisy digital world, it’s harder to grab people’s attention.  

    "Traditional marketing no longer cuts it. And yet, many of us lack the confidence and skills to tell stories or we’re afraid to. As a result, our most important messages are never heard,” Casinader says.  

    In his workshop, Casinader will share practical tools that helps leaders and staff from across the sector to tell compelling stories.  

    The NZIEC KI TUA 2024 programme will be available in July.

  • Student visa approval rates

    Updated student visa decision data

    The 2017 student visa decision data is now available on the INZ website.

    Education providers must use this list when enrolling international students, to confirm if the students come from a country with a high visa decline rate for the purposes of Rule 18.2 of the NZQF Programme Approval and Accreditation Rules 2013. This Rule specifies the English language proficiency testing requirements for international students from countries with a student visa decline rate of more than 20 percent.

    The list is updated annually and comes into force for Rule 18 purposes one month after publication.

    Education providers that enrol international students have until 25 February 2018 to adjust their enrolment policies. From that date, education organisations must use the published 2017 decline rates when enrolling international students, to determine which Rule 18 requirements apply.

    Agent approval data for Viet Nam and the Philippines

    Since 2016, INZ has published student visa approval rates of education agents in India on its website. INZ has now extended this to include the 2017 student visa approval rate data for education agents assisting student visa applicants in Viet Nam and the Philippines.

    The data includes all education agent and adviser types, including offshore exempt agents and licensed immigration advisers.

    The Viet Nam report is limited to education agents with five or more student visa applications completed in the stated time period, while the Philippines and India reports are limited to education agents with 10 or more student visa applications completed.

  • Engaging agents

    Workshops of this nature are a highly efficient mechanism for New Zealand schools and tertiary institutions to establish new, and strengthen existing, relationships with agents in a relatively cost effective way. The energy and buzz in the room clearly demonstrated the enthusiasm agents and New Zealand providers had for the opportunity to meet and engage with one another.

    Institution representatives commented how encouraging it was to see that so many of the agents at ANZA – approximately a quarter – were first time attendees. From an ENZ business development perspective it was great to see New Zealand regions take the opportunity to promote themselves at the workshop, with many regions arranging agent familiarisation visits following the workshop.

    The ENZ booth was well patronised, with agents who were new to New Zealand keen to know about how to work more closely with our education providers, and others with more experience in New Zealand commenting that awareness of New Zealand as a quality education destination is increasing. Others enquired about how to access the wonders of the Brand Lab and had queries about the agent training programme.

    ICEF reported that a total of 86 education institutions from Australia and New Zealand, 12 work and travel organisations, 35 service providers and 147 ICEF-screened agents from 37 countries, gathered for the three days, participating in over 3,400 pre-scheduled meetings.

    The 2016 ANZA Workshop will be held April 13 – 15 in Melbourne, Australia at the Pullman Melbourne Albert Park.

  • Te Wiki o te reo Māori - Māori Language Week 2022

    The Ikubunkan Institute of Education in Tokyo facilitates a one-year study abroad programme for students to attend high schools in New Zealand, Australia and Canada. Pre-COVID, Ikubunkan sent 100 students annually to NZ for three terms at 100 public schools.

    Because students have learned kapa haka/waiata at different schools they have developed their own Ikubunkan’s style of kapa haka when practising as one school.

    Ikubunkan students performed haka for the former Māori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell, who visited the school in 2016. They also performed haka for the Prime Minister at the NZ Embassy Tokyo, when she visited Japan during the RWC in 2019.

  • Supporting PTEs to grow internationally

    The recent 2024 ITENZ Conference in September provided the ideal platform for Sharon-May McCrostie, Acting General Manager of Sector Engagement for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) to highlight some of ENZ’s work to support Private Training Establishments (PTEs) 

    Strengthening New Zealand’s reputation as a preferred destination for international students studying with PTEs by taking a collaborative approach with the subsector has been key, said Sharon-May. 

    This includes how ENZ works with PTEs to develop the subsector by organising roadshows, in-market education fairs, events and webinars. We also have a strong pipeline of activity ahead, working with PTEs through strategic marketing, partnerships, capability building, with a focus on delivering high-quality educational experiences,” added Sharon-May.

    During her presentation, Sharon-May highlighted four key points:

    • Expanding recruitment efforts in key markets such as India, China, Viet Nam, Latin America, and the Philippines, will be incredibly important in the diversification of the international student base. This will also be vital in achieving the New Zealand government’s goal to double export earnings from international education to $4.4 billion by 2027 and meeting the student enrolment target of 85,000 by 2024/25 (up from 69,000). 
    • ENZ conducts targeted marketing campaigns that aim to boost visibility and awareness of a New Zealand education. Providers can leverage ENZ marketing support in their international journey through tools like BrandLab for developing promotional materials and AgentLab for connecting with education agents. 
    • ENZ provides valuable market insights through IntelliLab, offering data on trends, student preferences, and enrolment statistics to help providers make informed decisions. 
    • Lastly, to improve the student experience, ENZ provides resources such as NauMai NZ and conducts an annual Student Experience Survey, giving providers insights into how they can better meet the needs of international students. 

    Sharon-May ended by confirming ENZ’s commitment to the subsector. 

    “We are committed to providing ongoing support for PTE providers through research, resource and capability building.  We look forward to continuing our efforts in supporting the growth of this very important part of New Zealand’s international education eco-system,” said Sharon-May. 

  • SIEBA’s 2018 hui is close to sell-out

    With 320 registered delegates, the second annual SIEBA hui on 17-18 May at Te Papa in Wellington is fully booked on day one, with places still available for the dinner and day two.

    The hui will feature 40 presenters from across the New Zealand school sector as well as a range of external experts.

    Author and television host Nigel Latta is this year’s keynote speaker.

    The hui is open to principals, international directors and managers, international deans, administrators and homestay co-ordinators of SIEBA member schools.

    Jennifer Kirkham, SIEBA Professional Learning & Development Operations Manager, who is managing the hui, said it was “very pleasing” to see the hui generate such strong interest across the sector.

    “It shows how SIEBA is continuing to grow in value to its member schools, government agencies and to wider industry.

    “The hui offers a wide range of seminars focused on building cultural competency, the student experience and running an international student business, which will appeal to the variety of delegates attending the hui.”

    The hui includes sessions on meaningful cross-cultural interaction that enrich the experience of all students, mental health and wellbeing needs of international students, and helping schools grow their international student programmes through effective strategic planning, marketing and budgeting, she said.

    “It's also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the sector’s success, with five International Education Leadership Awards being presented during the conference dinner,” Kirkham said.

    Richard Kyle, ENZ’s Business Development Manager, said ENZ’s relationship with SIEBA, as the school sector peak body for international education, has proven to be a very important government-industry partnership that continues to drive capability, quality and efficiency to the sector.

    “SIEBA also provides advice and advocacy for its members and the wider sector along with other sector peak bodies on themes such as school-to-tertiary education pathways, which help ensure a thriving sector and sustainable growth for industry,” Kyle said.

  • Notice: Brief shut down of INZ’s online client accounts in late May

    This means that education agents and providers will not be able to access their online client accounts for four days, from 8am NZT on Saturday, 28 May.

    New online applications will not be possible during this period, except for working holiday visas and skilled migrant category expressions of interest. Hard copy paper applications will still be accepted.

    IDme

    IDme will significantly improve INZ’s ability to confirm a person’s identity, making it a vital new protection against identity fraud by visa applicants.

    The system will enable biometric information (face photographs and fingerprints) from visa applicants to be uploaded online and automatically matched against personal information already held by INZ.

    IDme will be released in two tranches – the first release, from 31 May, will enable automated matching of all biographic details (personal data), fingerprints and a small volume of facial photographs. The second release, in the last quarter of 2016, will allow automated matching of all photographs.

    IDme is the latest in a series of business changes known collectively as Immigration ONLINE. Better customer service is a key aim of these changes, which include:

    • online applications for student, work and visitor visas

    • third party “apply on behalf” for INZ partners such as immigration advisors, and

    •  eVisas (passport-free and label-less visas).

    The next new service will enable families and tour groups to apply online using a single form. Once this happens, 80 percent of visa types by volume will be available online.

    Sitting behind these new services are business changes that standardise best practice and apply consistent, measurable quality standards across INZ. Traditional visa processing tasks will reduce as customers increasingly go online to apply for visas and check their visa status.

    New acceptable photo rules

    Photos can still be submitted online along with application forms, but they must now meet strict approval guidelines to avoid rejection by the system. INZ recommends that applicant photos be taken by a professional photographer or a business set up to take passport-quality photos.

  • Kiwi-China joint institute opens in Hangzhou

    The institute opened last month after being formally approved by China’s Ministry of Education in late 2016. 

    Its first intake has 230 students, with the University of Waikato expecting to have 1,000 students enrolled by 2021.

    Students will be offered degrees in finance, computer graphic design and design media, taught by academics from both the University of Waikato and the Zhejiang University City College (ZUCC).

    The institute will also welcome exchange students from the university’s Hamilton and Tauranga campuses.

    The nearly 9,000m2 purpose-built facility is designed with New Zealand design principles, teaching approaches and standards in mind.

    University of Waikato, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alister Jones said the development of the joint institute was the result of the university’s work and investment in China for more than 15 years.

    “The University of Waikato is the first New Zealand university to receive this kind of approval.

    “Over the years, the relationship between ZUCC and the University of Waikato has evolved from student programmes, staff training and a dual degree, to the establishment of this joint institute.”

    The institute has set the foundation for an exciting future for the university’s programmes in China, Professor Jones said.

    “It reflects the hard work that staff in Hamilton and Hangzhou have carried out to get us to this important stage.

    “The joint institute uses digital learning technologies and classroom and building design that encourages social interaction.

    “We also offer our students in China a uniquely New Zealand education experience, which comes from our commitment to Māori language and culture, and the distinct cultural and historical perspective that it brings,” he said.

    ZUCC students

    Several new students were also awarded scholarships to programmes at the joint institute.  

    ENZ’s Regional Director for North Asia, Adele Bryant said it was wonderful to see high-quality students join the programmes at the institute.

    “ENZ has worked with the university since 2014 to support the development of the joint institute, so it’s fantastic to see that this investment has been worthwhile.”

    “The programmes on offer respond to the students’ desire for a global degree that embraces both Kiwi and Chinese cultures, and gives them a truly international qualification.”

    The University of Waikato is now looking to extend its partnership with ZUCC, and work with businesses in Hangzhou and other regions to develop internship opportunities for students.

  • Online visa application update

    Immigration ONLINE – Student will allow international students around the world to apply, pay fees and upload supporting documents online. The new service will be available to full fee paying, scholarship, exchange and English language students.

    Student applicants will still need to provide passports. This can be done offshore through Visa Application Centres or, if the applicant is already in New Zealand, through the INZ Palmerston North office.

    Apply on behalf of functionality – for INZ’s third party partners such as immigration advisers, education agents and education providers – is now set to go live in 2015. Later this year INZ will provide more specifics around the delivery timing in 2015.

    While the new system provides international students with a new way to apply for their visas, it does not affect existing services. All current student visa processes remain.

    Education agents can continue to use current methods of applying on behalf of applicants, and information about Immigration ONLINE – Student is being made available to agents so they can continue to give advice about application options to prospective student.
