  • INZ’s new eMedical system

    About 20 percent of visa applicants require a physical health assessment as part of their application. Replacing INZ’s existing paper-based medical certificate, eMedical will be used by INZ’s panel physicians to record results of an applicants’ immigration medical examination. This information is provided to Immigration New Zealand through a secure online channel and in most cases, will not need manual assessment by immigration officers.

    In the first stage, eMedical is available to six offshore countries - Cambodia, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Viet Nam.

    There will be a second rollout stage at the end of January 2015 to all offshore eMedical-enabled countries. The final rollout stage will be onshore in New Zealand from the end of March 2015, coinciding with the establishment of INZ’s new onshore panel physician network.

    Paper-based certificates will continue to be used in countries where eMedical is not available.

  • Study Auckland local agent forum

    Connections were made via a series of 15-minute meetings plus networking over lunch at the Hilton Auckland.

    “It was a great day and well organised,” said Lesley King, Director of International Students at Glen Eden Intermediate School. 

    “Meeting local agents is always worthwhile and hopefully we will gain some worthwhile partnerships.”

    After lunch, the agents received an update from Immigration New Zealand’s Education Sector Relationship Manager, Katy Aldcroft.

    The update covered Immigration Online and the Pathway Student Visa option.

    “Local agent forums have been part of Study Auckland’s work for many years, and highlight the important role onshore agents play in driving international education growth in the Auckland region,” said Study Auckland Manager, Nick Arnott.

    “The agents also really appreciated the Immigration New Zealand update and the lively Q&A session that followed.”

  • New Safety in the City videos for international students

    Race Relations Commissioner, Dame Susan Devoy, welcomed the launch of the new videos at a special event on 20 March at Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED).

    The latest Safety in the City videos, which have been developed in collaboration with New Zealand Police, present 10 risk scenarios ranging from theft, personal safety, and sexual harassment to drugs and fraud. They highlight ways in which international students can protect themselves in each of these situations with the help of various support services.  

    The videosare accessible to international students and education providers via Study Auckland’s online toolkit, and a compilation can be seen on YouTube. The videos can be played together, or by subject area of interest, and are available with English and simplified Chinese subtitles.

    Dame Susan Devoy welcomes this work by Study Auckland developed as part of New Zealand’s international student wellbeing strategy.

    “The creation of these new videos will make an excellent contribution to the safety of international students in the city,” she said.

    Study Auckland’s Manager International Education, Henry Matthews, said helping international students have the best possible experience of Auckland is a key focus for Study Auckland.

    Henry and the Study Auckland team are mindful of Auckland’s responsibility as hosts to more than 80,000 international students each year.

    “International students are valuable ambassadors for Auckland, whether it’s contributing to the workforce, enhancing the cultural fabric of the city, or encouraging their friends and families to come for a visit or invest in the region,” Matthews said. 

  • International student FAQs

    The newly-launched FAQs cover study choices, applications, accommodation and finance, as well as questions on living, working and travelling in New Zealand. The content is timely, verified and sorted by categories.

    Lucia Alarcon, ENZ’s International Digital Project Manager, said reviewing the FAQs involved listening closely to the international student audience and finding out what they most wanted to know.

    “The updated questions were based on ENZ’s common student inquiries, and on the most searched-for questions in search engines and on the online Q&A site Quora,” she said.

    “We’ve also added links from the answers to other parts of the website, encouraging students to further explore the wealth of useful content we have about studying in New Zealand.”

    The FAQ content has been updated, expanded and fully optimised for internet search to ensure it ranks highly in search engine results. The How to Apply section of the website also links to the FAQs to give the page more visibility to interested students.

    Lucia expects the expanded FAQs will be a valuable tool not only to support student inquiries but to drive the number of student referrals to institutions.

    “It’s all part of our ongoing review of SiNZ to make it more relevant, helpful and outcome-driven,” she said.

  • Celebrating 60-year friendship with Malaysia

    The celebration, which involved ENZ, Tourism New Zealand and New Zealand Trade & Enterprise as well as the High Commission, was held over five days at the Pavilion Shopping Mall in Kuala Lumpur.

    The aim of the event was to bring New Zealand’s rich and varied culture, art, tourism, education, and food and beverage to Malaysia in a creative and engaging way.

    ENZ had a prominent spot at the event, attracting a number of visitors. ENZ delivered four presentations and held three Skype sessions with Malaysian undergraduate students currently studying at University of Canterbury and Victoria University of Wellington. A PhD researcher from the University of Canterbury also spoke online to prospective Malaysian students and parents in attendance.

    Margaret Low, ENZ Education Advisor based in Kuala Lumpur, said it was fantastic to be part of DANZ to celebrate bilateral relations with Malaysia as well as promote New Zealand’s education offering to local students.

    “The event provided us with an amazing platform to share the New Zealand education story to a huge audience,” said Margaret.

    “Our current Malaysian students also provided outstanding testimonials about their experiences in New Zealand and spoke glowingly about their unique study experience.”

    Visitors at the event enjoyed a virtual reality experience featuring beautiful New Zealand landscapes and the New Zealand education system as well as samples of top New Zealand food and beverage products.

  • ENZ updates agents on future plans at ANZA

    ANZA is held in New Zealand every three years with this year’s event held at SkyCity Auckland. 

    Almost 450 participants from 49 countries attended. Agents from China, India, Colombia, Brazil and Viet Nam were most heavily represented. A quarter of agents were taking part in their first ANZA workshop and many had not visited New Zealand before.

    “We talked about ENZ’s plans to increasingly engage with quality agents. We want to ensure that quality agents have available to them the most effective tools, resources and training they need to promote New Zealand as a high quality and welcoming international study destination.ENZ Manager Agents, Dan Smidt, said ENZ used the opportunity to give an update on ENZ’s plans for agent engagement.

    “We discussed the upcoming re-launch of the Education New Zealand Recognised Agents (ENZRA) programme and the online agent training programme we are creating.

    “We also talked about how the new MyStudy platform on the Study in New Zealand website can help agents to advise prospective students on study options in New Zealand.”

    ENZ Business Development Manager, Jo Keane, said ENZ staff offered a range of other information, support and advice.

    “One of our team ran a seminar on how agents and providers can grow their business profile on Facebook using the collateral and material on ENZ’s current social channels.

    “We also ran a seminar focusing on the innovative ways that a number of New Zealand’s regions support agents and grow advocacy through the creation of outstanding student experiences.

    Education New Zealand’s plenary presentation in the early evening was particularly well received.

    “We talked about our current FutureProof campaign and showed our new FutureProof video, which people loved.

    “We also gave an overview of the Student Wellbeing Strategy and the work being done to move from a good-to-great student experience.”

    Following the conference, 11 familiarisation tours took place around New Zealand including to Taranaki and Christchurch.

    ANZA will next be held in New Zealand in April 2021 at the new Christchurch Convention Centre.

  • My StudyNZ connects students to institutions

    My StudyNZ, an online members’ centre on the Study in New Zealand website, enables students to match with the courses and institutions that best suit them. It is designed for students who are not yet sure what to study and need recommendations.

    Lucia Alarcon, ENZ’s International Digital Programme Manager, said students on the database have been invited to join My StudyNZ, where they’ll be able to create a profile, review personalised study recommendations, shortlist matches and track their progress towards applying for courses and visas.

    “We had very positive feedback when we tested the tool with students – 76% of the students we surveyed found it either easy to use or very easy to use!” said Lucia.

    “My StudyNZ uses a sophisticated algorithm to match students’ preferences with the information in institutions’ profiles on our admin platform. Institutions then receive a ‘priority enquiry’ email for each student they’re matched with.”

  • NZQA approves micro-credentials

    NZQA has announced the implementation of micro-credentials as part of  New Zealand’s regulated education and training system.

    Content: Micro-credentials, also known as badges, nano-credentials and nano-degrees, are stand-alone products that enable learners to access specific knowledge and skills in a cost-effective and time-efficient way. At 5 to 40 credits, they are smaller than qualifications.

    NZQA is currently reviewing the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. One aim of the review is to enable the framework to allow for the recognition of other types of learning, like micro-credentials. This will ensure the new framework reflects the evolving nature of work, globalisation and the impact of digital technologies.

    The move reflects the disruption we’re seeing in education delivery and potential for further online delivery.

    While many jobs will always require full qualifications, there is a growing number of cases where micro-credentials might be more appropriate, as people require new up-to-date skills to keep pace with the changing workforce.

    A micro-credentials system allows learners to ‘future-proof’ themselves by accessing a wide range of education and training options.

    In August 2017, NZQA undertook a micro-credential pilot project with a range of organisations, which revealed a high degree of interest in the concept from a range of individuals and organisations in New Zealand.

  • Prime Minister meets Kiwi students in Singapore

    Last week the Prime Minister announced the 249 young New Zealanders who have been awarded prestigious Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia (PMSA) and Latin America (PMSLA) as part of the August 2018/19 round.

    She congratulated the new round of awardees in Singapore, where she met a group of 11 current PMSA recipients and reflected on the value of young Kiwis having international education experiences.  

    The Singapore-based awardees at the event included Louis Martin (25) who is carrying out a four-month internship with Asia Internship Program (AIP), Nicolas Steyn (20) who is on a one semester exchange at the National University of Singapore, and Lucy Kenner (22) who is undertaking a 12-week legal internship at Providence Law Asia. 

    “Ongoing academic relationships and new business opportunities are two things we are seeing result from the scholarship programme,” Jacinda Arden said in the announcement release.

    “Our awardees are welcomed and supported by diplomatic communities in New Zealand and offshore, which we also value.”

    John Laxon, Regional Director – South and South East Asia, Middle East, said that Friday’s event during which the Prime Minister chatted and mingled with the group of Kiwi students showed how international education can be life changing.

    “Our scholars gave great insights into how they have created lifelong connections through their PMSA experiences, which will enrich their lives and strengthen their careers,” said John.

    “The Prime Minister enjoyed the discussions, which brought back memories of her own exchange student experience at Arizona State University.”

    Applications for the next round of PMSA and PMSLA opens mid-January and must be submitted online by 30 March 2019. More information on the application process can be found here. Institutions are encouraged to contact ENZ to discuss potential group applications.

  • Future Focus Programme seeds innovation

    The Future Focus Programme is a new initiative which will provide $200,000 per sector in funding to help peak bodies seed innovation projects.

    The school, university, private training establishment (PTE), polytechnic (ITP), English language, and education products and services sectors are all being supported through this programme.

    The funding is to be used by peak bodies to develop an innovation plan for their sector, and to initiate innovation projects. Innovation projects are to focus in the areas of product development, online delivery, new business models and the development of innovation capability.

    Through this support, ENZ wishes to encourage sectors to adopt new ways of working to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 or similarly unprecedented events.

    “The Future Focus Programme is a tangible way in which ENZ can help support sectors to shape their future in the ‘new normal’ post COVID-19,” ENZ General Manager – Partnerships & Marketing, Paul Irwin, says.

    “The programme is additional to our normal activities and is designed with a clear focus on innovation – part of Goal 2 of the New Zealand International Education Strategy. With all the uncertainty we are currently facing, this programme is an opportunity to take stock of what COVID-19 means for how international education can operate in the future and develop new products, services, behaviours and models to help us be more resilient to change.” 

    “We’re pleased to be working alongside peak bodies to help shape their future focus plans and we look forward to seeing the launch of a number of innovative projects.”

    ENZ is working alongside peak bodies as they develop their innovation plans and identify prospective innovation projects. These plans and projects will be agreed over the coming weeks.

    Delivery timeframes will vary according to the peak body and the scale and nature of the projects they initiate, but projects are expected to be implemented over the coming 12 to 18 months.
