  • International students in Dunedin get connected

    ‘Get Connected’ was a networking evening to launch the Job Ready Programme, which prepares international students for the transition from study to work through improving their skills and confidence in approaching prospective employers.

    Job Ready is a free, extracurricular programme designed for any tertiary international student studying in the Dunedin region. The aim of the programme is to give participants an in-depth understanding of working culture and expectations in New Zealand, and to help them develop skills that will aid them in New Zealand workplaces.

    “For many International students in New Zealand, networking is a scary and foreign business practice,” says Job Ready Coordinator, Madison Stumbles. “We wanted to create a new cultural norm – for students and businesses – where networking isn’t scary and international students have the confidence to engage with businesses looking to utilise the skills they have to offer.”

    The programme has been developed with the support of ENZ’s Regional Partnership Programme, Enterprise Dunedin, Otago Polytechnic, the University of Otago and the Otago Chamber of Commerce. 

    The event saw 15 international Job Ready ‘graduates’ engage with the potential employers in a positive and enriching atmosphere. The Minister of Immigration, Hon Michael Woodhouse, delivered the keynote speech and was joined by Education New Zealand’s Greg Scott and Enterprise Dunedin’s Export Education Coordinator, Sarah Gauthier and representatives of Dunedin’s international education providers.

    A strong turnout at the event demonstrated the level of commitment to international education in the city, and the strong understanding among all attendees of the way in which the Job Ready Programme can support local businesses in globalising their operations by creating links to skilled, international talent.

    About the programme

    In the lead up to the event, a pilot group of 15 international students from Otago Polytechnic and the University of Otago underwent the six-week intensive Job Ready programme.

    Confidence building was the main focus over the six weeks, with a strong emphasis placed on enabling the students to polish their professional networking skills. Several interactive seminars were facilitated by members of the Dunedin business and education community, with one popular session on ‘How to network’ led by Gallaway Cook Allan’s, Chief Executive Officer, Matthew Gorman.

    At the end of the six-week programme, students were proactively arranging meetings to talk to professionals with business interests in their field of study, and two had successfully secured employment for the following year.

    With more study ahead of them, the remainder of the students credited the Job Ready Programme with boosting their confidence in finding work in New Zealand after graduation.

    “I got what I needed out of this programme – confidence, knowledge [and] a better network of potential employers,” said one participant.

    “I would like to thank those who made this programme successful as it has given us a good insight into skills and abilities to work on, which are not usually taught in university,” stated another.

    Feedback from business participants was also incredibly positive. “I overheard Roger Belton from Southern Clams commenting on how these students were so capable, and on how they could help their businesses grow into new markets,” said Sarah Gauthier, Export Education Coordinator.  “He really enjoyed meeting the students and hearing how their international business skills and multiple language abilities would help his business grow into places like Thailand and Malaysia.”

    Local Dunedin businesses represented at the event included ADInstruments, Southern Clams, PocketSmith, Mixbit, Myth, Firebrand, ANZ and Cook Wong Accountants. There was also international business representation from the Carraway Group, a Hong Kong-based financial services firm.

    Next steps

    Planning for the next phase of the project is underway, with the next six-week programme being open to all international tertiary students in Dunedin and having an even stronger focus on engagement with local businesses.

    “I am really looking forward to see what phase two can do for Dunedin’s international students,” said Sarah Gauthier. “Secondary school engagement will be a priority and Job Ready intends to utilise the support received in the first phase to develop comprehensive material that will be applicable to all businesses and international students in New Zealand.”

  • Immigration reminder: Pathway Visa Pilot

    Invitations to take part in the pilot were issued to those institutions that have a student visa application approval rate of 90 percent or higher for the 2014/15 financial year.

    More detailed information about the pathway visa and the list of providers who have, as at 22 December 2015, signed up to take part, can be found on the Immigration New Zealand website here. The list will be updated on 1 February.

    Pathway student visas will allow international students to undertake a progression of up to three consecutive programmes of study with qualifying education providers on a single visa. For example, this may involve three consecutive years at secondary school or an English language course followed by foundation study and then a degree programme.

    The 18 month pilot period, which began on 7 December, will enable INZ to evaluate pilot outcomes, such as student transition rates from the first to the second programme of study and how well the arrangements between education providers are working.

    INDIA: Design in New Zealand

    Aniket Ujjainkar, an Indian international student was profiled last week in a leading Indian newspaper, The Hindu, which has a daily circulation of more than 1.3 million. Anikat recently secured his dream job as a Creature Assistant Technical Director at Weta Digital. He credits his success to the practical, hands on teaching approach he experienced at Media Design School where he studied towards a Bachelor of Art and Design degree. Film and animation studies are niche courses that New Zealand has particular expertise in. Animation is an emerging market in India with good job prospects and is gaining popularity with students. It is through profile pieces like this that we are raising awareness about New Zealand’s offering in this area. One of New Zealand’s strengths is our focus on work-ready graduates and this first-hand student account powerfully demonstrates how students can apply their skills from study to the workforce. ENZ first met with Aniket when Media Design School kindly hosted an Indian journalist as part of ENZ’s media familiarisation programme.

    NEW ZEALAND: Everest record breakers – Southland Sisters’ Double Joy

    This month ten recipients of the Indian New Zealand Sports Scholarships completed their year-long scholarships at New Zealand institutions. Tashi and Nungshi Malik studied a graduate diploma in sport and recreation at the Southern Institute of Technology in Invercargill and were featured in the 23 November issue of the New Zealand Woman’s Weekly magazine.  In April the twins became the youngest in the world to complete the “Explorers Grand Slam” – having reached the North and South pole as well as climbing the seven highest peaks of the world including Mount Everest. They also champion women’s rights, using their mountaineering as a metaphor to demonstrate that women can achieve to the same heights as their male counterparts. The article highlights New Zealand’s reputation as a peaceful destination with friendly people and a great outdoor lifestyle.

    After meeting the group of scholarship students. ENZ saw the human interest aspect in the twins’ story and contacted the magazine. Telling the story of international students and their contribution to New Zealand is a priority for ENZ.

  • Double celebration in the Philippines

    Education New Zealand (ENZ) continued to build momentum in the Philippines last week, with an agent seminar in the province of Cebu which hosted more than 40 guests including 13 New Zealand providers.

    “It’s been fantastic to witness the growth of student numbers from the Philippines and a big focus for us now is working alongside our key partners to ensure the momentum continues,” said Ben Burrowes, ENZ Regional Communications Manager, South East Asia.

    The Philippines saw an 83% growth in student numbers in 2015, making it New Zealand’s fastest growing international student market.

    New Zealand and the Philippines are also celebrating 50 years of bilateral relations this year.

    David Strachan, the New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines, hosted an anniversary event after the seminar. Guests included New Zealand providers, agents, alumni and a number of other key partners based in Cebu.

  • Putting us in their hearts and on their maps

    Some 21 agents from Brazil, Colombia, South Korea and Saudi Arabia were treated to tours of New Zealand’s special places. 

    ENZ's regional and international teams organised the programmes and toured with the agents over May and June.

    “The agents really enjoyed and appreciated the chance to learn about education in New Zealand, meet current international students and understand the distinctive regional offerings for students across all of New Zealand,” said Greg Scott, ENZ Regional Programme Manager.

    The tours included stops in Taranaki, Nelson, Canterbury, Waiuku, Hamilton, Dunedin, Queenstown, Napier, Wellington and Auckland.

    Each tour contained lots of interactive activities and emphasised education pathways and applied learning and creative technologies.

    The potential benefit to raising the profile of a New Zealand education amongst all these markets is immense.

    “The Korean agents indicated that their understanding has greatly increased of everything New Zealand has to offer,” said Tania Woodcock, International Market Manager, China, Korea and Japan.

    “So far, the feedback from the participating agents has been extremely positive and genuine,” said Sarah Gauthier, Regional Project Manager. 

    “We ensured the agents enjoyed themselves and their time in New Zealand – so that they could speak authentically to prospective international students and their families about the value of a New Zealand education.” 

    ENZ was seeing lots of photos of New Zealand on the agents’ social media feeds and their agencies’ websites.

    “This type of engagement with New Zealand post-famil is great,” said Sahinde Pala, Regional Project Manager. “It shows the impact we made on the agents, and their commitment to promoting New Zealand education.”

    “We’d like to thank all the people, organisations and regional groups who supported these famils,” said Sarah. 

    “It was a true Team New Zealand effort. We appreciated the time everyone took to host us, meet with the agents, organise tours and ensure that relevant international students were available to speak to the agents in their own language. 

    “There’s nothing like hearing why New Zealand is such a great place to be a student than from real international students.  By speaking about their study, lifestyle and work opportunities, the tours were really brought to life.”

  • New student support portal launched by India Government

    “With the big increase in our students making New Zealand their education destination choice, we felt the time was right to extend our outreach to them for the best international experience for them and their families,” said Mr Sanjiv Kohli, High Commissioner of India to New Zealand.

    The new portal has been welcomed by Education New Zealand and its NZ Inc partner agencies, Immigration New Zealand, Ministry of Education, New Zealand Qualifications Authority, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

    “We are committed to supporting these kinds of initiatives, and we encourage providers to share this information with their relevant student cohorts,” said John Goulter, Education New Zealand General Manager, Stakeholders, Communication and Intelligence.

    “We all want our young people to take advantage of the opportunities available to them, and an international education experience broadens horizons and possibilities.

    “Safety and well-being is a critical part of New Zealand’s international education journey and we are always looking for ways to support our international students.”

    Last month, the New Zealand Government strengthened the education code for pastoral care and established a dispute resolution scheme. New Zealand was a world leader when it first introduced the pastoral care code in 2002, and well-being initiatives for international students continue to be a significant part New Zealand’s education environment.

  • Medals for WelTec international student at top culinary competition

    Culinary students Tyler Langerveld and An, currently studying Level five diploma in cookery, went head-to-head with hospitality students from around the country to win silver at the Auckland event. Restaurant service student Reme Barkema, who also formed part of the team, picked up a bronze medal.

    An has been studying at WelTec since 2011, when she started English classes. She is thrilled to have won a medal. 

    “I found the opportunity to demonstrate what I have learnt at WelTec in a pressured competition environment really exciting,” said An.

    “After finishing Level five, I hope to work in a good restaurant in Wellington. Later I plan to travel to other countries to learn about their food and styles of cookery. I love food and travel.”

    At the Nestlé Toque d’Or event, Tyler and Thuay An Lai battled it out for over three hours against 10 other teams from around the country to create their three-course menu which was served to guests by Reme.

    The pressure was on throughout the live cook-off, as the team fought against the clock and scrutiny of top industry judges, including world-renowned chef, Gert Klotzke, of Sweden.

    This competition success comes a month after Weltec’s School of Hospitality won the City & Guild’s International Centre of Excellence – Asia Pacific award, which is one of only five awards distributed globally, and two months after WelTec culinary student, Jamie Bell, was a finalist in the New Zealand Viet Nam Culinary collaboration held in Ho Chi Minh City.

    City and Guilds Regional Manager for the Pacific, Glenn Fulcher said WelTec’s City and Guilds success was “an amazing achievement”.  WelTec delivers City and Guilds culinary arts, food & beverage service, hotel reception, international barista and international tourism courses, with many of its graduates gaining employment around the world.  

  • ENZ announces organisation changes

    The changes are a reflection of the significant growth within the industry and change in focus that ENZ has experienced since its establishment in 2011, and in particular to suggestions included in the Performance Improvement Framework (PIF) completed early this year.

    The main changes are outlined below.

    • A flatter senior leadership structure with the three Regional Directors now reporting directly to Chief Executive Grant McPherson, and disestablishment of the GM International role. The three Regional Directors are: Lisa Futschek, Regional Director, Americas & Europe, based in Wellington; Alex Grace, Regional Director China & North Asia, based in Beijing; and John Laxon, Regional Director India, SE Asia & Middle East, based in Dubai.
    • Creation of a new GM Strategy & Insight role to strengthen our market intelligence and analytics, and future thinking capability.
    • The current Marketing and Channels Team will be renamed Student Marketing, and will have primary responsibility for leading and managing our student-focused activities. This team will include a new Director of Student Experience role based in Auckland.

    These changes are an important step in ENZ’s future, and stakeholders can expect to see further adjustments as we evolve.

    Teacher demand international schools’ biggest challenge 

    Parents’ desire to equip their children with English language skills and prepare them for university overseas have contributed to a worldwide boom. The number of international students worldwide is forecasted to reach 6.3 million by 2021. Schools will therefore face the challenge of finding enough skilled teachers to deliver a high quality education to all of these students – some 150,000 qualified teachers are expected to be needed by 2021.

    Mobility = Employability 

    In 2015, 64% of employers said that graduates with international experience are more employable – up from 33% in 2006.  Globally, mobility is on the riseyet the UK fares poorly.  In 2013/14, just over 10,000 of all higher education students in UK were outwardly mobile, compared to 50,000 each from Germany and Spain. The dominant barriers to mobility include lack of confidence with language skills (36%) and perceived difficulties adapting to a different culture (19%).   • Event season in Viet Nam

    Two alumni networking events had more than 200 registrations, as well as the participation of Immigration New Zealand (INZ) and New Zealand Aid, who answered queries from students and parents about studying in New Zealand.

    Several seminars were held alongside the fairs to discuss student visas, the New Zealand curriculum and NCEA, and the NZ ASEAN Scholar Awards. The seminars drew significant interest with the rooms full for most of the day.

    Ben Burrowes, ENZ’s Regional Communications & Strategic Relations Manager for South East Asia, said it was fantastic to see so much interest in the seminars.

    “It was clear that the students and parents had already conducted their own research and had come prepared with specific questions on programmes of study and life as a student in New Zealand.”

    The Hanoi agent seminar, held on 17 March, included student visa updates from INZ, followed by education agent training and “speed meetings” between local agents and New Zealand education providers.

    The events were accompanied by a comprehensive public relations programme that resulted in good coverage in Vietnamese media. Some 15 local media members attended a media briefing in Ho Chi Minh City, seizing the opportunity to interview two Vietnamese alumni and Ben.

    The ENZ team also conducted an online chat with vnexpress.net, a top online news website in Viet Nam with over one million views per month. During the two-hour live chat session, questions were put to panel members Ben, Chris Klaassen (Chair of SIEBA), Giang Nguyen (University of Waikato’s SEA Regional Manager), and Lucy Nguyen (SIT’s International Marketing Officer for Vietnam). They answered nearly 60 questions ranging from New Zealand’s quality of education, the transferability of qualifications, the high school system and NCEA. After the live chat, the answers remained on the news site and were syndicated by many other online sources.

    Ben said the number of questions put to the panel was a positive sign.

    “A number of questions asked for comparisons between New Zealand and some of our stronger competitors – a further testament to the growing market awareness of New Zealand,” he said.

    Air New Zealand was among the events’ partners, providing two sets of return tickets to New Zealand at the fairs.
