  • New Code of pastoral care for domestic tertiary students in 2020

    The Code means there will be a consistent approach to the welfare, safety and wellbeing and pastoral care of domestic tertiary students.

    This follows the Government passing new legislation (the Education (Pastoral Care) Amendment Act) and releasing details of an interim Code of Practice setting out the Government’s expectations of tertiary providers.

    The interim domestic tertiary code will be in place from 1 January 2020. It sets out a general duty of pastoral care that tertiary education providers have for domestic tertiary students, and specific requirements for providers that offer student accommodation. All tertiary education providers are expected to comply with the Code.

    International students already have a high level of pastoral care and support in place as set out in the Code of Practice for pastoral care of international students which includes safety, wellbeing and accommodation.

    International students are also supported by the International Students Wellbeing Strategy, which ensures government agencies work together to support international students to feel safe, well and welcome in New Zealand.

    In relation to student accommodation, tertiary education providers will be required to support the safety and wellbeing of students and improve the consistency of standards in student accommodation.

    From next year, the interim code introduces offences and penalties for serious breaches that will apply to providers and signatories to the Code for international students, including schools.

    There are no changes for international students as they continue to be well covered under the Code of Practice for pastoral care of international students.

    The Government will work with the sector in 2020 to develop a permanent on-going Code of Practice for 2021 and beyond. This will provide an opportunity to consider any improvements to pastoral care for international students to be introduced for 2021.

  • Summer plans: what students need to know

    Under current border settings, tertiary-level international students will need to make careful and informed decisions about their plans for the summer period.

    Any international student who chooses to return home (or otherwise leave New Zealand) over the summer break needs to be aware that they are not eligible to re-enter the country to continue study in early 2021 under current border settings. Students facing hardship will need to reconsider whether they should continue to stay in New Zealand or are better to return home.

    International students currently in New Zealand who intend to continue to study in 2021 have the following options at the end of this academic year: 

    • Remain here over the break and continue their New Zealand study next year
    • Find additional summer school study programmes
    • Return home and continue their New Zealand study online next year, if their institution supports this option
    • Return home and cease their New Zealand study.

    Study providers are asked to ensure they are familiar with their ongoing Code obligations over the summer period, and to assist students to understand their options.

    Education New Zealand wants to complement and spread the word about the excellent work the sector and regional economic development agencies are all currently undertaking.

    We are also mindful that remaining in New Zealand will bring challenges for students and so supporting student connection and wellbeing is also a focus over this time.

    At ENZ we are:

    • Creating new NauMai NZ pages, specifically aimed towards keeping students in New Zealand over the summer.
      • The aim of these pages is to provide a central repository of activities and opportunities, addressing key themes of study, recreation, skill development, and connection with other students.
      • They will signpost out to activity happening at a regional and national level, as well as highlighting ENZ-led online initiatives.
      • These pages will be live at the end of September
    • Hosting a Summer in NZ online virtual fair for international students in NZ on 31 October, where regions and contributing organisations will have a chance to showcase summer activities that they are developing and delivering. Students will be able to register via NauMai NZ at the beginning of October.
    • Activating a variety of communications channels to direct students to NauMai NZ and the Summer in NZ fair to maximise awareness of summer opportunities and to gently encourage consideration of further study to those whose programmes may be finishing.
    • Facilitating online events and opportunities to support student wellbeing and connection over the summer period.

  • Two new sector-facing leadership roles at ENZ

    GM Sector Engagement

    We look forward to welcoming Wendy Kerr to Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) on 3 October 2022. Ms Kerr will take up the newly-created role of General Manager, Sector Engagement. 

    Joining us from fintech Valocity where she was Global Chief Operations Officer, Ms Kerr has rich experience in both education and commercial businesses globally. 

    Prior to Valocity, she was Director of the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Auckland.  She led the team there to transform the Centre and enabled the University to be recognised as Entrepreneurial University of the Year in the Asia-Pacific. 

    Ms Kerr is also Board Director for The Icehouse and sits on the Board of Epsom Girls Grammar. Previous roles include General Manager for Pearson PLC London, and Asia-Pacific Marketing Manager for Apple. She has been a TEDx speaker and has published a number one bestseller on Amazon - ‘Corporate Crossovers’. Ms Kerr has a Ngāti Mutunga and Moriori heritage and will be based in our Auckland office.  

    The Sector Engagement group delivers strategic initiatives in partnership with sector partners and stakeholders, undertakes business development, and designs and delivers new products and services.

    GM Sector Services

    Sahinde Pala was recently appointed to the newly-created role of General Manager, Sector Services.

    Ms Pala joined ENZ in 2016 after 18 years working for a multinational group of English language schools. With a career dedicated to international education, she brought extensive private sector experience in international marketing, stakeholder engagement and student experience delivery to the organisation.

    Ms Pala has held a number of roles at ENZ working with education providers, government stakeholders, regional groups, peak bodies, students’ associations and community groups. She was heavily involved in developing the International Student Wellbeing Strategy.

    With a passion for delivering an excellent customer experience, Ms Pala will be leading the newly formed Sector Services team to deliver a suite of products and services that support the sector to rebuild and thrive. This includes student experience, global citizenship, global events, and agent engagement, as well as scholarships to support domestic students to have an international education experience, and international students to study in New Zealand. 

    Sahinde is based in our Auckland office and spends her time outside of work standing on the sidelines of sports fields supporting her young boys.

  • High-level delegation visit strengthens education relationship with India

    The New Zealand India Education Week – held from 17-22 April – included senior level participation from New Zealand universities and was designed to further strengthen the strategic education partnership with India. 

    Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, led the delegation across New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai. 

    Demonstrating New Zealand’s overall commitment to India, New Zealand announced an investment of $400,000 towards internationalisation and student mobility initiatives, including the relaunch of the New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA). 

    The NZEA are unique scholarships designed exclusively for Indian students that are jointly funded by ENZ and all New Zealand universities. Since their launch in 2016, the scholarships have enabled more than 200 Indian students to study at one of New Zealand’s universities. 

    Another key focus for the week was to re-engage with the New Zealand Centre at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and discuss the future trajectory of the partnership.

    Erik Lithander, Deputy Vice Chancellor Strategic Engagement at the University of Auckland, signed an MoU with IIT Delhi on behalf of all New Zealand universities to continue the relationship and further develop the New Zealand Study Centre 

    The New Zealand Study Centre was inaugurated at IIT Delhi in February 2020 by Deputy PM Winston Peters, demonstrating the importance of education as a key part of the India-New Zealand relationship.  

    The week was bookended by two education agent fairs in New Delhi and Mumbai respectively, both of which exceeded expected student attendance numbers.  

    Speaking at a media briefing held at the New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi during the New Zealand India Education Week, ENZ CE Grant McPherson underlined the importance of New Zealand’s education partnership with India.  

    “India is one of New Zealand’s priority partner countries for collaborations, exchanges, and student mobility. We are excited that the announcements around the New Zealand Centre strengthening and the extensive package of scholarships under the New Zealand Excellence Awards scheme will further engagement with India,” Grant said. 

    ENZ Regional Director – Asia, Ben Burrowes, said with the sector’s focus on recovery and reconnections, the New Zealand India Education Week provided a great opportunity to refresh relationships with education sector stakeholders in India.  

    “India has always been a strong partner to New Zealand in the education space, and students from India consistently make up the second largest portion of international students studying in New Zealand.  

    “We are delighted for the opportunity that the New Zealand India Education Week offered us to reconnect and refresh our education links with India, and we look forward to building this relationship further over the coming years.”

    To begin the week, sector representatives were provided with in-depth insights into the India-New Zealand relationship from High Commissioner David Pine, ENZ in-market staff and a consultant from EY. Representatives attended meetings with government departments such as the University Grants Commission (UGC) as well as B2B institutional networking events to support their university's global engagement. The delegation also met with two Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), IIT Delhi and IIT Madras.   

  • Sharing the international student experience

    In August, ENZ and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade brought together 30 international tertiary students representing all ten ASEAN countries, and ten New Zealand students who had participated in the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia Understanding South East Asia programme. The purpose? To celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and ASEAN by strengthening connections among students, and to provide the students with a platform for sharing their views on the international student experience in New Zealand.

    Over 100 nominations were received from a range of New Zealand’s universities, institutes of technology and polytechnics, and private training establishments for students from ASEAN countries to participate. Each nominating institution had at least one representative at the two-day programme in Wellington. Participating students were enrolled in a range of programmes from Level 4 certificates through to doctoral level.

    Many of the nominating institutions created online media content around Student Voice and the students themselves set up a Facebook page especially for the event which attracted media attention both in New Zealand and overseas.

    The students heard from industry experts on the importance of alumni networks, the value of a New Zealand education, and the importance of ASEAN-New Zealand links in business.

    Lester Khoo from AUT University engaged the students on how a New Zealand education can launch careers in ASEAN, with one student responding:

    “The launch pad was really useful and changed my perspective of being an ASEAN student. I used to think very selfishly about my own career not about the development of my country and other ASEAN countries. The launch pad makes me realize there might be something that I can do to improve my country and the relationship between New Zealand and ASEAN countries.”

    In the key download session of Student Voice 2015, the students employed “Design Thinking” methodology to share their international student experiences and to think creatively together to reframe any challenges as opportunities.

    There was lots of discussion around the quirkiness of New Zealand life which the students rated as very appealing. This included getting to understand and use Kiwi slang, and the relaxed and welcoming way everyone treats each other. Life in New Zealand is “sweet as”.

    Integration in New Zealand was a topic that was very important to the students. They collaborated to develop a range of solutions to improve the integration process for international students in New Zealand. These included initiatives for New Zealand institutions but also advice for international students themselves. Some of the ideas for initiatives focused on campus events, and social media activity, to encourage an appreciation of cultures, and for international students to actively look for opportunities to engage with their New Zealand peers.

    ENZ will be sharing further detail directly with the New Zealand institutions who engaged in Student Voice.

    One student commented on the integration process by saying, “independence especially in a foreign country is a challenge, making it more difficult when homesickness strikes and adaptation is hard. But I think it’s all part of the process, because in a brighter perspective, New Zealand offers a wide opportunity to search for new paths in expressing yourself and adopting to different cultures and people.”

    The students also listed some of their “top fives” on a range of topics.

  • Funding round open for student wellbeing projects

    The international student wellbeing strategy funding round 2018/19 is now open, with $750,000 of funding targeted at projects to improve the support and experience of international students in New Zealand. 

    The Ministry of Education is seeking Expressions of Interest on one-year projects that contribute to the outcomes of the International Student Wellbeing Strategy with a priority this year on safety and mental health support of international students

    Each project can apply for up to a maximum of $150,000 funding. 

    Hayley Shields, ENZ’s Director Student Experience, encourages providers to apply for the second funding round.

    “Wellbeing initiatives not only benefit international students, but also protect and enhance New Zealand’s reputation as a safe and welcoming study destination.

    “While all students need wellbeing support services, international students – in a foreign country and culture, away from their support networks at home – can encounter additional challenges. 

    Applications close 24 August, with successful projects announced in November.

  • Agent Activity Fund in Colombia takes off

    The event was organised by Colombian agency Go Study, Work and Travel​ and supported by ENZ’s Colombia team, via their Agent Activity Fund.  In this inaugural round of the Fund, Colombian agencies were invited to “let their imaginations fly” in proposing ways to promote New Zealand and increase Colombian student numbers to New Zealand.

    Five agencies were awarded NZ$2,000 each, with Go Study, Work and Travel​'s information session being the first cab off the rank.

    As an incentive, all participants at the information session went into the draw to receive two 12-week, English-language scholarships donated by EDENZ and New Zealand Language Centres.

    The lucky scholarship winners were announced at the event.

    A guest speaker at the session was Colombian blogger Maggi Mora who studied English in New Zealand last summer via an English New Zealand International Education Growth Fund project, and raved about her experiences here.

    “This was a clear example of the benefits of different agencies working together,” says Lisa Futschek, ENZ Regional Director Americas and Europe.

    “An offshore agent, NZ institutions, a former student and ENZ all working together to promote New Zealand is a powerful thing.” 

    Javiera Visedo, ENZ Market Development Manager in Colombia, says upcoming projects funded by the Agent Activity Fund will focus on promotional activities using social media.

    “It was great to see so many agents interested in partnering with us and submitting projects for consideration.

    We would like to increase the fund next year because running it for the first time in 2016 has resulted in great exposure for New Zealand.”

  • Record referrals to institutions in January

    The size of the Study in New Zealand website audience has grown by 83 percent, from 1.8 million in 2013/14 to 3.3 million in 2014/15.

    An exciting development is that January 2016 saw the highest-ever number of referrals – 14,512 – from studyinnewzealand.govt.nz to the websites of New Zealand education institutions.

    This means 14,512 visitors to the Study in New Zealand website – parents, agents and prospective students – chose to take the step of sending an enquiry directly to a New Zealand institution to find out more about their study options.

    This increased traffic is the culmination of several initiatives ENZ’s Marketing and Channel Development team has undertaken to keep delivering meaningful content to the website’s audiences, and encourage them choose New Zealand as a study destination.

    A student roundtable session saw 20 international students from across the UK give feedback on their experience. More targeted orientation and help finding part-time work were among their top recommendations. The ability to work part-time was seen as very important, not only for financial reasons but because of the opportunity to access a wider network, build self-confidence, and to immerse themselves in city life.

    Researchers still not getting published

    The head of Gadjah Mada University's (UGM) Graduate School of Medicine says inadequate writing skills means Indonesian researchers struggle to produce scientific papers for international journals. A recent study shows over a defined period, Indonesia published only 39,719 scientific documents, compared to Singapore’s 215,553 publications and Malaysia’s 181,251 publications.

    With an estimated 400 million people in developing countries lacking access to higher education, the University of Arizona (UA) has developed a ‘micro-campus’, using technology to deliver education to students anywhere in the world. Students watch lectures outside of class, and use class time on a local campus to work practically with other students.

    The demand for international schools in Asia continues

    Recent data shows that the demand for international schools in South East Asia is exceeding supply. Furthermore, student enrolment is no longer dominated by expatriates, but by local families who want an English-medium education with globally recognised qualifications for their children. Across the region, the number of students attending international schools increased by 10 percent from September 2015 to September 2016.

    Europeans back funding vocational training over higher education

    A recent survey of nearly 9,000 citizens in eight European countries reveals that, when forced to prioritise one area of education, 17 per cent chose higher education, compared with 30 per cent who want more vocational education and training (VET). Support for higher education was highest in Spain (30 per cent) and Italy (23 per cent), and lowest in Sweden (6 per cent), Germany and Denmark (both 9 per cent).

  • ENZ and Go Overseas bring scholarship to Europe

    Ute Haug, ENZ Senior Market Development Manager, Europe, said ENZ decided to launch a pilot campaign with Go Overseas in Europe after seeing its success in the US.

    “Each year, the US campaign generates an increased interest in New Zealand from US study abroad students, along with amplified social media activity around New Zealand.

    “Now in the fourth year, this year’s campaign will see us bring the scholarship to Europe too, helping its students to see that New Zealand institutions offer sought-after qualifications that are well recognised in Europe,” said Ute.

    Both the US and Europe scholarship campaigns will run from 8 September to 13 October.

    Last year’s campaign saw 12 percent of applicants were graduate students. To capture the interest of this applicant pool, three New Zealand institutions – University of Auckland, University of Otago and Victoria University of Wellington – are each offering one postgraduate scholarship for qualified US students.

    While only one winner is selected for each scholarship, ENZ Field Director, North America Alanna Dick said participating New Zealand institutions are still able to follow up with applicants interested in their institution.

    “Since the start of the US campaign in 2014, participating New Zealand universities and ITPs have worked closely with ENZ and Go Overseas to follow up these student leads generated from the applications,” said Alanna

    “For example, in the US last year, the scholarship was shared through a digital campaign with more than 1,500 universities and 2,600 industry professionals, resulting in more than 3,000 student applications.

    New Zealand Study Abroad Go Overseas Scholarships

    For students in the US:

    • One Undergraduate Semester Scholarship, worth $15,000 plus roundtrip flight
    • Three Master’s Degree or PhD Scholarships, worth $10,000 each for either University of Auckland, University of Otago, or Victoria University of Wellington.

    For students in Europe:

    One €12,500 Study Abroad Semester Scholarship. Applicants can apply for semester 1, semester 2 or northern hemisphere summer 2018.

    Applications for all scholarships close 13 October.
