Supporting PTEs to grow internationally
The recent 2024 ITENZ Conference in September provided the ideal platform for Sharon-May McCrostie, Acting General Manager of Sector Engagement for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) to highlight some of ENZ’s work to support Private Training Establishments (PTEs).
Strengthening New Zealand’s reputation as a preferred destination for international students studying with PTEs by taking a collaborative approach with the subsector has been key, said Sharon-May.
“This includes how ENZ works with PTEs to develop the subsector by organising roadshows, in-market education fairs, events and webinars. We also have a strong pipeline of activity ahead, working with PTEs through strategic marketing, partnerships, capability building, with a focus on delivering high-quality educational experiences,” added Sharon-May.

During her presentation, Sharon-May highlighted four key points:
- Expanding recruitment efforts in key markets such as India, China, Viet Nam, Latin America, and the Philippines, will be incredibly important in the diversification of the international student base. This will also be vital in achieving the New Zealand government’s goal to double export earnings from international education to $4.4 billion by 2027 and meeting the student enrolment target of 85,000 by 2024/25 (up from 69,000).
- ENZ conducts targeted marketing campaigns that aim to boost visibility and awareness of a New Zealand education. Providers can leverage ENZ marketing support in their international journey through tools like BrandLab for developing promotional materials and AgentLab for connecting with education agents.
- ENZ provides valuable market insights through IntelliLab, offering data on trends, student preferences, and enrolment statistics to help providers make informed decisions.
- Lastly, to improve the student experience, ENZ provides resources such as NauMai NZ and conducts an annual Student Experience Survey, giving providers insights into how they can better meet the needs of international students.
Sharon-May ended by confirming ENZ’s commitment to the subsector.
“We are committed to providing ongoing support for PTE providers through research, resource and capability building. We look forward to continuing our efforts in supporting the growth of this very important part of New Zealand’s international education eco-system,” said Sharon-May.

New brand identity of the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme launching next week
Education providers and suppliers who are part of the programme will be able to start using the new brand’s design assets from The ENZ BrandLab from 23 October.
The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship website will also prominently showcase the refreshed brand from next week.
The new Manaaki logo consists of three parts. The tohu is on the left, the Manaaki wordmark is placed in the middle, with the Aotearoa New Zealand fernmark on the right-hand side.
New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade - Manatū Aorere (MFAT) Scholarships Unit Manager, Alexandra Grace, said it was important for the new brand identity to reflect the transformational nature of Manaaki scholarships to build people’s skills and support them to contribute positively to their communities and countries.
“The new brand is an exciting step forward to unify the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme’s visual identity to appeal to prospective scholars who are most aligned with our Programme’s values,” Alexandra said.
He parirau is one of the key patterns of the new brand. It is inspired by the takarangi (spiral) and parirau (feathers).
The brand identity development and working group involved kaimahi Māori from MFAT, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao and Indigenous Design Innovation Aotearoa (IDIA) who gifted a specially crafted whakatauākī* for the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme.
The whakatauākī ‘He Parirau Toro Ao’ translates to ‘stretch your wings to the world’.
ENZ’s Senior Advisor, Rautaki Māori, Craig Rofe, said the whakatauākī is a profound taonga and gift to the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme.
“It beautifully anchors the programme in āhua Māori (Māori ways of being).”
“We are also pleased with how the whole process of creating the new brand has been steeped in āhua Māori. The way everyone involved in the project used whakawhanaungatanga – the specific act of getting to know one another before we started our work – and wānanga, coming together to meet, discuss and deliberate, every step of the way, made all the difference,” Craig said.

The new brand was developed following research and interviews with 29 scholars and alumni, and a survey covering 627 people.
The research surfaced three compelling principles for the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme – manaakitanga, empowering people, communities and countries, and fostering enduring connections.
ENZ’s Manaaki Scholarships Manager, Nancy Linton, said the concept of manaakitanga is integral to the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships Programme – not only by name, but also in the way that scholars are supported during their entire journey, from application and study to their return home.
“The manaaki we show our visitors by embracing them like part of our ‘whānau’ or family is visible in the way our educational providers extend that support to Manaaki scholars and alumni, who really value it as part of their study experience.
“I am pleased with the way we have incorporated this core element of the Programme, among others, into the new brand identity,” Nancy said.
A brand transition period is in place through 28 February 2025, to allow providers enough time to switch to new brand assets.

* Whakatauākī are proverbs where the person who said it first is known, as opposed to whakataukī, which are proverbs whose origin cannot be traced to a person.

Annual survey shows continuing strong support for international students in New Zealand
More than three quarters of 1,100 New Zealanders in the annual 2024 survey conducted by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) believe the country should host the same or more international students in New Zealand.
This was the key finding of research, completed in October, to measure New Zealanders’ views on the contribution and challenges of international students studying in New Zealand.
For the first time this year, the annual survey asked respondents if they wanted to see more or fewer international students in the country. Forty-one (41) percent of those surveyed said they would like to see more, with another 36 percent supporting the same number of students. Only 11 percent indicated they would like to see fewer international students arrive.
Positive perceptions of international students also continued to track strongly with 72 percent saying the students benefit New Zealand. This followed similar levels of support of 75 percent in 2023 and 73 percent in 2022.
Commenting on the findings, ENZ’s Chief Executive, Amanda Malu, said the results reinforced the growing support and understanding of the contribution of international students to local communities and the country.
“Since 2018 we have seen increasing support for the contribution international students make in key areas,” said Ms Malu.
“Today 82 percent of New Zealanders agree that international students contribute to our cultural diversity, with 79 percent feeling they help local students learn about other cultures and ways of life, as well as contributing to local businesses during their studies.”
“This level of support is enormously pleasing. It tells us we can continue to steadily grow the number of international students in New Zealand and that they will continue to receive a warm welcome in our communities.”

NZ set to host Brazilian ‘Ganhando o Mundo’ programme scholars in 2025
Brazil is now the 6th largest source of international high school students for New Zealand, moving up from 11th place in 2023 (1). Contributing to this rise in popularity has been the strengthening of educational ties between education partners in Brazil and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ).
The ‘Ganhando o Mundo’ programme from Paraná, recently announced new high school student scholarship winners for 2025. Five countries have been chosen to host the students, with New Zealand being announced as one of the five. Approximately 200 scholarship winners are expected to spend two terms in New Zealand schools next year.
‘Ganhando o Mundo’ is an international education programme created by the state of Paraná which allows thousands of students from public high schools to study abroad for six months with all expenses subsidised. The goal is to provide academic training in foreign institutions, as well as cultural and pedagogical experiences that can later be shared in state schools in Paraná.
The announcement was made in Curitiba during a series of engagements that took place in October between a New Zealand delegation and Paraná state institutions, international education agencies and government authorities.

This was followed by a launch event hosted by the Paraná state government on 25 November in which the New Zealand Ambassador to Brazil, Richard Prendergast, attended alongside ENZ’s market development manager for Brazil, Bruna de Natale, state government officials, and hundreds of excited scholarship winners.
Ambassador Prendergast said that it was incredibly gratifying to participate in the Ganhando o Mundo programme launch event.,New Zealand Ambassador to Brazil, Richard Prendergast, with Ganhando o Mundo scholarship recipients who will be heading to New Zealand in 2025.
“The two hundred students who will be going to New Zealand next year – and the 350 others who went in the two previous editions, in fact, all the Brazilians who studied in New Zealand, our alumni - are ‘informal ambassadors’ of New Zealand in Brazil,” said Ambassador Prendergast.
“They know and understand both countries and tend to work to expand our collaboration, to build bridges. People-to-people relationships are fundamental in our bilateral relationship, he added.”

ENZ’s Bruna de Natale said that this announcement is testament to the strong educational ties that are continually growing between New Zealand and not just the state of Paraná, but across the rest of Brazil too.
“A similar study abroad programme has also just been announced by the state government of São Paulo. ‘Prontos Pro Mundo’ (Ready for the World) will send approximately 100 Brazilian students to New Zealand high schools during term 1 next year,” said Bruna.
“We look forward to welcoming all of these Brazilian students to high schools and their local communities across the country in 2025 and building on this momentum to host more students in the future,” added Bruna.

ENZ re-connecting at ICEF ANZA Conference Perth 2023
More than 230 international student recruitment agents and over 150 providers from around 50 countries attended the first in-person ANZA conference since the Covid-19 pandemic. The conference was held from 12 to 14 April.
Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) is one of ANZA’s key supporters. It is an excellent opportunity for education providers and agents to connect, exchange and explore ideas that will grow the international education sector around the world.
ENZ’s Manager, Global Events and Agents, Janine Huxford, alongside Immigration New Zealand’s Manager of International Education, Celia Coombes, were invited to deliver a presentation on New Zealand’s road to recovery as a top study destination.
Janine said “Celia and I took this opportunity to begin our presentation by showcasing the unique cultural experience that international students have when they come to Aotearoa New Zealand. Our presentation began in a pitch-black room with the sound of the pūtātara, conch shell or sea trumpet ringing out.
“This was followed by a karakia acknowledging the Māori creation story that begins with a description of darkness and nothingness and continues to move between different states until light flows into the world that establishes a fundamental relationship between humans and the natural world. It was quite a spine-tingling experience, and no one will forget our introduction in a hurry,” she added.
Janine and Celia then went on to talk about the incredible mahi that our sector is doing across our various agencies and institutions to rebuild the international education market within Aotearoa New Zealand. “We shared with our audience that students considering international education are always going to choose the country first. For a niche market like Aotearoa New Zealand, it is important that our messaging is focused on what students will experience when they come to study with you”, said Janine.

Survey shows that New Zealand is among top destinations for Brazilians who study abroad
Belta’s annual survey, sponsored by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), was conducted between December 2022 and April 2023 with 763 students and 317 international education agents from all regions of Brazil surveyed to assess their perceptions of international education. The survey results were shared at a recent event in Sao Paolo with dozens of agents and media attending, in person and virtually, to hear about the survey’s latest findings.
ENZ’s Market Development Manager in Brazil, Bruna de Natale, delivered a short speech ahead of the results release. She said it was positive to see so much interest in the release of the survey results, especially when the results revealed that New Zealand continues to rank strongly as an international education destination amongst Brazilian students.
“In this most recent survey, New Zealand moved to seventh position on the list of top education destinations sought by Brazilians who studied abroad, compared to before the Covid-19 pandemic when it was in eighth place. The main reason driving country choice for the students surveyed is the quality of life – New Zealand ranks very well for the quality of life, education, and the protection of civil rights.
“The quality of teaching is another reason given by those surveyed when choosing New Zealand and 60% of participants rated the quality of our English schools and language programmes as good or excellent. It is fantastic to see that New Zealand continues to attract attention as a quality international education destination and it is certainly on the radar as a desired destination for future exchange students,” said Bruna.
Of the international education agents who were surveyed, 52.9% reported that the demand for students interested in New Zealand has remained stable since the borders reopened, while 20.6% recorded growth in interest. This group projects that the numbers of Brazilian students travelling to New Zealand will return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 and 2024, with the highest flows expected for the first (35.3%) and second quarters of 2024 (32.4%), with demand increasing gradually from the first quarter of 2023.
