Indonesian events see strong interest from agents, students, NZ alumni, and scholarship applicants
In late January, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) and all eight New Zealand universities joined forces to promote New Zealand's education offerings in Surabaya and Jakarta, Indonesia. The collaboration between ENZ and the universities aimed to strengthen ties with Indonesian education agencies, school counsellors, and alumni, fostering future partnerships and enhancing the visibility of New Zealand as a preferred destination for international education.
ENZ and the New Zealand universities organised a series of promotional activities in Surabaya on 24 January that saw participation from 11 agencies and school counsellors representing six schools. The promotional activities continued in Jakarta the next day, where representatives from 22 education agencies and 18 schools further demonstrated enthusiasm and interest in a New Zealand education. ENZ’s Regional Director for Asia (excluding China), Ben Burrowes and Market Manager (Indonesia and Malaysia), Naluri Bella, also had engagements with key agencies, such as Fortrust Education and SUN Education, across the two days.
Ben Burrowes said that the two events served to reconnect the universities with Indonesian agents and schools and proved an excellent opportunity for the institutions to showcase the diverse range of academic programmes available in New Zealand.
“The two events provided a platform for open discussion, idea exchanges and the exploration of potential partnerships that were focused not just on recruitment but also on building sustainable collaborations that would benefit both New Zealand institutions and Indonesian students seeking quality education abroad,” said Ben.
“A great example of such potential partnerships is how one school has already followed up saying they’d like to invite the universities back for a ‘New Zealand day’ event,
“These discussions come at an opportune time as ENZ continues to firm up its Indonesia strategy for the next financial year,” added Ben.
Following the university events, on 27 January, ENZ co-hosted a New Zealand Alumni Day with New Zealand Inc agencies. The event included information sessions on New Zealand scholarships, ranging from the New Zealand Manaaki scholarships and the Indonesian government scholarships such as LPDP (Indonesia’s Institute of Education Fund Management) and Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (ISMA), attracting around 100 potential leads. This initiative aimed to guide and inspire prospective students in their pursuit of educational opportunities in New Zealand.
ENZ and NZ Inc also witnessed the launch of the New Zealand - Indonesia Alumni Association during the Alumni Day. The Association serves as a networking platform for connecting New Zealand alumni in Indonesia, fostering a supportive community and providing ongoing resources for professional and personal development. The event concluded with a networking dinner, providing a relaxed and informal setting for alumni to connect with each other and with representatives from New Zealand universities.

International education matters
These values are at the core of international education and they are more important now than ever.
Over the past five days, these values have been clearly demonstrated by our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern who describes New Zealand as a proud nation of more than 200 ethnicities and 160 languages.
“We were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone racism… (or) are an enclave for extremism. We were chosen for the very fact that we are none of these things; because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion, a home for those that share our values, a refuge for those who need it.”
These values are embedded in our education system.
The New Zealand International Education Strategy 2018-2030 also reflects these principles. A key goal is to grow global citizens – to ensure both domestic and international students have the skills and capabilities to live, learn and work globally.
While our country grieves, we have been heartened by the outpouring of love and support within New Zealand and from around the world. It has been encouraging to see student-led compassion at work – Campus Watch initiatives, social media engagement and practical help with transport and food.
Last year, the University of Canterbury’s Student Volunteer Army (SVA) welcomed student leaders from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the US, scene of a deadly school shooting, to discuss student-led mobilisation in the face of extreme challenge. When Friday’s attack happened, the US students were quick to reach out to their Christchurch peers. This is a testament to international education’s ability to foster meaningful and life-long connections.
ENZ will continue to promote New Zealand internationally as an inclusive and welcoming study destination – why? Because international education changes hearts and minds.

2016 ISB results: PTEs and ELPs
The ISB is a globally benchmarked survey for international students which measures their level of satisfaction across four major dimensions including their arrival experience, the support they receive from their education provider, the quality of education provided, and their living experience in country.
International Student Barometer – PTE sector
The 2016 PTE sector ISB survey had 2,909 participants, a significant increase over the 2,010 participants in 2014, and saw the overall satisfaction of participating international students from New Zealand PTEs increase by 1.8% from the 2014 survey to sit at 89.5%.
New Zealand PTEs significantly outperformed the global benchmark for private education providers globally, being 2.2% above the global overall student satisfaction benchmark of 87.3%.
Within the four major components of the survey, PTEs outperformed the global benchmark on each dimension:

International Student Barometer – English Language Sector
The 2016 English Language sector ISB survey had 3,597 participants, a significant increase over the 1,990 participants in 2014, and saw the overall satisfaction of participating international students from New Zealand English Language providers decrease by 2.2% from the 2014 survey to sit at 86.7%.
New Zealand English Language providers underperformed the global benchmark for English Language providers globally, being 1.0% below the global overall student satisfaction benchmark of 87.7%.
Within the four major components of the survey, English Language Schools underperformed the global benchmark on each dimension:

Each participating education provider in the ISB survey receives a customised report based on their own international student survey results provided to i-Graduate which details their performance in relation to other participants in New Zealand, and an overall global benchmark. Providers use these results to make informed decisions to enhance the international student experience and drive successful recruitment and marketing strategies.
ENZ, who funds the ISB survey, receives overall aggregate results for each education sector, but does not have access to individual provider results. ENZ works with sectors to ensure the experience of international students in New Zealand enhances our reputation as a high quality, safe, and welcoming education destination.
