ENZ workshops in September
Workshop 1: Students’ view from their window travelling along the digital freeway
Technology is changing the way education providers engage with potential students. Placing you in the driver’s seat on the digital freeway, you will experience first-hand what international students see as they race toward their destination. As with any road trip, there are detours, attractions and temptations that can change the direction.
This workshop will use a segmentation model to identify what tools are available and what skills are required, and give examples of how education providers, at various stages of digital maturity, can leverage them for success.
Target audience: Participants involved in international strategy, marketing, recruitment and admissions.
Outcomes:
- Identify how your organisation is segmented and what tools are appropriate
- Gain exposure to example initiatives that best-practice providers have used to improve their student recruitment efficiency
- Connect with other practitioners about their experiences and identify opportunities for further exploration.
Workshop 2: Beyond the great firewall: social media in China
Coming to grips with digital and social media in China is no easy task. Between VPNs, firewalls and the influx of local alternative platforms, it can be a difficult market to gain cut-through.
This workshop will empower participants to get beyond the great firewall and embrace digital and social media platforms in China. It will showcase best practice case studies and how best to engage prospective students.
Target audience: Marketing and recruitment professionals and student services staff. It is best suited to those who already have some knowledge of Chinese social media.
Outcomes:
- Learn how to incorporate Chinese social media into your wider recruitment strategy
- Gain an understanding of the financial input required
- Learn how to integrate your campaigns with agents.

Where you have provided us with your express consent, we may collect information relating to your visa applications directly from Immigration New Zealand.

While you use our services, we may collect any of the following further information from you:- Your name, email address, residential address, telephone number, gender, date of birth and password.
- Your bank account number and other financial information.
- Information about your education, work experience, skills and qualifications.
- Information on your business such as your company name and number, company size, business type and professional profile.
- Information that you provide to us when we communicate via writing, email or phone.
- Details of your browser, domain name and IP address, and the details of any website you linked from to our website.
- Information obtained from third parties in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
- Other additional information required from time to time.
Unfortunately, if you choose not to provide information when we ask for it, you may not be able to use our website or the services we offer.
Enrolment Opportunities:
We may also collect aggregated information generated by our systems, which tracks traffic to, and within, our Website or Platform, but does not relate to you personally. We are providing a service to the school/education provider that you submit an application to through the Platform and so we are collecting and processing application information solely on such third party’s behalf. How do we use your personal information?
Personal information collected through any Digital Platform or the ‘Join Us’ , 'Subscribe', 'Contact Us' and any other form on this website, or from Immigration New Zealand will be collected by Education New Zealand and will be used to provide you with any service that you have requested, for our legitimate interests, or in accordance with your consent, including for the purposes of:
- For research, surveys, and other statistical or analytical purposes in connection with our functions.
- Meeting any of our legal or other regulatory obligations.
- Providing your personal information to Education New Zealand’s agents, education providers and institutions.
- Facilitating communications between Education New Zealand, you and/or its agents, education providers and institutions.

Use of cookies
A cookie is a small amount of data that is sent to your browser from a web server and stored on your computer's hard drive, then sent back to the server by your browser each time you access certain sections of our Digital Platforms.
Like many organisations, Education New Zealand uses cookies to store and track information about you when you are on our Digital Platforms so that we can provide personalised services that better match your needs and interests. We also use cookies, including Google Analytics for the Advertising Features Remarketing with Google Analytics and Google Analytics Demographics and Interest Reporting and DoubleClick cookies, to collect information on how you use the website.

Other than as stated above, information will not be shared with third parties outside of Education New Zealand (or its affiliates and related parties) except where required by law. Munchkin cookie

Who will we share your personal information with and why

- Our service providers that we have engaged to provide a service to us in relation to our functions, this website or any service that we have agreed to provide you. For example, we may share information about you with a service provider that we have engaged to provide technology services or customer support services.
- Any other organisation or person that you have authorised us to disclose your information to.
- Immigration New Zealand.
Information we share with our agents, education providers and institutions will be processed, stored and secured by the relevant organisation in accordance with their own privacy policy. These agents, education providers and institutions are located either within the EU (agents) or New Zealand (education providers or institutions). Before you consent to us disclosing your personal information to our agents, education providers or institutions we recommend that you review their privacy policies and agree to the terms on which they will process your personal information.
Any personal information that we disclose to our third party service providers to enable them to perform a service for us will be processed in accordance with our obligations under the Privacy Act 2020 and the principles of the GDPR. Where any personal information is to be transferred outside of the EU or New Zealand for the purpose of processing, we will ensure that appropriate technical and organisational measures are in place to ensure the third party service provider protects the data to the same standard as required under the GDPR (e.g. the information will be transferred to a country with adequate privacy laws, to an organisation who is certified under the US/EU Privacy Shield, or we will enter into standard contractual clauses (as approved by the European Commission) with those service providers.

Retention of personal information

Your rights
You have the right to view and change any personal information Education New Zealand holds about you at any time.

Immigration New Zealand Data Agreement
Where you have provided your express consent, personal information collected through any Digital Platform (on this website) will be collected by Education New Zealand and will be used for the purposes of providing your personal information to Immigration New Zealand to request and receive updates on the status of any student visa applications you have submitted. This will enable us to provide a more personalised digital experience, and enable us to undertake certain research and statistical analysis associated with our functions.
Additional terms relating to registration of an ENZ Account
You can choose to create an ENZ Account to collate and store information relating to your student application.
It is your responsibility to maintain the confidentiality and security of any information that may be used to access your ENZ Account, including your password.
ENZ reserves the right at its discretion to suspend, modify or terminate access to your ENZ Account at any time with or without notice to you.
Any information that you rely on through use of an ENZ Account is entirely at your own risk. You are solely responsible for the actions you take in reliance of the information available on or accessed through your ENZ Account.
ENZ Accounts are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. ENZ does warrant that ENZ Accounts will be free from errors, timely or secure.
Exclusion of our liability
You acknowledge and agree that:

Thank you to NZIEC KI TUA Partners
The conference was attended by 599 delegates and saw 42 sessions delivered over two days by 85 speakers, including expert panellists.
Thanks again to our NZIEC KI TUA 2023 Partners; our Country of Honour: People’s Republic of China, CSCSE, Streamliner, Student Safe, Flywire, idpconnect, IELTS, Southern Cross Travel Insurance, Kiwiflora Nurseries, Yoobee College of Creative Innovation, Orbit Protect, Host Families, Christchurch Foundation and the Tui Corridor Project, University of Canterbury, University of Canterbury International College, Lincoln University and The University of Auckland.
Being the first in-person conference since 2019, connection was more important than ever and our NZIEC KI TUA 2023 exhibition hall was renamed The Experience Garden where delegates could do just that – engage, connect, and experience.
Delegates who visited the team at the Country of Honour’s Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE) table, were able to have their name written in Chinese calligraphy and learn more about studying in China.
Locally made ice cream was provided by Southern Cross Travel Insurance, barista-made coffee from Student Safe and a special tea café was brought to delegates by idpconnect and IELTS.
Delegates also had the opportunity to experience a virtual reality journey with Yoobee College of Creative Innovation.
Thanks to the Kiwiflora Nurseries massage relaxation corner, delegates also got a chance to rest with a neck and shoulder massage and relax in their cosy and tranquil waiting area. Kiwiflora Nurseries partnered with NZIEC KI TUA and the Christchurch Foundation and the Tui Corridor Project to help us in our commitment to sustainability; for every delegate registration, a native tree was planted, fostering a greener future for generations to come.
The Host Families photography headshots activation was a hit with over 80 photos taken by the photographer.
The Orbit Protect Better Health Quiz provided delegates with a little downtime and a fun competition as they went head-to-head in earning points for prizes.
And last but not least, much appreciation goes to our partner Flywire as the Education New Zealand Manapou ki ta Ao Tamaki Makaurau Auckland office now has a new piece of artwork based on the theme of ‘How collaboration will shape the future of global education’ for their wall.

This year’s conference was attended by 449 delegates and saw 31 sessions delivered over two days by 96 speakers, including expert panellists.

The High Commission of India provided the entertainment for the gala dinner, with the Natraj Dance Company and Shivam dance company dance groups delivering dazzling performances to delegates.
To highlight the country of honour’s unique culture, henna artist Saburi Kesharwani adorned delegates with henna tattoos in the Experience Garden.
There were many other engaging activations in our Experience Garden, which was a place delegates could do just that – engage, connect, and experience.
Education USA helped attendees uncover their inner superhero. Teacher Tapahia Heke is New Zealand’s only ‘superhero reader’ and was at the conference to help delegates find their superhero alter-ego – right down to the outfit. Graphic designer and animation professional Pita Mei brought the readings to life, providing delegates with a personalised superhero illustration to take home.
Delicious refreshments were key in the experience garden. Delegates enjoyed locally made ICEF-cream provided by ICEF and barista-made coffee from Student Safe.
Thanks to IDP Education Ltd there was a dedicated breakout space for conference attendees. The IDP IELTS lounge was a space to network, learn about the latest international education insights and catch up on their emails.
Thanks to Touchprint, who created the ‘Touchprint School Yard’, a space for the school sector delegates to connect and share.
The Pearson photography headshots activation was a hit, with just under 100 photos taken by local professional photographer Rebecca McMillan.
Delegates got the opportunity to try out some of the cutting-edge technology that some of our New Zealand EdTech companies offer. Pictured here is Dr Anatole Bogatski, Executive Director of QTI trying out the mixed reality prototype that ENZ is testing as part of its innovation and growth programme. Next to him is JIX Founder Sakthi Ranganathan trying out the tool that he has helped develop. Other New Zealand EdTechs also found in the Experience Garden included Pipi Learning, ByteEd and Chasing Time English.
Much appreciation goes to our partner Flywire as the Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland office now has a new piece of artwork based on insights from attendees for their office wall.
NZIEC KI TUA 2024 was not just about nurturing the relationships within our sector. Thanks to our conference partner Edified, it was about nurturing our whenua (land) too! In our commitment to sustainability; for every delegate registration, Edified planted a native tree, fostering a greener future for generations to come.
449 native trees were planted over the weekend after conference.
We’re grateful for the local hāpu, iwi and community who got stuck in and helped with the planting. Part of the team was international student Momone Akiyoshi, who’s from Japan and is currently studying at Paraparaumu College. Her host sister Marion Daste (left) and host mum Jo Picot (right) brought her along because they thought it would be nice for Momone to be part of regenerating the land and having the opportunity of planting native trees while in New Zealand.

Celebrating our education ties with Thailand
Students and their families were able to explore a variety of international study options available in New Zealand with 50 New Zealand institutions providing high-quality representation and advice on the New Zealand education offering.
Ziena Jalil, Education New Zealand Regional Director South – South East Asia, said: “The fact that New Zealand education institutions have visited Thailand every year for 20 years to demonstrate the benefits of studying with them in New Zealand, illustrates our long-term commitment to Thailand and to our Thai partners.”
“This year’s theme for the fair was “New Experiences, New Ideas” and it was important to have the full range of New Zealand institutions and sectors to show the true spirit of New Zealand where new thinking is celebrated and where there are multiple opportunities.”
“With more than 3,000 Thai students studying in New Zealand this year, we are already providing high quality education and life-changing experiences for many Thai students” said Ziena.
Over 400 people attended the fair representing an increase of seven percent from last year, with pre-event publicity including media releases and a media briefing to encourage student registration and boost awareness of the fair.
The fair was the peak event for New Zealand education in Thailand following our August roadshow to Thai secondary schools in Bangkok, promoting New Zealand study opportunities and particularly English language courses. As part of the roadshows ENZ visited three schools and participated in an exhibition held by a network of Thai public schools offering English language programmes.
Education New Zealand also takes this opportunity to provide you with a resourcing update for Thailand. Recruitment is well underway for a new Marketing and Strategic Relationships Manager to be based in Bangkok. Say hello to the new, improved Brand Lab
Over the past quarter, ENZ's marketing team has been developing a new and improved Brand Lab system – due to go live tomorrow, Thursday 11 May.
ENZ Content Marketing Project Manager, Laura Lingard, said the site has many new features, all of which are much more user-friendly than the previous Brand Lab.
“The new site has been designed with the user front of mind, even giving guidance around the different types of assets and how these can be used to promote the benefits of a New Zealand education,” said Laura.
The new Brand Lab also has improved search functionality to make it easier for users to find what they’re looking for – as well as a suite of new assets including translated videos and artwork.
“The Brand Lab is a useful resource for providers to promote their individual education offering, and it’s also a way for the sector to work together to build a consistent brand story about New Zealand ,” said Laura.

There are two key student recruitment seasons. Depending on the market, these are March/April and September/October.
Confirmed events and dates will be published on the ENZ event calendar on 31 October. Event registration will open shortly after for events taking place during the first six months of 2018.

NZIEC 2017 to be biggest ever
More than 700 delegates, presenters, exhibitors and sponsors will descend on SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland to connect and discuss significant issues and opportunities for our industry.
“The fact that more than 700 delegates are participating this year is a ringing endorsement of the health of the industry,” says ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson.
“We’ve invested in NZIEC as a key initiative to bring all parts of our industry together to connect, exchange ideas and develop new ventures. This year’s theme is leadership, and we’re looking forward to two days of great presentations and stimulating discussions to drive the next phase of the industry’s development.”

Tokyo education fair showcases Māori culture
This was the fourth annual ENZ fair in Japan and included representatives from 40 New Zealand institutions as well as SIEBA representatives.
Misa Kitaoka, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, said this year she wanted to make the fair special by incorporating an element that was uniquely New Zealand, but that also resonated with the Japanese attendees.
“Being part of Te Rautaki Māori, ENZ’s Māori Steering Committee, I have had the opportunity to learn some te reo and Māori cultural practices, which I realised has many commonalities with those of the Japanese,” said Misa.
The fair began with a mihi to welcome a group of junior high school students and teachers from Tokyo Seitoku University Junior and Senior High School, a private secondary school that sends all 150 of its year 3 junior high school students to New Zealand schools for one term every year.
Following the mihi, a group of over 30 students from Hamilton Boys’ and Girls’ High School performed a haka and waiata which brought tears to the eyes of many students and parents.
“The kapa haka performance increased visitor numbers for sure – it was such a moving performance. A student from Hamilton Boys’ who’s half Maori, half Japanese translated the meaning of each performance to attendees in Japanese, so impressive!
This year’s fair also saw an increasing number of mothers interested in taking their young children to New Zealand.
“With the Japanese government’s focus on improving the nation’s English language capability in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the average age of English learners in Japan is getting younger,” Misa said.
To address this demand, ENZ is working closely with SIEBA to promote its PSP programme, representing more than 40 primary schools available to receive international students over five years of age.
The ENZ Japan fair in 2019 will be held during the Rugby World Cup on 22 September 2019 followed by an agents/educators’ seminar and networking event in Tokyo on 24 September 2019.
