  • Strengthening education links in US

    The trip included speaking at the world’s largest annual international education conference (NAFSA), as well as interviews with international education media including Chronicle of Higher Education, PIE News, and Times Higher Education. Chris Hipkins also met with US government officials and education professionals from various organisations and institutions.    

    The trip began with an open forum discussion with New Zealand education representatives. Chris Hipkins responded to questions relating to the challenges New Zealand faces as it reopens and rebuilds its international education sector. He then met with Jared Polis, Governor of Colorado. Their discussion touched on commonalities between New Zealand and the State of Colorado and compared approaches to education reform and improving education outcomes for students, particularly those from marginalised backgrounds. They also discussed the importance of research collaboration, particularly as it relates to STEM subjects and the global climate crisis. The meeting ended with agreement that deeper relationships between institutions in Colorado and New Zealand would be beneficial.  

    Speaking at the opening plenary at NAFSA, Chris Hipkins emphasised that New Zealand is once again ready to welcome international students. NAFSA leadership invited the Minister to a private reception after the plenary where they shared their enthusiasm for New Zealand reconnecting with the world. During his day at the Denver Convention Center, the Minister also took a tour of the conference exhibit hall, chatting with both New Zealand and international educators.   

    “It was wonderful for the Minister to get this chance to engage with our education providers and get a broader look at the international education field,” says Lisa Futschek, ENZ’s General Manager International. “It was great for him to see how well-regarded New Zealand’s education system is in the global international education ecosystem.”

    Chris Hipkins then met with Deputy Assistant Secretaries of the US State Department’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He reaffirmed New Zealand’s strong partnership with the US and the international education sector’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through our continued partnership with ECA around the Fulbright and Gilman scholarships, which enable students of limited financial means to study abroad.  

    “The Minister received a very warm welcome from our colleagues at the State Department who were excited to hear our borders are opening,” says Education Counsellor to the US and ENZ’s Regional Director to the Americas, Middle East and Europe, Amy Rutherford. “It’s great to have such a strong relationship with a government’s education agency committed to the same values that we are.”  

    A variety of organisations involved with the delivery of international education in the US also met with Chris Hipkins for a roundtable discussion. This covered the unique opportunities for New Zealand in the international education sector and what sets us apart from other countries and their education systems.

    On the final day of his visit, Chris Hipkins headed to Xero’s Denver headquarters to participate in a roundtable discussion with several principals and school superintendents in surrounding Denver school districts, as well as the New Zealand edtech company ImmerseMe and representatives from JillE Literacy. The conversation touched on the changing face of early childhood and school education due to COVID. Panellists were interested in the approaches and policies being implemented in New Zealand and all were agreed that we would benefit from working together and learning from each other to improve education outcomes. At the end of the roundtable, the Minister witnessed the signing of a seven-year partnership agreement between ImmerseMe and St. Vrain Valley School District, and the gifting of GlobalEd’s JillE Literacy books to roundtable participants.  

    The Minister’s involvement, along with the launch of the I AM NEW global marketing campaign, certainly helped lift New Zealand’s profile at NAFSA. There was a lot of interest inNew Zealand’s announcement of reconnecting with the world, and the eight universities and Te Pūkenga were kept busy meeting with partners each day of the conference.   

    The trip strengthened our connections with the international education community, including with US study abroad professionals recruiting students to study in New Zealand. As study abroad applications begin to open for January 2023 study, thanks to the Minister’s visit to NAFSA, the international education community will be well aware that New Zealand is ready to host students and can provide a unique and high-quality education experience.   

  • Reconnecting at ICEF ANZA 2022

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao attended the conference, alongside Immigration New Zealand and Kiwi education providers.

    This was the largest ICEF ANZA event in its 15-year history. Among the conference's close to 500 in-person participants were 183 education agents representing 61 countries. The top five countries represented at the conference were Colombia, India, Viet Nam, Nepal, and Brazil.

    Agents at the event demonstrated a particular interest in New Zealand and Australia, and they were keen to reconnect with New Zealand education providers and promote New Zealand to prospective students.

  • Welcoming students and tourists to New Zealand as China re-opens borders

    The successful local engagement – which was held both in person and via live stream – had nearly 60 school principals and educators attending in person and attracted more than 21,000 views (you can watch the presentation in Chinese language here). 

    The study tour forum was a part of the 2022 Redefine Asian International Schools and Education Conference (RAISE) in Guangzhou (postponed from December 2022 due to COVID outbreak). The RAISE Conference attracted 500 senior school leaders and teachers from more than 200 bilingual and international schools to discuss together the future of the international education in China.  

    The forum saw ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Greater China, Felix Ye present an overview of New Zealand education for attendees. While Tourism New Zealand’s Strategic Relationship Manager, Alfred Li, and South China Trade Manager, Sandy He, shared an update focused on tourism in New Zealand. 

    Three Auckland-based operators from the education and tourism industry participated virtually and shared their knowledge. Gordon Chang, Founder, Southern Cross Ecotourism & Education Ltd spoke about the New Zealand ecotourism experience they offer their students. Fan Zhou, Director of Go New Zealand International Ltd spoke about how their study tour and short-term study programmes that are designed and developed for New Zealand schools, deliver both fun and education. Lisa Li, General Manager of China Travel Service (NZ) Ltd talked about their offering with over 20 years of award-winning tour services to Chinese customers.   

    ENZ’s Regional Director Greater China, Michael Zhang said marking the first day of China’s borders re-opening with a forum to promote Aotearoa as a study and travel destination was both timely and symbolic.  

    “The removal of quarantine for international arrivals in China has been eagerly anticipated by the education and tourism sectors. This was another example of excellent NZ Inc collaboration – thanks again to the Tourism New Zealand team!  

    “We can now build on the work that NZ Inc and New Zealand providers have done while travel was restricted and step up our engagement with local partners in 2023. Chinese students and travellers are keen to get back out into the world, and we look forward to seeing New Zealand providers back in-market soon”.

  • From the CE: The need to connect remains critical

    Kia ora tatou,

    This month I want to add some colour, and give credit, to the work New Zealand institutions and the Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) team have been undertaking offshore in the continuing drive to raise awareness of NZ education options and opportunities.

    I have mentioned before how much of this activity is often ‘unseen’ from New Zealand, and yet it is pivotal to our marketing and outreach to potential students, their parents, agents, institutional and government partners. The principle focus of this effort is to engage with students, build awareness, and drive interest and enrolment in New Zealand education providers. But that is not all. These activities and events, play an important role of ensuring the sector and its institutions remain connected to key international counterparts and government agencies, lifting the profile of New Zealand as a destination for international education while building long term resilience for the sector.

    Here is a quick update on some of this International activity. Images of some of these interactions are shared in our international photo gallery update here.

    China:   Massey University and ENZ organised a Massey University friends and alumni reception in the New Zealand Embassy in Beijing on 27 August. About 50 participants attended the event including alumni and partners of Massey University. The event was particularly timely following China being the Country of Honour at NZIEC Ki Tua earlier in the month and highlights the important linkages between government to government and institutional relationships in key markets.  

    India:    ENZ was a gold sponsor of the IC3 Institute annual conference, held in Hyderabad on 23 - 24 August. ENZ was joined at the event by representatives of seven New Zealand universities and saw strong interest among counsellors in New Zealand as a study destination. More than 2,000 delegates attended the two-day event.

    Brazil; Colombia - Latin America:  Following on from strong interest shown in New Zealand at the first in person expo at the Australian Centre Expo in Sāo Paulo in August, ENZ’s Director of Engagement Latin America, Javiera Visedo, took the opportunity to reconnect with providers and stakeholders across New Zealand after attending NZIEC Ki Tua. In Auckland, she delivered a market insights session to local ELS and PTE sector representatives highlighting opportunities for growth.

    Malaysia: The first instalment of the Indigenous People Talk series took place on 13 August with Dr Hazel Abraham from AUT joining Malaysian academics to discuss the importance of education and technology to empower indigenous communities in both countries.

    Indonesia: Universities New Zealand signed an arrangement with LPDP (the Indonesian Endowment Fund for Education) on 2 August in Jakarta. The Arrangement was signed by Prof Neil Quigley, University of Waikato Vice Chancellor and Chair of the UNZ International Committee, and Andin Hadiyanto, President director of LPDP. New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia, HE Kevin Burnett joined representatives of all eight New Zealand universities to witness the ceremony.

    South Korea: In three short days from 31 August to 2 September, the ENZ team organised an Agent seminar, a New Zealand Education night reception and the New Zealand Education Fair. All were well attended and interest from attendees was high.

    Thailand: Similarly, in a compressed week from 25 - 30 August, the ENZ Thai Team coordinated Agent seminars, the New Zealand Education Fair in Bangkok, and follow-up school visits and agent fairs in the Thai provinces of Chiang Mai, Phuket and Chonburi.

    Vietnam: In the lead up to the New Zealand Education Fairs which will take place in October, the ENZ Vietnam team participated in the GSE Education Fair by hosting a ‘Study with New Zealand’ session on 9 September.

    Within New Zealand, we were delighted to welcome the first cohort of students from Ichihara City to undertake a study tour at Waimea College in Nelson from 6 - 20 August. Reinforcing the importance of the study trip, ENZ’s Lisa Futschek joined the Mayor of Ichihara in Wellington to discuss further strengthening of the Education Cooperation Arrangement with Ichihara City that was originally signed in 2020.

    Our sector engagement team continued its briefings of key sub-sector peak bodies to outline the ENZ Annual Plan and how it impacts their sector. This included briefings for the SEIBA Board, QTI and ITENZ, and English New Zealand. This followed briefings early in August with international directors of New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga. Feedback from the bodies was appreciative of the explanation and sharing of the plan, with questions raised at the briefings a key part of the transparent and helpful feedback we received.

    The urgency for the international education sector to address challenges and opportunities of the future continued on from the NZIEC Ki Tua conference in mid-August  through to the recent ITENZ conference held in Christchurch on 12 and 13 September.  The PTE sector has faced some of the most challenging conditions in recent times, but the determination of those attending to identify and take opportunities to regain their previous strength was impressive and bodes well for the sector’s path to a brighter future.

    On the marketing front, visits to the Study with New Zealand (SWNZ) website continued to perform well with the total number of active sessions lifting nine percent to 125,203 during August. Of particular interest was the strong interest from Thailand which overtook India in August as the main source of interest with a spike in activity before and during the Education Fair in Bangkok. As we move through the year, other markets are also expected to show lifts in activity associated with local market fairs and promotion.

    This week also saw ENZ host the first Tertiary Education Institution Manaaki Scholarship workshop in Auckland since ENZ took over the management of the scholarships programme last November. The workshop was attended by all eight universities and Te Pūkenga, with support and involvement from MFAT, Manaaki alumni and Skills Consulting Group. The scholarships not only benefit the students, but also the sector who gain access to many international students through this unique programme.

    As I look back on this month’s review it is obvious to me that to continue the rebuild of the international education sector for New Zealand the need to connect remains a critical part of the recovery. Whether it is happening in other countries or here in New Zealand, it is important to remember we are a ‘people’ business – we need to get out there and connect. Safe connecting.

  • High satisfaction rates amongst valuable insights collected from NZIEC KI TUA 2023 post-event survey

    As standard practice for our events, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) sends out a post-event survey to help us in planning for future conferences and would like to extend a big thank you to all those who took the time to share their feedback with us.  

    Manager Global Events and Agents, Janine Huxford, said that the information we gather via these surveys is of huge value to her team as planning has already started for NZIEC KI TUA 2024.  

    The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive and 88% of attendees reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their experience at NZIEC KI TUA 2023. We also received a net promoter score of +27 which is well above the events industry’s benchmark of +10 which shows strong customer engagement and advocacy levels.  

    While these satisfaction rates are helpful and show that we are hitting the mark with most attendees, we really like to delve a bit deeper into the areas which haven’t quite met the delegates’ expectations. For example, satisfaction was slightly higher for those attending from the universities vs the school sector so we will be reviewing aspects of future schedules including the relevance of the sessions and making sure this is more evenly spread for all areas of the sector.  

    Also, there was feedback from some delegates that the app did not work as well as it could have. We have fed that information back to the developers who have confirmed that development work is scheduled to improve the mobile app. A future release is expected later this year which we expect will improve next year’s conference app.” added Janine.  

    In summary, the key findings from the survey were:  

    • Overall, 88% of attendees reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their experience at NZIEC KI TUA 2023. 3.5% reported not being satisfied with their experience. 

    • There was some variation in overall satisfaction with NZIEC KI TUA within the sector: Those affiliated with a university were statistically more likely to be very/satisfied with their experience (95%) than those affiliated with a school (86%) 

    • Despite evidence that those affiliated with a university were more likely than those with a school to report overall satisfaction with NZIEC KI TUA, the NPS for schools (+25) was higher than that for universities (14%).  

    • All keynote sessions were perceived to be of high quality by most respondents, with few responding negatively. A small proportion of attendees rated the sessions by Dr Hinemoa Elder (18%), Yemi Penn (13%), and Kaila Colbin (7%) as ‘fair’. 

    • Among networking opportunities at the conference delegates were most satisfied with opportunities to reconnect with sector colleagues (88% very/completely satisfied), followed by opportunities to meet new people (84%) and engage with partners (70%). 

    • Among experiences of the conference, delegates were most satisfied with the helpfulness of the organising staff (98% very/completely satisfied), followed by the organisation of the event (87%), quality of the sessions (74%), and relevance of the sessions (65%)  

    • The relevance of the sessions (30%), quality of the sessions (22%), and the event organisation (18%) contributed the most to people’s response to the Net Promoter Score question. This means that they are the most important factors in people’s experiences for their likelihood to recommend NZIEC KI TUA to others. 

    • Around half of the respondents felt more or much more confident that the New Zealand international education sector is ‘moving in the right direction’ (54%) and that it is resilient (53%). Only 7% felt less confident in either.

  • Aotearoa New Zealand Indigenous led Education Technology

    Founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas, this was the first time South by Southwest® (SXSW®) has been hosted in the South Pacific. Taking place from 15 to 20 October, the conference celebrated the convergence of technology, film, music, education, and culture. 

    With kaupapa Māori at the heart of the Aotearoa Whare, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) was asked to support a showcase of Aotearoa Indigenous Education Technology (EdTech) companies in a panel conversation. Represented on the panel were four EdTech Founders who whakapapa Māori, from TŌNUI Collab based in Te Tairāwhiti (Gisborne), Tiaki Global based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), Code Avengers based in Waikato (Hamilton) and ARA Journeys based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). 

    The theme of Aotearoa NZ Indigenous-led Education Technology was explored by this group of Māori owned companies. Their initiatives have indigenous researchers, designers, and content developers creating innovative digital learning experiences for indigenous learners, their whānau and communities, and learning experiences for non-indigenous learners that draw on indigenous knowledge and know-how.

    Adrienne Bonell, Public Diplomacy Manager, MFAT said that it was a fascinating panel, expertly moderated by Duane Grace (Tiaki Global). 

    “The passion, smarts and energy Shanon O’Connor, Amber Taylor, and Hamish Day contributed as panellists on this vital kaupapa was palpable in the room. 

    It was obvious the crowd felt the same given the number of pātai  (questions) and that we ran out of time in the end, said Adrienne.  

    Supporting our Māori and Pasifika EdTech community is essential for the New Zealand education sector, as it enriches our curriculum with diverse perspectives and aligns to our community values. It also enhances Aotearoa New Zealand’s distinct and unique indigenous voice in the world, uplifting our global competitiveness. 

    Amber Taylor of ARA Journeys said that the connections made during the conference are starting to bear fruit. 

    “Since the conference, I have received emails from a few attendees who expressed a keen interest in our projects and initiatives.  

    We are excited about the possibilities they hold for our future collaborations and expanding our reach to audiences beyond our current business sphere," added Amber.

  • From the CE: China, the GCC, and a warm welcome

    Tēnā koutou katoa 

    Recently I arrived back to New Zealand after a whirlwind visit to Beijing to attend the China Annual Conference and Expo for International Education (CACIE).  

    While there, I was delighted to announce that New Zealand will be the Country of Honour at next year’s conference in 2025. New Zealand and China share a long and important relationship - it remains New Zealand’s largest trading partner and CACIE is the biggest international education conference in China – connecting professionals, researchers and international education stakeholders. 

    Overall, the visit was extremely useful and included engagements with the President of China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), senior Chinese Government officials, opinion leaders and media, as well as visits to education providers and meetings with New Zealand Inc Agency heads. I also really enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with ENZ’s China team in market. 

    Ed Tuari from our leadership team has also just returned to New Zealand after undertaking a market confirmation exercise in the Middle East region. The purpose of the exercise was to connect with key stakeholders and partners working in the region to establish what opportunities are available in international education, and to explore what level of resource ENZ may need to allocate to the region in the future. His travels took him to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, State of Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman.  

    Some good news to report on New Zealanders’ perceptions of international education and international students in New Zealand. The results from our latest survey show that 72 percent of respondents believed that international education and international students benefit New Zealand.  This is similar to previous years' scores which is promising.  

    For the first time this year, the annual survey asked respondents if they wanted to see more or fewer international students in the country. Forty-one percent of those surveyed said they would like to see more, with another 36 percent supporting the same number of students. 82 percent of New Zealanders agreed that international students contribute to our cultural diversity, with 79 percent feeling they help local students learn about other cultures and ways of life, as well as contributing to local businesses during their studies. A thriving and sustainable international education sector needs the support of New Zealanders to create a welcoming environment for international students, so the results are pleasing to see.

  • College of Creative Arts “foots it” with the world’s best

    The US National Association of Schools of Art and Design has granted the College “substantial equivalency”, the most comprehensive international benchmark of quality in art and design education in the world. The College now officially sits alongside such world-leading schools as Rhode Island School of Design, Cranbrook Academy of Art and CalArts.

    “The College of Creative Arts is another great example of a New Zealand education institution footing it with the world’s best,” says Kathryn McCarrison, Education New Zealand’s General Manager Marketing and Channel Development.

    “Based on what we know about how international students make their choices over where to study, the college’s substantial equivalency award is a potential game changer for them.

    “The key drivers of choice all relate to quality and reputation – does my institution choice advance my career prospects? How does it stack up quality wise? What’s its reputation and how does it rank internationally?

    “For this reason institutions need to make the most of any international recognition.”

    Kathryn says this type of recognition is also invaluable when it comes to Education New Zealand’s job of promoting New Zealand as a study destination.

    The College’s School of Design is already ranked top in Australasia by Red Dot, the global design award organization.

  • Kiwi robots breakthrough in China schools

    At the 2013 world robotics championship New Zealand high schools won three of the five high school divisions and went on to win the World Championships.

    Students from Glenfield College and teachers from Glenfield College, Westlake Girls High School and Massey University, led by Chris Hamling, National Manager of Kiwibots were invited by Tianjin Association for Science and Technology (TAST) to attend last month’s Tianjin Science Week.

    They visited five schools in the northern Chinese city. As well as showing off their robots, the teachers also did a number of presentations about New Zealand’s education system on the theme of “How we make winning students”.

    Chris says “We wanted to build up from a simple description of how robotics are used in the classroom and then go on to illustrate how New Zealand's education system emphasizes practical work.

    “Our ESOL support is important in allowing international students to find their feet quickly and that our universities are an important part of our education pipeline.”

    The Kiwi party was followed from school-to-school by CCTV, China’s largest television channel.

    Earlier this year TAST approached Chris wanting New Zealand schools to take part because China, like New Zealand, wants to to accelerate scientific progress and develop new technology, popularize scientific knowledge and create an environment for innovation. Chris says discussions between TAST and the Kiwibots led them to conclude that “it is primarily because of our education system that we are so successful”.

    Education New Zealand Senior Education Manager in Beijing, Stijn Te Strake, says “stimulating creativity through education is a recurring theme in dialogue with China and other Asian countries looking towards technological innovation to advance rapidly developing economies.

    “Kiwibots is a great demonstration of New Zealand’s strengths in these areas, in a fun and engaging manner that all can relate to.

    “During the visit we saw New Zealand and Chinese students interacting and learning from each other, with their passion for science and technology as the basis of common understanding.”

    Education New Zealand (ENZ) supported the Kiwibots visit to Tianjin. Last December ENZ also supported the Asia-Pacific Robotics Championship held in Auckland to leverage and promote New Zealand as a study destination, particularly for middle and high school students with an interest in technology.

    More than 500 students in nearly 150 teams competed in this championship, with 70 percent coming from offshore, mostly China (77 teams) but also Hong Kong and Singapore.

  • Education in the spotlight during Governor-General’s visit to Viet Nam

    Sir Jerry Mateparae attended two major education events during this visit.  In Hanoi the New Zealand Embassy and ENZ hosted a “New Zealand Education Connections” event, which for the first time ever in Viet Nam, brought together New Zealand alumni from different parts of the Vietnamese economy and society.

    About 250 private students, NZ Aid scholarship recipients and recipients of English Language Teaching for Officials (ELTO) were represented at the event. New Zealand teachers in Viet Nam were also well represented.

    The Governor-General spoke about the value of education as a bridge builder for long term relationships and connections between the two countries.  In all of his meetings with senior Vietnamese leaders and officials stronger education collaboration was emphasised as a key priority for New Zealand’s relationship with Viet Nam.

    In Ho Chi Minh City (which accounts for about 60 percent of all Vietnamese students to New Zealand), Sir Jerry Mateparae delivered an address to 170 students, staff and senior Vietnamese officials at the University of Science, which is part of the Vietnamese National University. The University has nine faculties with around 652 professors and more than 16,000 students.  

    Auckland University of Technology has a joint programme with the University of Science, delivering a Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences (BCIS). There are 130 students enrolled in the programme, in addition to the 250 graduates of this programme.

    At this event, the Governor-General spoke about the importance of partnerships in education, not only between governments, but also between New Zealand and Vietnamese institutions.  Senior officials present expressed the hope that in future there would be more New Zealand and Vietnamese universities engaged in the kind of collaboration demonstrated by AUT and the University of Science, Ho Chi Minh City.Both events attracted plenty of media attention, and helped to raise the profile of New Zealand as an education partner for Viet Nam in advance of the New Zealand education fairs taking place in September.
