ICEF ANZA returns to New Zealand
We’re pleased to announce that Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre will host ANZA from March 4-6, 2026. ICEF ANZA will showcase New Zealand as a study destination to 160+ agents from all over the world, and is open to education providers from both Australia and New Zealand. ICEF ANZA was last in New Zealand in April 2024, where global agents and New Zealand and Australian education providers came together in Christchurch.
ICEF ANZA is an Australasia-focused event that gives education providers from Australia and New Zealand the opportunity to meet with top international student recruitment agents from around the world who have a focus on these key study destinations.
ENZ Group General Manager International and Sector Engagement, Sahinde Pala, said ENZ is excited to welcome ICEF ANZA back to New Zealand at a time when we are well positioned to attract more international students.“We encourage institutions to participate, as well as to invite agents to visit their regions before and after the event, to experience more of our beautiful country first hand," she said.

A new group of US Kiwi Ambassadors
Welcome Kiwi Ambassadors!
It was so difficult that ENZ decided the group of runners-up would be offered the chance to be ‘Honorary’ Kiwi Ambassadors. This meant they could still share their semester experience in New Zealand through the Study in New Zealand Instagram.
The #StudyinNZ page will therefore shortly welcome the next round of Kiwi Ambassadors, the 13 award recipients, and a further group of 29 Honorary Kiwi Ambassadors when they arrive in New Zealand in July.
The Instagram page has quickly become a hit with the US students and has already attracted almost 15,000 followers. Certainly, as you can see if you view the page, the current Kiwi Ambassadors have had no trouble finding picturesque opportunities during their semester in New Zealand! Images of nature, food, sunsets and wildlife predominate.
ENZ’s staff in the US, Amy Rutherford and Alanna Dick, have found the #StudyinNZ Instagram page a powerful tool in promoting New Zealand as an education destination.
“When I suggest students and study abroad advisors follow Study In New Zealand on Instagram, the conversation about studying abroad in New Zealand continues long after the study fair or campus visit is over,” says Alanna.
“It’s one thing me telling students what it’s like studying in New Zealand, it’s another when the students can see it in real time for themselves!”
More about the Awards
Education New Zealand partnered with the eight New Zealand universities and six institutes of technology and polytechnics to offer these awards as part of their support of the Institute of International Education’s Generation Study Abroad initiative, and its aim of doubling the number of US students who study abroad.
For Semester Two this year, ENZ awarded four US students the $2,000 Generation Study Abroad Travel Award to cover their airfare. The students are attending the University of Auckland, the University of Otago, and EcoQuest, a Private Training Establishment.
The universities awarded nine US students New Zealand Universities Excellence Awards (NZUEAs) which cover $500 of tuition fees and other associated costs. The students come from universities all over the US, from University of Florida to California Polytechnic State University.

Objectives

FutureLearn platform and courses
- New Zealand’s offerings include short courses from leading universities, English language schools, vocational PTEs, Institutes of Technology, and edtech educators including virtual reality developers and game designers.
- These not for credit courses are on average 6-8 hours long from providers across the sector.
- FutureLearn is a global online education platform jointly owned by the UK’s Open University and The SEEK Group with an existing community of approximately 15 million learners globally.
- These courses are available to learners (including teachers and educators) all over the world, including here in New Zealand.
FutureLearn is actively promoting this campaign in the following prototype markets:
- Thailand, Japan, Korea, China, India, Brazil, Indonesia, USA, Vietnam, Germany, UK, Colombia
In addition, ENZ will be promoting this opportunity to its global learner database, and through other owned channels, including website and social media.

The Campaign’s place in the wider strategy for international education
- ENZ is leading a programme of work that focuses on the diversification of international education products and services. It forms part of the Government’s Recovery Plan for International Education, under the “Transforming to a More Sustainable Future State” workstream.
- The New Zealand International Education Strategy, 2018 is clear in its goals for achieving a thriving and globally connected New Zealand through world-class international education.
- Goal 2 of the Strategy is Sustainable Growth - the international education sector flourishes through diversification of markets, people flows and innovative products and services.
Talking points for providers
- We are proud to be part of ENZ’s new pilot, launched with FutureLearn.
- This initiative will showcase a selection of taster courses from New Zealand providers to worldwide online learners, under the national Think New brand umbrella.
- The 12-month initiative launched 8 June and is part ENZ’s Diversifying Products and Services programme of work.
- By taking part, we are supporting the Government’s Recovery Plan for International Education.
Provider participation benefits
These messages are useful when talking about the campaign to other staff in your organisation- This initiative is an opportunity to further raise our profile to a global audience, benefiting from the exposure generated by FutureLearn and the ENZ-funded global campaign.
- We’re able to test a new recruitment and distribution channel at little cost.
- As providers, we receive notification of any further interest generated by these online courses, which could lead to further study opportunities – either online (on FutureLearn or elsewhere), or onshore when current border restrictions sufficiently ease.
- As part of the process FutureLearn worked alongside providers like us, supporting us while we created (or optimised) content for the platform.
- Standard membership fees are being waived by FutureLearn for this prototype.
- ENZ is also funding a global campaign via FutureLearn to promote the prototype.
More about FutureLearn
- FutureLearn offer courses from around 250 providers from around the world. These courses range from tasters to full online degrees.
- 15 million learners use the platform. Many (27%) users are UK-based but increasing numbers of learners across the globe are accessing FutureLearn.
Tips for promoting the campaign
By aligning our marketing activity, ENZ and providers can tell clear and consistent message about the online study courses available with FutureLearn and providers. Here are some tips to start promoting your FutureLearn courses on your channels:
Tip 1: Use the digital assets available in your promotions:
There are plenty of campaign assets designed with campaign messaging available for you to use now on The Brand Lab. Assets have been specifically created to use across websites, emails, social channels & other digital advertising.

Tip 2: Share our FutureLearn & Online Learning blogs
We’ve created a blog for a learner audience to promote starting a New Zealand education online, through the FutureLearn product. Check out the blog here and share on your own social channels or website.

UIP data collection: go-live 31 March
There is a temporary exemption from the new requirements for providers that offer only English language training, but any UIP that provides English language training only may still use the UIP data collection system to return data if they wish to do so.
The new system is an outcome of the recent change to Rule 5.1.3 of the Private Training Establishment Registration Rules 2013, making the requirement to submit information to the Ministry of Education using a new automated data system a condition of PTE registration.

NZIEC 2018: Register for AFS pre-conference workshops
The partnership will see AFS deliver breakout sessions throughout conference as well as two pre-conference workshops exploring the conference theme of Inspiring Global Citizens.
AFS is a leading global organisation promoting international study, with education and volunteer programmes across 98 countries empowering people of all ages and backgrounds with intercultural knowledge, skills and understanding.
Grant McPherson, ENZ Chief Executive, said the partnership reflects New Zealand’s vibrant international education ecosystem.
“AFS has a well-established track record of fostering global citizens so we’re delighted to have AFS contribute its expertise to our conference discussions relating to global citizenship,” said Grant.
“NZIEC delegates may be particularly interested in exploring practical ways in which they can implement global competence within their institutions at AFS’ two in-depth pre-conference workshops.”
AFS New Zealand National Director, Doris Cuthell, is excited about showcasing the organisation’s expertise at NZIEC.

Pre-conference workshop 1: Global competence in international education: What is it? Why does it matter? How can I foster it?
This workshop explores the concept of global competence, why it is of growing importance and why your organisation should be engaging with it.
You will have a chance to participate in experiential activities that enhance intercultural skills. We will discuss strategies for implementing these activities in different settings and identify ways to turn brief experiences into long-lasting learning for your audience.

Pre-conference workshop 2: High-tech solutions for global competence programmes
Research shows that merely coming into contact with cultural differences doesn’t develop global competence in students. However, students do develop these skills when taught within a developmental, experiential and holistic framework.
This workshop offers three frameworks that can provide a foundation for your curriculum to build global competence in both inbound and outbound students.

Ministers to address NZIEC 2018
Chris Hipkins
NZIEC 2018 marks Chris Hipkins’ first address to conference delegates as Minister of Education, after speaking to delegates last year in his capacity as Opposition Spokesperson. Minister Hipkins will be outlining his priorities for the international education portfolio on Friday morning.
Minister Iain Lees-Galloway will be speaking for the first time at NZIEC and is scheduled to address delegates on Thursday morning.
ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson welcomes the involvement of the Ministers in NZIEC.

NZIEC and SIEBA partner for the school sector
ENZ is pleased to welcome SIEBA as NZIEC’s programme partner, offering a range of sessions and workshops of value to school sector delegates.
SIEBA is the association for international education in New Zealand schools and has more than 350 member schools across the country. It has become an influential agency both within New Zealand and internationally.
NZIEC will be this year’s most important event for international education professionals in the school sector. The programme features a wide range of sessions specifically designed to add value for delegates from primary and secondary schools.
Dr Stephen Holmes, one of the world’s foremost experts on school marketing and reputation, will lead two workshops on ‘Authentic Marketing’ and ‘Evidence Led Positioning and Planning’ and offers school delegates the opportunity of one-on-one sessions during NZIEC.
Attendees will also gain valuable market insights from Japan, our Country of Honour, and can hear about the new school sector strategy for Vietnam and how to get involved.
Back by popular demand is the SIEBA schools’ luncheon, an opportunity to gather with sector colleagues to hear inspirational speakers and to network.

Register for ENZ’s market intelligence webinars for South Korea and Japan
An ENZ market intelligence webinar for Korea has been organised and registration is now open. It will offer local market updates and insights and share Immigration New Zealand updates.
Registration is also open for an ENZ market intelligence webinar focusing on the Japanese market. This will include local market updates and insights, 2020 dates and regional engagements and NZQA Amendments to the Code of Practice.
ENZ’s Director Asia, John Laxon, said the industry webinars will be a great opportunity for New Zealand education providers to receive local in-market intelligence from ENZ staff.
“This will ensure in-market recruitment efforts are well targeted. Our 2019 webinar series is providing market insights and updates from around the Asia region, taking into account strong industry interest in the 2018 series.”
