  • INZ support invaluable

    The active participation of INZ staff in offshore international education marketing events is particularly appreciated, enabling the latest immigration and visa information to be provided to prospective students, their parents, education agents and members of the general public. 

    We were very well supported recently by Cat Beach, Immigration Manager based in Shanghai, at a series of international education marketing events in Japan and South Korea. Cat travelled with ENZ staff and New Zealand institutions to September events in Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul and Busan.

    She presented immigration updates to Japanese and Korean education agents, immigration seminars to attendees at the Seoul Korea Study Abroad Fair, and fielded enquiries from students, parents, and New Zealand institutions participating in the fairs and marketing events. 

     “Visas are at the front end when it comes to enabling a student to study in New Zealand. People often think that visa processes are difficult, so it’s really great to outline to them how easy it is to apply,” says Cat.

    “I also enjoy connecting with the New Zealand providers, as it makes the work INZ does very tangible. And of course whenever I participate in ENZ’s marketing events, it always reminds me of how beautiful New Zealand is and what we have to offer.  It makes me completely homesick!”

    ENZ Regional Director Lisa Futschek says: “Working seamlessly with INZ at our recent Japan and Korea marketing events was mutually reinforcing. Our international education sector was able to benefit from Cat’s extensive knowledge on visa and immigration matters, and INZ was able to experience first-hand the preoccupations of Japanese and Koreans considering a move to New Zealand.  A surprising number of guests to the fairs enquired about emigration to New Zealand under the skilled migrant and skills shortages categories.”

    NZIEC 2015 brings together practitioners and leaders from across New Zealand’s fifth largest export industry to explore strategies for growth. The Conference provides an opportunity to discuss, strategise and connect with expert speakers and delegates.

    The government’s Leadership Statement for International Education outlines ambitious onshore and offshore goals for the international education industry to achieve by 2025. With less than a decade to go until 2025, NZIEC 2015 focuses on how you can Accelerate Your Growth.

    To achieve success as an industry, we need to understand key changes in international markets, pursue innovation, invest in capability and communicate a strong brand. Through a range of presentations, workshops, discussions and case studies, NZIEC 2015 will provide a platform to learn what organisations around the world are doing to execute these strategies, and what we can do to improve ours.

  • International education growth – 376k investment

    Successful International Education Growth Fund (IEGF) recipients include Tai Poutini Polytechnic, who will develop of a range of study tour programmes for tourism professionals in China, and the University of Otago, who are developing ecology and sustainability papers for students studying the tropical ecosystems of East Malaysia.

    Two projects are focused on delivering masters qualifications offshore, while others relate to new products and programmes, marketing initiatives and exploring new channels to market.

    Educational publishers BIOZONE International and Kiwa Digital received co-funding to boost exports of digital learning resources. BIOZONE International are developing a digital platform for their high school biology resources and Kiwa Digital will be establishing a new distribution channel in North American market for their experiential digital books.

    The successful recipients are primarily focused on China and the US markets and includes universities, polytechnics, schools, private training providers, and the education technology sector.

    Education providers and businesses can apply for matched funding up to $50,000 from the International Education Growth Fund, which is administered by Education New Zealand.  In this latest round, 29 applications were received.

  • New General Manager for ENZ

    Paul will shape and develop ENZ’s international marketing strategies and New Zealand education’s global brand, and oversee our channels to international markets, helping to realise ENZ’s business plan and strategy.

    An experienced General Manager, Paul joins ENZ from advertising agency FCB Wellington, where he has led the Wellington office for the past three years. He has more than 15 years’ experience in marketing strategy, digital marketing, international marketing and team management.

    Some of Paul’s recent award-winning campaigns at FCB include Inland Revenue’s Overseas Based Borrowers student loans campaign and the Electricity Authority’s What’s My Number campaign. He worked with the Ministry of Education to launch the inaugural Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards, and with the Open Polytechnic on their ‘Learning for an Open World’ brand repositioning campaign. Prior to these New Zealand-based roles, Paul worked for the Economist in London and then Asia, setting up the marketing department in Singapore and growing revenue from their publishing products. 

    ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson says Paul will work closely with ENZ’s international team and the industry in New Zealand to continue growing awareness of, and preference for, a New Zealand education in our target markets.

    “With the latest student visa dashboard showing first-time student visas are up 11% to date, Paul joins us at a time of continuing strong growth in international education.

    “His long-standing marketing experience will build on this momentum, taking our Think New education brand from strength to strength.”

  • New Zealand education hits the airwaves in Brazil

    A radio competition was the latest initiative supported by ENZ to do just that in Brazil.

    The competition saw Latino International Studies partner with Radio Rock 89FM, leveraging the latter’s 30th anniversary celebrations to give the promotion a “30” theme: Comemore os 30 Anos da Rádio Rock na Nova Zelândia (celebrate Radio Rock’s 30th anniversary in New Zealand).

    To win: contestants needed to convince the judges – in a maximum of 30 words – why they were the most worthy recipients of the 30-day trip to New Zealand.

    The prize: was 30 days of English language learning course at Language Schools New Zealand in Queenstown including accommodation, insurance, air tickets and NZD1,000 in spending money.

    The lucky winner was Carolina Sant’ Ana, a 24-year old dentist from São Paulo. Her winning sentence was exactly 30 words in Portuguese and translates as: “I would use 30 words to convince LAE International Studies that 30 days in New Zealand would yield 30 years of memories and stories, as the 30 years of the Rock Radio.”

    An overjoyed Carolina received her prize at the New Zealand Consulate on commenting, “I can’t wait to visit New Zealand, to meet its lovely people and see its natural beauties. Definitely, it is a dream coming true”. She is planning to travel to New Zealand at the end of October.

    The results: The campaign ran from 21 May to 17 June and during this time:

    • New Zealand education was promoted to more than 2 million listeners
    • Two interviews were aired with the director of Latino International Studies, Sao Paulo to explain the competition and promote study in New Zealand
    • Almost 1,000 people from several Brazilian states entered the competition.

    Campaigns such as this offer invaluable opportunities to reach and engage with a huge audience of prospective students.

  • New Zealand on the road in Viet Nam

    The students were all treated to special presentations during the tour, with most walking away with an ENZ bag containing materials promoting New Zealand as an education destination.

    The purpose of the Roadshow’s education aspect of the was to raise awareness of New Zealand and drive registrations for the upcoming New Zealand education fairs on 3 – 4 October.

    This was very much an NZ Inc. initiative with ENZ, the New Zealand Embassy and Tourism New Zealand all working together to make the roadshow a reality. 

    A Māori cultural performing group from the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute stole the show. 

    “Māori culture is a fascinating and unique part of New Zealand culture; it’s something that sets us apart from others,” said New Zealand Ambassador HE Haike Manning. “The visit by this performance group was a great opportunity to showcase Māori culture to Vietnamese students to raise their awareness and interest in our country,”

    “We took the opportunity to showcase a number of other things we think make New Zealand special – our excellent education system, our beautiful landscapes, our cities, our food – all the things that make New Zealand such a wonderful tourism and study destination! We also showcased our positive and growing relationship with Viet Nam, so that Vietnamese students could gain an appreciation of the cooperation that has being going on between New Zealand and Viet Nam over the past 40 years.”

    The Roadshow is the latest in a year-long series of events organised by the New Zealand Embassy as part of the ‘New Zealand – Open to the New’ season, celebrating 40 years of friendship and diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Viet Nam. 

  • Instagramification

    For those who haven’t joined the Insta-revolution, Instagram is a photo sharing app and social network. Instagram is all about sharing aspirational images, so it’s the perfect space to grow brand awareness through creative and clever imagery, and storytelling.

    Since being acquired by Facebook in 2012, Instagram has gone from strength to strength and is now the world’s fastest growing social media platform. It’s extremely popular in the youth market, has more monthly users than Twitter and has a highly engaged and positive audience. There’s lots of information out there about Instagram and how it can support your marketing activity – a good place to start is Social Media Examiner.

    ENZ launched @studyinnewzealand on Instagram in February, choosing to hand the reins over to 15 scholarship students to document their New Zealand education experience.

    With a little incentivising ($200 towards a study adventure for the best contributor) and some creative angles, our students have showcased all the great things New Zealand offers as a study destination – from meeting people (and puppies) to having outdoor lessons on a sunny spring day; and from walking the Tongariro Crossing to ticking the quintessential bungee off the New Zealand “must-do” list.  

    Adopting this authentic voice has seen significant organic growth in @studyinnewzealand followers. The latest tally was 6,163 followers, with more than 1,000 prospective students signing up to follow us in the last two weeks. 

    We are also able to use the student’s Instagram content on our Study In New Zealand Facebook and Twitter pages, to support content and to create conversation.

  • A taste of New Zealand

    Kicking off on 20 May, proceedings got underway with an invitation-only event, hosted by New Zealand’s Ambassador to the Philippines, David Strachan.

    ENZ engaged a number of successful New Zealand alumni for media interviews and delivered a keynote presentation to a highly engaged crowd at the Glorietta Mall, Makati City venue.

    The ENZ booth was particularly busy over the three days. A number of prospective students came prepared with specific questions, with many focusing on postgraduate study options.

    The Experience NZ event also coincided with the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic ties between New Zealand and the Philippines.

    This event was the latest in a series of in-market ENZ activities in the Philippines. It followed a successful agent seminar in Manila earlier this year.

    A second agent seminar is being held in Cebu on 14 July and is now open for registration.

  • Notice: Brief shut down of INZ’s online client accounts in late May

    This means that education agents and providers will not be able to access their online client accounts for four days, from 8am NZT on Saturday, 28 May.

    New online applications will not be possible during this period, except for working holiday visas and skilled migrant category expressions of interest. Hard copy paper applications will still be accepted.

    IDme

    IDme will significantly improve INZ’s ability to confirm a person’s identity, making it a vital new protection against identity fraud by visa applicants.

    The system will enable biometric information (face photographs and fingerprints) from visa applicants to be uploaded online and automatically matched against personal information already held by INZ.

    IDme will be released in two tranches – the first release, from 31 May, will enable automated matching of all biographic details (personal data), fingerprints and a small volume of facial photographs. The second release, in the last quarter of 2016, will allow automated matching of all photographs.

    IDme is the latest in a series of business changes known collectively as Immigration ONLINE. Better customer service is a key aim of these changes, which include:

    • online applications for student, work and visitor visas

    • third party “apply on behalf” for INZ partners such as immigration advisors, and

    •  eVisas (passport-free and label-less visas).

    The next new service will enable families and tour groups to apply online using a single form. Once this happens, 80 percent of visa types by volume will be available online.

    Sitting behind these new services are business changes that standardise best practice and apply consistent, measurable quality standards across INZ. Traditional visa processing tasks will reduce as customers increasingly go online to apply for visas and check their visa status.

    New acceptable photo rules

    Photos can still be submitted online along with application forms, but they must now meet strict approval guidelines to avoid rejection by the system. INZ recommends that applicant photos be taken by a professional photographer or a business set up to take passport-quality photos.

  • International education gets $444,000 boost in co-funding

    The IEGF is designed to help New Zealand’s education providers achieve growth by boosting bold, innovative ideas to maximise international education opportunities.

    “The 2016 round of the IEGF brought applications from around the country, building on a sustained period of growth in international students choosing New Zealand as their study destination,” said ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson.

    “We are particularly keen to see further growth across New Zealand so it is encouraging that more than two thirds of the innovative projects awarded funding are from education providers in the regions.”

    Successful projects range from a fully integrated literacy programme in the United States, and the development of school-to-university pathway programme with middle schools in Changzhou, China, to the establishment of institutional relationships with selected Norwegian institutions.  

    Massey University is collaborating with the University of California at Davis to develop a world-class training programme in oiled wildlife response.

    AFS Intercultural Programmes New Zealand is working with intermediate schools in Wellington to deliver a short programme for Chinese students which has a strong intercultural component.

    “It is vital for New Zealand to continue to build on our international connections and ensure our young people are equipped with the cultural capability to study, live and work in the increasingly interconnected world we live in,” said Mr McPherson.

    “Market diversification is key to the sustainable growth of international education. We welcome education providers exploring new avenues and looking to expand into new markets. Over half of the successful recipients are targeting more than one market while others are setting out to widen their reach to include US, Germany, Norway and Japan,” he said.

    Matched funding worth up to $50,000 is open to all quality education providers, peak bodies, and businesses that offer education services or products internationally. The application process is competitive with preference given to bold approaches to growing the international education industry. In this latest round, 49 applications were received.
