Victoria offering New Zealand’s first ethical leadership MOOC
Ethical Leadership in a Changing World is the latest Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) delivered through VictoriaX, the VUW edX platform.
The six-week course will teach students the theory and practice of ethical leadership, with a focus on organisations, through the New Zealand perspective.
Course instructor Professor Karin Lasthuizen, Brian Picot Chair in Ethical Leadership in VUW’s School of Management, says the course will help learners explore the role of ethics in organisational decision making.
“We focus on organisations in this course: exploring the role of ethics in organisational decision-making, analysing the actions of leaders from an ethical perspective, and helping learners apply these ideas to their own style of leadership,” said Professor Lasthuizen.
“Drawing on case studies from New Zealand—one of the least corrupt countries in the world, according to Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI)— the course also features recognised leaders from the country’s public, private and NGO sectors to inform students about the main issues that ethical leadership should address.”
This is the fourth MOOC for the VUW edX platform, which has a wide global reach. The platform has attracted well over 16,000 international learners to date, ranging in age from 10 to 90-years-old.
The course follows Antarctica: From Geology to Human History and New Zealand Landscape as Culture: Maunga (Mountains), and Restorative Justice and Practice: Emergence of a Social Movement, launched last year, and New Zealand Landscape as Culture: Islands (Ngā Motu), launched in 2017.
Ethical Leadership in a Changing World starts 3 July 2019.

University of Auckland launches new Aulin College in China
Aulin College is a joint institute with China’s Northeast Forestry University (NEFU) in the city of Harbin, Heilongjiang Province. It took on its first cohort of approximately 270 Chinese students in September, and will deliver courses at bachelor’s and master’s level in biotechnology, chemistry, computer science and technology – big data and ecology.
Students of Aulin College will be taught in part by University of Auckland academic staff on NEFU’s campus, then transfer to Auckland in July 2022.
Education New Zealand Director for Greater China, Miranda Herbert, says the launch of Aulin College is another significant milestone in the educational relationship between New Zealand and China.
“Transnational education is a key strategy in the internationalisation of New Zealand education,” she says. “New Zealand places great importance on its education relationship with China, and I’m delighted to see our institutions continue to strengthen their connections.”
This is the second joint institute between Chinese and New Zealand providers. The first was between the University of Waikato and Zhejiang University City College in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province in eastern China, at undergraduate level in finance, computer graphic design and design media. The institute was launched in 2017, building on 15 years of collaboration through a joint programme in finance.
The Chinese Ministry of Education’s website lists 20 active joint programmes between Chinese and New Zealand providers at bachelor’s level and above. These include Massey University and Hebei University of Technology’s programme in the ‘Internet of Things’; Dalian Ocean University and Otago Polytechnic’s programme in Mechanic Engineering and Automation; Jilin Animation Institute and New Zealand Media Design School’s programme in Animation and Yunnan Agricultural University and Lincoln University’s programme in Agricultural and Forestry Economic Management.

Preferred name and inaugural CE for the IST released by Establishment Board
These conversations provide providers and their stakeholders updates on the progress being made by the Unit and an opportunity to ask questions. These latest conversations will have a focus on the name and brand including the Board’s preferred name for the new national Institute. To support the conversation, a video has been shared that captures the essence of the journey to date. It outlines a vision for the Institute, along with presenting the preferred name.
Once the Regional Kōrero have been completed, the public online consultation will open, allowing everyone to provide feedback on the preferred name being suggested.
The online consultation is open from 14 February until 8 March. Once complete, the IST Establishment Board will consider public feedback on their preferred name and finalise their recommendation to the Minister.

Stephen Town has also been named as the inaugural Chief Executive of the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology. Stephen is currently in his final year leading Auckland Council and will formally take up his role on 6 July 2020.

1. Uiui: LatAm Business
When: 8:30am NZT, 30 June
What: A conversational presentation by a panel including NZTE Regional Director Steve Jones and NZTE’s trade commissioners based in Brazil, Chile and Colombia. The panel will provide an economic overview of the region, including the challenges and opportunities presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, and then take questions.
2. Uiui: International education’s new landscape
When: 8:30am NZT, 2 July
What: Speakers from the main local education agent organizations, the Brazilian Educational & Language Travel Association (BELTA) and the Colombian National Association of Education Advisors (ANEX), as well as ICEF Latin America will talk on the LatAm education landscape in light of COVID-19, as well as the current trends, strategy for recovery, and feedback from students.

Education New Zealand launches Brand Protect 2.0 Campaign
On 23 November, ENZ will be launching a digital brand campaign informally known as ‘Brand Protect 2’.
This is a direct continuation of the Brand Protect campaign that ran July to August, and became our most successful brand awareness campaign to date. Research shows us that global sentiment towards New Zealand remains positive, so this is a key moment to leverage this attention to tell the education story in-market.
The new iteration will run in Indonesia, the UK, and Viet Nam from 23 November-23 December, with China following in January. Our campaign activity will be supported by a range of content on our own social media channels.
In addition to the content, a new landing page has been developed to further underline New Zealand education values and draw a connection between our global reputation and the strength of our education system. As well as this, audiences will be directed to explore their future study options on SINZ and join our social communities.

Education New Zealand’s Brand Protect our most successful brand campaigns to date
Both campaigns exceeded previous ENZ results and were well above industry standards. These results, alongside the brand tracking research, have affirmed that global appetite for a New Zealand education remains high.
“We have learnt that our message resonates globally with people who are now seeing New Zealand in a whole new light,” ENZ Director Brand, Clayton Foster, says.
The second brand protect campaign – also known as Brand Protect 2.0 – ran from November to December 2020. It targeted the UK, Vietnam and Indonesia, and utilised the same video as the first campaign.
Brand Protect 2.0 reached 47 million people and achieved a high view through rate of 33.79 percent – or one in three viewers watched the video to a meaningful extent. The overall engagement rate was also high at 29.42 percent.
The first global brand campaign ran from July to August 2020. For a modest investment of $190,000 in Germany, Indonesia and Brazil, this campaign reached more than 30 million people across the three key markets and achieved an engagement rate of 22.35 percent. One in four people who came across this campaign watched the video to a meaningful extent.
The Brand Protect campaigns are a key part of the Recovery Plan’s third workstream, ‘Transforming to a more sustainable future state’. They leverage the positive global sentiment towards New Zealand to keep the dream of a New Zealand education alive in-market.

Girls in Tech plugs women into a career with computers
This year’s lucky recipients – the top 18 out of 436 total applicants – will have the opportunity to participate in fully funded courses with Hacktiv8, an Indonesian coding bootcamp and training provider.
“We are so glad to be able to offer further learning opportunities to women in Indonesia who are either already in tech or thinking about entering this fast-growing industry,” ENZ Programme Manager, Naluri Bella Wati, said.
It’s the sister initiative to ENZ and Girls in Tech Indonesia’s Arisan Digital 2020, a series of workshops delivered to members of Girls in Tech Indonesia and members of the public throughout last year.
The workshops featured top New Zealand academics and covered a range of topics, including cyber security, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, big data, and more. A total of 1,141 women across 20 cities in Indonesia participated in the hybrid and then virtual sessions.
“This industry-specific partnership with Girls in Tech allowed us to accomplish two key things: position New Zealand as a world leader in the area of tech education, and second, to showcase New Zealand’s unique teaching style in an innovative, offshore format,” Desiree said.
Both Arisan 2020 and the Girls in Tech Scholarship are part of the government’s Recovery Plan for International Education, under the internationalisation section of the ‘strengthening the system’ stream.

What is ‘transforming to a more sustainable future state’?
ENZ has been tasked with a programme of work that focuses on the diversification of education products and services. It forms part of the Government’s International Education Recovery Plan, under the “Transforming to a More Sustainable Future State” workstream.
Its overarching objective is to build sector resilience and diversify our offerings to broaden and enhance the value that international education brings to New Zealand over the longer term. This programme of work complements the Recovery Plan’s other focus areas, including early return of students and strengthening the system.
Although the pandemic has accelerated it, the need for diversification through a greater range of innovative products and services was first recognised in the 2018 New Zealand International Education Strategy (NZIES) under Goal 2, ‘Achieving Sustainable Growth’.
We now find ourselves in an environment that has already changed – we must respond to it, both in the short-term while borders are closed, and longer-term to build resilience against further big shocks.
We have a big opportunity now to identify areas where New Zealand can develop new high-value, high quality offerings that are grounded in the unique strengths of New Zealand and our education providers, and to wrap our education system and offerings around those areas.
Areas of focus
It’s important to note that this programme of work is not just about exploring other modes of delivery or a big digital project headed by the Government. Under the Recovery Plan there are three areas of focus in the Diversifying Products & Services programme:
- Exploration, testing and development of new products and services, as per Goal 2 of the NZIES and the 2020 sector Future Focus Programme funding
- Exploration of online platforms or partnerships, both to deliver online products but also to connect with audiences with a specific interest in online learning and/or online pathways to study in New Zealand
- Offshore pathways that will enable learners to begin their New Zealand journey from their home country and then transfer directly into qualifications offered in New Zealand.
We've already made a good start around our exploration of offshore pathway models with the Global New Zealand Education Pathways partnership with NCUK and New Zealand’s eight universities, launched December 2020.
Our overall goal is to support our established model of in-bound mobility with new and different ways of learning and in the long-term grow the overall value of our industry. Additionally, we want to ensure we maximise international education’s contribution to New Zealand’s wider international connectedness.
As Minister Mahuta said in a recent speech, “I believe that diplomacy is intergenerational in intent, where we put people, planet, peace and prosperity for all at the centre.”
Our international education offerings across in-bound and out-bound mobility, including blended, online and offshore delivery, can all be key enablers of this wider vision for our people and planet.
How are we going to do it?
The project team is currently exploring ideas around both innovative means of connecting with audiences (i.e. technology and channels), but also ideas for the evolution of education products, services and experiences that we might offer to international learners.
As a first step, ENZ ran an envisioning workshop in December with a range of innovation leaders from across different industries. From this, we’ve gained a draft vision of direction for future product and service offerings, and identified a set of emerging strategic themes.
The next step was taking these themes, ideas and concepts from December’s workshop and exploring further with govt agencies, and in a subsequent envisioning workshop with the same group of innovation leaders.
These workshops, and future sessions with members of the sector, learners and other stakeholders will co-design around agreed themes, from which ENZ will develop prototypes to test in association with the sector and potential audiences.
The project team and I are very much looking forward to updating and involving you as we progress in this co-design and prototype process over the next few months.
