  • 2023 PIEoneer Awards - Celebrating NZ international student finalist, Nehara Pandey

    Nehara was one of only seven students from across the globe shortlisted as finalists for the ‘International Alumni of the Year’ category at the 2023 PIEoneer Awards. She was the only student in her category from the Southern Hemisphere and up against fellow international students from the UK, United States, and Germany. 

    The PIEoneer Awards is hosted annually by PIE News, a prominent international education news platform, and honours individuals and organisations across the globe driving excellence and innovation in education and beyond. The ‘International Alumni of the Year’ award celebrates international students who have made a significant contribution to their institution and the wider community. This year, the ceremony took place in London on Friday 22 September. 

    Nehara is originally from Goa in India and proudly neurodiverse. She completed her foundation studies at UP International College’s Wellington Campus in 2021 where she proved her drive for academic success, scooping up the Overall Excellence Award at the Wellington International Student Excellence Awards that same year. 

    Growing up by the ocean in India sparked her interest in environmentalism and she is now furthering her education at Victoria University of Wellington with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in marine biology. As well as being a dedicated conservationist, climate correspondent, and aspiring marine biologist, she is also a strong advocate for the neurodiverse community. You can read about her many achievements in UP Education’s media release on her nomination here.  UP Education also produced a showcase video, featured below, that highlights Nehara’s remarkable achievements and how a New Zealand international education has helped her succeed. 

    Nehara participated in the awards ceremony online and said it was an exciting experience to be a part of and such an honour to represent both New Zealand and India at an international level. 

    "I was introduced to so many organisations and people breaking barriers in the field of International Education. Although I did not win, this was such a unique learning experience and I'm extremely grateful to UP Education for nominating me.  

    Studying at UP Education and now at Victoria University of Wellington has taught me so much and allowed me to grow both personally and professionally," said Nehara.  

    "I'm incredibly thankful to both institutions for allowing me to pursue my dreams of working in the field of conservation," she added. 

     Richard Kensington, Principal, Academic Relations for UP Education said that Nehara’s success story reflects the transformative educational experiences New Zealand can offer its international students.  

    “We were absolutely thrilled for Nehara that she was an ‘International Alumni of the Year’ finalist. This is yet another achievement that she can add to the already long list of achievements to her name,” said Richard. 

    ENZ’s Regional Director, America’s, Middle East and Europe, Amy Rutherford, was invited to participate in the 2023 Awards as one of 41 independent judges presiding over the 20 award categories. She joined two other New Zealanders on the panel including Gavin Millar from Nayland College in Nelson and Dr Pii-Tuulia Nikula from The Eastern Institute of Technology | Te Pūkenga in the Hawkes Bay.

    Amy said it was a huge honour to be invited to take part in the awards which celebrate the achievements of individuals and businesses who make such significant contributions to international education around the globe.  

    The calibre of the nominations received for the PIEoneer awards was especially high this year. It was a particularly proud moment to see Nehara representing New Zealand’s international education sector on this global stage and see her recognised for the outstanding contributions she makes to so many areas of her personal and academic life.

  • High satisfaction rates amongst valuable insights collected from NZIEC KI TUA 2023 post-event survey

    As standard practice for our events, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) sends out a post-event survey to help us in planning for future conferences and would like to extend a big thank you to all those who took the time to share their feedback with us.  

    Manager Global Events and Agents, Janine Huxford, said that the information we gather via these surveys is of huge value to her team as planning has already started for NZIEC KI TUA 2024.  

    The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive and 88% of attendees reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their experience at NZIEC KI TUA 2023. We also received a net promoter score of +27 which is well above the events industry’s benchmark of +10 which shows strong customer engagement and advocacy levels.  

    While these satisfaction rates are helpful and show that we are hitting the mark with most attendees, we really like to delve a bit deeper into the areas which haven’t quite met the delegates’ expectations. For example, satisfaction was slightly higher for those attending from the universities vs the school sector so we will be reviewing aspects of future schedules including the relevance of the sessions and making sure this is more evenly spread for all areas of the sector.  

    Also, there was feedback from some delegates that the app did not work as well as it could have. We have fed that information back to the developers who have confirmed that development work is scheduled to improve the mobile app. A future release is expected later this year which we expect will improve next year’s conference app.” added Janine.  

    In summary, the key findings from the survey were:  

    • Overall, 88% of attendees reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their experience at NZIEC KI TUA 2023. 3.5% reported not being satisfied with their experience. 

    • There was some variation in overall satisfaction with NZIEC KI TUA within the sector: Those affiliated with a university were statistically more likely to be very/satisfied with their experience (95%) than those affiliated with a school (86%) 

    • Despite evidence that those affiliated with a university were more likely than those with a school to report overall satisfaction with NZIEC KI TUA, the NPS for schools (+25) was higher than that for universities (14%).  

    • All keynote sessions were perceived to be of high quality by most respondents, with few responding negatively. A small proportion of attendees rated the sessions by Dr Hinemoa Elder (18%), Yemi Penn (13%), and Kaila Colbin (7%) as ‘fair’. 

    • Among networking opportunities at the conference delegates were most satisfied with opportunities to reconnect with sector colleagues (88% very/completely satisfied), followed by opportunities to meet new people (84%) and engage with partners (70%). 

    • Among experiences of the conference, delegates were most satisfied with the helpfulness of the organising staff (98% very/completely satisfied), followed by the organisation of the event (87%), quality of the sessions (74%), and relevance of the sessions (65%)  

    • The relevance of the sessions (30%), quality of the sessions (22%), and the event organisation (18%) contributed the most to people’s response to the Net Promoter Score question. This means that they are the most important factors in people’s experiences for their likelihood to recommend NZIEC KI TUA to others. 

    • Around half of the respondents felt more or much more confident that the New Zealand international education sector is ‘moving in the right direction’ (54%) and that it is resilient (53%). Only 7% felt less confident in either.

  • Government delegation from South Korea visits New Zealand to reconnect with several of our education providers

    New Zealand and South Korea have strong education links and one unique partnership is the education cooperation under the Korea-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (KNZFTA) which has historically included education programmes for Korean school and tertiary students. 

    The visiting delegation included representatives from the Korea Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), the Korea Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information Service in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (EPIS) and Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA), the implementing agency for the MOF-funded project. 

    The delegation was welcomed to the ENZ Wellington office with a mihi whakatau on their first day. ENZ, Ministry of Education (MoE) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) colleagues joined together for waiata and kai with our Korean guests.

    Following a welcome and mihi whakatau in Wellington, the group travelled on to Nelson where they visited Te Pūkenga Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) and Nayland College. The visit to Nayland College was an opportunity for the Korean representatives to gain a better understanding of the pastoral care for school students and the unique offerings such as outdoor education and horticulture programmes. 

    Kay Lee, ENZ Senior Market Development Manager – Korea, said it was important for the Korean delegation to experience firsthand the welcoming and safe environment of New Zealand schools to regain confidence in the Schools Visits Programme 

    “After the COVID-19 pandemic, the Korean Government was concerned about sending students, especially younger students, overseas to study particularly on scholarship programmes because parents wanted assurance their children will be well looked after. In the debrief with the Korean representatives, it was clear they gained confidence from speaking to the New Zealand institution representatives around the procedures and systems in place to support students.” 

    “We hope that this renewed confidence will mean that we start seeing Korean government scholarship school students studying in New Zealand again in the near future”. 

    High on the agenda during the delegation’s visit were the School Visits and Tertiary Training Programmes, both of which were affected significantly during the pandemic.  

    From 2016 –2019, the School Visits Programme provided 150 high school scholarships per year for South Korean students from rural areas to attend New Zealand schools for eight weeks. The Korean Government planned to continue the Schools Visits Programme with its own funding in 2020, however, the programme was cancelled due to travel restrictions during the pandemic.   

    An alternative programme was run by MAFRA and MOF from December 2022 which involved short-term English Language Training for school students in Korea with three New Zealand teachers travelling to Korea to teach English (Read about their experience here).The Korean organisers have decided to run the English language programme in Korea again with six New Zealand teachers traveling to Korea to teach English in January 2024. 

    Nayland College demonstrated manaakitanga by welcoming the group to rainy Nelson but provided an Asia Kiwi lunch complete with meat pies and sushi!

    Like the Schools Visits Programme, the pandemic interrupted tertiary programmes and the revised programme ran in January 2023 with short term group programmes. The site visits in November to Te Pūkenga NMIT and Lincoln University provided an opportunity to discuss the institutions’ proposals to host Korean tertiary students in January 2024.  

    Also discussed was the importance of reciprocity and it was noted that Korea is a popular destination for New Zealanders under the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia (PMSA) scheme. Since 2016, the scheme has awarded scholarships to 196 individuals or groups for study, intern or research programmes in Korea. Lincoln University, in particular, has been successful in facilitating group PMSA programmes focused on agriculture to Korea.

    At the conclusion of their visit, the Korean delegation expressed their gratitude to the institution hosts for making their time in New Zealand memorable and valuable through fruitful discussions. The delegation emphasised the importance of conducting these meetings in person and visiting the campuses to meet with institution staff and academics. The ENZ Manapou ki te Ao team is pleased to continue close cooperation with our Korean education partners to facilitate connections with New Zealand education providers for the education programmes.

  • Replacement for China’s discontinued JSJ List announced

    JSJ is the abbreviation in Chinese for ‘Website of Information on International Education Affairs Supervision and Management’ (Chinese Pinyin: Jiaoyu Shewai Jianguan Xinxiwang; Chinese Characters: 教育涉外监管信息网). Since 2003, this had been a key portal used by Chinese students and families to find information on overseas institutions. To be added to the JSJ list, providers had to apply to China’s MoE for approval but in late 2022, the JSJ List for all countries was removed from the JSJ Website. Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) has been informed that this list will not be returning 

    A new list of international institutions was released in late 2023 on the Smart Education of China website (Chinese Pinyin: Guojia Zhihui Jiaoyu Gonggong Fuwu Pingtai; Chinese characters: 国家智慧教育公共服务平台). This is an official government website supplying standardised information and services on education to the public.  

    New Zealand institutions will appear on the new list if a student had a qualification from that institution successfully verified by the Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE), within the past five years. The CSCSE is the agency under China MoE mandated to provide verification of foreign qualifications. It should be noted that the CSCSE’s scope of services extends only to qualifications at the equivalent of Level 5 and above on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework. This process is automatic, and institutions cannot apply to China MoE or CSCSE to be listed. A summary of the New Zealand Higher Education Institutions included on this CSCSE list (as of January 2024) can be found here.  

    Notably CSCSE has an existing list of overseas institutions which have issued qualifications that students have successfully verified through the agency. The information on the Smart Education of China website replicates this list. Any updates to the listed institutions will be made to both lists simultaneously.   • Reflections from English Teachers in South Korea

    In January 2024, six New Zealand teachers were selected to spend part of their summer season teaching English in South Korea as part of the New Zealand Korea FTA Partnership English Language Training Programme 

    This programme is supported by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) who assists with the teacher recruitment process. This was one of the key KNZFTA programmes recently discussed during the South Korea Government delegation visit to New Zealand late last year.

    Kay Lee, ENZ Senior Market Development Manager – Korea, said that it was an absolute pleasure to see New Zealand teachers continue to travel to South Korea to teach English during their summer break.  

    “There are so many positive outcomes from the running of this cross-cultural programme for both the Korean students and the New Zealand teachers participating.  

    "On one hand, the students get the opportunity to hone their English language skills while experiencing the New Zealand teaching style, learning more about New Zealand, including its culture and education system. Meanwhile, while teaching English and serving as ambassadors of a New Zealand education, the teachers can immerse themselves in Korean life for a few weeks, seeing new sights, trying new food and making new friends.

    "Our Korean government partner for educational programmes, EPIS, has acknowledged ENZ for its significant contribution to the programme’s success through effective teacher recruitment. These positive outcomes are testament to the strength of our NZ-Korea Government-to-Government partnership,” added Kay.  

    Upon their return to New Zealand, two of the teachers who are trained in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), shared their experiences with ENZ. Read on to hear about the reflections from their two weeks abroad.... 

    Jane Bassett (지안 (Jian) from Havelock North Intermediate School with her students.

    Jane Bassett is a Food Technology teacher at Havelock North Intermediate School and said that the experience of exchanging cultures whilst teaching in an overseas classroom environment was an absolute privilege.  

    “Our students were aged 14 – 17 years old and came from all over South Korea with family backgrounds in the Agricultural and Fisheries industries. Each student had been awarded a scholarship from the Korean government to attend the two-week intensive English programme organised by the Hyundai Research Institute. 

    "The Institute went above and beyond in their efforts to ensure an incredible experience for both the students and our group of teachers.   

    The teaching programme included a wide range of modules and as well as English grammar, we covered lessons on New Zealand culture, history, tourism, agriculture, sports, famous New Zealanders, and school life.  My class was also exposed to the New Zealand Technology curriculum and was tasked with developing a new snack product. As part of the project, I introduced them to several New Zealand snacks and Kiwi classics such as WeetBix, Marmite and Watties Baked Beans, to varying degrees of enjoyment!”  

    Students were encouraged to speak in English throughout the day via fun-games, readings, conversations and plays so that the teachers could fine-tune their English to help them become more fluent with more natural English phrasing.  

    "We also explained aspects of Māori culture and the significance of pepeha (way of introduction). The students, who were from agricultural and fisheries backgrounds, were quickly able to identify their  own awa (river) and maunga (mountain), showing their own personal connection to their land.   

    Jane said that a personal highlight was being able to spend her birthday in Seoul learning about Korean cuisine through a cooking class on kimchi making and tea ceremony in a traditional house. She admitted that this was an appropriate birthday experience for a New Zealand Food Technology teacher! 

    She summed up the experience by saying that the group of teachers gained a greater understanding of cultural diversity and appreciation of the challenges learning English poses for new learners, learnings which they will take home with them.  

    “We really hope that our students will remember their experience as fondly as we will and that they will look to study and visit New Zealand in the future.”

    Dan Greer, is a drama and social studies secondary school teacher from Logan Park School in Dunedin. He joined Jane as one of the six teachers selected to travel to South Korea, his second experience as an English language teacher in South Korea, having taught in Ulsan 12 years ago.   

    “I had such an amazing time participating in the Hyundai Research Institute’s programme. It was great to have other quality teachers on this experience with me and we were able to work together, mixing up the style of teaching and activities. I had the more beginner level class, and as a drama teacher we added games to my traditional English teaching. The students really enjoyed it, and it gave them more confidence to give things a go. 

    Dan reflected on the fact that there was one practice of teaching English in Korea that he had often thought was a little unfair, that being the naming of Korean students with English names.  

    “As an English teacher in Korea, you are often asked to name Korean students with English names. Sometimes this is because they want them, sometimes it is because they ’have’ to, and for many it is because westerners find Korean names hard to pronounce. I have named nine children in my life, one being my daughter and the other eight have been my Korean students. 

    Dan used this practice as a topic of discussion in class one day and shared his opinion that it had not always felt right to him as he felt that if Korean students were taking the time to learn the English language, that teachers should make an effort in return.  

    He then asked his students whether English teachers should have Korean names. This prompted them to ask many questions about Dan including who he is when he is not “Dan the teacher”, his whakapapa, and the meaning of his name in English.  

    Dan said “You can imagine my surprise when my students were all waiting for me when I arrived the next day. One wonderful student then stood up and using perfect English gifted me a Korean name. I was no longer just “Dan the Teacher,” but also now 도혁 (Dohyuk), which meant I was ‘leading them to a bright path’.   

    “This was such a humbling experience that I will cherish forever. For me, this is what makes teaching and life so special,” added 도혁  (Dan). 

    If the Korean organisers decide to run the NZ-Korea FTA Partnership English Language Training Programme in the future, ENZ will continue to share the applications with NZ school teachers through the Asia NZ Foundation and Schools International Education Business Association (SIEBA).  

  • From the CE: Wishing you a Happy Lunar New Year and prosperous Year of the Dragon

    The dragon is a majestic and lucky creature in folklore, symbolising bravery, creativity, and innovation. According to the Chinese horoscope, 2024 is a year full of potential and opportunities for personal growth, professional success, and social impact.  

    Potential. Opportunities for growth. Social impact. The Year of the Dragon is perfectly matched to international education in New Zealand. 

    Entering our second full year since the borders reopened, the good progress made in 2023 sets the platform for further growth in 2024. In November and December, Immigration New Zealand data tells us that the number of offshore applications exceeded all other months in 2023. While this is to be expected, it is without doubt a good sign for term one.  

    New Zealand’s reputation for delivering a quality education in a safe environment remains intact and attractive to learners.  

    This was further confirmed by the results of our student experience survey completed last year. It reported that 84% of international students rated their overall student experience positively. And that 83% of students would be likely to recommend New Zealand as a study destination compared to 81% in 2021.  

    I was also greatly heartened to see the results of our survey of New Zealanders attitudes to international education. It found that 75% of New Zealanders believe that international students benefit New Zealand. Specifically, New Zealanders were positive about the contribution international students make to local business during their study, their contribution to New Zealand’s cultural diversity and how they help local students learn about other ways of life.  

    This is a win-win. The learners are coming. They have a positive experience when they are here, and they are welcomed by the community for the contribution they make. In the Year of the Dragon this is confirmation of the potential and the social impact of international education.  

    Now we must turn that potential into reality, which is what the teams at ENZ are focused on working with you to deliver. International education at all levels is highly competitive, and potential does not just happen – even in the Year of the Dragon. In this edition of E-News you will learn about activities across all geographies and offices, and this week there is an ENZ delegation, comprising all eight universities, meeting important Government, agent and sector partners in India.  

    As I said in December, there is still much to do. 

    Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi engari he toa takitini.  

    It is not the strength of one person alone, but the strength of many that contribute to our success.

  • Advertising opportunity for Japan’s New Zealand Study Guidebook

    The publication is the only one of its kind supported by the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ). KBUNSHA distributes 20,000 copies to Japanese schools, universities and education organisations as well as education fairs and seminars.    

    ENZ’s Business Development Manager – Japan, Tomomi Kontani said that there is increased demand for information on New Zealand’s education offering.  

    “We are continuing to see significant interest in New Zealand as an education destination from students and their parents, schools, and education agents here in Japan.  

    The KBUNSHA New Zealand Study Guidebook is a trusted publication in Japan and advertising here is a great opportunity for education providers and regions to promote New Zealand education to the Japanese public. Destination marketing plays a key role in student attraction for a market like Japan with a tourism focus and we hope regions can also participate in this special opportunity to introduce their regions and activities”, said Tomomi. 

    This guidebook was distributed at the annual student fair and education stakeholder events hosted by ENZ Japan in 2023 which attracted over 1,000 people. The New Zealand Study Guidebook will remain the main information source referred to and distributed at upcoming education events in Japan.  ENZ encourages NZ providers attending the New Zealand Fair in Tokyo October 2024 to consider advertising in the Study Guidebook to reach your target audience in Japan. 

    Advertisement rates for individual providers range from approx. NZD 2,500 to NZD 6,020 for guidebook and/or website listings. With the “Premier Plan” and “Advertorial Plan”, the school logo will be listed on the new scholarship campaign page built by KBUNSHA.     Earlier this week the Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, His Excellency Phạm Minh Chính, made an official visit to New Zealand accompanied by a large delegation. Joining him was their Minister of Education and Training, Nguyen Kim Son. The visit was a timely opportunity to highlight our education cooperation with Viet Nam and to identify areas in which we can grow.  

    Viet Nam is a multi-sectored market for New Zealand’s international education sector and the fifth largest source country for international students. 

    I was delighted to witness first-hand the signing of an Education Engagement Arrangement (EEA) between New Zealand and Viet Nam, signed by our Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills, Hon Penny Simmonds, and Viet Nam’s Minister of Education and Training. This arrangement demonstrates to prospective students and their families that New Zealand is a partner of choice for the Vietnamese Government in the field of education, which aligns with the New Zealand Government’s priority to build a more resilient and sustainable sector.     Keeping with the theme of building global connections, last week I was pleased to meet with Ambassador Eduardo Saboia, the Secretary for Asia and Pacific at Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty). Brazil is our largest partner in Latin America and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, New Zealand welcomed over 3,000 Brazilian students. We know that Brazilian students are valued additions to New Zealand classrooms, and that Brazil has been a popular destination for the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Latin America. 

    Last week we also received formal confirmation that Hon Penny Simmonds, Minister for Tertiary Education and Skills, will be the Minister responsible for international education and Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao. 

    Minister Simmonds is the Member of Parliament for Invercargill, elected in 2020. Prior to her election, Penny was Chief Executive of the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) from 1997 to 2020.  

    The coalition Government has made clear its objective to double the value of exports in 10 years and we now await the Minister’s Letter of Expectations which will set out her detailed expectations for our work. 

    In closing, positive news to share is that international students are returning to New Zealand. The total number of international student visa holders, in and outside New Zealand is now 45,753 that is a 171 percent increase since our borders reopened in August 2022 (16,853). The total number of visa holders in March 2024 is 68 percent of those in March 2020 (67,331), when the borders closed. It is heartwarming to see the beaming and excited faces of the new intake of international students joining their schools, universities, Polytech's, English language institutes, and other private training establishments in the gallery of student welcomes that has been compiled here 

    After the challenges of recent years, it is a reason to celebrate.
