Dan Carter meets Game On English students in Japan
Former All Black star, Dan Carter, visited Japan earlier this month to take part in a charity event for Support Our Kids (SOK). SOK works with children deeply affected by the Tohoku earthquake of 2011, nurturing them to become future reconstruction leaders.
So far 296 children have taken part in the programme which is supported by 11 countries around the world including New Zealand. Students get the opportunity to take part in two-week international exchanges focused on developing leadership skills and learning more about different cultures. They are placed with homestay families for the duration of their exchange.
Ian Kennedy, former New Zealand Ambassador to Japan, serves as the Honorary Chairman of SOK. The New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo has been a key supporter along with over 200 major Japanese corporations and organisations.
SOK and its sponsor companies hosted a series of events for Dan Carter including rugby clinics in three cities: Fukuoka, Kamaishi and Hachimantai. Fukuoka clinic included school children who had travelled from Kumamoto, a city that was hit by an earthquake in April.
"Dan’s support of the recovery and rebuilding efforts in the cities he visited as well as his dedication to supporting the Japanese youth has been amazing," said Misa Pitt ENZ Senior Market Development Manager Japan.
This year, Education New Zealand (ENZ) is sponsoring 10 SOK students who will arrive in New Zealand in August to take part in a one-day Game On English (GOE) taster programme at Canterbury Rugby Football Union, one of GOE’s rugby partners. The announcement was made during the charity auction dinner, where Dan met with the students and wished them all the best for their two weeks’ stay and study in Auckland and Christchurch.
GOE is an edu-sport programme combining New Zealand’s expertise in sports coaching with our world-class English language teaching. There is demand for this product given the Japan government’s goal to improve English language skills and increase sporting capacity in the lead up to hosting the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Summer Olympics.
“ENZ really welcomes partnering with SOK," said Ms Pitt. "Rugby is a disciplined sport which promotes strong team work and leadership qualities. We hope the students will learn and gain lots from this experience.
"By working closely with the host cities of the Rugby World Cup in 2019, we hope to be able to identify new opportunities to introduce New Zealand’s expertise in English language teaching, rugby coaching, hospitality, tourism and other special areas,” said Ms Pitt.

Korean college adds Auckland to curriculum
From 2019, 120 Korean tertiary students from the college will come to Auckland each year, attending either the Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS), Academics College Group (ACG) or Cornell. They will spend 12 months gaining practical experience in the region as part of their three-year training course.
Koguryeo College teaches a range of courses in aviation, food science, natural energy, engineering, tourism and hospitality.
Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development (ATEED) International Education Manager Henry Matthews says the new partnership arose after ATEED hosted a group of visiting principals from Korea earlier this year as part of a professional development programme.
“The principals were so impressed by the warm welcome, the high standard of education institutes and great Kiwi lifestyle, they suggested to the college that Auckland would be the ideal study destination,” he said.
“For Korean students, gaining international work and study experience can put them ahead of other candidates when they’re looking for employment after their studies.”
As part of the agreement, Koguryeo College will also offer two scholarships for New Zealand and international students based here to go to Korea, learn the language and take part in the college’s various training programmes.
Korea is the fourth largest market for the international education sector in New Zealand. Some 5,000 Korean students base themselves in Auckland, contributing $167 million a year to the region. This new agreement will deliver an additional $3.5 million per year to the regional economy.

iD fashion event inspires emerging designers' global ambitions
The iD event is Australasia’s largest international emerging (that is, final-year student or recent graduate) fashion competition, and one of the world’s only events of its kind to showcase emerging designers’ work to the public.

This year, final-year University of Zagreb student, Damir Begović, won top honours against 42 other top emerging designers who had flown into Dunedin from all corners of the globe last week.
The 43 finalists from 19 countries were selected from a record 200 entries. Other winners came from Australia, England, Poland, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Japan and India.
A high-powered Dunedin team led by Otago Polytechnic Professor of Fashion, Margo Barton, has hosted the iD International Emerging Designer show for the past 14 years as part of the longer established iD Dunedin Fashion Show.
Dr Barton said the event was a wonderful platform for emerging designers to network and collaborate with each other; it was also a great way to showcase emerging talent to the world.

“One of the lines we use is [that] iD brings the world’s fashion to Dunedin and Dunedin’s fashion to the world,” she said.
“Networking and collaborating is a big part of what we love about the way the finalists work together. There is a genuine sense of collegiality backstage with finalists helping each other out with styling, and organising meet-ups in the future.”
Dr Barton says the event is an integral part of her team’s teaching practice in many areas and is a compulsory part of the third-year programme.
“OP students are given the opportunity to be directly involved in the event. They are backstage dressing, they work as event assistants, PR assistants, designer assistants for our guest designers and they get to meet the finalists, discuss their work with them, touch the garments, be exposed to new emerging technologies that they may have not seen before – as well as [acquire] new ways of looking at fashion from a different cultural perspective.”
Dr Barton says she can trace the influence of the event on many designers’ career trajectories.
“Finalists and winners who have gone on to launch their own labels successfully include local labels Maiike (Abby van Schreven), Twenty Seven Names (Anjali Stewart), and Ruby and Liam (Emily Miller-Sharma).
“Others have gone on to work for international fashion houses such as Tara Viggo at River Island and Shola Steele at Benetton-Sisley.”
OP attracts international students on the strength of iD’s reputation. In 2013, an Icelandic student, Rakel Blom, who studied at OP won the iD event.
Dr Barton says that wherever she goes in the world, such as when she’s attending fashion education conferences, the iD event is “always a topic for discussion” and she is always on the look-out for potential international collaboration opportunities.

New Zealand-Viet Nam education ties deepen
This is the first New Zealand Government scholarship programme offered exclusively to Vietnamese secondary school students.
“A total of 36 New Zealand schools from nine regions are taking part in the scholarship initiative,” said ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson.
“We expect the programme will build partnerships and profile for New Zealand education across Viet Nam.
“The way we’ve tailored the scholarships to involve multiple regions across New Zealand also reflects a government commitment to ensuring the benefits of international education are shared widely.”
Among the 36 scholarships are 11 He Tohu Awhero (Ambition) scholarships supporting 30% of the tuition fees for the first year of study, and 25 He Tohu Hiranga (Excellence) scholarships supporting 50% of the tuition fees for the first year of study. One outstanding student recipient of the He Tohu Hiranga scholarship will be offered 100% of tuition fees for the first year of study.
Later this month, 35 of the New Zealand schools taking part in the initiative will visit schools in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to promote the scholarship and explore further collaborations.
Entries for the scholarships opened 1 March and the Vietnamese students will begin their study in Term 3, starting 22 July 2019.
Alongside the scholarship initiative, ENZ has also signed a Collaboration Arrangement with Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the aim of which is to deepen the education relationship between New Zealand and Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in Viet Nam with 13 million people in the metropolitan area.
“As part of this MoU, we will be exploring a range of partnership opportunities which includes the opportunity for New Zealand teachers and students to have an international education experience in Viet Nam,” said Grant.
“New Zealanders have a lot to gain from exposure to other cultures – language learning, for example. These experiences also expose our students and teachers to new possibilities.”
The Collaborative Arrangement and scholarship programme are part of a broader work programme being driven by ENZ.
Vietnamese school students studying in New Zealand contribute an estimated NZD $21m to our economy (2017 figures released in 2018).

Investment in growing academic mobility with South America
ENZ invites proposals for new research
ENZ and Brazil’s São Paulo Research Foundation (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo – FAPESP) are jointly funding new research projects to encourage academic cooperation and mobility between our countries.
Each is contributing $100,000 to enable eight or more established academic researchers across all fields, to conduct research in the other’s country. The first year of the funding agreement will act as a pilot.
FAPESP is a public foundation with a mission to support research projects in higher education and research institutions, in all fields of knowledge.
As part of the agreement with FAPESP, successful applicants from New Zealand will develop their projects in cooperation with researchers in Brazil. The researchers will then travel to Brazil to undertake the research with their partners. Brazilian researchers will be funded to come across to New Zealand in turn.
ENZ General Manager International, Lisa Futschek, says the funding collaboration will create opportunities for New Zealand researchers that did not exist before.
“South America is a key market for Education New Zealand – particularly in relation to outbound academic mobility. This new funding collaboration showcases ENZ's commitment to creating new pathways for New Zealand institutions with South America."
This announcement builds on years of relationship-building, and an agreement with Universities New Zealand (UNZ) in November 2016 to enhance cooperation, enable academic mobility and encourage the exchange of knowledge between participating higher education institutions.
ENZ Senior Market Development Manager – Brazil, Ana Azevedo, says: “The professors and researchers that will be involved in these research projects will have the opportunity to play a vital part in driving this relationship forward. They will be ambassadors for their university and New Zealand.”

Universities explore deepening 'south-to-south' connection with delegation
This October, senior academics and researchers from all eight New Zealand universities took part in a 10-day visit to Colombia and Brazil. The delegates explored options to collaborate in new areas such as pharmaceutical sciences and build on previous historical collaboration in areas such as agri-business.
In Colombia, the delegation were part of the official New Zealand presence at Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE-CAEI).
“At CAIE-CAEI, members of the delegation spoke on a panel to highlight areas of ‘south to south’ academic collaboration between Latin American and New Zealand universities,” says ENZ Regional Director – Americas and Europe, Amy Rutherford.
In Brazil, the delegation met with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (“Fiocruz”), the most prominent health-focused science and technology institute in Latin America.
They also visited the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and São Paulo State University (UNESP). At UNESP, the programme included meetings with Brazilian academics from universities across the country, including the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), the Federal University of Parana (UFPR), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and the University of São Paulo (USP).
In both Colombia and Brazil, the delegations participated in ‘Innovation and Education in New Zealand’ seminars for students, where they met with undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in studying in New Zealand. These seminars were co-hosted by members of the Universities New Zealand (UNZ) Latin America Elite Agent programme.
“I was pleased to see the high calibre of the New Zealand, Colombian and Brazilian academics and researchers who came together during the 10-day programme," Rutherford says. "The future of New Zealand-Colombia and New Zealand-Brazil academic and research collaboration looks bright!”

From the CE: Keeping the focus on NZ
Kia ora koutou,
It’s July and in New Zealand the middle of winter. Halfway through the year it’s a good time to reflect on how far we have come in a rapid six months. My first reflection is that it is great to have international students back in our communities, lecture theatres and classrooms. Since the borders reopened, we’ve seen good volumes of student visa applications, and those applications are reflected in steady growth in enrolments. While some parts of sector are doing better than others, the big picture is that learners are considering and choosing New Zealand as the place to come for a quality international education.
Having travelled to India, the US and Canada, and most recently China, alongside sector representatives, we should not underestimate how important this awareness and preference is. International education is hugely competitive. Competitors like Singapore and Ireland are not sitting still and we, collectively, need to keep New Zealand in front of the high-value students we want to attract.
In my opinion, the Prime Minister’s visit to China did just that. Education was a significant part of the itinerary and its importance as part of the bilateral relationship was mentioned in almost every engagement with the Government of China. The Prime Minister delivered an address at Peking University, and he had the opportunity to meet with alumni in a more informal environment. We also saw excellent coverage of the visit in key China media. China is an important partner market for New Zealand, and this was a very successful visit. A word of thanks to everyone involved in its organisation, the sector members of the delegation who travelled and everyone who participated. I know it was a mammoth task.
Another reflection I have is how pleasing it is to see young New Zealanders getting out into the world again as Prime Minister’s scholars. Reciprocity, as I am reminded when I am in market, is an important part of international education. Around 171 New Zealanders from 14 groups will travel to Asia and Latin America over the next year as part of the most recent Group round and the second round of individual scholarships will open next week.
As we look to what lies ahead, the theme of next month’s NEW ZEALAND INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE KI TUA, Te Ara Ki Tua The pathway forward, will provide an immediate opportunity to focus on our future. Thanks in advance to the sector leaders who are speaking or running workshops in what looks to be a compelling programme at our 30th conference. KI TUA is our annual opportunity to get together as one and to listen, learn, discuss and importantly, network. Globally, we are a small participant and to build on the good start of the past six months we must continue to move forward together. I encourage you to attend and I look forward to meeting and talking with many of you in a few weeks.

The global citizens helping connect New Zealand with the world
The future looks like arts and crafts. In a room at the TSB Arena in Wellington in August, the Festival for the Future expo floor is packed with things to paint and fold and stick and make. At a stall for the Sustainable Development Goals I pick up a wooden bead representing the 11th goal – sustainable cities and communities – and paint it carefully orange, ready to be strung into a bright pattern with everyone else’s. As a shameless eavesdropper, this is my natural habit. I listen to two people discuss 3D printing, while another group sip ethical soda on colourful beanbags and chat about responsible investment.
At the Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) stall people line up for coffee while filling out forms about their experience of “global citizenship”. ENZ is the crown entity responsible for international education in Aotearoa. In 2019, pre-Covid-19, there were over 100,000 international students in New Zealand, studying mostly at tertiary institutions, but also at primary and secondary schools. Since 2013, more than 2,400 New Zealanders have been awarded Prime Minister’s Scholarships to study in Asia or Latin America.
"Global citizenship is an essential part of New Zealand’s international education strategy, and these inbound and outbound students represent an opportunity to create global connections, research links and broad partnerships for New Zealand."
ENZ partnered with the Festival for the Future to discuss what international education and global citizenship looks like in the unique confines of 2021. For Carla Rey Vasquez, ENZ’s global citizenship manager, the strategy’s value in an era of limited travel is the gift of a dual perspective to complex problems. It is also an opportunity to help New Zealanders understand the nuanced and mutual benefits of international education and the long-term relationships it creates with people around the world.
“Our world is characterized by complex issues. Global citizenship offers an opportunity to find ways to navigate and respond to those issues through shared understanding,” she says. “It’s about realising the value and power of your identity and knowledge, but also acknowledging the potential of others’ experience and perspectives on the world.”
This is a worldview that Rey Vasquez says is built on a relationship of local belonging and responsibility to our people as well as people across the world. International education is an essential way New Zealand builds that bond with the rest of the world, bringing diverse people, organisations and countries together.
Vasquez, a former international student herself, knows how transformational international education can be for both the student and New Zealand.
“It brings the world to our home, if we can harness the cultural value that international students bring to New Zealand we will all grow as global learners,” she says.
ENZ sees global citizenship as a way to bring shared understanding and learning between countries and cultures. Marc Doesburg, senior innovation advisor at ENZ, believes it offers new perspectives on the world, and a chance to question one’s own understanding.
“We give young people an opportunity to critique [their cultures] by going overseas, to see that things are done differently here.”
International students are a significant source of income for education institutions and the New Zealand economy, contributing more than $5b in 2019. But for both ENZ and international students the benefits students bring New Zealand are far broader than a GDP injection.
“I don’t want us just to be seen as bringing money – we bring culture, we bring international values…we want to know local people,” says Claire Lu, a Taiwanese student studying politics and international relations at Victoria University of Wellington.
That works both ways – studying abroad was an “invaluable” experience for New Zealander Anna de Boer, who studied Mandarin in Shanghai as part of a Prime Minister’s Scholarship and has been back to China several times since. De Boer now works with international students at Victoria University of Wellington. She wants to reframe the narrative that international students “come here, take something, then go back to their home country.”
There’s a huge benefit in how international students can take a piece of New Zealand home with them, and leave an important part of their own story behind in Aotearoa too, says De Boer. This builds long term relationships that have value far beyond the years they spend studying.

EdTech World Tour in New Zealand
The Franco-German researchers have been assessing global edtech trends and ecosystems which support edtech adoption and innovation, and will present their findings to the EdTechXEurope conference in June.
While the US dominates the edtech sector Svenia and Audrey were curious to find out and report on what is happening in other parts of the world. Their Edtech World Tour started in France in October 2015 and included the United States, Chile, Australia, Korea, India and South Africa.
Education New Zealand Business Development Manager, Adele Bryant, hosted Svenia and Audrey’s visit to New Zealand from 7-14 December 2015 between the Chilean and Australian leg of the tour. During their time here, they visited education institutions, edtech companies and government agencies in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin, recording what they saw and heard on their social media platforms.
From an inspiring Point England School in Auckland, to a Wellington edtech community meetup, and on to Dunedin’s ADInstruments and its high quality life sciences educational products, Audrey and Svenia were welcomed and impressed by New Zealand’s approach to using and developing edtech.
Audrey and Svenia made the following observations from their time in New Zealand: “New Zealand has been of great inspiration to us as we feel the country has understood the way Edtech has to be implemented. No need to roll out devices and new edtech tools if neither the infrastructure nor the teacher training is there.
“The combination of the government’s efforts – together with Network for Learning – to bring high speed internet connection to all New Zealand schools and the work of MindLab in training New Zealand teachers in new technology has a huge potential to make New Zealand the next model for successful edtech use in schools.”
At each call they asked the same question “What does edtech mean to you?” The resulting videos have been uploaded to their website, providing insights into the different perspectives of teachers and developers. THAILAND
The Bangkok Post reports on the pace of progress to reform the education system in Thailand, the impact of this on Thai people and the Thai economy, and the flow on effects of intense competition for international schools in Bangkok. The article states Thailand may now be ready to increasingly look to foreign partners to make progress; the Education Ministry is reported to be working with Cambridge University to reform English language teaching and assessment and talking to education officials in Finland.
GLOBALResearch in to the regional differences in motivations, goals and behaviours of students seeking to study internationally culminated in FPP Edu Media producing a report that provides insights in to which messages and education offerings resonate in which markets. Download the report here.
JAPANThis month the Japan Business Federation, Keidanren, has brought forward the national start date for its companies’ rigorous graduate hiring processes, with mixed views to date on the impact for Japanese students studying abroad. From this year the association has advised members to begin interviewing students from June for job offers in October. Encouragingly, Keidanren’s guidelines have suggested companies make allowances for students abroad when hiring. The PIE News provides more detail.
SAUDI ARABIAThe recently appointed Minister Mohammed Al Isa has signaled that the Ministry [link in Arabic] will review a long-standing ban on foreign universities being established in Saudi, and commented that private education will ‘drive the future of the education sector’.
MALAYSIAThe Malaysian government has reported that it is on track to meet its goal of attracting 200,000 international students annually by 2020. Earlier this month it announced that all university students will be required to pass English language, currently taught as a second language, in order to graduate from university. The government expects a focus on English languages skills at all levels of its education system will make Malaysia a more attractive international education destination. Read more in The PIE News.

Budget update 2013
Education New Zealand Chief Executive Grant McPherson says the majority of the additional funding will be invested in growing awareness and preference for New Zealand as an international education destination in key markets, promoting New Zealand’s education services and products abroad, and supporting industry-led opportunities for growth.
Broadly, Education New Zealand will invest the funding in:

Broadening and intensifying our marketing activities in tier one and two target markets

Offering increased support to New Zealand international education providers and businesses to achieve greater growth.

Deepening our engagement with overseas education institutions and governments

Increasing the number of New Zealanders studying overseas by establishing new scholarships and encouraging the take up of existing scholarships.
“In addition to our own efforts, we will also continue to work with other government agencies to capitalise on all-of-government initiatives to market New Zealand internationally – ensuring a New Zealand education is promoted alongside tourism and other trade initiatives.”
Education New Zealand will continue to update industry throughout the year about where and how these additional resources are being invested, beginning with the release of our Statement of Intent in May. Following this, we will host a series of industry forums around the country to present our new Business Plan, which sets out Education New Zealand’s priorities for the next three years. These will be scheduled for late June/July and registration information will be sent soon.
