  • Pulling in for a roadmap pit stop

    More than 200 participants from all sectors met across five centres to discuss where we are on the roadmap journey, what’s changed, and where we go next.

    The Strategic Roadmaps were developed in 2014 following extensive discussion and workshops to create a roadmap, or strategic plan, to achieve the 2025 goals for the international education industry.

    “It was good to reconvene and recognise the significant achievements of the past year, as well as look out to future challenges and consider what they could mean for the strategic choices that were identified in 2014,” says Greg Scott, ENZ Business Development Manager.

    “All 2014 strategic choices were put on the table to revisit and reconsider, and we’re working through the wealth of feedback industry gave us.”

    Feedback shows that diversifying markets, balancing growth across New Zealand, as well as strengthening cross-sector collaboration and pathways, continuing market-led product development, and growing capability are common top priorities.

    More detail on the reprioritised strategic choices by sector will be available in early 2016.

    Clive Jones, ENZ General Manager Business Development, says the pit stops showed a bright outlook: “Over 85% of participants indicated that they are more optimistic about their international education business than a year earlier, which is a good way to begin a new year.”

  • Economic valuation of international education underway

    An update of the economic valuation of the international education industry is currently underway in New Zealand.

    Education New Zealand is responsible for commissioning an economic valuation analysis  of the international education industry. This research provides the quantitative evidence for the industry’s contribution to New Zealand.

    Infometrics and National Research Bureau have been commissioned by ENZ to estimate the current size of the international education industry including expenditure by foreign students in New Zealand. The research includes surveying international students (and in some cases their guardians), via either a web-based or paper survey.

    The valuation follows a similar exercise in 2012 /2013 when students were also surveyed.  An interim valuation was produced in 2014 which valued the international education industry, at $2.85 billion, supporting more than 30,000 jobs.

    An updated economic valuation report is expected in October 2016.

  • Otago Chemistry lecturer attracts a crowd at Kuching fair

    Jane Goh, ENZ’s Marketing and Strategic Relations Manager, Malaysia, said that around 150 students, parents and teachers in Kuching met with representatives from higher learning institutions, high schools and polytechnics from New Zealand at the fair.

    These included Riccarton High School, UC International College (UCIC), University of Canterbury, Lincoln University, The Ara Institute of Canterbury, University of Otago, The University of Auckland, University of Waikato, New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) and Academic Colleges Group (ACG).

    During the fair, Dr David Warren from the University of Otago gave a lecture on the relevance of chemistry today to teach students how best to study and excel in the subject.

  • 2016 Code of Practice resources now available

    A key piece of the collateral is a special PDF that has been designed to make the Code of Practice more accessible to the sector – specifically signatories, agents, international students and their families, and relevant agencies.

    Alongside this, NZQA has created a brochure that summarises the Code and provides important information for international students (at both a secondary and tertiary level), and their families and caregivers.

    The pdfs and brochure are available in English as well as Arabic, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, simplified Chinese, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese.

    After widespread consultation across the sector, NZQA has also developed a Code of Practice toolbox, with the intention of helping signatories meet their obligations. The toolbox includes examples of good practice collected from around the sector that can be tailored and applied to different organisations.

    The Code of Practice toolbox can also be found on the NZQA website. It will develop over time, reflecting the material submitted by the sector.

  • Residence Programme Changes

    On 12 October 2016, the number of points required to be selected to apply for residence under the Skilled Migrant Category was raised from 140 to 160. Changes were also made to the way applicants prove their English language ability.

    No changes were made to Post Study Work Visa options.

    Once students have graduated, they may want to stay on and work in New Zealand for a while to gain work experience, or even consider staying in New Zealand permanently. There are pathways that make it easier for those graduates to stay, if they meet certain conditions. You can find out more here.

  • International students take to the field

    The AIMS Games International Sporting Championship is a pathway to sporting achievement for New Zealand students 11 to 13 years old. The games are held annually in Tauranga in September and have become a huge success. In 2016, the AIMS Games hosted more than 9,000 competitors from 275 schools, competing across 21 sports from rugby to swimming to aerobics.

    They are often one of the first times young athletes can test their skill at a national level.

    Building on its international recognition, the AIMS Games has now teamed up with Education Tauranga to create a programme specifically for international students. The programme will see New Zealand schools hosting teams from across the globe, allowing international students to experience New Zealand school life while training for the AIMS Games.

    Anne Young, Manager of Education Tauranga, said the development has a lot of potential to draw more students to New Zealand.

    “Combining a classroom experience with the games is really exciting," said Anne.

    "International students will meet New Zealand kids from throughout the country, and then be able to compete against their new friends at one of the biggest high-level youth sporting events in the Southern Hemisphere.”

    The games also aim to foster a positive attitude to sport. They aim to create a supportive culture amongst participating schools where success is celebrated, participation is encouraged and new friendships are formed.

    Tournament Director Vicki Semple is looking forward to hosting schools from different parts of the world.

    “For New Zealand students to be able meet and appreciate different cultures in a sporting context gives the games another flavour. 

    “I’m sure many lifelong international friendships will be made,” she said.

  • Earthquake and tsunami safety messages available in 22 languages

    The 7.8m Kaikoura earthquake, tsunami, and aftershocks in November 2016 highlighted New Zealand’s risk of natural disaster. While we can’t predict when one will happen, recognising the warning signs and knowing the correct, life-saving action to take during a disaster can keep you and your loved ones safe.

    In December, Civil Defence launched the earthquake and tsunami safety campaign, including a suite of resources such as posters and factsheets in 22 languages, which can be found on their website here (scroll to the bottom for the translated resources).

    To keep your community safe, particularly those new to or visiting New Zealand, these posters and factsheets should be displayed in visitor centres, accommodation (both in rooms and common areas) as well as tourist attractions. Banner advertisements and videos are also available to share.

  • NZQA consults on publishing statutory action

    This is a move towards greater transparency and accountability.

    Publishing this information would provide domestic and international students and the wider public with more complete and accurate information on any regulatory decisions made by NZQA in relation to the activities of a non-university tertiary education organisation or a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016 (the Code).

    Feedback from stakeholders will be analysed before NZQA provides a summary of findings and relevant decisions in June 2017.

  • Sister schools go from strength to strength

    • Sister-school relationships are a great way to connect on a personal level as well as a professional one

    The sister-school agreement was officially signed back in 2015, and since then, the schools have alternated sending a cohort of students and staff to each campus.

    Representatives from Chaotian Elementary School, including principal Kong Hong, visited New Zealand for the first time in 2016. During their visit to Owairoa Primary School, they discussed and compared educational philosophies, school management issues, teaching strategies, curriculum and cultural differences, as well as potential synergies and future co-operation between the schools.

    Last month was Owairoa Primary School’s turn to travel to Guangzhou to share ideas with the principal and Board of Trustee members at Chaotian School. The Chaotian students were on hand to present musical numbers, martial arts, stories and art works for their guests – as well as drone acrobatics.

    Principal of Owairoa Primary School, Alan McIntyre, said the Chaotian students were proud to perform for the Kiwi visitors, and were looking forward to having their turn to go abroad again.

    “The Chaotian students couldn't contain themselves about the prospect of visiting us in New Zealand later this year – they were so excited.”

    The visit also gave Alan an opportunity to try out principal Kong’s office chair for size, and the two talked about the possibility of a school principal exchange in future.

    As part of the ongoing relationship, negotiations are currently underway to set up an Owairoa classroom at Chaotian school, and a Chaotian classroom at Owairoa school.

    However, Alan said the key to a strong sister-school dynamic is finding lighter moments in each visit to humanise their relationship.

    “In New Zealand, we refer to a person by their first name and then surname, so in China where the names are reversed, we were addressing Principal Kong Hong as Principal Hong Kong!

    “This cultural difference allowed us the cheeky opportunity to present her with a Miss Hong Kong sash and crown. The hilarity of the moment really helped cement our schools’ friendship and did so much for China–New Zealand relations,” said Alan.
