Game On English changing the lives of Japanese rugby students
The ‘Game On English’ edu-sports programme for Japanese rugby students in New Zealand is gaining in popularity, says Kim Renner, Operations Manager of English New Zealand, the English language sector peak body.
“We’re very pleased with the programme’s early success,” says Kim.
Game On English provides Japanese rugby teams with a unique learning experience in New Zealand. Students receive daily English language classes and high-performance rugby training, and live with homestay families where they experience Kiwi life and culture and are immersed in an English-language speaking environment.“The programme isn’t just about playing sport,” says Kim. “It provides a life-changing experience for young people that builds self-confidence and leadership through teamwork.”
Kim says Japanese students are attracted to the programme because of the world champion All Blacks, and New Zealand’s commitment to developing skilled young Kiwi rugby players.
“New Zealand’s national high school and university competitions foster the growth of world-class rugby players as well as developing talented coaches. There is a fine tradition of students who have become great All Blacks.”
Game on English was developed in July 2014 by ENZ and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It was created in response to the Japanese Government’s goal of improving the English language skills, and increasing the sporting capacity, of Japan’s young people in the lead up to its hosting of the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympics.
The programme now includes five New Zealand Rugby Union academies and selected English language providers in Auckland, Hamilton, Mount Maunganui, Christchurch and Dunedin.
Kim says Japanese public interest in rugby is growing thanks to the Brave Blossoms’ victory over the South Africans at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Response to student visa fraud allegations
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) have become more aware of risk and fraud in some markets including India and measures are in place to identify and manage the fraud. The high visa decline rates are evidence of a significant effort by INZ to manage students who submit false and misleading information.
India is the second largest source of international students to New Zealand. India is and will continue to form a large part of the international education industry. The vast majority of students who study in New Zealand make a very valuable contribution to our campuses, our workplaces and our society.
Every day Indian students, alongside other international students, are helping New Zealand to build its research capability and global linkages, to fill skill shortages and enrich our culture. The actions of a small minority must not damage the reputation of a whole nation and undermine the significant contribution the vast majority of international students make to New Zealand society.
If there are cases of the rules being flouted, we urge people to report those cases so they can be investigated and addressed fully.
ENZ works closely with our fellow agencies including INZ, New Zealand Qualifications Authority and the Ministry of Education top ensure that New Zealand continues to have a high quality education system which delivers for New Zealand and international students.

Our work to support Māori Crown relationships
ENZ is committed to giving practical effect to the Crown's Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Te Tiriti) responsibilities in our work and giving effect to Te Tiriti obligations in the Education and Training Act 2020. We take a wide and deliberate view of Te Tiriti to build understanding of what it means and how it can contribute to international education in practice.
ENZ is implementing He Rautaki Māori, our Māori Strategy, by weaving the following Ngā Whainga (key objectives) into our activities:
- Facilitating strategic partnerships and connections with indigenous iwi/hapu and Māori providers to deliver international education with, and for, indigenous and Māori communities.
- Embedding the principles of ENZ's Te Tiriti o Waitangi framework into all facets of operation to present the education system as valuing a Māori world view.
- Supporting public sector objectives in Māori-Crown relationships
- Continuing to weave te reo me ōna tikanga into ENZ's purpose, which is to spread the word about the social, cultural, and economic benefits of international education within New Zealand.
