  • Showcasing NZ in cyberspace

    Lisa Futschek, Regional Director – Americas, Japan and Korea, said: “It all stemmed from an industry idea during the Latin American mission in November last year. It was dusk, we were all in a charter coach chugging over the crest of a steep hill and watching the millions of lights of Medellin miraculously materialise below us, when Prof. Al Gillepsie from the University of Waikato, mused about how we should be marketing New Zealand international tertiary education via subject rather than institution. Over a Colombian meal that evening, we sketched out a schematic on what that might look like and the seeds of the virtual fair were sown.”

    International Events Manager Caroline Carruthers said the experience for students was similar to physical fairs. “Students were able to ‘visit’ individual institution’s stands, view videos, pick up brochures and business cards, and ask providers questions.

    “It was interesting to note a change in the way students plan to study overseas. A lot of high school students were planning for their tertiary education overseas. A few years ago, high school students would only ask about high school courses and wouldn’t plan that far ahead.”

    “We are evaluating the feedback we received from the institutes who participated in this pilot and will evaluate if it’s an approach to roll out to other markets and add into our event mix.”

  • Stephen Fleming flies New Zealand education flag in India

    Taking advantage of the former Black Caps captain’s massive profile in India, ENZ organised several awareness raising events fronted by Stephen Fleming to encourage Indian students to come to New Zealand.

    “Stephen has legendary status in India with the country’s love of cricket and Stephen’s own connections through the Indian Premier League where he is coach of the Chennai Super Kings. He is a very well-known and highly regarded personality and working with him to convey New Zealand’s education story has enabled us to reach a volume and quality of audience that might not have been as readily accessible otherwise,” said Ziena Jalil, ENZ Regional Director for South and South East Asia.

    “As a passionate advocate for quality education with a strong belief in the New Zealand education system, Stephen does a great job in exciting students, teachers and parents about what we have to offer.”

    Stephen was at all three Education New Zealand fairs in India in late August to interact with students and answer questions about studying in New Zealand. School and tertiary education institution visits in Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and New Delhi attracted more than a thousand potential students.

    We also secured a huge volume of quality media coverage as a result of Stephen’s promotional activities – one media briefing drew more than 50 journalists including several TV channels.

    An online campaign challenged students who were already thinking about study abroad options to take the next step and actively consider New Zealand as a study destination.

    Visitors who registered their interest in studying in New Zealand on the Education New Zealand campaign website were contacted by an education agent who provided them with more information about the courses, the criteria and support with the application process.

    By expressing interest, prospective students were automatically in to win an exclusive dinner date with Stephen Fleming. The lucky winners enjoyed a once in a lifetime experience with the cricketer who is regarded in India as one of the best captains the Black Caps have ever had.

  • NZIEC in review

    “Attendees welcomed the inclusion of market specific presentations from our offshore staff,” says Clive Jones, General Manager Business Development.

    “Think New in Action is all about matching the strengths of our education system with the needs of students looking for an international study destination. To do this effectively we have to understand our key markets and how students make their education choices.”

    Conference feedback shows that people highly valued the presentations by the two keynote speakers, Frances Valintine from the Mind Lab and Jeff Lehman from NYU Shanghai.

    Frances challenged the audience with her look into the future of education from the perspective of the upcoming generation of global digital citizens – generating a buzz of discussion over lunch and many references back to her presentation in the afternoon sessions.

    Jeff shared his first-hand knowledge of establishing international partnerships in China which seemed to resonate with the audience.

    “A particular pleasure was NYU Shanghai Vice Chancellor Jeff Lehman’s presentation. The China team had identified Jeff as a speaker, and it was rewarding to see industry colleagues respond so positively to his insightful presentation on the “four waves” involved in China relationships – and to hear the chuckles as people recognised their own experiences of working in China,” says Alex Grace, Regional Director Greater China.

    All of our international staff presenting at the conference agree that the opportunity to talk to so many people from across the industry was one of the major benefits of the conference.

    Fiona Haiko from our Japan office says: “It was a great chance to hear from different institutions about their aspirations for Japan and to get a feel for how the New Zealand industry perceives the Japanese market.”

    The benefits of getting more than four hundred industry participants together in one place also has a positive effect on our own people.

    “Coming back to New Zealand is always great – even in winter. It is sort of a reality check for the job you keep doing over the year from far away,” says Ute Haug, our Senior Market Development Manager in Berlin.

    “It is most important for me to come to New Zealand, to get a direct feel of the country, link back to headquarters and take new impressions back to Berlin.”

    Back in Riyadh, John Laxon describes the conference as “a great platform for getting organisations interested in the Middle East region and considering new ideas and initiatives” and adds that the industry seems to be on a roll after some hard work over the last couple of years.

    Thanks must go out to all the industry presenters who generously shared their professional knowledge and experience in workshops and sessions.

    “The strategic roadmaps development process has showed us that increased collaboration and cooperation is key to growth across all sectors and around the country.”

    “I am looking forward to the next year as the industry steps into the driver’s seat and begins to put some of the strategic choices and actions into operation,” says Clive.

  • Brazilian university professors visit

    Last month Education New Zealand and MFAT joined forces with Latino New Zealand to host representatives from top Brazilian universities on a visit to New Zealand. The visit aimed to establish institution to institution links between universities of the two countries, to increase the Brazilian institutions’ understanding of our universities and to raise our profile in the Science Without Borders programme.

    Eight Brazilian universities participated in the visit, including State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and Paulista State University (UNESP), all ranked in the top 500 in world.

    The visiting professors met with representatives from all eight of our universities as well as with ENZ, UNZ and the Brazilian Ambassador in New Zealand. 

    This is the first significant contact between the universities of the two countries and all of the participating universities were very keen to establish long-term research linkages with New Zealand institutions. Most of the Brazilian universities represented are well resourced in various areas of research, particularly in areas such as agriculture and plant and animal sciences.

    As a result of the visit, ENZ has received invitations to present to some of the universities and one of the professors also offered to join the New Zealand SWB presentation at his university to share his positive experience in New Zealand. Most of the visiting professors have also uploaded photos of their trip on Facebook and their university pages where they will be widely viewed by their contacts and university communities.

    Brazil is New Zealand’s largest source country for international students in Latin America. Traditionally Brazilian students come to New Zealand for short-term language courses, but in recent years we have seen an increase in the number of students from the school sector, mainly due to the Pernambuco state’s Win the World scholarship programme.

    Since New Zealand joined the Science without Borders (SWB) scheme in 2013, more than 170 Brazilian students have studied in New Zealand under the undergraduate sandwich programme.

    Although the undergraduate sandwich (study abroad) awards take up the majority of the SWB funding, the programme also funds full PhD and sandwich PhD studies. A new Masters programme has also been established and ENZ and UNZ are currently working on New Zealand’s inclusion in this programme.

    SWB also provides the following awards:

    • Inbound Fellowships which aim to bring early-career researchers and senior scholars to Brazilian universities and research centres.

    • Young Talent awards fully fund one to three year research stays in Brazil with an attractive package including round-trip tickets, relocation expenses, a tax-free highly competitive lecturer-level monthly allowance, a contribution toward research costs and funding for research assistantship.

    • Special Visiting Researcher Programme for joint projects with research groups in Brazil and work in the country for up to three months every year over two to three years. A generous grant is available to researchers including round-trip tickets for every annual visit, a tax-free highly competitive senior-level monthly allowance, a contribution toward research costs and funding for a sandwich PhD at home and a Post-doctoral Fellowship in Brazil.

    • Offshore Technological and Innovation Development awards that support the participation of Brazilian researchers, specialists and technicians in development and training activities overseas.

  • Record numbers at Viet Nam fairs

    More than 300 students visited the fair in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City attendance was up 86 per cent to more than 700 students, resulting in queues to speak to New Zealand institutions. 

    The fairs showcased 34 New Zealand education institutions from secondary schools, private English language colleges to technical colleges and tertiary institutions, all promoting their courses and campus life to Vietnamese students.

    Students and their parents also had the opportunity to learn about the various scholarships that are available from Viet Nam International Education Development and New Zealand Aid.

    Ziena Jalil, ENZ Regional Director for South and Southeast Asia said: “Viet Nam is an important market for New Zealand education institutions. With nearly 2,000 Vietnamese students already studying in New Zealand, it is the second largest source market within ASEAN for international students.

    “This year’s fairs in Viet Nam helped showcase the true spirit of New Zealand’s innovative education system and the pastoral care commitment that New Zealand institutions have for all students.”

  • New Zealand shines at China Education Expo

    As the photos show, New Zealand’s presence at the fair had a big impact, with the Kiwiana finger puppets proving a popular and distinctive crowd pleaser as students assessed a sea of study options. 

    Initial feedback from industry participants also noted an increase in interest from agents; they report New Zealand is more and more in demand by their customers. The Beijing agent seminar had 120 participants, the majority of which were agents, who had come along to meet New Zealand institutions. 

    Alex Grace, Regional Director – Greater China, says collective hard work by government and industry to build awareness and raise perceptions of quality is clearly having an impact.

    “ENZ, as the government’s lead agency for international education, has paid particular attention to raising the bar in terms of how we package and present the New Zealand education experience. That was noticed and commented on with envy by other countries.”

    “It is gratifying to work in partnership with such a committed and professional group as that which signed up for CEE and our agent seminars. It is only by working together that we’ll increase the impact of our activities and a make a difference.”

    New Zealand: Country of Honour for CEE 2015

    And there is more good news: New Zealand will be the Country of Honour for CEE 2015. Alex says: “Ambassador Carl Worker and I attended the Gala Dinner event at which New Zealand was named as next year’s CEE Country of Honour. This is a major achievement, representing not only the relationships developed by ENZ, but also the commitment over the years by our industry. Please start planning now to participate in October/November next year!”

  • Building online brand ambassadors

    In June this year, to make sure we were getting the best out of our social media we merged 11 local Facebook pages into one global Facebook page – www.facebook.com/studyinnewzealand

    This move was important to both grow our online community of brand ambassadors and deliver a consistent global message to prospective students.

    At the time of the merge, our Facebook community had 120,679 ‘likes’. The global page has well and truly surpassed all our initial goals, rocketing to 268,300 fans in just five months. On average we reach 3 million fans a week, including 80,000 engaged fans each week.

    Breaking it down, our Facebook audience is 45 percent female, 55 percent male and is aged between 18 and 24. Our largest audience is in India followed by Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia and Colombia.

    Compared to competitor countries, Study in New Zealand is performing very strongly with more ‘likes’ than Australia, Canada and the UK – we just have the USA to catch.

    In recent weeks our global community manager has noticed a significant shift in the conversation among prospective students on Facebook. When we first launched the global page, most of the questions were very high level – ‘how do I study in New Zealand?’ and ‘what is New Zealand like?’ The questions we’re getting now are much more specific and qualified;

    “I am from Bangladesh. I am interested to pursue a diploma at SIT, will Invercargill be an affordable place to live?”

    “What is the different b/w diploma and masters? Which is more job oriented?”

    “I want to know how’s New Zealand for aeronautical engineering in bachelor program & what is the cost for it?”

    Another notable change is that our community is starting to self-moderate – answering each other’s questions with great advice or helpful links. We have a number of New Zealand institutions and agents who are joining in to provide great support through this channel to prospective students with questions.

    In November a social campaign will be launched to further grow and stimulate this online audience with further activity planned for 2015. With an absence of Facebook in China, we are currently developing an equivalent social media platform on the popular site Weibo .

  • NZ-India Sports Scholarships announced

    Minister Nathan Guy and former Black Cap’s captain Stephen Fleming, along with High Commissioner Grahame Morton presented the awards at an event which also marked 101 days until the start of the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

    Education New Zealand’s Regional Director for South and South East Asia, Ziena Jalil congratulated the students on winning the year-long scholarships to study at tertiary institutions around New Zealand.

    “The level of students applying for the scholarships was particularly high – we are working to increase the quality and level of qualifications studied by Indian students in New Zealand and these scholarships reinforce that,” says Ziena.

    The scholarship recipients are studying programmes ranging from bachelor degrees in sport and exercise to postgraduate study in sports physiotherapy and clinical exercise physiology. They will be studying at AUT, the Universities of Otago and Waikato, Unitec, UCOL and SIT.

    Among the recipients are twin sisters Tashi and Nungshi Malik who are the first twins to have climbed Mt Everest, and Surabhi Date a former captain of the Indian Women’s Rugby Team.

    “It was great to bring all the recipients together to receive their awards at the Cricket World Cup event in front of more than 250 Indian government, education and business contacts as well as a New Zealand business mission,” said Ziena.

    “The evening was a showcase for New Zealand as a country and particularly our world-class reputation for excellence in sports and education.”

    The New Zealand India Sports Scholarships programme is one of the several activities underway to deepen New Zealand’s education relationship with India. The initiative was first announced as part of the Prime Ministers’ Education Initiative which seeks to enhance bilateral tertiary education cooperation between New Zealand and India.

    Almost 12,000 students from India studied in New Zealand in 2013 making it the second largest source country for international students to New Zealand.

  • China's First Lady receives Honorary Doctorate

    Madame Peng was awarded the Doctor of Literature (honoris causa) in recognition of her international contributions to the performing arts and health and education programmes.

    In the citation in advance of bestowing the honorary doctorate, Sir Richard Taylor noted Madame Peng’s distinguished academic and public service career:

    In the 1980s, she was the first person in China to graduate with a Master’s degree in traditional ethnic music from the prestigious China Conservatory of Music, where she is now both a professor and PhD supervisor. Today she holds a wide array of senior positions in her areas of artistic expertise, including Vice-President of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Vice-Chair of the Chinese Musicians Association, and Dean of the Art Academy of the People's Liberation Army, where she holds the rank of Major-General. Madame Peng is also an Adjunct Professor at Peking University, China’s most highly-regarded university and a close and longstanding partner of Massey University.

    Within China, Madame Peng has worked for many years to promote rural development, girls' and women's education, and public health. She has been an ambassador for tobacco control since 2009, and serves as Voluntary Advocate for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis control and prevention for the Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission, which is another Massey University partner in China. In 2011 the World Health Organisation likewise appointed her as a Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, a role that has involved her in a series of high-profile international events to promote concerted action on the two diseases. 

    In March this year, the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) named Madame Peng as a Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women’s Education in recognition of her commitment to empowering girls and women through access to quality education, her outstanding contribution to fighting inequalities in education, her devoted service to human development and creativity, and her dedication to UNESCO’s ideals and aims. Addressing Madame Peng, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said, “To succeed, we need role models, and you are an immense role model for millions of young girls in China and beyond”.

    ENZ’s China Team had suggested a visit by Madame Peng to CoCA, due to its status as the first art and design school outside of North America to be granted “substantial equivalency” by the US National Association of Schools of Art & Design.

    “This visit – the only separate programme for Madame Peng while she was in New Zealand – showcased a niche area where New Zealand institutions are at the forefront globally”, says ENZ's Regional Director Alexandra Grace. 

    “It was clear from the ceremony that Madame Peng was very pleased to receive this honour, and she was visibly impressed by the calibre of students’ work during her post-conferment tour.”

    In her address, Madame Peng expressed her “heartfelt thanks”, describing Massey University as the “leading university in New Zealand” that had produced many outstanding graduates including government ministers, Olympic champions, an All Black coach and many business leaders.

    “All are important contributors to the prosperity of the country and I believe, with this wonderful faculty and its students, Massey University will enjoy an even greater future," she said.

  • Roundtable explores distance education recognition

    The roundtable involved senior officials from Chinese education agencies and representatives from the University of Otago, Massey University, New Zealand Qualifications Authority, Universities New Zealand and Education New Zealand.

    The recognition of New Zealand distance education programmes has been an item of discussion between New Zealand and Chinese authorities for many years. Currently all foreign qualifications delivered by distance, or with a distance component, are not recognised by Chinese authorities.

    “This isn’t a New Zealand-specific issue,” says ENZ's Regional Director Alexandra Grace.  “We are very much at first steps, in terms of building understanding of how we assure quality outside of traditional face-to-face qualification delivery. Greater understanding of our processes may also contribute to China’s domestic reform of its local distance qualifications."

    The New Zealand-China Free Trade Agreement signed in 2008 included commitments to undertake work on “evaluation of the quality assurance criteria for qualifications which include a distance delivery component.”

    Discussions on the recognition of New Zealand distance education qualifications have been ongoing since then.

    The roundtable showcased Otago University’s renowned Master in Aviation Medicine qualification which is fully taught by distance and has been offered for over 26 years. Over 100 students are currently studying the programme from the Middle East, North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Graduates of the programme meet internationally recognised ‘best practice’ standards for aviation medicine practitioners and are frequently employed by airlines including Cathay Pacific, Emirates and Qantas.

    The roundtable also featured Massey University’s Master’s degree programmes in Veterinary Medicine (Biosecurity) and Public Health (Biosecurity) which has been completed by nine senior Chinese officials. The qualifications, which require four months to be spent at Massey and the remainder by distance study from China (one year in total), represent collaboration in teaching between Massey’s teaching and research groups, EpiCentre, and the Centre for Public Health Research. 

    Further work is slated on sharing of information and best practice.
