  • Diwali celebrations light up New Zealand campuses

    It was a wonderful week of Diwali across New Zealand campuses as students and education institutions came together to celebrate the festival of lights.  

    AUT lights up for Diwali 

    The sights, sounds and colours of Diwali were on full display at AUT’s recent Diwali Festival.   

    With the largest cohort of international students from India in New Zealand, AUT’s Diwali Festival celebrated the incredible contribution Indian students make to life at AUT.   

    Pro Vice-Chancellor International, Professor Guy Littlefair, said the event enriches their campus culture and showcases the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.   

    “Our incredible Diwali event was a wonderful opportunity for our entire university to celebrate our Indian students and the richness and joy of Indian culture,” Professor Littlefair said.   

    “We are proud of our growing reputation throughout India for our wide range and quality of study programmes, for being the university of technology in New Zealand, and for our great student support, accessibility to academic staff, employability, and student success.   

    “India is an extraordinarily important partner country to us, but more importantly our Indian students are an extremely valued part of our AUT family and the unique perspective and rich culture they bring to us are treasured by all our staff and students.”  

     

    Students lead Diwali celebrations at Wintec | Te Pūkenga

    This year, the Diwali celebrations at Wintec | Te Pūkenga City and Rotokauri campuses were completely ākonga (student)-led, making them even more special than usual. Although facilitated by the International Student Support team, the events were entirely hosted by ākonga, from the MCs to all the entertainment.  

    Unmesha Veetil, International Student Services Advisor, said the events were vibrant and high energy and a real testament to the students.  

    “The MCs did a great job of engaging the audience and getting them singing along, the dance performances and magic tricks were stunning and there were even talented students doing henna designs. On the request of the audience there was a final open dance floor which got many from the audience dancing too and proved lots of fun.”

    The true spirit of the festival was also on full display as a diverse, multicultural communities organised the festivities with much generosity and kaitiakitanga.

    The Chinese Postgraduate Society volunteered for the Auckland Diwali Festival as eco warriors, helping make the celebration as eco-friendly as possible. 

    “It was a great experience for us to immerse in a different culture and make valuable contributions,” Wilson Pan, President of the Chinese Postgraduate Society said.  

  • Meet the team: Marie Clark, Director Insights

    Tell us about your role, the team you lead, and what your team does at ENZ for the international education sector. 

    I’m Marie, Director Insights for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao. I lead the research and market analysis to provide insights that underpin ENZ’s work. This includes student experience, brand health, economic value, and New Zealander’s perceptions of international education.  

    We are a small team of five analysts and researchers but pack a lot of punch if I do say so myself. We are lucky enough to work with a range of teams across ENZ as well as the wider sector. Our findings are shared with our stakeholders and our education partners so that they can use this to make informed decisions about the future delivery of their international education products and services.  Much of our work is on an annual basis, meaning that each year we are looking for any small changes that might turn into long-term term trends. For example: 

    • in the international student experience survey, we want to look more at the people and connections and mental healthIf we spot changes, providers may like to adjust their support for students. 

    • through our perceptions work we want to understand, as international students return to New Zealand, if the way New Zealanders perceive the challenges and benefits of international students is changing. If we spot changes, we will work with providers to bring those benefit stories to the forefront.  

    Where were you working before joining the ENZ team?  

    I am a returning New Zealander, having spent the last 15 years in the United Kingdom, working in a range of insights, marketing, and communications roles in higher education. My most recent UK role was at Independent Higher Education, the representative and lobbying body for independent higher education, professional training and international pathway providers. Previously I worked for a policy communications consultancy, Hobsons, now QS Enrolment Solutions, and The PIE. 

    Tell us what the team has been working on since you joined and how the sector can access this?  

    I joined ENZ in October 2022 and since then have led the delivery of several key pieces of research and reports. Some recent highlights for me are releasing our insights on the 2013 – 2023 (part year) International Student Enrolment data, 2023 International Student Experience Survey and the 2023 New Zealanders Perceptions of International Students 2023  

    We share all of our research, data and insights on ENZ's Intellilab and I would encourage anyone to sign up, if you haven't already. We also post links to past webinars that we have held in which we share our latest research and insights.  

    For those that are interested in being able to take a closer look at the data, we do share some data that has been officially released to Tableau Public.   

    What can the sector expect to see from the Insights team in the next 12 months? 

    Our team will be very busy over these next 12 months as we undertake a range of surveys and then following the fieldwork will be diving into the data and compiling insights reports, presentations and hosting webinars for the sector to take them through thisTo name just a few taking place over the next two quarters, we will be working on the: International Student Experience Survey 2024, Brand Health 2024, a sector survey, agent survey, and the New Zealanders perception of International Education 2024 survey. Phew!

    Tell us what you like to do when you’re out of the office and not nose-deep in international education data...

    I am still enjoying settling back into New ZealandIt’s a period of both discovery and rediscovery.  Weekends are spent catching up with old friends and spending plenty of time with family, adjusting my two young children to the kiwi lifestyleI am a convert to cycling for transport and can be seen zooming all over Wellington, and sometimes further afield, on my electric cargo bike. 

  • Does it matter if New Zealand wasn’t a student’s #1 choice? Join the Insights and Student Experience teams and find out!

    In this session, Director of Insights, Marie Clark, Insights Analyst, Dr Tom Vardy, and Student Experience Manager, Ross Crosson, will give an overview of the key findings of the survey and will also exclusively preview our deep dive into the questions on decision making and country choiceAnswering the question: Does it matter if New Zealand wasn’t an international student’s first choice? 

    In the 2024 International Student Experience Survey, students lifted their positive rating of their experience to 86 percent, two percent higher than the previous year. In addition, the number of students who rated their experience as “excellent” lifted eight percent to 41 percent.     As many education providers are looking to take advantage of new opportunities, this webinar is an important first chance to identify what additional support for international students may be required for the 2025 academic year.

    In the year ended December 2024 New Zealand exported $398.02 million of education related travel to India and imported $3.9 million, representing a trade balance of $394.12 million and a total trade value of $401.92 million.

    International student enrolments from India  

    Between January and August 2024, overall international student enrolments from India grew 34% to 10,640 from 7,930 enrolments in the full year period for 2023. Enrolments for universities grew around 64%, private training establishment enrolments grew 36% and Te Pūkenga enrolments from India grew 15% over the same period.  

    86% of Indian students in New Zealand rate overall experience positively  

    Indian students are thriving in New Zealand. The New Zealand International Student Experience Survey 2024 reveals that 86% of Indian students rated their overall experience in New Zealand positively.

  • Get ready for unprecedented profile of NZ education in China

    We also need to make a leap in scale.

    We can’t do that with a business as usual approach.

    This realisation is behind the Dragons in a Distant Land documentary now set to screen before 650 million people in China from August 2013.

    The documentary highlights the experiences of Chinese considering studying in New Zealand and of successful alumni who have returned to China.

    Education New Zealand (ENZ) General Manager of Marketing and Channel Development Kathryn McCarrison says the two-part documentary (renamed from Dragons in the Land of the Long White Cloud) is designed to be a “game changer” for New Zealand’s student attraction marketing in China and will boost referrals to Chinese agents and New Zealand institutions. The documentary seeks to capture parents’ attention; students aged 16-25 will be targeted by a digital campaign.

    “We’ll get unprecedented coverage of New Zealand education in China with the documentary.

    “We all need to get ready – the Chinese networks will only give three days’ notice of the first on-air date.

    “To get full value out of the investments in the documentary, we – that is ENZ and the industry – need to run an integrated campaign leveraging each other’s work.”

    ENZ is developing marketing materials to help institutions plan their marketing in China following the screenings of Dragons in a Distant Land on national and regional television.

    These materials will be made available to institutions.

    ENZ’s production company, the Gibson Group, is negotiating with Chinese networks to have the documentary screened in August. The associated student dragons’ marketing campaign will be ready on 1 August 2013 to support the launch of the documentary.

    Key features of the campaign include:

    • Using alumni and agents on Weibo (the Twitter of China) to post about studying in New Zealand and direct people to the campaign’s website

    • Creating posts for targeted internet forums and bulletin board sites

    • Posting content to Youku, the YouTube of China.

    To directly engage the target audience – parents, prospective international students and education agents - there will be:

    • Video advertising targeting social networking and video sites and  top student portals

    • Performance display advertising.

    ENZ’s current Baidu search campaign will be reconfigured to ensure relevant searches are directed to the student dragon’s campaign website.

    Kathryn says the traffic from the student dragon’s campaign website will go to the New Zealand Educated website. “Your information on it will likely be the first impression of your institution for many Chinese visitors. 

    “We recommend you check out your institution’s page on newzealandeducated.com very soon to ensure your content is up to date.”

    Closer to the launch date ENZ will make available key messages for each episode, press releases, a media question and answer and photography from the documentary. The final media buying plan, showing when and where ENZ will be advertising in China as part of the campaign, will also be available to help institutions with their own media buying.

  • Immigration ONLINE-Student goes live

    The new service is available to full fee paying, scholarship, exchange and English language students. Students will find the login box here

    Student applicants will still need to provide passports, either through Visa Application Centres offshore or, if the applicant is already in New Zealand, through the INZ Palmerston North office.

    Once label-less visas (e-visas) become widely available in 2015, most applicants will no longer need to send in their passports along with their applications.  

    Next year, INZ’s third party partners such as immigration advisers, education agents and education providers will be able to apply for visas on behalf of their student clients.

    Until then, all current application methods will remain available. Advisers and providers can help students complete the form, but for now, the student must submit it until ‘apply on behalf ‘becomes available.

  • Student ambassadors appointed in Christchurch

    “The Student Ambassador programme is one of several initiatives aimed at better supporting international students so that they make the most of their time in Christchurch and perhaps encouraging them to stay longer in the region,” said Richard Ashmore, International Student Pathway Coordinator with Christchurch Educated.

    “It is also a great personal development opportunity for the new ambassadors who will receive training and the chance to expand their own international networks.”

    The inaugural group of ambassadors is made up of 14 students from New Zealand, Australia, Afghanistan, India, China, Japan, Malaysia, Russia and the Philippines.

    “Some of the New Zealanders in the group benefitted from similar programmes during their own overseas study experience and want to help others in the same way,” said Richard.

    Izzie Guo arrived in Christchurch in 2009 totally unprepared for the shock of landing in a foreign environment with only a limited understanding of the language. She was fortunate to have amazing support from her homestay mum and senior classmates to help her adjust to a lifestyle, language and living environment vastly different to the one she had left behind in China. Now Izzie is looking forward to helping other international students faced with the challenges that come with embarking on a learning experience in a new country.

    “I have always wanted to help students new to Christchurch. I remember when I first arrived. I had many difficulties and so many people helped me in many ways. I want to give a little help and hopefully that can make a difference,” said Izzie.

    The student ambassadors are studying at mostly tertiary institutions including the University of Canterbury, Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, Southland Institute of Technology, along with Middleton Grange and Kaiapoi high schools. 

    The student ambassadors were received into the programme by Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel in mid-October. In addition to their mentoring duties, the ambassadors will represent Christchurch Educated and the city of Christchurch at official functions and international education visits and events. They will start in their roles as fully trained ambassadors in January 2015.

    Interest in the roles was so high that a second group of ambassadors will be inducted into the programme next year.

  • Student voices celebrate the NZ-ASEAN relationship

    ENZ has been running Student Voice since 2012, providing a platform for international students to share their experiences and views on studying in New Zealand.

    This year’s event was jointly run by ENZ and the MFAT, and domestic students were also invited to take part, in recognition of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and ASEAN. 

    Thirty international students representing all 10 ASEAN countries joined with the 10 New Zealand students who were recipients of the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia, Understanding South East Asia programme. Together, the students took part in an interactive two-day programme aimed at better understanding the student experience. They heard from sector experts including Simon Chu from the University of Otago around the importance of alumni networks; Lester Khoo from Auckland University of Technology on how a New Zealand education can launch careers in ASEAN; and Jimmy Walsh from Beca on the value of ASEAN-NZ links in business.

    The students also had the opportunity to talk informally about their experiences.  We will share more on this in a later edition of E-news, but here are some of the comments for starters:

    “Studying in New Zealand has opened up my soul. The past two years at the University of Otago had a significant impact on my character building. The University of Otago has moulded me into a more expressive, responsible, and confident person. New Zealand has also taught me to seize the opportunities whenever you have a chance because you will never know where that opportunity might lead you.”

    My participation in ASEAN Student Voice 2015 only reinforced my belief that studying in NZ gives me that well-rounded academic experience that I can take home to enrich my contribution to Indonesia's development."

    A real community has built up around this year’s Student Voice, and participating students set up a Facebook page to keep their connections going.

    The programme culminated in an evening reception attended by around 100 people, including Hon Steven Joyce, the students and their host institutions, officials on the English Language Training for Officials programme, Heads of ASEAN missions and government representatives as well as people from ENZ, MFAT and the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

    Students from Wainuiomata High School’s Kapa Haka Group, Te Tira Whakaau, brought New Zealand’s powerful cultural history alive with a performance at the reception. Te Tira Whakaau finished first overall in the regional secondary school Te Awakairangi ki Wairarapa Kapa Haka competition last month.

  • Competition winners and interns enjoy trip of a lifetime

    A separate competition was launched in India called ‘Fashion for Fleming’, requiring fashion students to design a t-shirt for ENZ’s Brand Ambassador, Stephen Fleming. The competition encouraged students from India to incorporate creative designs showcasing the unique values of both countries. The winner received a two week internship at AUT’s Fashion School.

    As well, over the past couple of months, two students from Viet Nam and India, and one each from Indonesia and Malaysia undertook all-expenses paid internships at various institutes in New Zealand.

    We’ve received some outstanding feedback from the interns and the respective institutions, both during the internships and after the students returned home. Here’s a taste of what they said:  

    Armeet Narang, a student from Symbiosis Institute, Pune won a four-week internship at Avondale College

    "My experience in New Zealand as an intern is something I will cherish in the future. The people, culture, food, and the work ethic is very much different than in India, something that left me speechless. It was robust and fresh, something I believe every student needs in their college life. Perhaps, what left me astonished was the education system over there, so much more developed. Avondale College and the staff at the International Department were so warm and welcoming I settled right in. It was too good to be true for me. My homestay parents were simply perfect. A month after my return, I still miss that place - the weather, the food and the people. Such an opportunity is sure to open many doors for me, and I cannot be grateful enough.” - Armeet Narang

    “Avondale College welcomed the opportunity to host an intern from India and we were most pleased with the successful candidate when he arrived. Armeet immediately became one of the team at the Avondale College International Department, and set up his work station in the reception office - a signal to us he was here to integrate with the students, learn how a busy office worked, and to offer a new perspective.

    Initial discussions on how Armeet could add value included doing a SWOT analysis, reviewing current strategies of NZ Schools active in the Indian market, and developing a marketing strategy and plan for Avondale College to implement. Having a particular interest in use of media and digital channels, Armeet launched into a review of the current Avondale College website and Facebook usage and developed a best practice model to head towards.

    Armeet took every advantage of getting out and about in Auckland and the North Island. His trip culminated in attending the All Blacks game against Australia. His first rugby match he described it almost as good as an IPL match. From our perspective the internship was a huge success with learnings from both Armeet and institution. Many thanks to ENZ for the opportunity. We are solid advocates for such projects.” - Chris Klaassen, Director of International, Avondale College  

    Nguyen Hoai Thuong, Vietnam won a four-week internship at Palmerston North Girls High School

    “What I love most about New Zealand is that people are very friendly. I didn’t feel like I was in a foreign country, but at home, as a family member. The environment in New Zealand also captured my attention, since people have good awareness of environment protection, and it did have an impact on me after coming back to Vietnam. I also learnt a lot from my colleagues, not only marketing knowledge, but also their passion. They inspired me and made me realise that once you pour all your heart into doing something, anything can be meaningful and memorable. I really hope that one day I can go back to NZ, to learn more and explore more, and most of all, to see again the people giving me the best time of my youth.” - Nguyen Hoai Thuong  

    Pham Phuong Lam, Vietnam won a four-week internship at Academic Colleges Group

    “The one-month internship at ACG was an unforgettable experience. Auckland is a small, multi-cultural city that has made me feel welcome since my very first day. I love the people here, they are friendly, open and very kind. Working in ACG is my first working abroad experience. My colleagues always support and give me good advice to know more about international marketing. ACG has many education institutions that has helped me gain an overall view of New Zealand education, which is famous for critical thinking development and taking good care of international students.” - Pham Phuong Lam

    Kong Kah Weng (Eric), Malaysia won a four-week internship at Choose New Zealand Education Alliance

    Life here is completely different compared to Malaysia. What I have noticed so far, New Zealand is much more structured, less polluted, westernised, the standard of living is higher, buildings are flat, less traffic congestion, convenient public transportation and the city is filled with outrageously beautiful natural scenes.

    My first day working with Novo Education was remarkable, work culture here is very different. Working hours can be flexible; capability, trust and responsibility are amongst the key qualities of being a good staff. I have been catching up and learning many different tasks as an intern. In fact the work environment moulds you towards a positive working culture.

    I have got to know some friends here doing their undergraduate program at a polytechnic institution. In Malaysian’s mind, polytechnics are lousy. This perception does not apply to New Zealand surprisingly. Instead, they offer various types of programmes, well recognised locally and internationally up to postgraduate level. On top of it, they cost less than university.

    Lamb and beef taste like heaven! Many other local productions like diary, chocolate, chips and wine are a must try.  My honest opinion, I think I feel in love with this country and things around.” - Eric Kong

    “Novo Education has been delighted to host the ENZ prize winning student from Malaysia, Eric Kong, as an intern for 4 weeks. Eric visited the campuses of Choose New Zealand members in Auckland, New Plymouth, Whitianga, Greymouth and Christchurch, and is even more enthusiastic about New Zealand education than before he arrived, and was very active in posting positive comments on social media. In turn he has provided us with some insights and research into potential niche markets in Malaysia, and we feel quite excited about future opportunities there.

    “I am learning new, innovative ways of garment designing at AUT, which will help me incorporate new design elements when I go back to Kolkata. I am enjoying the student life and culture in Auckland, people on campus have been very friendly and the students from the fashion department organised a surprise picnic for me at the studio which means a lot considering I am in a new country.   • Enhancements to Study In New Zealand website

    As the audience has been steadily building, we’ve also been working to enhance the student experience, by adding more relevant content and improving the navigability of the site.

    One of the exciting recent developments has been content translation, with students from China, Viet Nam and Thailand now able to access translated versions of most of the site in their native language. The global home page and ‘Get Started’ sections will be updated and translated soon.

    The translated content is accessed by selecting the drop down menu under the ‘International’ tab at the top right of the website, as per the screen grab below.  

    We’re sharing the good news via our hugely popular agent and social media channels, so how about doing the same and giving your Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese students the opportunity to get the lowdown on studying in New Zealand in their own language?

    Another enhancement to studyinnewzealand.com is our recently-established blog.

    Having a modern audience-driven blog is a highly-effective way of connecting with our audiences in an authentic and trustworthy way, and will be one of the cornerstones of our content marketing strategy.

    The blog gives prospective international students the chance to explore what it’s like to study and live in New Zealand, through the eyes of current and former students.

    To make it as easy as possible for students to identify and access the content that’s of most interest to them, the experiences are arranged in the following sections: ‘Student Life’, ‘Travel and Adventure’, ‘Working while Studying’, and ‘How-tos and tips’ .

    We’re aiming for 90 percent of the blog content to be student-generated, with additional content coming from key influencers, such as guest lecturers, our NZ Inc partners where appropriate and ourselves. We’ve seeded the blog with a range of articles to kick off with, and will expand the content as more student experiences are captured.

    Our Marketing and Channels team is currently working on a content marketing strategy, which will include a blog content calendar. If you have access to great student-generated content you think might interest our target audiences please feel free to send it through to: blog@studyinnewzealand.com.
