Prime Minister’s Scholarship group round opening soon for applications
New Zealand organisations and institutions will soon be able to apply for this year’s group round of Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and Latin America.

This award is administered by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ), enabling New Zealanders to experience international education and continue to build and maintain key trade relationships between New Zealand and key Asian and Latin American regions.

Acting Group General Manager, International Marketing, Brand & Scholarships, Sahinde Pala, said the group programme is flexible, and applicants are encouraged to think creatively about their learning programmes.

“We invite organisations and institutions to design a learning experience that can give learners the chance to follow their passion, develop connections, and make an impact in our global and local communities” she said.

Successful past applications have included semester exchanges, language immersion, indigenous-to-indigenous exchange programmes, internships, and research projects.

Applications can be made by any education provider (including universities, institutions, wānanga, iwi, hapū, whānau, institutes of technology and polytechnics, and private training establishments).

About the scholarship

All citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand over the age of 18 can apply for the scholarship. Recipients do not need to be in tertiary education, as the programme aims to make international educational opportunities accessible to all New Zealanders.

The scholarships cover tuition fees for offshore institutions, and a contribution towards internship fees, flights, living, accommodation, and visas.

Since the programme’s beginning in 2013, at least 3810 scholarships have been granted to New Zealanders.

Scholarship applications going online
What is changing?
From 1 September 2016, there will be a change in process for ENZ’s two biggest outbound scholarships, the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia and the newly launched Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Latin America. From that date, the application forms will be available here on our website.
What does this mean for scholarship applicants?
Applicants can now submit the full application online, and will be able to upload the requested documents (transcripts, CV, citizenship documents) via the online form. Even reference requests can be sent via the online form – all that’s needed is the referee’s email address. No more posting of applications or chasing on referee’s doors!

Applications for the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia go live from 1 September 2016 and close 30 September 2016.
Applications for the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Latin America go live from 1 September 2016 and close 30 October 2016.
The Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia and the Prime Minister’s Scholarships Latin America are initiatives by the government to enable New Zealand students to study or complete an internship in Asia or Latin America and, in doing so, build lasting connections.

International students learn how to crack job interviews
The ISA members have attended monthly meetings with the police throughout 2016, as part of an Ambassador programme designed to build awareness of crime prevention methods for students.
Jessica Phuang, Auckland City District NZ Police Asian Liaison Coordinator, said the mock job interviews were set up to show appreciation for the students’ involvement in the programme, as many of them will soon be graduating and searching for jobs.
“Some students were taken aback, especially with problem-solving questions which are not common practice in their own countries,” said Phuang.
The mock interviews were set up in the style of speed-dating, with Auckland Presbyterian Church generously lending its hall for the event.
Interviewers included school providers, church members, community volunteers, and police Inspectors.
Each ISA member was interviewed for eight minutes, followed by two minutes of feedback on their answers, their CV and body language – before moving on to the next interviewer.
Common feedback from interviewers was that students had a tendency to expose their weaknesses, a cultural practice to demonstrate modesty, Phuang said.
“The interviewers encouraged the students to share their strengths, and demonstrated how to do this without being seen as ‘blowing their own trumpet’.”
The ISA programme is an Auckland-based police initiative that raises issues connected with safety for international students. The initiative was also launched in Wellington in September.
New student registration at Chinese embassy
In order for a New Zealand qualification to be recognised in China, students previously requested a “Certificate for the Returned Overseas Students or Scholars” from either the education section of Chinese Embassy or Chinese Consulates in Auckland or Christchurch.
However, from 1 July, students are required to register online with the education section of the Chinese Embassy when they arrive in New Zealand in order to receive their certificate when they complete their qualification. The registration system also allows students in New Zealand to share their contact details with the Embassy in case of an emergency.
The education section of the Chinese Embassy has asked Education New Zealand to inform institutions of this change in process, and encourage institutions to tell Chinese students to register online. Students should visit http://www.chinanz-education.org to register.

Miriama Kamo to headline NZIEC 2018
Miriama will preside over the 27^th New Zealand International Education Conference and Expo to be held at Te Papa in Wellington on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 August.
“The NZIEC conference is always a calendar highlight,” says Miriama.
“It’s a conference that provides learning and networking opportunities – and a lot of fun. I’m so looking forward to seeing everyone again this year.
“I really enjoy NZIEC conferences. With over 600 delegates, you’d think it could feel impersonal but somehow this crowd pulls off the personal with aplomb.

If you didn’t attend conference last year, you’ll likely recognise Miriama from her role presenting TVNZ 1’s flagship current affairs programme Sunday. She also co-presents current affairs programme Marae, is a regular 1NEWS newsreader and is the host on TVNZ 1’s new lifestyle programme, Kiwi Living.
As a reporter for Sunday, Miriama won the prestigious Best Current Affairs Reporter gong at the Qantas Media Awards in 2005 for her investigation into alleged abuses at Porirua Hospital in the 1960s and 70s. She has also spent six years fronting TVNZ 2’s current affairs show 20/20.
Miriama emceed the 2016 and 2017 conferences in Auckland, and we’re delighted to be able to welcome her to the ‘World’s Coolest Little Capital’ later this year as we explore the theme of Inspiring Global Citizens.

NAFSA CEO to deliver opening plenary at NZIEC KI TUA 2024

NZIEC KI TUA 2024 is set to welcome rich, global, and indigenous perspectives on international education with the announcement of its opening plenary and keynote speakers over two days of the conference.

NAFSA CEO and Executive Director of NAFSA Association of International Educations, Dr Fanta Aw, will deliver the opening plenary at NZIEC KI TUA 2024 inTe Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington from 6 – 8 August.

NAFSA Association of International Educators (NAFSA) CEO and Executive Director, Dr Fanta Aw will deliver the opening plenary. Experienced leader in business, community development, governance and technology, Elle Archer (Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāti Maru – Hauraki Whānui katoa, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Porou, Ngāpuhi, Ngāi Tūhoe) will deliver a keynote address on day two of the conference.

Dr Aw will speak about the role international education can play in a time of global challenge and the global dimensions of our international education sector. Since 1996, Dr Aw has been a dedicated member and leader at NAFSA, which is the largest association serving international educators worldwide.

From 2013 to 2016, she served as NAFSA’s President and Board Chair. Dr. Aw is a recognised and highly respected figure in the fields of international education and higher education administration. Originally from Mali, West Africa, Dr. Aw has resided in both East and West Africa, as well as the United States, fostering a broad and diverse cultural perspective. Her passion for global experiences has led her to explore nearly 60 countries. Dr. Aw is a frequent keynote speaker, sharing her expertise on various topics including international educational exchanges, diversity and inclusion in higher education, and U.S. immigration. 
Keynote speaker Elle Archer’s address will draw on her experiences from a number of global initiatives across engagement, cultivating curiosity, intergenerational fairness, and learning futures. Her address will take the audience on a journey from our own backyard to global kaupapa and focus on activating our connection to the world. This also fits into a portfolio of mahi that she has been involved in: Futures Now - Activating Societal Shift, Embracing Kotahitanga.

Archer is an experienced speaker, facilitator, innovator and strategist, empowering people to achieve outcomes for the betterment of purpose. She holds roles as Heamana Whakahaere Executive Chair, Chair, Managing Director, Board Trustee and Kaiarahi for a wide range of organisations nationally and globally. She has been involved in iwi, business, industry, government, and community development for 27 years, with a background in science, geospatial technology, education, infrastructure, economic development, and emergency management. She won the ‘High-Tech Inspiring individual for 2024’ award at the NZ Hi-Tech awards.

Innovative award scheme announced in Seoul
At the seminar, agents and providers received updates from Immigration New Zealand and ENZ, had one-on-one discussions and attended the announcement of ENZ’s hotly anticipated new award scheme for Korean students, a video competition called I want to study in New Zealand. The award encourages students to research New Zealand’s education offerings, and get creative by putting together a short video (60 seconds or less) that shows what they want to study in New Zealand and why.
Five awards, ranging from NZ$5,000 - $8,000 to go towards tuition fees, will be given to the students who produce stand-out entries. Agents who put students forward for the scheme will also be rewarded, with four places up for grabs on an ENZ agent famil to New Zealand in 2017.
Cecily Lin, ENZ’s Acting Regional Lead - North Asia, says that in this market it is important to strengthen relationships with agents, and interactive schemes like this are a win-win.
“Promoting New Zealand as an education destination and attracting more Korean students starts with mobilising Korean agents.”
“Through this competition we can acknowledge the important role Korean agents play in this market, and reward their efforts in attracting both quality and high numbers of students.”

Student Visa Dashboard for November 2016
Student visas only capture students who enter New Zealand with a student visa. These students are mostly those who are planning to study for more than three months.
Student visa data is a reliable indicator of whether students are entering, remaining or leaving New Zealand. The dashboard contains detailed tables and graphs on the numbers of both first-time and total international student visas issued, with commentary on the trends to date.
The November 2016 dashboard includes summary level trends comparing to the three year average, year-to-date and the same month in the previous year. It also includes more detailed breakdowns by markets, sectors and regions focusing on year-to-date and monthly trends.

2017 student enrolments show focus on value
ENZ has today released a summary of international student enrolment information for the full year to 31 December 2017.
New Zealand institutions received 125,392 student enrolments last year, a decline of five percent (6,217 enrolments) on 2016.
The overall decrease was driven by a drop in international student enrolments in private training establishments (PTE), which were down 22 percent on 2016 figures. However, this was partially offset by increases in universities (seven percent), secondary schools (six percent), primary schools (29 percent) and intermediate schools (14 percent).
Further, there was strong growth in many regions and more students coming from a broader mix of countries including Colombia, Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand and Viet Nam.
ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson is pleased with the figures which he says reflect the recent work undertaken by government agencies to focus on quality over quantity in the sector.
“Considerable work has gone into rebalancing the sector, with increased emphasis on attracting international students to high-quality courses at New Zealand institutions in all parts of the country.
“This is reflected especially in the enrolment growth at postgraduate level. Since 2013, the number of postgraduate international students has grown consistently, with 63 percent more postgraduate international students in 2017 than in 2013.
“For this reason, despite the decline in student numbers, the 2017 economic value of the sector remained stable.”
He said that ENZ was committed to ensuring that “international students have a high-quality experience while studying here and return home as great advocates for New Zealand”.
The decline in the PTE subsector was due to a 28 percent reduction in students from India. This drove the nine percent decrease (7,661 fewer students) in Auckland from 2016, while growth in the university and secondary school subsectors supported the increased number of international students in other regions of New Zealand.
“While Auckland continues to be an important destination for international students with 60 percent of all enrolments, we want to ensure that the benefits of international education flow into the regions, not just our big cities,” says Grant.
“International students are increasingly aware of the high-quality education offering outside Auckland, with the Waikato region in particular seeing growth of eight percent in 2017. Enrolments in the Manawatu-Whanganui, Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury, Otago and Southland regions are growing too.”
The 2017 economic value of the sector is similar to the published 2016 economic value of $4.5 billion. ENZ is currently undertaking a report to calculate the economic value of international students to New Zealand for 2017. This will be published later this year.

Students flocking to Study in New Zealand website
SiNZ is now the top-ranking site in Google results for people in the UK, US, India, Thailand and Viet Nam when they search ‘studying in New Zealand’. It also ranks highly for ‘cost of living New Zealand’ and ‘universities in New Zealand’.
From December 2016 to January 2017, organic (unpaid) traffic to SiNZ increased by 24%, which means that the site is easier to find online. The SiNZ pages driving the most organic traffic include Scholarships, Study options and Work while you study.
Lucia Alarcon, ENZ’s International Digital Project Manager, said SEO (search engine optimisation) is a long-term strategy that helps make the site increasingly easy to find online.
"Having a SEO strategy helps to drive the right traffic to studyinnewzealand.govt.nz, growing value and conversion opportunities,” said Lucia.
As a result of this work, the bounce rate (the percentage of visitors who leave the site after seeing only one page) dropped from 15% to 13% between December 2016 and January this year.
Organic visits from mobile phones have increased 61% since July last year, corresponding with an impressive 70% increase in referral conversions from mobile phones. The site has also had a 44% increase in organic visits from tablet devices since last July.
These results demonstrate the importance of the site in raising awareness of the benefits of studying in New Zealand and in increasing referrals to institutions.
Other work contributing to these results includes better use of insights to create more engaging content, and tighter integration of social media channels with SEO, which ensures a more secure website that meets Google’s mobile-friendly criteria.
