    Asia 

    The rapid increase in educational agencies in China, up 242.48% since 2021, has fragmented the market, requiring universities to intensify their efforts in vetting agencies. Despite the challenges, this diversification could lead to improved services and lower costs for students and families. 

     

    North America 

    Canada will cap international student permits at 360,000 for two years, a 35% cut from 2023, with exclusions for master's and PhD students. This move aims to manage the rapid growth of international students, with a review of permit applications in 2025 and changes to post-graduation work permits. 

     

    South America 

    Argentine agencies saw a surge in students traveling abroad in 2022, primarily to the UK, Canada, and the USA. Language courses remained dominant, with rising interest in secondary and higher education sectors and more bookings for junior programs, indicating a recovery in group travel for young learners. 

     

    Europe 

    British students not being ‘squeezed out’ by overseas applicants, say universities 
     
    UK universities deny disadvantaging domestic students in favour of international applicants, highlighting that different entry requirements for foundation programs are not indicative of unfair practices. Data shows increased enrolment of UK students at Russell Group universities, with a balanced intake of international students, emphasizing the importance of global students for financial sustainability amidst fixed domestic tuition fees. 

     

    Africa 

    Africa's job skills gap is widening due to tertiary education not aligning with economic needs, with most countries below the global average for higher education enrolment. Curriculum reforms are needed to include digital and entrepreneurial skills to address unemployment and enhance competitiveness. 

     

  • Announcing the recipients of the Welcome to New Zealand Scholarships

    The initiative was warmly received across Germany, Italy, and France, where it was promoted with the goal of encouraging students to experience the world-class education and unforgettable lifestyle that New Zealand has to offer.

    As part of the campaign, we offered four scholarships, each valued at 5,000 EUR to go toward tuition fees at New Zealand secondary schools or tertiary institutions. These scholarships were designed to support talented and passionate students on their journey to study abroad.  

    A key highlight of the campaign was our collaboration with Air New Zealand, who will generously sponsor return flights for the scholarship recipients. Their support played a pivotal role in making the dream of studying in New Zealand even more accessible for the winners.

    The scholarship attracted over 200 applications – with a majority coming from Germany, followed by Italy and France.  

    During the campaign period, there were 19,965 total views on the Welcome to New Zealand Scholarship page on the Study with New Zealand website.  

    The campaign generated 172 lead enquiries to New Zealand providers (118 enquiries from Germany, 47 enquiries from France and 7 from Italy). These enquiries are sent straight on to the education providers so they can directly engage with the prospective student on their study interests.   

    Meet the recipients 

    Germany 

    The scholarship winner from Germany is 16-year-old Manuel Fink, from Unterhaching (near Munich) 

    Manuel will be heading to Te Puke High School, where he’ll immerse himself in both the academic and cultural experience of studying in New Zealand.  

    A passionate advocate for New Zealand and its education system already, Manuel has his sights set on becoming a pilot — ideally flying for Air New Zealand one day! 

    Our tertiary scholarship recipient from Germany is currently finalising their enrolment, and we look forward to announcing their name once the process is complete. 

    Italy 

    Our Italian scholarship recipient is 16-year-old Lea Sagliaschi from Milan. Lea will be attending Selwyn College and is full of excitement for what she describes as a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in Aotearoa New Zealand. 

    Unfortunately, no recipient could be selected from France this year due to a lack of eligible applications — however, the ENZ Europe team remains committed to engaging with prospective students in the French market and looks forward to stronger participation in future campaigns. 

    ENZ Associate Director of Engagement Europe, Olga Elli, said the campaign raised great awareness of New Zealand’s education system in European priority markets and opened the door to new experiences and opportunities for winners. 

    “We look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to share the unique value of a New Zealand education with European students and partners,” she said. 

     

  • Farm Cove Intermediate and Luoyang International School: Sister Schools

    International education a priority

    At Farm Cove Intermediate (FCI) international education goals are included in our strategic documentation, as this is an area of high priority.  We recognise the importance of our FCI community becoming Asia-equipped with our Asian neighbours now such a significant part of our lives. However, our FCI links with Asia go far beyond obligation and responsibility as we get so much enjoyment from sharing with both students and teachers from other cultures.  Since our first group arrived from Japan 27 years ago, we have experienced the enormous value of celebrating cultural diversity through our hosting of international students from Asia.

    Sister School relationship established

    We’ve particularly enjoyed hosting students and teachers from our sister school, Luoyang International School (LYIS), which is in Luoyang City, Henan Province, China.  Our relationship with LYIS began with a surprise email from their Principal, Jason Tsai, in 2012.  He had visited our school when he was working in Auckland several years ago.  His aim was to connect with an Auckland school and he believed that we would be a good fit to host a group of his students for short visit. We learnt that LYIS was four schools in one, from pre-school to college, and that students boarded five nights a week.  This modern school of 2500 students was built only four years ago and has a focus on English language learning and using a variety of teaching methodologies.  Our planning all came together and, in less than a year, 15 students arrived for a four week stay, accompanied by the principal and a teacher.  The teacher spent her time working alongside our teachers, while the students mixed freely with their classmates and quickly became part of our school.  The visit went so well that they visited us again in 2014, when we signed a sister school agreement to further promote teacher and student exchange and broaden our educational horizons by adding a global perspective. We agreed to join hands as sister schools and seek opportunities for purposeful, genuine and authentic communication.

    Sister school visit enabled

    After an initial scoping visit by four FCI teachers to LYIS, and with the blessing from our Board of Trustees we decided to take a group from FCI to China. Support from ENZ’s New Zealand China Sister Schools Fund enabled us to take two teachers on the visit.

    The trip far exceeded our expectations.  It provided amazing opportunities, was so much fun and changed us all.  There were many high fives, welcome to China hugs, hand-made gifts and songs sung as we mixed with the LYIS students.  They had spent months preparing for us.  We enjoyed lessons in practical science, calligraphy, Chinese music, English, Mandarin and physical education.  A night in homestays allowed our students to get a glimpse into Chinese life; the food was really yummy and the excursions to local points of interest were truly memorable.

    Our trip to LYIS really advanced our sister school relationship.  We have developed life-long friends and deepened our understanding of Chinese culture and the Mandarin language.  Our learning flowed out across our school and the wider community, as we shared our daily experiences through social media while we were on the road, and presented to our whole school on our return.  

    Relationship set to grow

    Planning is underway for a group from LYIS to visit us, and for a larger group from FCI to return to Luoyang in 2017. Short-term teacher exchanges are also being discussed.

    Tips and insights

    If you’re thinking of establishing a sister school relationship in China, here are some things to consider.

    • Do you have the support of your school community for such a venture – including your Boards of Trustees, teachers, parents and the students?  You will need all of these stakeholders to support a successful relationship.

    • Are there good lines of communication between the school in China, or their agent, and your school?  This is essential, so that clear understandings and expectations are established and the potential for any misunderstandings minimised. 

    • How easy is it to travel to the Chinese school from New Zealand and for them to travel to you, and how long will it take to complete the journey? China is vast, and it can take three or more flights plus a lengthy train or coach trip to get to some districts. 

    • How much will it cost each participant?  The cost for families to send their child on the trip, plus the cost of sending the teachers, needs to be calculated. It is important that the group has a clear understanding of what is and is not covered by the trip budget.

    • What sort of preparation is required by students, teachers and parents? Good preparation – especially on the part of the students – is a critical factor as it underpins the success of the trip.  You can support the preparation for Chinese students to come to you by sharing facts, photos, videos and links through social media.  At FCI we put a lot of emphasis on teaching our students to be excellent hosts.  In our experience, students travelling to Chinese schools take about ten weeks of lessons and three family meetings to gain the knowledge and skills that will enable them to have a positive experience.

    • Will your students feel comfortable in the Chinese school environment and vice versa?  China is a very different culture, even more so as you get away from the big cities. Similarly, life in your community is likely to be a totally new experience for the Chinese student.  It is our view that children need to experience cultural differences, but not be challenged to the point where they are overwhelmed. 

    • What does the district around your school and their school offer which would be of interest for the students?  Visiting special points of interest in the local district adds significantly to the experience for the students.

    We really value our sister school relationship with LYIS in China.  By hosting them twice and visiting with both a staff group and later with a student group, we are recognising more and more similarities between our cultures, and learning to appreciate the differences.  Future exchanges will allow us to have more fun, too, as we develop an even greater understanding of one another.

  • First NZ-India Education Week maintains key education connections

    The schedule of online events included panel discussions, specialist masterclasses, events with alumni, a showcase of New Zealand’s Māori culture, and a daily trivia quiz.

    Attendees included the New Zealand High Commissioner His Excellency David Pine, New Zealand and Indian academics, international staff at education providers, agents, Indian media, and government officials from both countries. ENZ’s India Team saw high audience and student engagement at the events, thanks to the online platform’s Q&A and chat functions.

    The NZ-India Education Week is part of the New Zealand Government’s Recovery Plan for the international education sector under the third stream, ‘Transforming to a more sustainable future state’.  

    “The NZ-India Education Week helped us build relationships with India’s education leaders, and keep a New Zealand education experience in the hearts and minds of our Indian students,” ENZ Regional Director – Asia, John Laxon, says.

    Indian students are the second-largest cohort of New Zealand’s overall international student population, behind only China. Pre COVID,  they had also been the fastest growing international student cohort at New Zealand universities.

    The NZ-India week builds on a number of internationalisation initiatives at a government level that will provide a platform for further growth beyond COVID-19. In February 2020 former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters attended the inauguration of the second NZ Centre in the world at Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, supported by all eight New Zealand universities.

    “We are committed to investing in New Zealand’s education links with India for the long-term,” John says. “Indian students enrich our communities and our education institutions are partnering on world-leading research projects. With all the disruption caused this year by COVID-19, it’s very important to us that we continue to strengthen our bonds with India.”

  • Et4e registrations open

    The impressive line-up of international speakers includes Frank Catalano of Intrinsic Strategy, who will bring a US-based view of edtech trends, and Hong Kong and Japan-based Allison Baum of Fresco Capital who will cover edtech investment in the high growth Asian region. 

    Of equally high calibre are the local speakers and panellists: Frances Valintine of The Mind Lab by Unitec will inspire delegates with her use of technology and global approach, and Education Perfect’s CEO and 2014 Internet Entrepreneur of the Year, Craig Smith, will contribute to the panel discussion on developing products and services in response to demand. Sharing tips on how to tackle export markets will be the focus for two panels made up of experienced exporters such as South Pacific Press, ADInstruments/Kura Cloud and more recent entrants to the world of exporting such as Kiwa Digital, as well as successful start-ups such as Boardingware.  

    The diverse and entrepreneurial edtech community is made of up education publishers, game developers, ICT companies and educationalists and the et4e conference provides great opportunities for making connections.  Delegates are often on the lookout for new ideas and partners to collaborate with.  An educational publisher who attended the first et4e conference in 2013 was inspired to form a new company with a game developer. In the space of two years, this has led to the launch and export of a new early childhood literacy product, Bud-E Reading. 

    Et4e is organised by Education New Zealand and Grow Wellington in recognition of the edtech sector’s growing contribution to export growth in international education. New Zealand’s high quality and innovative education system, combined with its entrepreneurial and creative culture, is the perfect ecosystem for the development of leading-edge edtech products and services.  Huffington Post recently cited the Hamilton-based company, CodeAvengers, as one of its top ten online learning sites to watch in 2015.  CodeAvengers founder Michael Walmsley Jr. will be a panellist at this year’s conference.

  • Massey University Worldwide launches in London

    “The Going Global 2015 conference was the perfect platform to launch Massey University Worldwide to the global higher education community, and promote Massey’s growing transnational provision,” says Professor Brigid Heywood, Assistant Vice-Chancellor Research, Academic and Enterprise.

    “Sponsoring the event and having a prominent exhibition site ensured that Massey University Worldwide gained maximum exposure to our key audiences. Through this activity we have secured the interest of a number of potential partners from several international locations including South America, Asia and China, as well as across Europe.”

    “The Going Global conference certainly gave Massey a prominent international profile,” says ENZ Government & Partners General Manager John Goulter who attended the conference. “Many of the big names in international tertiary education were present, looking at present and future trends in the area.”

  • Where education meets technology, cyber-romance blooms

    Among the attendees was a group of New Zealand edtech companies and educators. Representatives of Massey University and Linewize joined the New Zealand Technology Industry Association (NZTech) Chief Executive, Graeme Muller, and Education New Zealand (ENZ) Business Development Manager, Adele Bryant, at the event.  

    “NZTech formed the EdtechNZ Association last year so it was fantastic to offer members the chance to scope one of the biggest edtech events in the world,” said Graeme.  

    Altogether about 20 New Zealand delegates were in Denver which provided the opportunity to learn about global edtech trends, meet prospective partners and scope the possibility of exhibiting at the associated Expo usauin the future.     

    “The conference featured an amazing array of professional learning and collaborative networking opportunities while the expo hall showcased a wide range of edtech tools and solutions,” said Adele.

    Attendees could choose from more than 1,000 sessions in a variety of formats to support all learning styles.

    “The passion of teachers for using edtech tools to engage, manage and extend learners was evident from the start and suggests that the future for edtech in the classroom is bright.

    “A key take away was that educators were looking to spend more time engaging with students and less on developing their own resources, so easy-to-use and educationally sound tools which met learner needs were sought,” said Adele.

    “Supplying that technology is big business. The global edtech sector is estimated to be worth over $100 billion and Kiwi companies are keen to raise their international profile and provide solutions to meet that growing global demand.”

    Kiwi edtech success story Hapara (a cloud-based instructional management system for educational institutions) provided the New Zealand delegation a welcome opportunity to meet and network at a ‘Kiwi Hour’ onsite at the conference.  Among the group were Auckland-based edtech companies, Kami and Booktrack as well as Core Education and Network for Learning. Representatives of the Manaiakalani Trust delivered a Visible Learning session on the programme. 

    The NZTech-led group also attended a breakfast session on the role of schools and edtech companies in professional learning. The group reconnected there with Karen Billings, Vice President of the Education Technology Industry Network (ETIN) of the Software Information and Industry Association (SIIA) who was a speaker at ENZ’s first edtech for export (‘et4e’) conference. 

  • NZIEC 2018 to be held in Wellington

    That’s right, we’re heading to the Coolest Little Capital in the World, Wellington! 

    NZIEC 2018 will be held at our national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 August next year. We hope to see you there.

    The nature of our venue next year means we’ll be changing our standard programme structure to allow more time for delegate movement around the venue between sessions. This affords us the opportunity to Think New about how we structure our conference.

    Scholarships

    All new and renewed memberships of ISANA NZ (as of 30 September 2017) will go into a draw for an ISANA NZ Professional Development Scholarship of $1000 to be used in an ISANA context in 2017/2018, including for the ISANA/ANZSSA Conference.

    Members may also apply for a $1000 scholarship for attending the ISANA/ANZSSA conference in Australia, 5–8 December 2017. Applicants should email isananz@gmail.com, providing information on how this support will help them attend, the value of the conference to them and ideally an endorsement for their application from another member or from their supervisor.   • Keynote speakers inspire at NZIEC

    That was the theme of the 27th New Zealand International Education Conference, held in Wellington on 9-10 August.

    Three keynote speakers gave inspirational addresses to packed audiences at Te Papa.

    Making a global impact

    Yoseph Ayele, chief executive of the Edmund Hillary Foundation, kickstarted the conference by exploring how to make a global impact from New Zealand.

    He gave four practical tips for bringing global citizenship into international education:

    1. Create experiences, rather than content.

    2. Learn to learn. Create an environment where everyone in your organisation is able to see themselves from other people’s perspectives.

    3. Teach your values. Rather than focusing on practical skills, teach students key values such as manaakitanga or innovation.

    4. Invest in diversity. Think about attracting students who may not be able to afford to study here, but who would greatly benefit from a New Zealand education and would want to give back.

    Understanding online behaviour

    Dr Shanton Chang, from the University of Melbourne, shared his knowledge of the online behaviour of students moving between countries.

    His insights included:

    • Providing the right information at the right time to students is crucial.
    • Digital literacy is patchy and often limited to Google searches – even for ‘digital natives’. Don’t assume students will find the information you put online.
    • The layout and visual cues of websites often vary between cultures. Even downloading lecture notes can be a struggle for international students. If you want them to use your website, show them how.
    • Most of us have 7-10 websites we visit frequently. International students may continue to visit their favourite sites from home more than any other sites, particularly if they’re feeling isolated.

    “Put it online and they will come? That is nonsense,” says Dr Chung. “We need to unpack that myth and engage properly.”

    Developing partnerships

    Anna Curzon, chief partner officer at cloud accounting software company Xero, gave advice on developing partnerships to become more globally successful.

     She challenged the audience to ask themselves five important questions:

    1. What is your purpose?
    2. What are you awesome at?
    3. What are the experiences in your value chain that will achieve your purpose?
    4. Do you need to build, buy or partner?
    5. If you need to partner, do you have the right people and culture to grow the relationship? 

    In his address to the conference, Education Minister Hon Chris Hipkins described global citizens as people who can “study, work and live across cultural and national boundaries”.

    For those of us educating the next generation of global citizens, the three areas covered by the key speakers are important elements to consider as we continue to connect New Zealand to the world.
