  • Making global citizenship education a national priority

    The webinar – a collaboration between Education New Zealand and AFS Intercultural Programs – canvassed the concrete steps that policymakers and educators can take to put global citizenship front and centre in curricula, teacher education and daily practice. 

    Daniel Obst, President and CEO of AFS Intercultural Programs, said the essence of global citizenship is being able to understand how we are connected, listen to other perspectives and take collective action.

    “Global citizenship is not about stamps in passports, it’s about understanding our interdependence and our shared responsibility for our local communities and the world,” said Mr Obst.

    It is mission-critical that governments invest in global citizenship education and expand access to global competence if we are to tackle the challenges of the 21st century, he said.

    Around 130 experts tuned in for the ‘Making global citizenship education a national priority’ webinar – timed to follow the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit hosted by New Zealand in mid-November.

    Carla Rey Vasquez, ENZ’s Global Citizens Manager, said the New Zealand International Education Strategy 2018 - 2030 is an example of best practice in signalling clear government support for global citizenship and giving government agencies a roadmap to work with.

    “Fostering global citizenship is the glue that connects; is pivotal for raising the educational outcomes for both international and domestic students and helping us grow global connections,” said Ms Rey Vasquez.

    Other nations could follow the New Zealand example and broaden the focus of the international student experience from academic education alone to cultural and social values, she said.

    Romina Kasman, Head of Education Sector at UNESCO’s Multicountry Office, said global citizenship must be part of a holistic ecosystem.

    “Global citizenship education must not be left to chance if we want to ensure equitable and inclusive access to it worldwide,” she said.

    Lit Wei Chin, APEC youth representative and Auckland Unlimited’s Climate Change and Sustainability Executive, said the voices of young people were important to global citizenship.

    Young people cannot be just a tick-box – they must be heard on the issues of the global economy, quality education, climate action, equity and empowerment of marginalized communities, he said.

  • International students are work-ready for the summer

    The seminar was hosted by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) and the Central Economic Development Agency (CEDA), and targeted international students who have completed, or are studying towards, a Level 7 qualification and above. 

    Most of the attendees were Massey University PhD and Masters students from a range of fields, as well as UCOL students of graphic design, cookery, operations and project management, ICT, furniture design and science. 

    Judy Bennett-Smith, CEDA International Education Development Manager said the free seminar was the first in a series to be held locally, with the next one aiming to connect potential employers with skilled international tertiary students. 

    The seminar covered study-to-work visa pathway information and advice, tips on how to navigate the job market, how to present oneself to employers, information about New Zealand employment rights and even invited a former international student to share their experience.

    Philip Hastings, Relationship Manager at MBIE said the seminar was a great opportunity for students to talk directly with INZ representative about their work options.

    “With the increase in international tertiary students in New Zealand, it is important they have an understanding of the pathways to meeting post-study work visa and residency requirements,” Mr Hastings said.

    “Together with CEDA we aim to facilitate a series of study-to-work seminars in the Central North Island that are aligned with regional work shortages.”

  • Reminder about ENZ’s Market webinar for Schools: Monday 24 July

    As shared in last month’s E-News, schools are invited to hear from Education New Zealand’s Manapou ki te Ao in-market specialists in Japan, China, Korea, Viet Nam and Thailand on Monday 24 July from 2pm to 4pm (NZT). The team will provide updates on the latest market information, trends and advice. There will also be time for questions. This is good timing for those travelling to events from August to October.

  • What’s new in IntelliLab

    ENZ’s Intelligence team has added new content to IntelliLab:

    • Visa dashboard for December 2017 (full year summary)
    • IVY – an interactive visa tool
    • Market factsheets (for China, India, Korea, Japan, Columbia, Vietnam)
    • International student Barometer survey results for university and ITP sectors
    • Updated country forecasts from The Economist Intelligence Unit

    IVY contains a wealth of visa information and will replace the 50-page monthly visa trends report (the last visa trends report was November 2017). The monthly visa summary dashboard will continue in its current form.

    IVY is updated monthly, so users will need to download a new copy each month to access the most up-to-date information. (Please note: IVY has a large file size, so some patience may be required while we explore ways to improve it.)

    Our interactive enrolments tool TED (The Enrolments Data) is being updated. You may notice revised student numbers when comparing student nationalities by New Zealand region – this is due to the large number of unfunded PTE and ELS students now being assigned to regions based on their provider. The top-line numbers, such as total number of students and students by country, remain unchanged.

  • Study Abroad NZ schools programme launched in US

    ENZ Business Development Manager Mary Camp says this is a pilot project to test the waters in the US market.

    “We’re thrilled to be partnering with AFS for this pilot – they are a trusted organisation with a long history of matching US students with life-changing education experiences.

    “New Zealand schools have much to offer US students looking for a high-quality study abroad experience to give them a competitive advantage in the college application process.”

    The programme includes nine New Zealand schools, each offering themed programmes for one semester in the fields of environmental studies, Māori culture, the arts, outdoor education and leadership.

    Mary is hoping to see some more US students coming through in 2019 as a result of the pilot.

    “Opening up new markets for the school sector will help us achieve sustainable growth, which of course is a focus of the International Education Strategy

    “If the pilot is successful, we’ll look to roll it out to more New Zealand schools.”

    The schools involved are Rangitoto College, Western Springs College, Western Heights High School, Aotea College, Papanui High School, Hillmorton High School, Whanganui High School, Whakatane High School and Te Puke High School.

  • Impact of demonetisation on Indian student recruitment

    The government has implemented a deadline of 30 December for people to exchange the old currency notes at banks.

    In the student recruitment market, key impacts have already been felt:

    • There are maximum daily limits for banks to exchange money, which is creating delays in student loan processing for international students, and in Immigration New Zealand’s (INZ) ability to verify financial documents and process visas.
    • Study abroad has become more expensive but conversely, New Zealand has become relatively more cost effective as the Indian rupee has dropped more against the Euro and USD than the NZD and AUD.

    Longer term, the supply of ‘grey money’ to finance significant purchases will be reduced, including for education. This may impact study abroad numbers. However, student loan costs may fall as a reduction in overall money supply (some grey money will not be exchanged) will reduce loan interest rates and inflation. It’s too soon to tell the significance of these impacts, but it’s more likely that rural and agricultural cash-based regions such as the Punjab will be affected.

    ENZ’s Regional Director South, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, John Laxon, said the repercussions of this change are still playing out.

    “The changes are likely to result in some delays in Indian student applications over the next few months for all countries, while any significant longer-term impacts are still to be worked through,” said Mr Laxon.

    “We have provided an update to education agents to keep them informed of New Zealand’s student visa approach. We will monitor visa numbers with INZ and keep education providers updated,” added Laxon.
