Dragons documentary airs in China
Guangzhou TV screened the series on their Young channel from Monday to Thursday, and they’ve also made it available on their digital cable service so it’s downloadable and viewable in Guangzhou via the internet TV channel Tang Guo Shi Guang. Guangzhou TV informed us they also plan to play it on their English channels and Comprehensive Channel (their core channel).
Dragons in a Distant Land is documentary series about studying and living in New Zealand. The series tells the stories of six students currently studying in New Zealand and the experiences of their parents back in China. It also shares the stories of alumni working in both New Zealand and China. The documentary is available in both Mandarin and English and can be screened in two or four parts.
Other channels are confirming their screening times – we don’t expect to hear of them in advance but we’ll inform you if we do. Please keep an eye on our website and International Education News for further updates.

China's First Lady receives Honorary Doctorate
Madame Peng was awarded the Doctor of Literature (honoris causa) in recognition of her international contributions to the performing arts and health and education programmes.
In the citation in advance of bestowing the honorary doctorate, Sir Richard Taylor noted Madame Peng’s distinguished academic and public service career:
In the 1980s, she was the first person in China to graduate with a Master’s degree in traditional ethnic music from the prestigious China Conservatory of Music, where she is now both a professor and PhD supervisor. Today she holds a wide array of senior positions in her areas of artistic expertise, including Vice-President of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Vice-Chair of the Chinese Musicians Association, and Dean of the Art Academy of the People's Liberation Army, where she holds the rank of Major-General. Madame Peng is also an Adjunct Professor at Peking University, China’s most highly-regarded university and a close and longstanding partner of Massey University.
Within China, Madame Peng has worked for many years to promote rural development, girls' and women's education, and public health. She has been an ambassador for tobacco control since 2009, and serves as Voluntary Advocate for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis control and prevention for the Chinese National Health and Family Planning Commission, which is another Massey University partner in China. In 2011 the World Health Organisation likewise appointed her as a Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, a role that has involved her in a series of high-profile international events to promote concerted action on the two diseases.
In March this year, the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) named Madame Peng as a Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women’s Education in recognition of her commitment to empowering girls and women through access to quality education, her outstanding contribution to fighting inequalities in education, her devoted service to human development and creativity, and her dedication to UNESCO’s ideals and aims. Addressing Madame Peng, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said, “To succeed, we need role models, and you are an immense role model for millions of young girls in China and beyond”.
ENZ’s China Team had suggested a visit by Madame Peng to CoCA, due to its status as the first art and design school outside of North America to be granted “substantial equivalency” by the US National Association of Schools of Art & Design.
“This visit – the only separate programme for Madame Peng while she was in New Zealand – showcased a niche area where New Zealand institutions are at the forefront globally”, says ENZ's Regional Director Alexandra Grace.
“It was clear from the ceremony that Madame Peng was very pleased to receive this honour, and she was visibly impressed by the calibre of students’ work during her post-conferment tour.”
In her address, Madame Peng expressed her “heartfelt thanks”, describing Massey University as the “leading university in New Zealand” that had produced many outstanding graduates including government ministers, Olympic champions, an All Black coach and many business leaders.
“All are important contributors to the prosperity of the country and I believe, with this wonderful faculty and its students, Massey University will enjoy an even greater future," she said.

School body makes strong progress
The Establishment Board has been meeting regularly since October 2014 and has made considerable progress towards establishing SIEBA as an Incorporated Society. A governance structure and constitution have been agreed upon and the business case is almost complete. This will be closely followed by the release of further information for the sector, a membership drive, and calls for nominations and voting for a permanent Board.
The vision of SIEBA, in response to identified needs within the Strategic Roadmap, is to be a leading partner for New Zealand Schools in advancing their international education business. SIEBA’s mission is to Lead, Connect and Grow. It will do this by:

providing leadership for the school sector in sharing best practice and in advocating with government and other agencies (Lead)

encouraging and facilitating the development of collaboration and partnerships amongst members (Connect)
-
encouraging the professional development of members in developing business capability and quality in the sector (Grow).
Fifteen schools have signed up to be the Foundation Members of SIEBA. You will hear more about this, why SIEBA can be a game-changer for your school and how your school can become a “SIEBA school” in the coming weeks. Membership will be open to all schools that are signatories to the Code of Practice of Pastoral Care for International Students (COP), with a provisional membership category available to schools intending to become COP signatories.
Meanwhile, we urge you to think about how SIEBA could help you advance the international education business in your school and who you might nominate to the Board to deliver on this promise. NZ publishers optimistic about Korean market
Korea is the world’s tenth largest publishing market, valued at an estimated NZ$5.4 billion. Children’s books enjoy the largest market share at 16 percent – if multi-volume sets were included the children’s book would account for 30 percent of the total market.
“We’ve had 17 one-on-one, high-quality meetings over the two days of our visit thanks to Education New Zealand having done a lot of preliminary scoping in advance. The reception at the New Zealand Embassy in Seoul was a further opportunity to build networks, and was well attended,” said David Glover, Publishers Association of New Zealand’s project manager responsible for the trade mission to Korea.
“The Korean education publishing market is both sophisticated and highly competitive. Publishers have good knowledge of what other major countries such as the US and UK have to offer. So it was very encouraging that so many local publishers took the time to meet visiting New Zealand publishers.”
Joy Allcock of MJA Publishing found that travelling in a group with support of ENZ was helpful in opening the right doors.
"In Seoul, David Glover and Onnuri Lee [ENZ Market Development Manager]did an incredible job – the visit was well-organised and researched. The people I met were preselected and were already interested in the product. They were ready to provide helpful feedback," said Joy.
In Hong Kong, Joy was invited to present to 200 early childhood teachers by the Bureau of Education, an opportunity that would not have been offered if she had been visiting as a single company.
David noted that selling our learning material to Asia is challenging.
“It is clear that NZ publishers will have to adapt their materials quite extensively to local market conditions if they wish to succeed here. But initial feedback from the visiting publishers is very positive and there are a number of good leads to follow up and hopefully turn into long term contracts,” said Glover.
The four educational publishers, ESA Publications, Lanky Hippo Publishing, MJA Publishing, and Wendy Pye Publishing visited Korea and were joined in Hong Kong by academic publisher NZCER before all travelling to the Taipei International Book Exhibition 11 – 16 February 2015.

ENZ announces Tripartite Fund awardees
The fund awards each university $30,000 to progress research with university partners in China in areas such as cancer research, national parks and conservation, and media and information.
The New Zealand-China Tripartite Fund is an ENZ-sponsored initiative that has been seeding research collaborations between New Zealand and Chinese universities over the last 15 years.
ENZ’s Regional Director – Asia, John Laxon, said ENZ was committed to showcasing and supporting the reputation of New Zealand universities in China, particularly their high-calibre researchers and postgraduate programmes.
“We look forward to further partnering with New Zealand universities, and to welcoming more Chinese students to study in New Zealand – ranked as the best English-speaking education system in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Educating for the Future Index 2018”.
2019-20 fund awardee Dr Mingsheng Li, Massey University, said he was excited about using tripartite funding to advance his work on developing media and information literacy (MIL) for students and teachers in China in collaboration with his university colleague, Professor Stephen Croucher and research partners at Shenzhen University and Yunnan Normal University.
The Tripartite Fund has helped cover travel and logistics costs for Associate Professor Mick Abbott of Lincoln University to collaborate with Tsinghua University and Kunming University of Science and Technology in conducing comparative research of Chinese and New Zealand national parks, and conservation and heritage areas.
Dr Abbott said the fund’s ongoing support had been invaluable in its outcomes for numerous staff exchanges and shared research outputs.
“It also enabled Lincoln [University] to work with partners to present an exhibition in Beijing in 2017 on the development of the National Parks in Aotearoa New Zealand, which over 50,000 people attended.”
Associate Professor Jun Lu said AUT was grateful for the Tripartite Fund which enabled them to start a great relationship with two Chinese universities.
“We established collaborative research projects in various health and medicine areas and expanded our research to three Chinese universities.
“The latest round of funding will enable us to consolidate existing ties and expand our collaboration to more Chinese universities and academics in all universities involved.”
New Zealand’s former Ambassador to China, John McKinnon, opening the exhibition on the development of New Zealand's national parks at the Museum of Chinese Gardens and Landscape Architecture in 2017. The project was made possible by the New Zealand-China Tripartite Fund.

Diversification of International Education sees six innovative projects receive funding
Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) has today announced the recipients of the International Education Product Innovation Fund.
Just over $1.6 million in funding has been awarded to six organisations, with support ranging from $200,000 to $300,000 for individual projects over the next 12 months.
The projects that received funding span a wide range of activity. They include a global course for rugby coaches developed in partnership with The Crusaders, an online indigenous eCommerce programme, English language learning based on original, high quality drama content, global enterprise coaching and peer group learning, an evolution of an NZ financial literacy platform for global audiences, and virtual reality online medical training focused on childbirth simulation.
Initial response to the Product Innovation Fund saw more than 150 organisations express interest. ENZ designed a rigorous process for submitting and assessing applications, working alongside Creative HQ – a specialist innovation agency. The process involved a clear set of criteria that were communicated to all applicants. A shortlist was prepared, and a final assessment was completed by an independent expert panel comprising external innovation and education experts and senior ENZ staff.
Commenting on the recipients, ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson said the innovation and scope of the applications had been eye-opening.
“The quality of the entrants was a clear indication of New Zealand ingenuity, market knowledge and cutting-edge innovation,” said Mr McPherson.
“The sheer variety of fields and technology being utilised shows how advanced the thinking and capability of New Zealand education providers has become. The potential of each of these projects can now be fully explored, and I am confident the lessons learned can be shared for the benefit of our whole education sector, inspiring others to follow their lead.”
The Product Innovation Fund was launched by ENZ in April to encourage providers to design and develop new education products and services for international learners. It is part of the broader refreshed international education strategy and is intended to fund programmes that deliver new, meaningful, and unique learning experiences from New Zealand with education products and services that set New Zealand apart from other countries.
Providers will create new products and services aimed at transforming the way international learning is developed, promoted, and delivered. Funding and support from ENZ will help providers fast-track the exploration and development of new ideas, conduct market research, build prototypes, and advance their global market strategy. Lessons learnt from the programme will assist in developing future education products and services for the benefit of the entire international education sector.

Study with New Zealand online launched for adult professional learners
The Study with New Zealand Online platform – an outcome of the Strategic Recovery Plan for International Education 2020 – is a New Zealand owned and branded platform that offers global learners a new way to engage with a New Zealand education.
Study with New Zealand Online has up to 60 courses available from 20 + education providers.
ENZ’s General Manager – Sector Engagement, Wendy Kerr, said the pilot learning platform aims to tap into the adult professional learner market.
“Our research shows that there is a significant career-oriented, adult learner market that is looking for ways to advance within their current career. Study with New Zealand Online aims to tap into that market and test if there is value in what New Zealand can offer uniquely.
“Good examples of courses unique to New Zealand are a short course on sustainability in the wine industry delivered by NMIT | Te Pūkenga. If you are in the wine industry, you clearly know New Zealand wines and our expertise in sustainability. The same goes for an ECE course offered by Te Rito Maioho ECNZ, which showcases New Zealand’s bicultural approach in this field.”
Kerr says, “We know how hard the pandemic was on international education. We know this project is about exploring new and different ways to deliver, and new and different audiences for, the New Zealand education experience. The goal is to diversify and build resilience.”
Findings from the Study with New Zealand Online pilot will help inform insights and recommendations on how New Zealand’s education sector could transform to a more sustainable future state through the diversification of our international education offerings.

“Feedback is a gift” - Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao’s 2023 Sector Survey
We would like to thank the many respondents who took the time to answer the survey, including universities, schools, Private Training Establishments, English Language Schools, education product and services companies, Te Pūkenga, peak bodies, and regional economic development agencies.
Undertaken annually, the survey helps ENZ to understand what is important to the sector, what services and support provide the most value, and where there are opportunities for ENZ to improve our offerings.
In 2023, 73% of the sector agreed that ENZ’s services and support over the past year had added value to their organisation, Business and market advice and E-News were ranked as the most useful services.
Areas such as ENZ’s in-market advice and informed intelligence were highlighted as being helpful to the sector in making timely, informed decisions, as is the support to re-establish and consolidate presence in existing markets while exploring new growth opportunities. The opportunities that ENZ provides for international partnerships was also highlighted as helpful.
The survey is also important in identifying the areas in which the sector would like ENZ to focus more. This included more advance notice on upcoming events and opportunities, providing more clarity on the range of services and support available and building more strategic partnerships across the wider sector.
Sharon-May McCrostie, ENZ’s Director of Sector Engagement said that while this survey is held annually, ENZ welcomes ongoing feedback on how ENZ can best support the New Zealand international education sector to grow.
“These surveys are considered an important scorecard for us to understand where we are meeting expectations with our stakeholders but also opportunities to improve our support to the sector.
“Looking ahead to 2024, the sector has said it would like to see us improve our engagement around integrating views of the sector in our planning and promoting the value that the international education sector brings to NZ,” added Sharon-May.
