  • From the CE: Putting NZ back on the map in 2022-23

    With relatively low numbers of international students currently in New Zealand, the primary focus for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) over the 2022-23 year will be on rebuilding the sector. The rebuild will have an emphasis on quality and long-term sustainability. We will be working closely with our key sector partners here and around the world to put New Zealand back on the map.  

    This focus is reflected in the draft refresh of the New Zealand International Education Strategy 2022-30, in our recently published Statement of Intent 2022-26 and Statement of Performance Expectations 2022-23, and in our internal business planning for the year ahead.  

    The high impact global marketing campaign, I AM NEW, launched at NAFSA in late May, provides a strong starting point for the rebuild. As well as raising New Zealand’s profile by attracting significant international media coverage, the campaign has so far reached over 115 million users. This is a unified, overarching promotion on behalf of New Zealand’s international education providers – an essential approach for us to be heard in this extremely competitive sector. We have focussed the promotion on ten partner countries: Brazil, China, Colombia, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, United States, and Viet Nam. The current phase of the campaign includes highlighting individual student stories.  

    Travel to partner countries to support the work of locally based ENZ staff and our NZ Inc agency partners is also an important part of promoting New Zealand’s education. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s visit to Singapore and Japan in April, and Education Minister Chris Hipkins’ travel to the United States, Brazil and Chile in May-June have delivered the clear message that New Zealand is open for business, raised awareness of our quality education offering, and progressed our relationships in these countries. You can read more detailed reports about the trip to North and South America in this month’s E-News, and we’re currently planning our forward schedule of travel to other key partner countries.  

    After discussions with education providers, we have finalised the programme of in-market events where New Zealand will be represented through until the end of 2022, and this is now available on our website here.  

    The reopening of New Zealand’s borders has also enabled the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America to restart this year, so New Zealanders have the opportunity to learn from international experiences and develop their global citizenship competencies and networks. Decisions were recently announced on the first round of group applications, while applications for individual scholarships are open until 31 August 2022.  

    This month we also formalised a new partnership between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and ENZ that will see ENZ take over operational management of the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme from November 2022. This is an excellent example of ‘NZ Inc.’ cooperation that plays to each agency’s strengths. You can read more about the partnership in this issue of E-News.

  • International education events July – December 2022

    The calendar includes a mixture of ENZ-run events and commercial and global events, designed to facilitate engagement with students, parents, agents and other stakeholders and show that New Zealand is open for business. 

    It’s exciting to be welcoming the sector back to events in partner countries, and to reconnect in person with students, parents and international education partners.  

    “We are really excited to be bringing back a number of events that our industry partners will be familiar with from before the pandemic,” says Ben Burrowes, ENZ’s Regional Director Asia.  

    “We are looking forward to welcoming industry partners back in country and reconnecting with them face-to-face. It's hugely important for us to be back out here, reassuring everyone that New Zealand is ready to start welcoming international students back to our shores.”  

    In April and May this year, ENZ held several engagement sessions with international education providers and ran a survey to inform decisions. We received positive feedback from the sector that they wanted to see events developed that would enable them to promote their offerings directly to students and other stakeholders in key countries, under the New Zealand education brand.  

    While we have seen international border restrictions soften for many countries, some still have various levels of border restrictions in place – ENZ will continue to monitor this as it could affect future events.

  • Alumni events in China build ties with NZ

    More than 100 past, current and future students, as well as representatives from China’s Ministry of Education and six other key government agencies, attended an event in Beijing on 8 July 2022, organised by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao.  

    Two former international students played a major role in the success of this event.  

    Chinese author Ma Boyong gave a keynote speech. Ma Boyong was a student at Waikato University, and today he is a well-known novelist, columnist and blogger, whose work has been adapted into successful TV drama series. His achievements have been recognised with the People's Literature Prize, one of China's most prestigious honours.  He told guests how his New Zealand study inspired his creativity, his desire to be a writer, and led to love – he met his wife in New Zealand! 

    Reggie Li, who trained at the New Zealand School of Travel and Tourism and later worked extensively at top restaurants and hotels in New Zealand as a chef, is the New Zealand Embassy’s executive chef.  Reggie gave salmon cooking demonstrations to the assembled guests. The demo was interactive and put a spotlight on searing/cooking salmon with a blowtorch.  The salmon was then enjoyed by the guests.  New Zealand-imported Aoraki salmon is often served at embassy events as it has a strong reputation in China, promotes sustainability and is, of course, loved by Chinese. 

    In Guangzhou on 10 July 2022, a similar number of guests gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and China, and the festival of Matariki, the Māori New Year.   

    Organised by ENZ with support from other government agencies (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, and Tourism New Zealand), the 2022 NZ Guangzhou Community Mid-Year Event brought together close to 100 agents, past, present and future students and New Zealand expats. The event included a screening of the award-winning film Whale Rider. 

    “Events like this help us maintain relationships with our alumni students, connect new students with alumni, and strengthen people’s connections with New Zealand,” says Miranda Herbert, ENZ’s Director based in China. 

    “It is also very rewarding to showcase the benefits of a New Zealand education and hear about its impact on the lives and careers of former students.”

  • From the CE: Welcoming back our international students

    Many of these students have travelled to New Zealand for the first time, leaving their families and friends behind to explore a New Zealand education experience. It’s a big deal for them, and for us. Normal student visa processing only just resumed a few weeks ago, and so most of the students are here thanks to the cohort processes that you supported, or as short-term visitors from visa-waiver countries with strong links to New Zealand.  

    Thank you for making them so welcome, and for sharing their stories through the media. Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao has been pleased to support these welcomes by providing Tū Ngātahi pins to share with the students. The pins were created to welcome and demonstrate our support for international students – Tū Ngātahi is a te Reo Māori phrase calling us to ‘stand together’. The Pikorua twist design is inspired by the pikopiko fern, whose fronds curl around one another, which is a symbol of the connection of cultures and the importance of friendship. 

    You can read about the recent international student welcome at Waitangi in this edition of E-News, and I’m looking forward to meeting students in Christchurch later this week. 

    Our 29th international education sector conference, NZIEC KI TUA 2022, finished on Friday – what a great event! There were some exceptional speakers, fascinating discussions, not to mention a few funny moments behind the scenes. The virtual conference, with its themes of Reflect, Reconnect and Renew broke previous records by attracting 1,065 attendees. Thank you to all of you who took part and helped make this such a successful event. All the sessions were recorded, and they will remain available to you on the event portal until 16 September 2022.

    As I mentioned at the conference, ENZ has recently made some changes to our leadership team, to ensure we are well placed to work with you on the rebuild of international education. We now have two new roles in ENZ’s senior leadership team that are specifically focussed on meeting your needs as a sector: GM Sector Engagement, and GM Sector Services. The newly appointed GM Sector Engagement is Wendy Kerr, who will join us in October. Sahinde Pala, who will already be well known to many of you from her work at ENZ since 2016, has been appointed GM Sector Services. In addition, the role of Ed Tuari as our Manukura - Chief Advisor Māori is now also part of the senior leadership team. This change reflects the importance of our work to transform the understanding of international education and ensure the education system delivers with, and for, Māori in the international context.  Wendy and Sahinde are both profiled in this edition of E-News, and you can see the full senior leadership team on our website here.  

    Finally, I want to acknowledge the work done by our international teams every day around the world, on behalf of New Zealand’s international education sector. There are numerous stories in E-News each month that provide a glimpse of some of their activities. In this issue, you can read about new scholarships, digital exchanges, workshops for education agents, education cooperation agreements, and more.

  • Two new sector-facing leadership roles at ENZ

    GM Sector Engagement

    We look forward to welcoming Wendy Kerr to Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) on 3 October 2022. Ms Kerr will take up the newly-created role of General Manager, Sector Engagement. 

    Joining us from fintech Valocity where she was Global Chief Operations Officer, Ms Kerr has rich experience in both education and commercial businesses globally. 

    Prior to Valocity, she was Director of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Auckland.  She led the team there to transform the Centre and enabled the University to be recognised as Entrepreneurial University of the Year in the Asia-Pacific. 

    Ms Kerr is also Board Director for The Icehouse and sits on the Board of Epsom Girls Grammar. Previous roles include General Manager for Pearson PLC London, and Asia-Pacific Marketing Manager for Apple. She has been a TEDx speaker and has published a number one bestseller on Amazon - ‘Corporate Crossovers’. Ms Kerr has a Ngāti Mutunga and Moriori heritage and will be based in our Auckland office.  

    The Sector Engagement group delivers strategic initiatives in partnership with sector partners and stakeholders, undertakes business development, and designs and delivers new products and services.

    GM Sector Services

    Sahinde Pala was recently appointed to the newly-created role of General Manager, Sector Services.

    Ms Pala joined ENZ in 2016 after 18 years working for a multinational group of English language schools. With a career dedicated to international education, she brought extensive private sector experience in international marketing, stakeholder engagement and student experience delivery to the organisation.

    Ms Pala has held a number of roles at ENZ working with education providers, government stakeholders, regional groups, peak bodies, students’ associations and community groups. She was heavily involved in developing the International Student Wellbeing Strategy.

    With a passion for delivering an excellent customer experience, Ms Pala will be leading the newly formed Sector Services team to deliver a suite of products and services that support the sector to rebuild and thrive. This includes student experience, global citizenship, global events, and agent engagement, as well as scholarships to support domestic students to have an international education experience, and international students to study in New Zealand. 

    Sahinde is based in our Auckland office and spends her time outside of work standing on the sidelines of sports fields supporting her young boys.

  • APAC TVET Forum registrations go live

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) is excited to be hosting this virtual forum in partnership with Skills Consulting Group and Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology.

    This year’s forum theme Reshape – Rethink – Reset reflects the need to ensure the sustainability of workforces through innovation and skill building. The world of work is changing rapidly, so the upskilling and retraining of workers throughout the Asia Pacific region is more important than ever.

    APAC TVET provides an opportunity to share knowledge and insights on best practice across the region.  Participants will hear from sector leaders and practitioners throughout government, business, and education. There will be opportunities for learning, discussion, and networking.

    The wide-ranging programme features topics such as:  

    • Solving skills shortages in a global community 
    • Youth employment and lifelong learning
    • Skills for tomorrow and the credentials required 
    • Reimagining work: Digital transformation  
    • Inclusive systems that bridge the gender gap and promote diversity 
    • Embedding sustainability in vocational education

  • Innovation at Festival for the Future

    This annual event showcases leadership and innovation, and seeks to amplify rangatahi and minority voices, to demonstrate leadership around topics such as climate action, diversity and inclusion, and sustainable development.

    More than 30 speakers took part, attracting more than 1,000 participants across New Zealand, as well as online participants around the world.

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) promoted the Prime Minister's Scholarships for Asia and Latin America and ENZ's mahi in global citizenship more broadly.

    Former Prime Minister’s Scholar for Asia, Young New Zealander of the Year, and co-founder of Aotearoa’s first Māori owned electricity company, Ezra Hirawani, was one of the opening keynote speakers. Ezra spoke about the importance of global citizenship, what it means for him as a Māori New Zealander and how it can be used to address the issues of our lifetime.

    In addition to partnering with Inspiring Stories Trust as a sponsor of the Festival, ENZ supported the Global Impact Award. Courtney Davies, a young New Zealander leading environmental programmes for young people across New Zealand and Africa, with a focus on sustainable change and action, received this year’s award.

  • Building links in Malaysia

    The college also formalised its collaboration with the University of Canterbury (UC) at the event, which was attended by the Chief Minister of Penang, Mr Chow Kon Yeow, and New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, H.E Pam Dunn.  

    Mr Chow highlighted the importance of ensuring Malaysians have access to diverse education options that broaden their prospects as global citizens. 

    “The higher education sector plays an invaluable role in realising Malaysia’s targets of becoming a high-income nation,” he said.  

    Over the past two years, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao has focused on sustaining New Zealand’s global reputation through education and research partnerships, as well as leveraging digital tools to maximise learning experiences.  

    In Malaysia, this includes a programme launched by DISTED College in collaboration with UC, which allows eligible students to apply for a one-year advanced standing into UC’s Bachelor of Commerce degree. Students can also enter other UC programmes, including in engineering and science, via a range of pathway programmes offered by the college. 

    Mr Chow said cross-border collaborations like these, which allow students to begin their studies closer to home before seamlessly transitioning to a higher degree in New Zealand, significantly lower the cost and broaden the range of opportunities for Malaysian students. 

    Brian Imrie, Chief Executive Officer at DISTED College, is himself a New Zealander, and places high value on this opportunity from UC, for international students to explore the world and help solve future global challenges. Previous students have returned to Malaysia enthusiastic about their experience and the career opportunities it provided, he said. 

    Malaysia is one of New Zealand’s oldest and closest diplomatic partners in Southeast Asia, and this year marks 65 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

  • ENZ hosts its first famil since 2019

    Eleven public universities were represented in the Malaysian delegation of senior executives from the Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operations Sdn Bhd (METEOR). METEOR is a consortium of universities that aims to provide advanced solutions through technology. This was an exploratory visit, to enable delegates to discuss a range of opportunities and possible partnerships with New Zealand universities and Te Pūkenga.  

    The visit was exciting on many fronts as our institutions demonstrated their expertise and explored mutually beneficial relationships, regions showcased their attractions, and the famil delegates from Malaysia experienced many aspects of New Zealand. 

    The eight-day visit included Wellington, Canterbury and the Waikato. While the start of the week coincided with a cold southerly storm, this was mitigated by warm hospitality and the promise of sun later in the week.

    The delegation was fortunate to meet with Minister of Education Chris Hipkins during their visit. While in Wellington they also signed an Education Cooperation Agreement with ENZ that provides a framework for our relationship going forward. They also met up with Malaysian students at various institutions and heard about their personal experiences here. 

    The delegation saw trades in action at WELTEC’s trades campus where they observed building apprentices on a block course.

    Famils are important for ENZ as well as for New Zealand institutions, as they establish relationships and strengthen people-to-people links. They are also a key way to showcase some of the best education New Zealand has to offer across different regions.  

    ENZ looks forward to hosting more famils in the coming months, in partnership with institutions and regions throughout New Zealand.

  • NZ Centre agreement with Peking University renewed

    Established in 2007, the New Zealand Centre promotes strong academic engagement between New Zealand and China across diverse fields and builds mutual understanding between both countries. It is supported by our Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ). 

    A special event to mark the signing was jointly held at Peking University and at New Zealand's Parliament on 27 July 2022, hosted by Education Minister Chris Hipkins. Chinese Vice Minister of Education Tian Xuejun provided a speech, while New Zealand’s Ambassador to China, Clare Fearnley, took the opportunity to thank ENZ for funding migratory birds research, announcing this initiative during the ceremony.  Around 50 guests, including former New Zealand ambassadors to China and China experts from New Zealand’s universities, attended the Wellington event.
